I've only tried the tacos and menudo here. The tacos are okay, not a lot of meat for what you pay. And the menudo don't even try it!! My menudo had a ton of hair and it smelled. I know that cow stomach may contain hair but If washed properly there should be no hair nor a smell! read more

Meh. Notsomuch. My family and I visited for the first time this week and left feeling underwhelmed and unsatisfied. Aside from the fact that fountain drink refills are limited to one per customer, I really take issue with their guacamole. It is clearly the kind that comes from a tub. It is watery, bland, smooth in texture - save for the occasional chunk of onion -and costs $3.75 on the side. There is nothing fresh or authentic about their guac. The Wholly Guacamole I buy at Raley's is far better than this. Also worth noting: I am from L.A.; avocados are like mana from heaven to us and Mexican food is pretty much our favorite pastime. We ordered a variety of dishes and while they were "okay", there was nothing that made any of us do a happy-food-dance in our seats (or even an appreciative head bob). Asada tacos didn't have much flavor, chicken in the wet burrito was (ironically) quite dry, and the chips are too salty. Also, they charge for chips! $2 for chips ... what self respecting Mexican restaurant charges for chips???? Lastly, I asked for a knife and the one I was given had meat on it...fresh meat. The food here is great, and the prices are good, but the staff at this location seems to have more attitude and less customer service than their other locations. I never feel like they care much for the customers here. I have had my order made wrong a few times, and there have even been times when my order was wrung up wrong and I was over charged, and when I mentioned it, they didn't really do anything about it. I wanted to change my review of this location. Previously I had mentioned this was one of my favorite taco joints in Reno, and it still is. I had also mentioned about being that one late guy that showed up with the open signs still on only to be turned away cause they were closed. We'll keep a long story short. The owner cares deeply about his business and cares for his customers and that makes an immense difference in service to the public and myself. I really did appreciate how he contacted me through yelp and let me know that he will make amends for the miscommunication we had that night. I will be returning for the GREAT food! I love this place! It's actual authentic Mexican food. (Trust me, I used to live in Mexico) the food is cheap and delicious. You can order pretty much any authentic Mexican dish you can think of, most Mexican restaurants in town don't offer half of the options this place does. The location is fantastic, the service is fast and friendly. What more can you ask for! I recommend bistek ranchero for lunch/dinner and chiliquiles with green sauce for breakfast! Yum! read more

This is a first time visit after seeing a Yelp review a year ago. Finally decided to go since the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory is next door and perfect for a first time try at Mexican for lunch and chocolate for dessert. It was excellent. The chicken fajitas my coworker Julie ordered, and I ordered the steak fajitas, and we asked for chips and salsa and the young man recommended the guacamole with chips which we added and they gave us a few more chips. Plenty of tortillas (4) for our fajitas and they were flaming hot and ready for eating. The seating was perfect. Arrive early like 11:20am before the crowd comes because there is a line by 11:45am, and it was getting packed by 12:05pm... Enjoy! We will definitely come back and enjoy. The service was extremely nice. We tipped well. We have other favorites but this is definitely a first and an impressive first. read more

$1 tacos! The dollar tacos are kind of small, but what do you expect for a buck? Includes choice of meat, cilantro, onions, and salsa on a corn tortilla. The Al Pastor here is probably the best i've had! It's juicy and packed with rich flavor. The carne asada was pretty good too, but the cabeza was a bit spongey. Too chewy for me. I also got a $4 burrito here. They make 'em the way i like it: flour tortilla, mexican rice, beans, meat, onions, cilantro and salsa (not pico de gallo, but saucey salsa). I wish they wrapped the burrito tighter because it was falling apart when I was holding it. $11.31 fed two people very well. Tacos, tacos, tacos. I've been struggling trying to find a cheap, easy-going Mexican restaurant that will fulfill my taco craving and hold me over until my next craving. I went to Tacos el Ray II in sparks before I came here, a long long time ago. To me, they are both equally good eats, but this location just happens to be so much more convenient. I do have to confess, that I forgot about these places, and how good they were the first time. After stopping by today to have their 3 steak taco combination for super cheap, I will be coming here more and more and more and more. My steak tacos came with sauteed to perfection onions and cilantro, with some raw onions on the side (YES!) in corn tortillas (platas). With any combination you get rice and re-fried beans on the side. In reality, because they double up the platas per taco, you can really have 6 tacos, three filled with what your choice of meat was, and then three extras to scoop that yummy bean/rice combo into. So six tacos, for less than 10 dollars?? Baby, I'm in 100%. One little tip, get the chips and salsa (splurge if you gotta). I feel like without that, you meal just can't be complete... even though there's 3+3 tacos in front of you. I also ask for lime, it gets the tacos a little wet....and they're just much more delish that way. read more

