I have crossed over to the dark side... I mean taco side... I mean brisket side. I mean I was always on the brisket side, especially at Mia's. But now I have found brisket tacos BETTER than Mia's. *Ducks to miss tomatoes flying from the hands of fellow Mia's lovers.* It's true. I didn't think it was possible, but folks... it is. I met my crew here on Brisket Taco Tuesday. (They only serve these bad boys on Tues.) I was surprised at how clean and open the space was. I wasn't expecting a shack or anything, but damn it was shiny in there! There was a small line at 11:30am, but not too crazy. Five minutes later though it was PACKED! Tables filled up and the line went out the door. Everything on the menu looked very tempting. The vegetarian tacos sounded amazing: The Sophie ($2.59-special veggie mix of carrots, potatoes, zucchini, red and yellow bell peppers, mushrooms, and onions sauteed in vegetable oil and topped with jack cheese and wrapped in a whole wheat tortilla) & the The Evan ($2.59-A wheat tortilla filled with black beans, rice, guacamole, tomatoes, salad mix, and Monterrey jack cheese). BUT I HAD to do the brisket. I started out with a couple tastes of the Disaster which is a their "special blend of queso mixed with seasoned ground sirloin, guacamole, and pico de gallo." It was pretty damn good. My order came out super swiftly though so I didn't have much time to eat the queso mix... which was probably a good thing. I did have enough time to fill my fountain drink with Diet Dr. Pepper and get a few cups of the tomatillo, jalapeno ranch and salsa. (By the way, all three were sauces were great but the jalapeno ranch went perfectly with the brisket.) On to the tacos. Sweet Jesus (pronounced "Haysooce") these babies were tasty. The meat was tender and broke off into my mouth while the juice dripped down my chin. That's some good shiz right there! I only made it through one of them at the restaurant... and only made it 5 minutes at home before cramming the other in my mouth. It was just so juicy and sweet. Plus they double up on the corn tortilla so it makes it easier to eat. On top of the drool-inducing food, the employees were incredibly nice. I believe the two young owners were there and they remembered every customer's name. On the way out, one of the cuties asked me: "Hey Melody, was everything alright?" Oh no. I've decided it's time I help everybody out so you know what to expect before you go. :) These are not, and have never intended to be, interior mexico tacos. You looking for al pastor? Yeah, not here. Picadillo? Nope, this ain't it. I adore (adoooore) tacos from little shacks. As a matter of fact, I hope I'm eating lengua when they say "beef". I want extra cilantro and onions. I want the hot green salsa. Yes please. I grew up in Dallas. I know tacos. Unfortunately, if you come to Taco Joint looking for reeeeeeal mex-mex or even tex-mex, well, buddy, this simply ain't it. These are different... they're intended (gasp!) to be Americanized. They just want to make fresh tacos. These owner guys are from Austin. Hear that music playing? Yeah, it's KGSR (a local Austin radio station) streamed on the internet. Austin has a few local chains of taco spots similar to Taco Joint. I'm sure these guys moved to Dallas, saw a hole in our market and are happily filling it. They're all about serving really fresh food at good prices. So if you go and say you didn't like it because you like authentic style tacos from stands... well, it's as if I reviewed Pizza Hut and said I didn't like it because it's not my favorite Italian spot. Folks, Taco Joint should just become the Official UYE spot on Tuesdays... we saw Chris L and Joseph B there and know others also make regular appearances. Since I'm the first to propose the OUYE, I get to make up the rules. The only rule is you gotta bask in the glory of the brisket-y taco goodness. By bask, I mean bathe. And by glory, I mean the the sweet beef brisket juices. L'eau de Brisket is powerful stuff, as you will be irresistible to all people who fancy BBQ. And all bears, even the non-Yogi variety, so be careful. Seriously, there's something about the brisket, in a flour tortilla, topped with an avocado, drenched with jalapeno ranch that makes me want to bathe in the juices. You say yuck? Well I say yum! Why only 4 stars and not 5? While I'd bathe in Taco Joint's brisket juices, I'd chug the shot of fat served on the side of Mia's brisket tacos. TJ is clean, smart, easy to understand, and the service is friendly and accommodating. You walk in, place the order at the counter, and it's up in about five minutes. The menu offers the standard tex-mex fare: Chalupas, tacos, burritos, salads, quesadillas, etc. They also have some interesting breakfast offerings. Open tables can be hard to find, so it's good to have one person order while the other conducts a recon mission. You can usually judge a Mexican food restaurant by the guacamole. TJ has the second-best guac I've had. Oddly, Chipotle is my fave. The TJ guac lets the avocado come through and adds some jalapeno for a little kick. Bueno, TJ! The tortilla chips are the thin variety, and kept breaking off in my guac. Some people like the thin chips. I like the thicker variety. The crispy tacos were just average, and completely exploded upon the first bite. Be sure to get a fork when you order them. I owe this find to Nikki B who turned me on to this place. I never would have known about it otherwise, for some strange reason. Anyway, thank you! Let me start with first impressions. This place is too cool for Dallas. I felt as if I had been transported to Madison, Berkeley, or Seattle. In other words, I loved the funky