Okay hear me out.... HORCHATA! The horchata here is the best!!! Seriously, so much cinnamon and tasted legitimate. We loved that alone. Taco Mesa is one of those hole-in-the-wall places that are hidden gems. From the aesthetics and look of this place, you wouldn't expect much. The seating is all outdoors and not super comfortable. You have to deal with the wind and flies/ gnats trying to steal your food. All of that is annoying. But.... The food is really good. We ordered two Chile relleno plates, an order of tacos, chips and guacamole, an horchata and a regular drink. The chips have a unique taste, lots of flavor. These are not your typical chips. The guacamole is super fresh! We loved that. I even took the guacamole and ate that with my Chile relleno plate. The Chile relleno plate has a little heat. If you are like me and can't handle spicy, this might be a challenge for you too. Every bite, I downed some horchata LOL My boyfriend loved his Chile relleno plate and tacos. He started having stomach issues (not related to the food), and he couldn't finish his food. But he wanted to finish it. I ate most of my food, and really liked the rice and beans. Overall, good little spot if you don't mind the outdoor seating. I wouldn't recommend during the heat of summer though. No tacos are worth that torture. read more

This place is under the radar. The staff is always friendly. The fresh juice is delicious!! Every dish I've had is amazingly authentic and full of flavor. My fav is the pollo mole and fish tacos. But the nachos are the bomb too! Try it all, you won't be disappointed!! read more

What a hidden gem!!! I got the chilaquiles with grilled chicken--price was slightly above average but it made up for it with its generous portion and amazing flavor. Was in the area and stopped by with coworkers. It was delicious. I got the chicken torta, and I was able to finish half of it with rice and beans on the side. I really loved the beans. The chicken seemed too charred. But I was hungry, so I just ate it regardless. Chicken wasn't really juicy, more on the dry side. Their chips have an extra added seasoning that's so tasty. They were crispy and wonderful with the salsas. Their guac is really yummy. I saw them mashing it in big containers, so I know it's fresh. There's a patio outside. read more

