It was a very good meal. Here's what I had, two tripa tacos and a carne asada vampiro. It was $16 for those items. Man, that's expensive for a taco truck. It was good, but I was thinking that this might be the best ever. It wasn't that. Just as good as any taco truck. Still good, but I'm glad I went because it wasn't special for me and I no longer have to be bound by curiosity. I'll be able to get this experience elsewhere for a lot less money. To me the GOAT is Tire Shop Taqueria in downtown LA. It's still very inexpensive there, and every bite is a savor. I live in Hermosa Beach, and we have an outpost of tacos Tamix. Luckily for me, this didn't dethrone that place So, I have a new rating system......I will write what I feel honestly about an establishment. My boyfriend was craving these all the way from west LA! So we drove 40 min to satisfy his craving haha, and they did not disappoint!Saw this place on La Times 101 best restaurants one year. Ordered a carne asda taco and an adobado taco in both and flour tortilla and corn tortilla. I love the flour tortilla so much!!!! It had nice charred flavor to it that was delicious. Would just get the flour next time! It's a food truck. There was no line to place our order but getting our food took around 15 min. Food came with onions, peppers, salsas and pico de gallo! This is a legit 5 star based solely on their food. This is a food truck off Downey Ave tucked in between businesses. Not sure if their brick & mortar in Whittier just is as good, but the truck was amaze-balls. What separates this truck from other establishments is their style of cooking, cooking, and salsa flavors. They are from the mexican state of Sinaloa, specifically the tourist city if Mazatlan. Similar to sinaloa/sonora style food. They have a small menu, i believe just 3 proteins, Asada(grilled steak), Adobada(marinated pork), and Tripas(grilled beef tripe). I believe they used to have just 2. My order: Taco de Asada in a flour tortilla, another in corn tortilla, a tripe taco, and a Chorreada. May might not be familiar with this type of taco. Its a hardened corn tortilla flat shell, slathered with "Asientos" which is a type of sediment left over after frying pork, topped with your choice of protein. Their sauces are delicious, a bit different from the standard So-cal sauces we are used to. They shower the tacos in 2 sauces, one for spice, the other chunkier red sauce is all for taste. For my sister's birthday we camped along the street in Long Beach and filled up on tacos, tostadas, quesadillas, vampiros, and tortas at the Tacos La Carreta food truck off of Downey and 69th street. The service was quick, friendly, and with a smile. It was so tasty and delicious that we kept going back for more. Another taco, another quesadilla, the birthday girl even had to try the vampiro. Delicious truck for vampiros and chorreadas. I've had vampiros before and love the crunch you get from the tostada and the fresh onions and cabbage to balance its' heaviness. It was my first time trying a chorreada which is the same thing except it has the pork fat on it as well. I will now always be going for the chorreada over a vampiro if I have the choice because the moist chicharron was definitely a great addition. Very hyped up taco truck, unfortunately does not live up to the hype (for me). Came by with my partner and we ordered the classic asada tacos, a quesadilla with asada, and a vampiro to try. We split the quesadilla and the vampiro and it ended up being easily enough food for two. The portions are large enough. You also get a bunch of sides for the quesadilla (some guac paste, some pico, some hot peppers and onions, and a sliced up cucumber). It was altogether $20. However, I just did not find the taste of the meat to be anything special, particularly given all the great reviews I'd read before driving over to try this place in North Long Beach. Actually I found everything rather bland. The quesadilla was more like a wrap with the same taco filling and a small amount of melted cheese. The vampiro was just the same flavors as the quesadilla but on a toasted corn tortilla. All fine but nothing special. I'd say it's true that there's an equal or better tasting taco, from an authentic truck or shop, in nearly every city in LA county and OC. I wouldn't go out of my way to return to La Carreta. The truck was packed when we came to order around 8pm on a weekend. There's a few spots to sit truck-side, but I personally wouldn't. We saw around a thousand flies (no exaggeration) sitting on the metal ledge of the truck and flying around under its lights. They must love the food, probably more than I did. I appreciate the experience and the chance to try a new truck. Unless I'm in the specific area I won't be coming back, but YMMV. read more

