Rubi's has a beautiful interior, large portions, and fresh, delicious food. The restaurant is fairly small with around 6 long tables and a large front window that opens when it's nice out. I ordered the al pastor taco and beef tongue quesadilla. I recommend the quesadillas--the cheese is worth the extra dollar. Their tortillas were super soft, thick, and large! I think it was the best part of the tacos. The al pastor was pretty average but the beef tongue came in the largest pieces I've ever had. They don't skimp on the meat. Also, they don't lie, the salsas are pretty spicy but they taste very good. The manager or owner came around a few times to ask how the food was and how we were doing which was super nice. I met a few friends at Rubi's on a busy Saturday afternoon. We arrived before noon, so we were lucky to find a table upon entry. The restaurant was bustling, but it was surprisingly cozy and intimate. It was a tight fit to get in and out trying to order, but we made it work. Given the limited space it would probably be better if there was at least one waitress on staff. It'd be much easier for her to take order versus patrons walking around constantly. I ordered the carne asada and chicken tinga tacos. The tacos were flavorful. The meat was succulent and well proportioned. My friends had the al pastor and lengua tacos, elote, quesadillas, rice, chips & guacamole. There were six people in my group and everyone loved the food. We all enjoyed ourselves immensely. We ended up leaving and heading to Pilsen Yards because it was crowded, and we knew we were holding up the table. We had to wait 25m for our order, felt like everyone that came after us (and potentially ordered online) got priority. The tacos are $6 a pop, which is a lot, but account for them being twice the size of usual ones in Pilsen area. The true power of Rubi's is in the tortillas. Very flavorful and surprisingly strong for the contents they hold. I had the asada, longanisa, pollo asado, and carne asada. Safe to say that was too big of an order. The meats were all right. Tasty but nothing that immediately stood out. Tried some of the elote as well, which was tasty. A bit more difficult to eat directly on the cob versus how other places serve it. The guacamole was very creamy, could use a bit more garlic/salt (ofcourse that's personal). Good to note is that Rubi's closes quite early. They're open 5 days a week, for 5 hours (11:00-6:00 at the time of writing). All in all fun spot to check out once, but a bit overhyped. read more

Visited friends in Chicago this past weekend and was told to check out Rubi's for their tacos. As someone from San Diego, I was curious how good the Mexican food in Chicago could be. I ordered chicken tinga tacos and my friend got an elote and we also shared chips and guac. I loved the handmade corn tortillas. They were very fluffy and flavorful. The chicken tinga was okay but has a sweet/spicy flavor that wasn't what I was expecting. I also wish they had more basic street tacos (grilled chicken, cilantro and onion). This is a nice authentic taco spot located on the west side.. You can park in the street. The staff were friendly and welcoming. You place your order and you sit down, but pick up your food when it's ready. It's affordable. The decor is nice. It's a quick grab and go place. There's limited seating and it can get crowded depending on the day and time. They close super early. A few hours before closing, they run out of some of the items like guacamole or rice and beans. Definitely recommend that you try but be mindful of the time of day that you try this place and the day of the week to get a better selection of variety. read more

When I'm in Pilsen or Little Village I have my go to spot and I never stray from it. My wife and kids were with me on this trip and they wanted to try something new. Full honesty, I had never heard of Rubi's and didn't know how much of a destination this place was for people. That being said, I was blown away by the food and service. Like sure they are a little pricier than other places on 18th St, but the tortillas are the best I've had in my life and homemade right in front of you. I got the steak quesadilla and the asada taco. My son has flag football not too far from here, so we decided to stop after we were done. I know Rubi's has a lot of acclaim and has been featured on a number of shows. I wanted to see if it was worth the hype. We got there a little after noon on a Saturday and there was a long line, but it moved pretty quickly. You order first and then find a seat. Seating is communal so you have several large tables and counter seating. There were a few tables set up along the sidewalk out front. We ordered some asada tacos, some Al pastor tacos, a asada quesadillas, and some elote. All the tortillas are handmade. The tacos were a little pricey but they were stuffed to the brim with meat. The elote was some of the best I've had in the city. They had some pretty unique salsas that were all flavorful and had packed with good heat. read more

Delicious steak tacos made with homemade corn tortillas. Now the steak isn't super tender but personally I like a little pull on my steak in my tacos. They don't serve gringo tacos no cheese or sour cream available but you can get the standard basic onion and cilantro and you can add lettuce and tomato to your taco. I've loved the Chicago Mexican food scene (especially in Pilsen) since I started coming here in the 1970's! Living for over thirty years in Los Angeles, which is the Motherland (except for Mexico itself) of this cuisine, I found Chicago to be a close second. Pilsen is definitely Chicago's East L.A.! With that opening paragraph being said, my revival in the Mexican food scene here in Chicago started with La Chaparrita in 2001; everything changed for me then. I remember Rubi's as a simple taco stand which is now an up and thriving restaurant. Their menu has expanded in leaps and bounds, but I still go for their tacos. They are big; I'll call them "Six Biters", compared to La Chaparrita "Three Biters". And, Rubi's tacos are delicious. I had two Mole Rojo con Puerco tacos with their savory hot sauce. Add a Ginger Ale (which I rarely have) to this lunch and I was one happy camper! read more

