Taco Joint is one of those places that stuns me in its overrated popularity. I had heard people rave about it, so perhaps my expectations were high. I was expecting good tacos. I've been twice now, once for breakfast, once for dinner and both experiences were disappointing. Most recently when we were there for dinner- the tortillas my tacos were made with were completely unheated, clearly pulled out of a package, processed and tasteless. The "steak" was dry as can be, tough and sinewy. Just gross. We gave them a second chance thinking maybe we just had one bad experience and because they're down the street from our home. Two bad experiences, well, that's a pattern. We won't be back. Still shaking my head in perplexity, wondering why others seem so loyal to such mediocrity and blahness. Taco Joint is close to the studio where I work, so I stopped in one day to check it out and was glad I did. The place has funky decor with album covers covering the walls and ceilings, sparkly colored vinyl seats and a bar to the side servig a large variety of local brews and such. Menu is on a chalkboard above the counter where you order and pick up your food. There is a large variety of your fast tex-mex basics. Tacos with whatever type of tortilla you prefer (including whole wheat), burritos, salads, chips & queso, combo plates, etc. . . They have vegetarian options and breakfast all day as well. Most of their items are relatively mild for my tastes, but they have three hot sauce pumps from which you choose red, green tomatillo or jalapeño ranch. The green is my favorite, but I prefer green everywhere. . . My go-tos are the Spicy Pork Tacos. You can get them individually or as a combo. I generally get two, but only because I'm a glutton for tacos. One is sufficiently stuffed with their tender spicy roasted pork and topped with fresh pico de gallo and shredded jack cheese on soft corn tortillas (you can request flour or whole wheat if you prefer) and it's quite filling on its own. The icing on the Taco Joint cake for me is that KXT members get a free fountain drink with any food purchase when you show them your membership card. They also have patio seating which is nice when I've been inside all day and need some fresh air before going back to work. Oh-- and did I mention they always have great music playing? So, in short, unless its late and they are already closed, pass on Fuzzy's across the street and head into the Taco Joint! Yum! read more

Very impressed. I got the fist tacos today. Nice fresh tortilla and cod! No over cooked and poorly spiced tilapia here. Service was not bad considering they just opened up. Wow. What an underwhelming experience. Let's begin with the painfully obvious: This place is a square-inch-by-square-inch carbon copy of the Fuzzy's franchise (one of which is located almost directly across the street) right down to the plastic food baskets, Comic Sans font on the menus and the cute cartoon food items decorating the place. Even Torchy's has a unique and identifiable decor, but the only visible difference inside here is the inclusion of a dedicated bar area. Seriously? Otherwise, it's yet another taco joint (no caps) located in a strip mall off Mockingbird serving the same basic menu as any other taco joint (no caps). Had the "Big B" burrito and a fish taco, and was disappointed in how shockingly plain each of these items were. The fish taco was a grilled piece of fish on a flour tortilla with some lettuce, full stop. While the fish was fresh it was entirely undressed and unseasoned (ranch sauce on the side), not even salt and pepper. Really? The burrito was big but full of cheap ground beef, lettuce and tomato with barely a spoonful of cheese and refried beans. I was stunned at how achingly flavorless this food was, without even the most basic of seasonings and requiring drowning in salsa just to make it palatable. I could drop random items off the shelf in my refrigerator and pantry and they would combine into a more flavorful dish than this. C'mon man, I'm paying money here. I originally considered three stars but the reason for only two is that Taco Joint started with a proven business model and solid menu concept and didn't improve on the food -- something relatively easy to accomplish. It's a little concerning to me how many people think this place hung the moon. I, on the other hand, do not. If like you breakfast burritos that when you take them out of the foil they are completely saturated and soaked in grease/oil, then you will love this place. I'm looking back to two years of randomly deciding to go here and every time I leave I am reminded of why I tell myself I won't go back. But, I guess when you don't go somewhere over 6 months you start to forget and fall prey again. Anyway, they salsa is somewhat forgettable. There isn't much flavor in it at all. The fajita meat that they use in tacos/burritos to me seems low quality and tough. Don't even bother ordering tacos to-go. By the time you get home (I live 4 minutes from there) there was so much oil in them that my crunchy taco was completely falling apart and my soft taco was gooey. Gross! I can see if you are a college student and on a tight budget how getting a whole "meal" for $6 might be appealing. I would gladly pay $4 more to get something that blows me away with taste, isn't loaded down with grease, and uses finer ingredients. read more