Ambiance - small indoor seating area/ordering counter. Then there's outdoor heated patio seating. Decent size outdoor patio but on busy days like Taco Tuesdays, you may have to wait for seating depending on time Locations - been to their 3 locations in Orange, Costa Mesa and Mission Viejo and they don't disappoint. Orange and Mission Viejo has bigger seating capacity indoors with MV Having a little bit of the outdoors while Orange doesn't have any. Tip - taco Tuesdays and burrito Wednesdays are the two days I've been at this place for but i tend to order what I want and not necessarily what the specials are for those days. Suggestion to the owner - please have a Torta Thursdays?!! I would love this day since I love their tortas!! Stumbled upon this gem. The stuffed jalapeño is too breaded, but has a mixture of goodness. The tacos you have to purchase individually and add rice and beans for $3. The elote was tasty - it has some heat to it and i would get it again. The beans are interesting - maybe it's the color? They taste fine. The food is so fresh and has such great flavor. Guarantee it will surpass your expectation. The outside will deceive you, you have to walk in and eat here if you're in the area. I just took a friend from out of town and he was not believing me when I told him what to expert from the food. One bite and he looked at me and just said "No way!" I came for Taco Tuesday and got the shredded beef, shredded chicken, and pastor tacos (I asked for what was most popular since this was my first time and those are what he said) and a mango margarita. shredded beef and shredded chicken come w a hard shell and have additional toppings compared to the pastor. out of the three, pastor was my personal favorite because the meat was soo flavorful. the other two were decently good as well, just the flavor of the meat wasn't as pronounced to me. I absolutely love their self-serving toppings/salsa bar because I am guilty of being that person asking for extra everything, so it's nice to be able to fully help myself and not bother someone else for it. The mild and medium salsas were my favorite (they were pretty much the same spice level tbh both were mild). Now lemme get started on their pickled carrots and ONIONS, especially the onions. They're absolutely delicious. I am a fiend for pickled veggies and these were so good to include when taking a bite out of my taco or as a follow up bite for some crunch and acidity. I have had carrots served with my tacos at some other places, but nothing like this. The ones I've had before were bland and flavorless while these ones were a delightful burst of subtle pickly tastiness. the mango marg was pretty good, but could use more tequila imo. it was pretty sweet and juicelike. i do appreciate that it is a decent size tho and came with a salted rim. also, this location only has outdoor seating. Recently returned to the "Mesa" after many years. So many options here in Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa doesn't always come to mind. Well, 2 weeks back it was my choice for tacos on a Tuesday so I wanted to revive my love for Taco Mesa. She had the hard shell chicken and soft carnitas taco. I chose the fish and shredded beef hard shell. Everything was outstanding and memories were confirmed. Fast forward another week and the wifey wanted a repeat (rerun). Well we duplicated our same order but started with chips and guacamole....a great appetizer! Well, afterwards we both remarked that our hardshell tacos weren't as good as previous. The food was good, but the service from the guy who took my order was probably the rudest interaction I've ever had. He made it clear we didn't tip him to his satisfaction immediately and when I went in to order a taco to-go at the end of our meal for my family member at home, the server wouldn't even make eye contact or acknowledge me. Came here on a Friday afternoon with my friends after pickleball because they wanted delicious Mexican food and recommended this place to me. They told me how good this place is and I definitely had to try it! Coming here you see they only have outside seating and you order from the inside. My friend recommended me their crispy beef taco and their steak torta which we both got and shared. Steak Torta- with the beans and rice it was definitely a great combination. The steak was flavorful and with their salsa it added some delicious spice to it. Their breading too was good and it was slightly sweet too! Overall would highly recommend it! Crispy Beef taco- to be honest I thought this was going to be grounded beef however it ended up being shredded beef! The beef was delicious and the taco shell was not bad. Overall this place is awesome! They have great customer service and they have the salsa bar out. They also have onions and carrots. Their aqua Fresca is also not sweet and it's delicious too. Tasty tacos! Came on taco Tuesday and got the al pastor and alambre tacos. The alambre is packed with flavor, almost reminiscent of the bacon wrapped hotdogs you get after a concert/sporting event, combined with fresh carne asada and melted cheese. Big plus for the open salsa bar with mild, medium and spicy options, as well as the fan favorite escabeche. Order some chips and whet your appetite while you wait on your order. A word to the wise - skip the "award winning" margarita and go for a Mexican beer instead. read more

We missed eating here as we had moved a decade ago to the other side of the harbor. We like their other restaurant near us called Taco Rosa which is a larger, regular restaurant and different menu. Taco Mesa however is unique. The food has always been very good and many unique recipes. It isn't the typical Mexican fast food people may expect. I've always felt thought is carefully given to each items components. Years ago they even occasionally had lobster bisque. The night we returned they has Maine Lobster Tacos (one shown in photo) which my wife ordered and I'll definitely get next time. The salmon taco accompanied the lobster taco and it was a larger piece of delicious salmon than anticipated. Yum! I ordered their Mesa Burrito with blackened chicken because it has lots of veggies and I was trying to be good before pigging out at holiday meals. The burrito was very good but after seeing the lobster taco, I don't know what I was thinking. We finished with some of their wonderful flan. This location requires sitting in open air semi-enclosed patio. Considering it was cold that night we were still comfortable because they have nicely adjusted heaters. read more

One of the best authentic mexican place you'll find near Costa Mesa, Irvine and Newport area. It's one of the restaurants where not only do you get enough portions to take home but it also tastes really good. The people that work here def recognize their regulars and do there best to provide good service. Don't let those emotion filled reviews turn you away from trying this place out for yourself. This place also has a cute hipster twist to it with its decor and some delicious margaritas. While the portion of lobster meat was generous, it tasted frozen and cardboard-like, definitely not fresh and certainly not worth the premium cost. My husband had the Chilaquiles with "steak." He found the chilaquiles themselves to be completely flavorless, and only managed to eat the steak portion. Our son's experience was just as bad; he wouldn't touch his chicken tenders and only ate the rice from his dad's plate. ​Even the sides were poor. The guacamole clearly tasted like it came from a pouch, loaded with vinegar instead of being made fresh. After spending over $100 for our family of three, the only thing we were able to consume were our drinks. We ended up throwing away nearly all of our meal. My son ate three quarters of his was not happy with his either. Both were bland and not much flavor.