I generally don't have good experiences with restaurants that have been splashed all over social media. The food is usually mediocre if you're lucky and the experience can be hellish. I try to avoid them at all costs. I only ended up at Rubi's because the kickass birria place a few doors down was closed for vacation. The tacos really were outstanding. The lengua was tender and tasty and the the asada may be the best I've had. The meat was charred and smoky and all-around excellent. The mole taco was also delicious and rich. A little bit too rich maybe, but that doesn't take away from how good it was. The whole experience, taken in its entirety, was a true PIA. The line was long and other customers (read:TikTok slaves) kept pushing and jostling to take just the perfect selfie and other photos to prove they really were there. It didn't matter if you were standing in line, if you were in the way of their desired photo - duck! The service was just fine and even though the food lives up to the hype, the place is loud and crowded and some of the customers are major pains. YES! I highly recommend this restaurant! I personally love places where you can order right away, pick up your food, and just enjoy your meal without constant interruptions. No waiting 10 minutes for a check or asking to split the bill, this is a sit-down and EAT kind of place, and I'm all for it. I absolutely loved the carne asada torta and the Jamaica drink, I had the guava flavor and it was perfect. My friend had the lemonade and loved it too. My only complaint is about the salsas. I didn't see any sanitation happening after a table used a salsa bottle, and I've been to spots where the tips are cleaned immediately. This place reminds me of my grandma's house and my grandma's cooking. The ingredients are all super fresh, I love that it's family-owned. The place is just so refreshing and welcoming. My favorite go to here is the quesadillas, but the tacos are also great. They're bigger than most taco spots, so you don't need as many to feel full. We recently tried out the tacos at Rubi's, which has its roots as a Maxwell Street vendor but is now a storefront on 18th Street in Pilsen. It has a colorful interior with communal seating for diners. Order your food at the counter, and you are handed a buzzer that will go off once your order is ready. The food comes out fairly quickly, and the service seemed fine overall. There was always someone coming down the aisles to pick up garbage and so forth. At first we were taken aback by the prices of the tacos (6 bucks for one taco - yikes!). But we were just getting a snack, and of course we heard good things about the tacos. I really liked the pork taco with red mole sauce, it was a bit zingy but very flavorful. The "beef stew" taco was just OK, with enormous chunks of beef though I do not recall if it had much potato if any. My lovely wife liked her asada taco. I must say that the tacos are generously filled with ingredients, and the tortillas are homemade and seemed thicker than average to hold all the toppings together. read more

Soooooo good. Simple walk up restaurant with windows open to enjoy the last warm weather of the year. Quaint but perfect for an afternoon taco stop Friday before rush hour. Cute decor that is simple and gets the job done. I had the asada taco and tinga de pollo taco. My daughter ordered the queso quesadilla. I enjoyed my bites of her quesadilla trying to convince a toddler to try the food I gladly paid for. When I tell you these two tacos was more than enough food. It's worth the price. Meaty! And the homemade tortillas didn't drop one bit of the meat, fully saturated with juicy flavor and yes I added the green sauce. This is now my favorite taco spot in all of Chicago. The LA Dodgers fan who might be the owner or manager took great care of us and made sure we had everything we needed including providing instructions for how to order and clean up the table when we were done. My family and I stopped in after church because it came highly recommended by a friend. We got chicken and steak tortas, tacos, and rice, and it was just ok imo. I had the breaded chicken torta, there was more veggies than chicken on it so I ate mainly bread. My sister enjoyed her chicken tacos and my niece liked her steak tacos. I've been wanting to come to Rubis for a very long time. If it wasn't for covid they'd probably still be at the Maxwell Street Market. But they were forced to shut down and had to sell their tacos from their backyard for awhile. They were finally blessed with this current location and it appears they have had some great success. The staff he is gray. Very friendly and welcoming. They treat you like if you were visiting inside their home. The prices for their tacos on definitely a little on the high side but we'll worth it. They use quality ingredients and the tacos themselves are very filling. My wife ordered their Campechano taco with carne Asada and chicharron. I thought the meats would be mixed but it was basically half carne Asada and half chicharron. It was a very delicious taco. I've always wanted to try Huitlacoche and decided to order a taco here with their homemade blue corn tortilla. It was definitely different, something I've never tried before but loved every bite. The taco itself was a good portion but my boyfriend & I ended up getting 2 more tacos because we had room left. I like the taste of everything but their pork grinds taco was soft big piece of pork & not what I expected. I was assuming crunchy with salsa & when I got soft, I was sad. Their quesadillas are definitely to die for. I am a cheese feen & loved the cheese pull. The atmosphere was order in then sit down yourself & getting your own utensils, napkins, & sauces. My gf ran across a video on Tik Tok that featured this restaurant and after a few minutes of consideration we decided to give it a try. The part that sold us was hearing that they have home made tortillas only, and yes they were so good! One tip I recommend is to not order too much since the servings are pretty big. 2 chicken tacos and an horchata were more than enough for me. Taco Tuesday on a Thursday....... Our journey to find the best tacos in Chicago, took us to Pilsen......Love the ecclectic look of the shops and restaurants, particular on the street the restarutant is located on. ....Metered street parking......I was told to be sure to pay the meter.......This is a a heavy ticketed area.......We were warmly greeted as we entered. We opted to eat at the bar......As i'm seating there wait for my tacos, I was thinking Tequila. My carne asada tacos were up. My wife had a chiken quesadilla and a elote to go. Carne Asada served with onion and cilantro with limes on the side......Is there any other way? Paired with a Mexican coke. I usually don't need salsa but I wanted to try it. There is a community fridge with the salsa stored in them. My wife noticed a sign when we walked in saying the salsa was hot. I tired it before I out it on the taco.......There's a story where my wife put hot sauce on her tacos without tasting it, it was a thing.........Back to the tacos.......Excellent........Heavenly even.......The tortillas had to be homemade. The thickness of the tortilla held these stuffed tacos together perfectly. Sure meat was falling out the front and the back of the taco but not through it. 3 tacos were filling, more than might be greedy. The chicken quesadilla, was cheesey with pulled chiken......Delicious........Oh and the elote, that my wife ordered to go?
