Our family of four had the guacamole, carne asada platiillo, the carna asada burrito, chicken fajitas, and a custom-ordered plate of rice, beans, lettuce tomato, sour cream and tortillas for my 7-year-old. I'll be back to try the enchiladas and enchimoles. The food is quality, but not "fusion" or super-upscale. Just really good Mexican. The place is charming, family-run, with very friendly service. The owner came out as we finished our meal, and gave me free flan when my husband noted it was my birthday. It's also BYOB-a great plus. And, our bill was only $36 for 4 of us (before tip)!! Found this gem and got so much more than I expected. Recently I passed by and noticed there was a new place there, so took a family trip and decided to give it a try. Walking in the decor is so beautiful. So homey and authentic. Of course, greeted as if you were family and just came back home. So the food, I ordered the enchiladas and my husband steak tacos. The kids of course like to keep things simple with rice and beans and quesadillas. I usually order the same dish different places and see what they are about. Let me just say, after so many places, I am pleasantly surprised that these are by far the best I have ever tried. They were not drenched and soggy, they had a nice crispness but still the tortilla was flavorful with the sauce. My husbands steak tacos were such a hit for him, he took more home. Even the simple things the kids got they loved. Sometimes it's the places that remind you of going home to abuelas house that really do it. Delicious food that you'll need to save your appetite for! I placed an order for pick up on a Friday early evening and thankfully we were able to snag some of the last birria tacos for the day. The lady on the phone was accommodating enough to allow us to pick up our order late due to so much traffic but it was definitely worth the wait! I ordered 3 birria tacos which comes with consome, birria ramen kit, birria quesadilla frita, and horchata. The birria tacos are so delicious with a huge crunch when you dip it in the consome! The birria ramen kit we wanted was mild, but they unfortunately had only extra spicy left. However it wasn't as spicy as I thought it would be considering I'm not a spicy preferred foodie. The quesadilla was huge and it was delicious, although I would definitely stick to the tacos next time. The horchata was fairly watered down and wasn't as fresh. But the food overall was definitely worth trying, I recommend this place to definitely check out for birria tacos before they run out! read more

Last Thursday I went to Tacotlan as I have many times before because the food is delicious! The friendly server greeted me and advised me that there was a catering order that needed to be done so my food would take 20 minutes. No problem, completely understandable. I let her know I would be waiting in my truck parked right outside. They ask for your phone number when you order and said I'd receive a text when the food was done. Fast forward 45 minutes later, (lost track of time and was on a phone call working) I look up and see people walking out of the restaurant, and realized I hadn't received a call yet. When I go inside other customers were angry because they also waited almost an hour and wouldn't be getting their orders. I then found out that my order wasn't going to be made at all. No notice, no text, no call, basically just didn't care. I asked to speak to the manager and yes, I was complaining saying that it's great they have a catering order and I'm happy for them, but the everyday customers also matters, and it would have been nice to have some sort of customer service. The manager wouldn't even turn her head to speak or apologize to any of the customers or acknowledge that we had all been waiting a long time. When she finally turned around in disgust, she said she refuses to have a conversation because she was dealing with the catering order. I then asked where the owner was and the manager's boyfriend came out from behind the counter (who was really nice), informed me that the manager's sister was in fact the owner and he was the manager's boyfriend. The owner wasn't there. The sister is rude, clearly overwhelmed, and probably could have handled the situation better if she wasn't doing this huge catering order. The management could have informed us that no food was available by posting a "closed for private event" sign on the door instead of letting us order, pay, wait for an hour, and being completely disrespectful. You're not the only birria place in Chicago. When you start treating people like crap or serve shitty food, I promise you people will find another place to eat. read more

The cheesy shell is PERFECT, and one thing I can say is that Tacotlán really outdid itself with the birria itself. I forever reach for their Lalo's Steak on my torta (high quality arrachera) and their shrimp taco, when that bougie feeling overtakes you, is fire. Their Pastor is consistently flavorful and at least half as greasy as its neighbors to the East (if you know you know). Their horchata is delicious and not grainy and they have specials everyday of the week. They have all the heart and flavor you need from your local taco joint. The meat is so juicy and savory and the corn tortilla shell is so crispy, dipped in the consome makes me want to do a little happy dance with every bite. I love the little guy... and this is exactly what you are looking for when you want to support small business. This father/daughter duo is making birria something that will blow your mind! I had never had birria from a restaurant before but after watching their Instagram page for a little while, I decided to place an order for my husband and me one night. And can I tell you, it gave us the feels of a nice warm hug gives you... we weren't able to move from our seats after we had the food! My husband had the birria soup and I had the birria fries... and just writing about it is making me hungry for it again. LOL!! The restaurant is very adamant about online ordering and placing orders over the phone as well. Their orders are taken through an app called Cash Drop and it's very quick & easy. The app gives you a "number" to tell you what place you are in line for your order and they text you when your order is ready for pick up. You can also place orders through their website as well. The Friday after Thanksgiving, I had placed a catering order for my birthday, and boy they didn't disappoint. The family that I had over had never had birria and I was happy to get it from Tacotlan! The consume was on point, their rice (that we ordered when we went to pick up the food) was so good - not dry like I've had at other restaurants - and the additional add-on's that they give you for their birria were so fresh (the tortillas were nice and warm, the radishes, onions and cilantro were fresh!). The price that I paid for 6 people to eat was not bad at all! I would have paid more if I was going OUT to eat at a restaurant! WOW! I'm still amazed with how amazing my experience was for a grand opening. The service was great and very welcoming. I love the concept of ordering first and then finding our seats. It worked so well! We received our food fast and the Horchata and Jamaica were soooo good. My husband and I wanted to try a couple of things so the Taco Sample Platter was the best thing we could order. We tried 2 Carne Asada, 2 Al Pastor, 1 Chicken, 1 Rajas com Queso. Everything was delicious. I have to say though the one that stood out was the Al Pastor. SUCH A MUST. Thank you Lalo & Jessica for the invite! Our first choice for Mexican food closes early, and I have never been happier. I am going to dig this place up from the ground and bring it back to Cincinnati, employees and other patrons included. This is my favorite taco spot on Earth. I first went during the pandemic with my friends and it became our little tradition. We've all moved away now, and every time we come home we make sure to go here multiple times. It's the type of place that we get our food and don't speak to each other for 10 mins because it is so good and we're just munchin down. Service is amazing and fast and has never falted. The quesabirria tacos come with 3 and we are always full by the 2nd one. I love the vibe on the inside because they play fun music and the system for ordering is efficient. I would recommend dining in instead of taking out because the tacos are crispier that way, though both ways are incredible. The tacos themselves are so flavorful and we will literally drink the leftover consume on the way home. It's great leftover too, even though they become less crispy with time (naturally). I live in Colorado now and miss it so much. From time to time, they send out emails with coupon codes, which really helps because I'm a college student and they're a bit pricey. That being said, their prices are well worth it for the quality of the tacos; both the flavor and the meat itself. Additionally, their horchata is the perfect sweetness and I love the hibiscus drink as well. Always tough deciding between the two so I often get both. Love and miss you Tacotlan, and I'll see ya again over winter break, can't wait. Edit: I'd like to add that I've tried birria tacos at many other locations since and nothing compares to Tacotlan. New York, Denver, LA, Isla Mujeres Mexico, this is THE BEST.
