This place is in a very nice part of town. I love the selection as it is the main Mexican dishes that people order the most. But my liking ends there. The wait here is usually FOR-EVER! I almost always want to bring a book when ordering here because the service is very slow. It also doesn't matter if you're ordering to go, or dining in, as I have tried doing both. Both sucked! The wait is so worth it once you have the food though. I always order chicken enchiladas doused in my chili verde salsa! YUMMM! Very friendly counter person. If you dine in they give you chips and salsa. Salsa has a little zing and a really interesting smoky flavor. All the prices are fantastic for what you get. I got a Carnitas Wet Burrito w/ green sauce really nice size, plenty of meat, tasty green sauce with melted cheese on top . I also got 2 Al Pastor and 2 Carne Asada tacos. Great flavor profile. Did add some hot sauce cause I like it spicy, but they were great on their own. 2/3 of the burrito went home, and I am a big eater, but tacos filled me up. Wife ordered fish taco combo plate they were great and retried beans. Wife is a aficionado of re-fried beans ( death row meal side) she gave them a 7 out of 10. The beef flautas were good and homemade. Got kid the quesadilla it was huge. People kept filing through the door the whole time as we ate, but they kept everything flowing smooth. The tacos are great, there was no exception from the tacos al pastor - carnitas - birrea - buche - cabeza whiche were the ones we tried. Think would taste even better to eat in we ordered to go at the end of the night. The salsa was flavorful. The tacos are easily 5 stars. This review covers a catered event for 75 for an outdoor graduation party in May. Tacos el Rey provides a very generous amount of food for the price. (I wanted Famous Dave's because we have had their catering before, but it wasn't in our grad budget.) The guacamole went so fast - we should have ordered more - but we had already tripled our guac order to begin with! If you cater, your guac plan s/b: 1.) order more 2.) doctor theirs up with more avocados, or 3.) make a half gallon of your own! Also, the red salsa goes faster than the green, so order extra red. They gave us a ton of fresh homemade chips and we never finished them all - I even bought Dollar Store baskets and placed chips on the tables. Great service and set up!!! Probably one of the worst Mexican food experiences of my life! The biggest offense being that their crispy Taco comes from a box (like you would find from Taco Bell or Del Taco)! The chicken enchilada had obviously been microwaved (but to the point that it was visibly dry) and had no melted cheese on top of it with sauce. The best thing on the trio platter was the sope (which was also microwaved but the masa seemed to hold up better to the reheating). I would say that I have eaten there on average once a week ever since they opened, before that going back over twenty years I used to eat at the original Sutro location. Today I was hungry just before noon and while Westbound on 8th street heading on to I80 West I made a split second decision and dove into Roberto's. Take a look at that Review. I just looked over some recent Reviews one of which gave them a Poor Rating stating that the Guacamole obviously came out of a tub. The Guacamole at Tacos El Rey is Stellar, always FRESH, as if two minutes before you order it it wasn't guacamole at all, it was a couple of fresh avocados still in the skin. Everyone of my friends that I have brought there over the years have said that the guacamole was probably the best that they had ever had. I have eaten at Top Restaurants all over the country, from Morton's to Ruth's Chris, Emeril's, The Oceanaire, Gene & Georgeti, Ron Sushi, The Tadich Grill, Steak Houses, Fish Houses, Italian, French, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese and Mexican, I could go on and on because believe me the list is long... Our family loves Mexican food and, after very good reviews and receiving coupon in Valpak for this location, we decided to give it a try for my daughter's birthday. I called to place an order and told them I had a coupon and was immediately told "no, we don't have that coupon." This was literally the day after receiving the coupon. I explained again that I had just received this and wanted to try it and the lady that answered, very curtly told me "no, you're wrong and we don't have that coupon." I asked to speak to a manager and was told that there would be no manager in the store until Monday (this was a Saturday). I asked what her name was and she refused to tell me. Normally, I would absolutely go to a manager first with an issue like this but, given there are apparently no managers available in this store, I am forced to share this review far and wide. I have never in my life experienced customer service like this and, needless to say, I will not be visiting Tacos El Rey or using Valpak again. Definitely disappointed but no food is good enough to excuse this kind of customer service. read more

Very upset with the service today, usually it's not as bad. Our friend ordered right after us, and we were through with eating our food by the time he finally got his...plus the people who came in after us were served their food before him as well. We let the employees know that he also ordered an orange juice, which he didn't get until he was about halfway through his plate. We found it interesting that another table got an orange juice delivered to them before us, which that table sent back 5 minutes later because I don't think they ordered it. The lady took it away and came out less than 30 seconds later with our friends orange juice. I'm guessing they just gave us the orange juice they had at the other table. This was the second time we have eaten here and will never again! First they messed up my order. (4 carne asada tacos. They gave me 3 carne asada and one carnitas) Not a big deal at all but the lady at the counter was completely rude and argumentative about it. Then to top it off she rudely took my plate and handed it back to the cook who then ate the carnitas taco right off my plate in front of me and proceeded to make my replacement taco with the same ungloved hand that he just ate off of my plate with. Never again will my family eat here and I will be contacting the health department regarding the improper food handling. Ugh. read more

Tacos el Ray is THE best Mexican food in tuolumne county hands down. People complain because it takes too long to get there food but that's because they are making it fresh as soon as you order it. If you don't have time to wait I suggest calling your order in before you start driving there so it's already being made for you by the time you get there. Wide variety on there menu. I was hesitant about trying this place because I had a bad experience at the other location, but I'm glad I did! I tried their carne asada tacos, and they were seriously some of the best tacos I've had anywhere (better than some of the tacos from southern California, even). My favourite part about them was the salsa - it was flawless, so much so that after I finished the tacos, I drank the salsa as if it were soup.
