Food is amazing some of the best birria I've tried! Compared to other tacos spots this one is one of my favorite!

I no longer live in CA, read the good reviews for this spot nearby my folks so decided to give it a try. I was excited when I walked in and looked at their menu. They served cabeza and lengua tacos which is a good indication that this is authentic mexican food and not watered down for "gringos". I missed having pozole and was excited when I saw it on the menu, so I ordered it. My sisters ordered a fish & pastor tacos and menudo. When we got our food we were overall disappointed. The pastor tacos were good, but everything else was meh. The broth of the pozole was so bland and with no spices & chiles. I don't even think I could taste any salt. Pork had zero flavor. The fish tacos were made with salmon which was odd, but it had no flavor. Menudo was just as bad. Unfortunately, I don't think the cooks are even adding spices to any of their dishes. We won't be back and will go to another mexican restaurant with better comida. read more

Due to the reviews for this restaurant I decided to visit since I was was craving shrimp tacos; I was greeted right away and the lady that took my order was very nice and helpful when I was a bit confused about a couple of items that I was thinking to order. The spacing isn't to big but just right with tables for dining in. I order 2 taco Gobernador I ask for the sauce to be put on the side just in case it was to spicy, which it definitely was to spicy for me but I'm sure for others they will love it, the flavors were ok i would give it a 6'out of 10. The Quesatacos I had high expectations maybe to high I would give it a 6 out of 10 as well. All 4 tacos were $19 which to me is kinda expensive. Overall I may go back again to try the keto tacos but not sure yet. read more

Tacos were so good. I had cecina, asada and carnitas (carnitas tacos are on a bigger tortilla) to try each one since it was my first time there. They have more options but I decided to try these first. My number one was cecina and not all taco places offer it on their menu. It's not hard beef jerky but cooked well. I didn't think the salsas were spicy. It was pretty calm with Hispanic rock playing in the background. Staff was also really friendly and attentive. Definitely will be back soon! read more

So happy to find a great place to satisfy my Taco Tuesday cravings and what's even better is that they now offer menudo and pozole on the weekdays. Most places only offer menudo and pozole on the weekends, so I was pretty ecstatic about not having to wait until the weekends to get my cravings satisfied. So far I've had their street tacos and have been pretty content. The only reason why one star was knocked off was because one time we ordered lengua (tongue) tacos and somehow got tripa (tripe) tacos, which I was not a big fan of. The next time I ordered a menudo, but got a pozole instead. While the pozole was tasty, I was really craving menudo. They also forgot to give us our tortillas....Luckily, our orders have been correct after that, so maybe we just happened to be unlucky twice. Just make sure to check your order before you leave the establishment. Despite the minor mishaps, I still go back because the food is good and the service is prompt. Typically isn't super flavorful so make sure to add salsa and other condiments to your liking. -Buche (Stomach): Not rubbery, which means they didn't overcook it. Way more flavorful than I expected. -Al Pastor: Oh so flavorful and tender. Now if only I had a slice of pineapple to go with it, it'd be even better! -Tripa (Tripe): Not a big fan of the tripe here. It tastes way too fishy/grassy for my liking. Here are the soups that I've tried: -Menudo: Decent amount of tripe in the soup. The broth isn't the best that I've had but still satisfied my menudo cravings. This was my first time ordering from here. I ordered three birria tacos and assumed consume would automatically come with it, I was wrong. I walked out and looked in my bag to notice it was not there. I went back inside and was told it is a side order. I looked on the menu and did not see it listed. I was confused because I have never had to pay extra for consume when ordering birria tacos. I went to the counter to pay and was charged $2.18. If someone orders birria tacos, you would think they would let you know that consume is not included and would be an extra charge, especially to avoid driving home to figure it out after the fact. The flavor was ok at best and to top it off, one of my tacos has some chopped up bone in it. Not going back. Very disappointed. read more

Sombrero Street, the place El Jefe replaced was there for decades and I used to go there with parents as a kid. I hadn't been in years so when I saw it was gone I made a mental note to try this place out. It's a no frills place as far as ambience but after ordering my food that wasn't important. You order at counter and then take a seat. Beer and margaritas are available along with soda and water. They have a fresh salsa bar with about 5 different spicy levels and the two I picked were delicious. I went with the veggie burrito which had grilled onions. I was pleasantly surprised and quite frankly impressed of how tasty my burrito was. Can't describe it accurately but when you have authentic Mexican food, it just has a different taste to it. After getting needed CNG for my commuter car we were looking for a well regarded and highly rated Mexican taco place and El Jefe came up. We gave it a try.... Al Pastor tacos, Birria place and horchata, all good and tasty but not too outstanding... we did appreciate the consomme which really elevated the flavor of the tacos. We may be back at some point (probably after fueling up) but we have loads of really good Mexican options close to home. read more

This restaurant is nice and clean with quick customer service. I ordered a michelada and the carne asada fries. The michelada was really good and so were the fries. Meat/Bread Ratio is way way off. For a $13 tortas the meat was so little even with the cheapest protein option (el pastor). So much bread, so little protein, it doesnt make any sense. like 80% bread, 20% stuff inside which is like 5-10% protein. It's not the el pastor that come out of the spinning thing of meat so shouldn't be that expensive. It's a no for me. We try to go here at least twice a month. We normally get tacos de birria de res and chivo, taco de lengua or burritos de birria or lengua. The food is always tasty and well seasoned. The habanero salsa is the best, we love it so much we buy the 8 oz of it. We don't typically finish our food and end up having leftovers the next day which are still tasty. read more

So happy I finally stopped by here. The food is very flavorful. The shrimp and asada taco is THE BEST. Al pastor is marinated perfectly. Our friends had told us about Tacos El Jefe for some time now, and we finally went for the first time about a month ago...and we've been going weekly since! Tacos El Jefe is a corner store in a plaza just across from the Target. There is plenty of parking out front. There are also a a few small tables on the side, but they never get too full as most times I have been, people take the food to-go. Our favorite go-to orders have been: the beef birria quesadilla, the flautas (both chicken and potato are good!), and the tacos. I LOVE that they offer lengua! Street tacos used to be $1.30 per taco on Tuesdays, but just recently went up to $1.40. They have a salsa bar that also offers the standard onion-cilantro mix, limes, radishes, and pickled veggies. Service has always been pleasant whenever we come in, and our order comes out quickly. It's also a BIG plus for us that they accept card and Apple Pay! Overall, highly recommend Tacos El Jefe as a great local gem! read more

Tacos are great, I got the asada, Al pastor and chicken. I also got their horchata agua but it was too grainy tbh. The cucumber lime one was too sweet for me. I think I'll just get regular cucumber water next time looks more refreshing anyway. We got there on a taco Tuesday around 6pm and it got so crowded as soon as we walked in we saw the line behind us and it was out the door. Despite how busy they were the ladies never rushed us or made us feel rushed. She offered me to taste the horchata and the cucumber lime water. We had kids with us so she also asked if it's okay not too add the cilantro and onions in the quesadilla because kids usually don't care for that stuff anyway. She was so sweet, they have a corner bar and their micheladas looked so good too.