My girlfriend and I are currently on a mission to eat at every restaurant in the reno/Sparks area, so naturally this place was on our list. The atmosphere here was pretty good, but the food was real bad. Firstly the food took forever despite them not being very busy. I ordered a ground beef burrito, it didn't taste very good, it was incredibly salty, and I had a tough time finishing it. My girlfriend ordered a shredded beef burrito, which was significantly better than mine, perhaps they favored her because shes the same ethnicity as the owners, I guess we'll never know. I Give this place 1 star, while my girlfriend gives it 3 stars, which rounds it out to 2 stars. Place is pretty cheap too so there's not much to lose. read more

I love a good hole in the wall, and Tacos El Ray is a hole in wall for sure. We moved to Reno from San Diego and this is authentic Mexico Diner food. Made with finesse and a lot of love. I had a great shrimp cocktail tonight. Never had one but have seen others having them for a long time. Awesome! Balanced cold cilantro lime tomato base with avocado and tons of shrimp. Wow! Wife went for Carne Asada tacos and the kid had a quesadilla (sp ?) which were great. We've been going for years and never been disappointed. Cold beer and Mexican cokes. this is my go to place for real tacos. as well I recommend this place to any visitor from out of town looking for that meal that is as close to home cooked by abuelita as you can get. my go to is the carne asada tacos/tostadas. the el pastor is very tasty (and cooked on the spike tower thingy). in most cases the rice and beans need just a little more salt, but it could just be that growing up my family uses a lot of salt. the staff is always super friendly and working hard to get your meal out quickly. read more

So I lived in Southern California for years ( under duress) and had some of the best Mexican food around... also got to live in Arizona where my Mexican friends would lovingly cook for me. Homemade refried beans and tamales. Had lunch at tocos el Rey Thursday and my socks were blown off. Started with guacamole and fresh made chips oh my. The guacamole was perfect with some heat! And I had the #4 which is 3 tacos with beans and rice. I had the carne asada option, the beans are my measure of the rest of the meal... PERFECT.... the meat in tacos ...YUM. This is probably our favorite taqueria. Excellent carnitas, not greasy yet not dry either. Their chile rellenos are also excellent. They have this sauce that I haven't seen or tasted before, but it is very good. My son usually mixes it up with either sopes or shrimp tacos. The shrimp is interesting in that it is chopped and served. Also the quesadillas are big with a lot of cheese. One thing that is huge is the shrimp cocktails. Massive amount of shrimp in a big glass. El Ray reminds me of a cleaner version of Beto's. The food presentation is similar in but they offer more seafood dishes while at the same reasonable prices. For example, a plate of Carne Asada with all the usual fixings is $7.00. It's the best value of any restaurant in the new northwest. This place has become my new favorite hole in the wall. So I went tonight to check it out... service was good, I barely had to wait... the cashier was very nice , she gave me a sample of the horchata, which is so yummy! So I got a small cup of that. I ordered a burrito de camaron for me, and taco de pescado for my little one. She's taking a little nap before eating but I am just loving this shrimp burrito! So good! !!Gracias!! I love this place! Great food, great service, and great prices. They have a great variety in their menu (they even serve breakfast), and I've yet to find a dish I haven't enjoyed. Their tacos with carnita meat cannot be beat, and the rice and beans served with their combination plates are always delicious. If you're craving a margarita with your Mexican food, get it to go and make one at home. I found their margaritas to be a bit too sweet for my taste.