ambience and laid back approach. To the food: I went twice, once on a Saturday to check it out when I thought lines would be shorter, and on a Tuesday to get the famed brisket tacos. The first time it was around noon and the line was out the door anyway. I had some kind of soft taco combo, forget the name because it was a couple of weeks ago. But my impression was very favorable and the jalapeno ranch is just outstanding. Although it was a thoroughly positive experience and I have nothing bad to say, my thirst for tacos was not completely sated. So I returned on Tuesday this week (10/13/09) for brisket tacos with a friend from work. He had never even heard of brisket tacos. We got there about 11:15-ish and the line was very short, just a few people, so we ordered quickly and nabbed a table without problem. We got two orders and an order of the disaster queso. Both were excellent and lived up to the hype. My friend liked the taco so much he saved the second to take home to his wife so she could experience it. Such a sweetheart. Finally had my first Migas taco while in Dallas for my bday this summer. I had our friend order me 2 Migas tacos with egg whites instead of the regular scrambled eggs. Inside this taco were the eggs, tortilla strips, chiles, onions, tomatoes, serranos and cheese all mixed together like a scramble. Obviously, you can't go wrong with any easily put together breakfast item. These tacos were seriously the bomb diggity. Everything cooked together tasted extremely fresh. Typical Tex-Mex joint that steps it up on size. Not so much on how big the taco is, but, more on the size of the burrito they're packing. A good package that delivers. I wasn't impressed with the breakfast tacos nor my burrito. However, I think they deliver with the ground beef hard shell tacos. For a tex-mex joint it is just ok. I thought this place was ok, nothing to write home about. However the queso is the best I've ever had. I also got the Migas Taco (was just ok) and the vegetarian Sophie, which I liked. The boy got the Migas plate, which was missing the crunchy tortilla chips (the signature ingredient in Migas) and the beans were blah...he didn't like it too much. I'll go back again to try more of the cheap taco fare. The sauce bar was not as awesome as expected. The guy behind the register was very friendly and thanked us for coming in. Okay okay I get what all the hype is about now! I drove 20 minutes out of my way during lunch today with Valerie S. to go get some Taco joint. We couldn't stay to dine but but got to enjoy a little bit of the vibe and took full advantage of the self serve salsa area. I got the lupa combo that came with rice, flavorful refreid beans and two chalupas. The chalupas were just overstuffed with all sorts of goodness and were extra crunchy. I also ordered their chips and guacamole and man it was fresh and delish. I definitely need to come on a Tuesday to check out the brisket tacos. First up, although I think this has been covered, this is definitely a Tex-Mex (as opposed to authentic Mexican) taco place. Nothing wrong with that, but be aware. That said, my lunch here a week or so ago was really good. I had "The Disaster" to start, their queso/meat/quac/pico concoction. It was quite tasty, but a bit spendy at $5. Chips were light and crisp. The main event brought chicken enchiladas with sour cream sauce and a brisket taco on the side; both were quite large and packed with meat, the former with good quality chicken with modest spice, the latter with tasty, nicely spiced (if a tad dry) and tender brisket wrapped in a nice flour tortilla. All quite nice. The jalapeno ranch dressing is fantastic, as are the other salsas. This place is quite a haul for me (being an Allenite and all), but I'll surely be back, and I want to try those breakfast tacos some time. read more

First of all, if you're looking for Mexican food, turn around, walk out the door, and go somewhere else. This place is not worth your time. If you're looking for run of the mill Tex-Mex, you're in the right place. Really liked the staff here though -- the cashier was super friendly and a Rangers fan, so what else could I ask for? Taco Joint has a super trendy atmosphere, a la Potbelly's or Freebirds, and it's obvious that they spent a lot of time working on their image/marketing. The only tacos they offer, from what I could tell, are ground beef, fajita, veggie and brisket, in addition to some breakfast items that I didn't pay much attention to at lunch. I don't think they had corn tortillas, and the flour tasted like mission tortillas that they didn't even bother to heat up (read: gross). I ordered 3 fajita tacos, but I could have done with just one. The tacos combined a huge salad of lettuce, cheese and tomatoes with a bed of flavorless, room temperature fajita meat. We also had the chips and queso, but the chips were greasy and rubbery, and the queso was rotel and cheddar, nothing to get excited about. Two stars because they tried so hard with their marketing, but like I said, if you're looking for authentic tacos, skip this place. I would have preferred Taco Bell to Taco Joint. read more