4++ Taco truck located in what seems to be an industrial area of the very north border of North Long Beach. I only say that because when I first looked up the location/ map, I had to do a double take and was like no way that's Long Beach! Anyway, it is. So this place has two types or cuts of protein and that's carne asada and tripa. They specialize in Sinaloa style tacos and other staples. The vibe here, at least on a Monday night, is very chill. There was barely anyone there and I ate at a seat located on the side of the truck. It got a bit busier while I was there - I'm guessing people picking dinner on the way home or who work in the area. I ordered what they are known for or their popular items: An asada torito - their award/contest winner (more mentioned below) - mesquite-grilled carne asada on a flour tortilla with a roasted Anaheim green chile and a little cheese. For the layperson, such as myself, it was almost a cross between a burrito and a soft taco...which makes me wonder if that's where the name was derived from. A chorreada - a carne asada specialty from Mazatlan, on a thick tortilla or in this case two tortillas (?), some asiento, melted cheese, then covered with pico de gallo, grated cabbage, avocado salsa, and a mild red salsa A vampiro with tripa - similar to the chorreada, but there was a crisp layer of tortilla which gives the vampiro the signature crunchiness. The food was so great. The smokiness from the meats and chile went so well with the salsas. I probably ordered way more food than I needed, but my eyes were bigger than my stomach and this location is not exactly convenient for me relative to where I live. It might seem pricey, but the items are pretty large. I honestly could been satisfied with one item...but instead, I ended up getting three haha. Now, instead of a salsa/ toppings bar or area (which is my preference), they give you a package of the salsas and toppings which for the most part are individually wrapped up in mostly small plastic bags. Probably not an issue when taking the food to go, but I was sitting at the side of the truck trying to untie each baggy. I could have torn them open, but I did order a lot of food so was thinking I might need to save some of the salsa. Much like a lot of other folks, this got on my radar because of its win for Judge's choice at the '23 LA Taco Madness and it garnering more attention as it started popping up on more and more lists. This place is sooo good. Their meat has a strong smoky flavor and I'm addicted. My husband likes the Torito. It has a green chili, meat of choice, cheese, cabbage and onion in a flour tortilla. Me and the kids prefer the quesadillas, which is the same thing but without the chili. Tortillas are made from scratch. The salsas are decent, we all like the avocado sauce. If you want a kick, eat the grilled jalapeños they give on the side. Their portions are big, my husband and I each get two items. The kids only eat one. Prices are very reasonable. Only one type of protein offered, but man..it's so good. Tacos La Carreta is the winner of '23 LA Taco Taco madness, Judge's choice for it's Asada Torito. The same taco is mentioned in other lists (like Infatuation) for best tacos in LA....wouldn't be surprised if the owners end up on a Netflix food series sometime soon. So we decided to make a trek to North Long Beach on a Monday night (unlike other taco trucks, they close at 9pm). Doing a little research on-line, found out that the owners live in Paramount but since that city does not allow food trucks, this current location (south side of E 69th St between Obispo and Downey Ave) has been the location even before COVID. We found street parking on that same side as soon as we saw the flashing signs proclaiming Sinaloan tacos. And it has easy access to the 91 freeway, for non-locals coming this far. They put up 4 metal stools for those who want to eat there, but those were already occupied and most people were doing carry-out, including us. Strangely, there really isn't a menu sign (sure there is a small sign with the types of food...but no prices). They only accept cash, but the receipt given is printed and useful when picking your food up. There is no condiment or salsa bar here...any order will come with carry-out packages of salsas (5 different types), sliced cucumbers, and grilled white onions with one roasted hatch pepper. And unlike other places, they gave us enough salsa. After placing the order, it took about 12 minutes for the food to be prepared, packaged, and handed to us. It's a smooth operation. We took the 91 then 710 back home, opened up our bag, and dug in. All four items (taco dorado, vampiro, torito, quesadilla) used the same, chopped carne asada and it was mounded on each item. The meat had so much flavor, smoky from the mesquite wood (I read that on-line...not good enough to distinguish the different types by taste alone). They can't be doing that at the food truck, so wondering if they are cooking the meat somewhere else and bringing it here (it didn't smell like smoke anywhere close to the food truck). One distinct topping they put on their items is a combo of raw, finely chopped cabbage and red onion...you can request it off if you want. The taco dorado was street taco size and was open faced. The vampiro was a bit bigger, still open faced, but has a layer of melted cheese at the bottom. Both used a corn tortilla. The quesadilla and torito were similar in size and taste, using a really good flour tortilla, except the quesadilla had a lot of melted cheese while the torito had the grilled hatch pepper in the middle. Every bite had that strong Smokey taste, and because the beef had been chopped finely, relatively easy to chew. Next time, I would get more of the quesadilla and try a different salsa in each bite. Of course, as I'm writing this, I can't find my receipt and strangely I can't find prices for this place anywhere on-line. So guestimating, since the total for the 4 items was $20 out the door, thinking the taco was either $3 or $3.50 and the toritos being $6 or $7. Definitely on the high side for a food truck, but imo, worth it. read more

