This was my first time trying quesadillas de birria and they were delicious. The flavor was unexpected with hints of clove and other spices. It's sloppy to eat, but it is tasty. I also tried some of their regular tacos which I thought were just okay. I thought their al pastor and carne asada were a little dry and the shrimp taco was too wet. When it comes to Birria in Chicago this is the best! A friend of mine from work was telling me about this place that was close to us, and I had never had Birria before. We had a long lunch, and decided to try it and it was unbelievable and I've been back many times since. The Birria quesadillas are ridiculous, and the consommé that comes with is a super rich and spicy dipping sauce that brings it all together. Their chips were my favorite type. Their salsa was very good and had a little kick to it. My wife had the taco sampler, and I had the three Birria with rice and beans. This restaurant is known for their Birria's. It was my first time trying. quite honestly, it was good. I am more of a steak taco guy, kind of straightforward. This was a little bit different and more culturally based. Dipping into the consome was new to me as well but a welcome change from the traditional American corporate venues. Everyone I saw here ate the Birria. I like the double taco you need two for support. The beans and rice were fine. Wife had softshell tacos.gratuity is already included in your bill. They do take cards. The drinks, I was offered a glass of Coke or in a can. Each were three dollars apiece. No fountain service. I consumed this food so quickly I left no room for picture options. I have never had Birria before but I was glad this place was my first time, I've been trying to place weekends and Its always sold out. Was able to get some on a weekday evening no problem. You can place your order online and they tell you where you are in line to pick it up. The food was flavored well and the meat was tender to perfection . I'm back, as you know my last attempt at having Birria was a flop. Thanks to John Kingsley"s suggestion I have been satisfied. John suggested Tacotlan at 4312 w Fullerton Ave in chicago. You can't miss it the large blue sign is like a beacon when you drive past it. It's a narrow long family owned restaurant with bar seating and about 6 tables. The kitchen is in plain view which I like. I watched as a young man masterfully built each taco. Each tortilla was dipped in the braising liquid left from braising the goat meat. This is great method Because it enhances the flavor and to my surprise didn't make the tortilla soggy. I ordered birria tacos and birria tacos with cheese and birria flautas (goat wrapped in a tortilla and fried) I am pleased to say they were the bomb. Perfectly seasoned, juicy and with the addition of onions and cilantro each bite was awesome. The guacamole was ok, a little to citrusy for my liking. I give this restaurant a 5. Ended up trying this place because I saw it shared on social media by a few friends. I've seen birria tacos and how popular they are in other places and have been wanting to try them for a while. And Tacotlan did NOT disappoint. Everything was so flavorful! The consome and birria were amazing with just a hint of spice to tie all the flavors together nicely. Glad we got to finally try birria tacos! The birria at tacotlan is super popular and they sell out often, so we made sure to put in our order early. I only got the birria tacos but they were delicious! We dipped the tacos in the consume and it adds a next level flavor and juiciness to the tacos. It tastes very indulgent and after 3 tacos I was full. The only drawback of the meal was that the consume is way too salty to eat on its own. It is a very good complement to dip the tacos in but they give you a large cup of the consume. We had a lot left over but didn't know what to do with it since it was too salty to eat like soup. Overall a really fun experience! Definitely try the birria tacos (and other fun birria items) and be sure to put your order in early! read more

Definitely four-star birria tacos. This is a small unique restaurant with some really good unique food. The orchata and jamaica flavor water was the best I have ever had. We had the birria fries which were topped with shredded meat, cheese, and guacamole. The fries were just perfect crispy, soft inside, and with the perfect flavor. I had the three birria tacos which it was basically fried crispy tacos filled with goat shredded meat. They were very deliciously flavored and filling. Everyone had the tacos with the melted cheese which was more filling. My son had the bowl of spicy noodles with the birria. He loved it and even added the pouch of the more spicy powder which I thought was a bit salty but perfect for him. I definitely recommend this place and will be coming back here soon. read more

Been going to Tacotlan for some time and the food is outstanding but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention a bad experience involving an hour wait to get our food (family of 5) with three tables coming in after us and getting served before. I get it - sometimes things get crazy and backed up but no customer service was done to make up for a terrible dine-in experience and to make matters worse, the manager came super aggressive at us. We already paid and tipped and were trying to leave - next time, if you're not going to offer anything, no prob - but leave us alone. The damage is done and you don't want to hear about our complaint anyway unless you're willing to actually smooth things over and apologize. Poor play and even worse business decision, hence this review. As I said, the food is remarkable but definitely will think twice before coming in again as this experience REALLY soured the food for us. read more

My partner had been wanting to take me here for a long time, so I was really excited to check it out. Unfortunately, we were both incredibly disappointed. There seemed to be a lack of communication between the servers, as multiple people asked us if our order had been taken within a few minutes of sitting down. Ironically, that was the last time anyone acknowledged us for awhile. A couple minutes later, someone came up to us with food we didn't order and we told them we hadn't ordered yet, so it wasn't ours. Another server had to bring the plates to the correct table because the woman who brought us the wrong order seemed confused. Another 25 minutes went by before our server came to even take our order. We originally wanted nachos as an appetizer, but by the time she actually took our order, we were so hungry that we went to straight to getting tacos. Our food came in six minutes, which was great. I ordered three tacos and my partner ordered the steak torta. the birria taco was delicious, the carne asada was decent, and the Lalo's on the Beach was good, but the shrimp was a bit rubbery. My partner's torta was okay but he wasn't particularly impressed. After we finished eating, it took another 15 minutes for our waitress to take our plates and ask if we wanted the check. There weren't a lot of people on the patio and she spent most of that time wiping down tables while we were sitting there with clearly empty plates, ready to get going. When she finally did give us the check, it was x amount. Then after she ran it, for some reason, she added shrimp to my birria taco (which was not what I ordered) and it made our final bill go up. Pretty frustrating because it only took us one look over the check to see where the discrepancy was and when we pointed out the difference to her, she just shrugged and didn't change it before running the card. It wasn't the money aspect that was annoying, it was the fact that she asked us to confirm the amount, we said they were different amounts, and she just ignored it. I was warned when my friend brought me here that the service can be hit or miss. I see that from the reviews and I also see the owner being proactive about solving the issue by posting on IG tonight about hiring more people and also this afternoon we had three separate people including the owner making sure we were taken care of. She was super nice and not in a fake way to everyone I saw her come in contact and she made she her employees were staying on task. She's an owner that obviously cares about her guests. I ordered the birria torta with consume and a pineapple juice. The torta was stuff with lots of cheese (YES!) and meat. What threw me off in a good way, the torta was dipped in a chilli oil. The oil gave it another added depth of flavor and elevated it beyond a regular torta. That's using your cabeza senorita and a good way to stand out from the rest! The decor was nice and simple unlike some Mexican places that go way over the top. Seats were colorful chairs, simple table tops and a few nice paintings, Frida with the gun being my fave. The only thing that I wasn't a fan of, $40 (with tip) for the torta and pineapple juice. I feel that $20 with tip would be a better price point. Would I come back? Yes but I'd need to find something less expensive on the menu. read more