I feel like I'm not understanding something about this place. The food is fine, but not mind blowing. I keep wanting to love it as much as everyone else, but I just can't get into it. The disaster dip (queso, guac, and salsa) minus the meat is pretty delicious, and the chips are warm and fresh and not too thick, but the tacos are just meh, and the migas are well, just not right. It's like the tortilla strips are wet when mixed in with the scrambled eggs, or the seasoning mix has somehow been selected for some completely different cuisine. I keep trying them again different forms (platter vs. taco), in hopes that I just had them on a bad day, but they always taste the same weird bland way. Maybe the non chicken/egg involving items are to die for, but if you're looking for a chicken taco, or some migas tacos, there are less busy places to stop by for the same price and with a significantly shorter wait time. read more

I love the other location and wanted to support their new venture, so we dropped in for a happy hour this week and sat at the bar. The place was packed by 6:30. The food was delicious as always (we took it to go this time). My husband loved the pork taco. I had a Migas breakfast taco and it was amazing. The margaritas are pretty good and the beer was reasonably priced. It's really exciting that they are serving alcohol at this location, and breakfast all day!! One thing we noticed was KIDS. So many that we started counting them. Being in this area of town lends itself more to a family atmosphere I suppose, but it just caught us a little off guard since we are used to the other location at lunch. I don't know if they anticipated that or not but I hope they have enough high chairs!! Anyway, if you have kids then you should feel very comfortable bringing them here. I like that they open at 6:30 for breakfast, mainly because that fits my schedule perfectly! It's awkward waiting around for a place to open up at 7. Anywho, I've been trying out different breakfast taco combinations, but that fajita egg and cheese is probably my favorite. I've tried that massive big tex burrito and failed miserably. My breakfast has become 2 tacos, and I typically can finish 1 and a half. So easy to stop by, the food never takes very long, and I can get my own salsa to go. I hate to give Taco Joint a negative review and I have been waiting to even write this review hoping things would change, but unfortunately that never happened. This place is totally lacking the integrity of their food they once had. I have been a loyal follower of Taco Joint since they had one restaurant on Peak St. Taco Joint got big and busy and totally lost quality control and presentation of their food. The Mockingbird location is so busy that they just throw their food together without a second thought to quality. In my past four trips (two for breakfast and two for lunch), nothing has been congruent or quality driven. First, the size of the breakfast tacos are completely different. I get one with bean egg and bacon and the beans are non existent (maybe a teaspoon of beans, literally a smear on the tortilla), hardly any bacon and entirely egg. For that breakfast taco, it's $3 for eggs. Then my bean taco is SIGNIFICANTLY smaller as in that's the first thing I notice. I opened my tortilla and thought how much did I pay for this? I paid almost $2 dollars for a tortilla and 2 tablespoons of beans. Next trip same thing bean taco hardly any beans and taco is significantly smaller than the other. This time I just ordered a bacon and egg taco, but with the same result a sprinkle of bacon and all egg. My two dinner experiences weren't any better-- my 2 fish tacos were all lettuce, I had to search for the sliver of fish. They use to give a generous portion of fish on their $3+ fish tacos. The next dinner trip- it was a lester (a smear of beans on the tortilla around the crunchy shell-- in the past it was a thin layer that covered the entire tortilla wrapped in a crunchy shell as the menu states) that taco now runs you $3+ as well. The bean taco a complete miss once again. Bottom line, I have given up on Taco Joint. They raised their prices just to give you less food for your money. They serve food that literally looks like it was thrown together. My takeout box has looked like a war zone more than once. And honestly, the food is not that great anymore. Kids run rampant through the restaurant and outside. I have been run into by a child and dropped my togo order and NO ONE came to help me-- not the parents of the kids or any Taco Joint employee. A Taco Joint worker looked at me when it happened, but was too busy(?) to help me. I picked up the food and had to ask for another order and the worker's response was far from pleasant. One time, while picking up a to go order an employee in the back cut himself with a knife. The worker outside the kitchen began cussing and was VERY mad that someone made a mistake and hurt himself. When a gentleman walked into the dining area from the kitchen I asked if his coworker was ok, and if I could help or he needed help or if I should call 911. I would suggest spending your money somewhere else!! There are far BETTER PLACES FOR TASTE, QUALITY, SERVICE, AND OVERALL treatment of customers and employees. read more