First time at Tacos La Carreta. I have to admit that I was super excited to try them after their LA Taco Madness Best in Show win in May. We are huge taco lovers and have been to sooo many Birria and Tijuana style taco places throughout LAC & OC but never to one that serves Sinaloan-style tacos. I had been reading some of the other reviews for La Carreta and some mentioned that it was pricey. The tacos were $6 each; given the size and quality of ingredients, this is completely comparable to almost any other taco joint we have experienced. Only small street-sized tacos or basic tacos dorado are going to be less expensive...and after all, you get what you pay for. We ordered the tortito asada tacos with everything (but we did get the chili salsa on the side as we were warned by the nice lady taking our order that it was spicy). The tacos were delicious! The meat was tender, just the right amount of cheese, and the salsas were flavorful. The chili salsa ended up being not too spicy at all for us and so next time we will get it put directly on top. We did wish, however, that there would have been more cabbage & red onion, and a little more char on the Anaheim pepper. They also give you a side of grilled onions and a pepper and both were delicious. We are so excited to have tried Sinaloan-style tacos and look forward to trying more from La Carreta as well as others. read more

Have you seen a lot of hype about Tacos La Carreta? I had and therefore my expectations were too high going in. I've followed them on Instagram for years. They are about a 15-20 minute drive from my sisters but I've never made it over until today. I like that they essentially dice the I expected to have a life changing taco and was underwhelmed. So I took a breath, and was more mindful. I realized that I gave eaten a lot of damn good tacos in my life. I have no criticism of the taco. I liked the taco. I just don't understand the hype. They made the LA Times Best 101 restaurants - https://www.latimes.com/food/list/101-best-restaurants-los-angeles. I did like that they had papas locas (crazy potatoes - which a taco made out of a potato. More like a baked potato with topping fillings instead of sour cream and bacon. If you haven't had one before you can try it here. The English call this a jacket potato, no? I don't eat baked potatoes as much as I should (like 1 a year) so I enjoyed LA has a lot of good places to get tacos yo. If this is your neighborhood spot or you need a place to eat and are nearby then you in store for a local treat. But if you have a really good taco place you like near you then I do not expect you'll decide that Tacos La Caretta is better. They are a solid taqueria for carne asadas... not sure I'd drive 45 minutes to get here though. read more

Saw this place on the LA times list as well, so definitely had to check them out. They're located right off the 91 in a small parking lot, they have stool seating on the truck where you can sit and eat the tacos fresh and the staff is super friendly. Tried their asada and tripas on both mais (corn) and harina (flour). Ordered two of each on each tortilla and wow was I surprised. When I eat tacos I'll usually go with a corn tortilla but their flour tortillas were a game changer! So good it had me wanting more! This is a place that I would definitely go out of my way to eat out! This place blew my expectations! The tacos were a bit pricey for a food truck $4/taco, but it's definitely worth it! There are a lot of places around LA where this price wouldn't be justified, but Tacos LaCarretera deserves all the hype read more

After sitting down at home and applying specific amounts of the provided salsa, this is a 10/10 bite of taco. the salsas, crunchy cabbage/onion thing they got going on, and the nicely crisped and charred bits of carne asada, all added up to a perfect taco bite. i've eaten alot of tacos. it's a misconception to think there exists some uber-taco that is on a higher level than all tacos before it. what this truck does is capture the essence of a taco, the purity of a taco. in a single bite, you get almost all the perfect notes of a taco, from a high quality tortilla, flavorful meets, good texture from the onions and toppings (in this case cabbage i believe), and the finishing salsa which binds everything up in parts that are greater as a whole. i highly recommend this truck's carne asada tacos if you want to taste a pure tasting, high quality taco read more

Ok listen to this, many moons ago I had some of my favorite tacos of all time in Mexico City. They were chile relleno tacos. I've been chasing the high off of the first bite of those tacos ever since. Fast forward to the first time I tried the Torreado from Tacos la carretera (not on their menu by the way), a giant taco in either a corn or flour tortilla with your choice of either asada or pork, mixed with greens, onion and Chile poblano (not a spicy chile for those who don't know, but it adds such a great flavor). Honestly I was blown away by how great the torreado was. I mean, it's instantly on my top 10 favorite places to eat just for that taco. You have to seek out this good truck and check it out. I waited in line for 20 minutes and waited an additional 20 minutes for my order and it was worth every minute. These tacos are restaurant quality. I mean they need a location. It's hard to find good quality tacos these days. I could be bias though because I think the tacos in Mazatlan Sinaloa are the best.... Which is why I love Tacos La Carreta... it's a piece of mazatlan but I don't have to hop on a plane to have it lol My favorite thing to order is the papa loca with carne asada. Everything about it is perfect. Even the salsa. The carne asada is very flavorful and tastes so good. Sometimes it can get a little "fatty" with the pieces of meat but I just pick those pieces out. Since there's no where to eat, (it's a taco truck duh) we just take it to go and eat it at home. Super easy! Service is good, they're very friendly and generous with their portions.