Wow!!!! I'm glad Siri directed me to this place!!!! Walked in and was immediately hit with the sweet smell of meat. Being that it was my first time here I really didn't know what to order. Luckily Evelyn was running the register and was more than happy to make a few suggestions. I ended up with the Cannonball with chorizo. I figured it would take a minute to get my order prepared, but I was wrong. As soon as I grabbed my soda they were calling my name. So I sat down, took one bite, and immediately regretted all those mornings I ate breakfast at Taco Bell or Taco Bueno. If you are in the Baylor Medical district please do not hesitate to eat here. You won't be disappointed. So I went back at lunch to see what all of the hype was about on their tacos. To say the least the hype measured up! I decided on the Taco Joe's Fried Fish Fritter tacos. Those two tacos were heavenly: the fish was perfectly battered and fried to a golden crispy hue. A perfect amount of lettuce was put into each one as well. A creamy habanero sauce was included on the side which I put on one and jalapeño ranch on the other. I 86'd the beans and went for double rice. I also ordered chips and guacamole. I live three blocks away from here and drive past the Taco Joint all the time. The area is pretty chill and removed from the city center, so imagine my surprise to find over sixty reviews for this place already on Yelp! The best thing is, the props are well deserved. I was intrigued by the promise of lard-free chips and beans (you can ask at restaurants but you never really know for sure, you know?) and by the fact that they explicitly list vegetarian options in their menu, instead of forcing me to make clever substitutions to find something I can eat. My friend (who wants me to refer to her as 'the Meatasaurus', she's been watching a lot of Jurassic Park with her kid) and I came in some time around 1 pm and there was only a short line; they move through order-taking pretty quickly. We got chips and guacamole, she chose chicken fajita tacos, and I ordered the veggie burrito without cheese. The guacamole is chunky and really, really good. I could have eaten it with a spoon, but alas, I was in public. My burrito was awesome -- another review complained about the size, but I thought it was perfect. Big enough to be totally filling, and not as big as you might get at Freebird's (did you realize their half-bird veggie burrito is over 500 calories?!) which I can never finish in one sitting. It also had a good mix of vegetables and beans, which is a delicate balance (you have to make sure it's moist enough, not too crunchy with excess lettuce, not soggy which tears the tortilla, etc), and rarely achieved. My friend gave her chicken fajita tacos "two Meatasaurus-armed thumbs up!" She also really liked that the beans and rice came in the same container so that they could be easily mixed if desired. Final thought -- I got in line a second time to put in an order to go, and before I got to the front, two different employees asked me if everything had been okay with the first order. Way observant, and way conscientious! Even if I didn't live within Saturday-morning-stumbling distance from this place, I would go here all the time. TJ has been my 'go to' for breakfast tacos for years. I don't know what it is, but there is something different and BETTER about the TJ breakfast tacos. Same basic ingredients as others, but somehow better. Highly recommend Taco Joint. I would have given The Taco Joint five stars but I have a couple issues. 1. downsized tacos - at some point the Taco Joint breakfast tacos got a bit smaller. 2. priorities - several times I had to wait much longer than I should have due to the crew prepping large ToGo orders. The disaster queso had a real fresh taste of to it. Not to rich or heavy. If you order Togo, get the guacamole and Pico on the side, so you can warm up the cheese later. The break taco are a perfect size. Not small but not a burrito size. The bacon is spot-on. Crisp , smoking and just right. There is parking space but not a huge parking lot. The place looks clean. Now that I'm back in the area, and have been enlightened by the knowledge of them---I'm on the search for the best breakfast tacos and burritos. Here's the deal---this place is super VEGAN friendly. Both the decried and the black beans aren't cooked in animal products. (Hallelujah!!) and there are several really delightful vegetarian (easily made vegan) taco and burrito options. For $2.75, I was able to grab one refried bean and potato taco. If you ask me...that's a bit steep for a breakfast taco that's so simple. No egg, no cheese. I saw that they had a salsa bar, and immediately was impressed. No standard runny house salsa here! The taco came out super quick. I asked what their spiciest salsa was and they had to grab it for me from behind their counter. I heard the guy say---"delta and 5-alarm" as the names of the salsas. I don't know which one was which but I got one green one and 2 red ones. The red one is the winner by far! So much flavor. Whatever went into it was roasted. I want to say it had to be chipotle peppers bc there was a trademark smokiness to the salsa. From the picture i posted, you can see that the potatoes were seasoned while being cooked. This simple taco was super flavorful and I appreciate that. The salsa put it over the top for me. The inside of Taco Joint is clean and brilliantly colorful with plenty of seating. The employees are incredibly friendly and service was fast. This would be my top recommendation for breakfast tacos/burritos in the area. read more

Hubby and I went for breakfast. Not busy at all. I ordered two tacos with chorizo, egg, and potato. Hubby ordered the fajita and egg tacos. Didn't wait too long for our food. Immediately I noticed that the flour tortillas were not fresh and smelled store-bought. You can tell all the filling are already pre-made because inside my taco was the scrambled egg topped with the chorizo which was finished with the potato. None of it was scrambled together like you would find in other taco places. I really wasn't impressed with their breakfast. Hubby's tacos were okay. might try it again for lunch.
