Our favorite was the Mushroom Carnitas but they were all excellent. We actually went for a second round of Mushroom Carnitas after eating dinner. They were that good! TL;DR If you're in the mood for Tacoria but you don't want your vegan friend to go hungry (or you are the vegan friend), you should come here instead. I tried the paneer quesabirria, my spouse had the paneer el diablo bowl, and we split an order of the twisted garlic esquites. I've had some really good meat birria, so I can confirm that Tacowala got their veg version correct. The quesabirria tacos themselves were well cooked through and appealingly browned on the outside, with plenty of filling and cheese. The consommé obviously was never going to have the same body as a stock that's full of animal gelatin. Instead, it's a dark, flavorful vegetable broth swimming with minced onion and cilantro, and you should absolutely drink the rest of it once you're out of tacos to dip. The esquites were creamy and delicious, with a lovely crispy topping and a hint of something South Asian in the seasoning. I didn't taste my spouse's lunch, but he was very happy with it and even had to take half home because he got full. I liked the person who served us. He not only took our order and cooked it himself, he even brought it out to our table. I didn't personally need an explanation of what to do with birria, but it came across as friendly and helpful and I was glad he didn't assume that I knew. I only have two critiques, and they're really minor. While the inside of the restaurant is bright and cheerful, and the music selection is fun, the volume was turned up so high that my hard of hearing spouse had to read my lips in order to have a conversation. I know the business reasons for doing that, but maybe turn it down a couple notches when things are slow? The other thing I could have wished for is a selection of less-sugary drinks, like Olipop or Spindrift, in addition to the taqueria standards of Mexican Coke and Jarritos. My daughter was visiting from out of town and located this vegan/vegetarian restaurant, which is also Mexican/Indian. Wasn't sure what to expect but the food was absolutely phenomenal. We really enjoyed Tacowala. The chips and salsa were tasty and spicy salsa was my favorite. We had the birria tacos and a very fun dish to try. Here's what you need to know: you will not miss the meat! Omnivore here, and I love eating vege/vegan when the dish is complete sans animal product. These tacos are incredibly balanced in flavor. Not a grain of salt missing or in excess. You have to have the mushroom carnitas and black magic tacos. And yes, I've had tacos for less than $4 at other places. But these dishes could legit be straight out of fine dining and I'd gladly be paying $8 for a "small plate" at a tablecloth & sparkling water kinda joint! Special was a cauliflower curry taco that was so good, I think it should be added to the regular menu. Wish we could come more often, but we are out of towners. In a larger market no doubt this place would be blowing up. It wasn't too noisy when we came and service was pleasant and fast. This is a great Mexican fusion restaurant. They catered a private event for my daughter and everything from the food, the packaging and the service that Amish provided was excellent. He even explained step by step on what goes into each taco that we ordered. I highly recommend their catering services. I actually wanted to use their Taco cart for our event, but I was bummed that they were already booked. Amazing food and very friendly and knowledgeable owner! The food and service here are inconsistent. We went to eat in once, and they only served everyone 1 taco per plate. This was after waiting an hour for our food. They had to then shut down early because they didn't have enough ingredients. We really enjoyed our one mini taco but left starving. The flavor was amazing and the spice as just right. We thought this was just because they business was new and they were working out kinks. Then, we finally ordered a huge tray of food from there for a small gathering-- all Indians. The mushroom tacos were insanely spicey. A few of our guests coughed as they took their first bites. We can handle spice, but this was over the top. No one touched the rest of the tacos- over $100 of food wasted. We called the owner, but he claimed they make it the same all the time. We have a hard time believing that. Don't think we'll be coming here again. So much potential, but inconsistent food and service. read more