This place has the best breakfast Taco's. I had their normal taco's for dinner once and I instantly regretted it. I LOVE breakfast tacos. Something about having your breakfast foods Chipotle style all easy to eat and nom nom nom to your hearts desire. I had the Great Gordo, that thing is a behemoth. It was literally the size of a Chipotle burrito, I could barely palm that beast. The first bite was amazing, it was probably all tortilla and potatoes, but it was awesome. Whats in the Great Gordo you ask ? -EGGS -POTATERS -CHEESE -MEAT OF CHOICE (Bacon, Sausage, Chorizo) -PURE AWESOMENESS In the description they say it is a "roundhouse kick of taste".... This is completely wrong. I would describe it more as a Street Fighter II Ken/Ryu Tornado Kick of Awesomeness. The sauces and ranch that they have go very well with the Great Gordo.... I would say the sauces pair well with their breakfast tacos, but I swear I am only ordering the Great Gordo from now on.. so honestly I will never know. read more

It is hard to pinpoint the beginning of the chi-chi "taco craze" here in Dallas. About two years ago, after Good to Go at the Green Spot blew up on Facebook and the Food Network, taco places started to spring up in quick succession. Rusty Taco, Fuzzy Taco, Velvet Taco, Taco Joint, etc. The novelty is wearing off and it feels like a "me too" restaurant concept. Everyone is in on the fad. Taco Joint is good, serviceable, but will not blow your mind. Better than Rusty and Velvet. Not as good or original as Good to Go. The folks in the kitchen and dining room are earnest and friendly. The Jalapeno Ranch sauce WILL melt your face off. It might be worth going in just to try it. read more

I am a HUGE fan of the location on Peak St. I could eat there every day if I seriously would. I am beyond estatic that they now have a Lakewood location as I am exactly 27 days away from officially being a Lake Highlands resident and will definitely be a regular for breakfast tacos and dinner at the bar. The food is AMAZING, the space is HUGE and they serve beer! Serioulsy, what more could you ask for. However, I also don't usually get food from the same restaurant for 3 consecutive days, so.... I LOVE Taco Joint. Maybe it's the pregnancy, but I seriously love this place. Since my first visit I have also tried the spicy pork taco, the brisket taco, and the disaster dip, and all are just as delicious as the Evan (which I've ordered on all three visits) and the chorizo/egg breakfast taco that first introduced me to this fine establishment. The spicy pork taco has just the right amount of kick. The brisket taco is super juicy, but not in a greasy way. And the disaster dip is reminiscent of Bob Armstrong from Matt's (WHEN is that place reopening???). Taco Joint is also FAST. All three visits, my food was ready in less than 5 minutes. And the people are friendly! Three different employees told me to have a good day as I was leaving. Great experience overall. I hope my husband stops me from going back again tomorrow. Taco Joint never ceases to delight me. You walk in, order your food at a counter, then wait to hear your name/number while you peruse the salsa bar. Their menu is extensive in the best way possible. From breakfast to dinner, the options are plenty and delicious. I've had their breakfast burrito, breakfast quesidilla, tacos, burritos, enchiladas, even their salad. You name it, I've probably tried it. All are fantastic! I especially like the breakfast burrito - it's huge! Come hungry for that one. The only reason I gave Taco Joint 4 stars instead of 5 was that the salsas are good, but not out of the park, and the queso is a little runny for my liking. There may come a time when I am sick of hipstery taco places but the time is not nearly here and if I ever do it will not be because of Taco Joint. Though TJ is in a very unhip strip mall, the place on the inside has a cool vibe and serves up really good tacos super fast, the place looks great. It has glittery upholstery on booths and seat cushions on chairs and bar stools, a great rectangular bar, a seating counter facing the parking lot and a nice patio out front. The coolest thing about the look of the place is the mural in the back wall depicting Dallas landmarks like Big Tex, The AAC, The Pegasus and several more. This is not the type of hippsterish eatery that tries to get you to think you are in Austin. They are brave enough to admit that they are in Dallas. The food was great. I ordered a spicey pork taco combo. The tacos were rapped in two soft corn tortillas and came with a dispisable little bowl with beans and refritos in it. Total cost with the drink was under 7:50 I believe. It was served up to me so fast that I barely got my drink and found a place to sit (after a little contemplation) that it cameout. They offered a menu like Fuzzy's with enchiladas, burritos and other Tex-Nex items and not exclusively tacos. There are few criticisms here. I like the fact that the staff called me 'man' and 'holmes' instead of sir but I know that might turn some people off. As much as I would complain about the strip mall location I realize that shopping spaces like that really need places like this and that such locations do have ample parking. read more

The Lester Taco: How can you go wrong with a flour tortilla with refried beans, wrapped around a crispy taco? It was awesome. Spicy Pork Taco: Very flavorful and cooked well. Brisket Taco: Very flavorful and cooked well. Had three sauces: Jalapeno Ranch was tasty, yet I would never put ranch on a taco. I think they probably got this one from Chuy's and duplicated it because there are weirdos out there that put ranch on anything. Tomatillo sauce was ok. I wish it had been more spicy. Very mild. Salsa Rojo was flavorful, but I wished it had more spice and maybe some cilantro. Overall, place was great and I'll go back if I'm in the area. read more

I've been pleasantly impressed on each occasion I have been in Taco Joint. The food is consistently above average and the ambiance is very heavily rock influenced, bearing a faint resemblance to Freebirds. After several visits, I think the fajita beef is seasoned very well and I enjoy it on one of their chalupas (Joint speak for a tostada). Get the jalapeño ranch at the salsa stand. But I rarely get lunch - they close the Gaston location at 2 and I always forget. I was over in the area where this newbie resides, and needed to get some takeout so I didn't have to cook through my football game. Their cute little patio just reeled me in. I was ordering To Go, so I sat at the bar and had a beer while I waited for my food. The bartender was friendly, food came out fast, and wham bam thank you ma'am and I was on my way. We got 2 brisket tacos and 2 fajita beef tacos and traded so we both got one of each. I freakin' LOVE that jalapeno ranch, and the tomatillo salsa. Not huge on the salsa roja, but I'm super picky about red salsa as it is. BF raved about the beef tacos, mine was yum-o-riffic as well. I ate the brisket one later that night, and it was a bit dry and stringy but that might have been just cause it was leftovers at that point. Since TJ joined us in East Dallas we have been regulars. We just moved to Plano but still stop by to get to-go at least once a week. They are super cheap, everything is delicious. I have yet to order something I haven't liked. Brisket tacos melt in your mouth. Sometimes they are better than others (sometimes they can be dry). Crispy tacos have tons of picadillo meat, the disaster queso is yummy, chips are super thin and fresh, beef fajita tacos are tender and seasoned well and the taco salad is really good. There jalapeno ranch rivals Chuy's. I go buy and purchase 6 or 32 oz. to have throughout the week for salads, etc. Their specials are always yummy. We got fried chicken tacos one night - yummers. Love everyone that works at TJ. Still don't know how they remember your name all the time! Good job guys! read more

I met some friends here for a late Saturday lunch (around 2 pm) recently. No wait (duh?), and the food came out fast. I had a beef fajita taco and a beef brisket taco. What can I say, I like beef. The tacos were tasty, but not really anything that wowed me or that I would drive across town for again. After ordering and eating, I wondered if breakfast tacos are served all day? It's not clear from their in-store menu or their website. I'd be interested in trying their breakfast tacos at some point...I'm always looking for a good migas taco! read more

What is there not to love about this place? I eat 2 things here... The Lesley and their big D burrito. The Lesley is like the double decker at taco bell but so much better with real ingredients. I away set enough cilantro ranch and lately I've been really loving their 5 alarm spicy sauce. Their big D burrito is definitely big enough and exactly what you would want when youre looking for a stuffed burrito filled with refried beans and all the Texmex toppings you would normally think of.
