Taj Chaat House is my favorite place to get Indian snacks and samosa chaat. It is always busy and the food is always fresh. There is plenty of parking outside and usually the wait time is between 5 to 10 minutes before you can get your order ready. The prices are low but quality is quite good. I had the malai kofta recently here. Frankly the kofta filling was not that great and rich as it should be. Secondly there was no naan available and I had to have the parathas! That made a bad combo and parathas were not at all delicious. I don't want to sound too picky, hence I will visit here one more time to be sure if this place deserves 4-5 stars truly or not. On the price front it seems okay. Staff is really friendly and nice. The downside however could be the ambience and cleanliness. That area needs some improvement. read more

I like it here but would never come back without an Indian cohort. The set-up is unique, food categories are grouped on different pieces of paper (one piece for curries, one for appetizers, etc.) You pick up the different food lists, check the food you like on the respective paper, circle the level of spiciness, and hand it to the girl behind the counter who will then give you a buzzer that goes off when your food is ready. You can keep doing this over and over until you're full because you don't pay until you are finished eating. There's an island in the middle with different chutneys and toppings (a la Taco Cabana) which is always fun to try all the sides and sauces. I thought the food was great, very home-style, and cheap (lunch for two was around $10)!. But since I'm an Indian food neophyte I don't really have much experience to compare their food to other places. read more

Love this place! Authentic vegetarian Indian food. It is not a fancy dine-in but rather a food-court-esque type of feel as the food is served in styrofoam plates and plasticware. But don't be a snob about that...its all about the food! BEst Dosas. They have the BEST naan I've had in DFW. Owner is super sweet and nice and talked us through our first experience(if you have never had Indian food at a chaat house it may seem very overwhelming.) We visited dallas few weeks back and loved the concept of north and south foods. The podi for dosa is so delicious which makes u to crave for it again and again . Also the sambhar they have andra and tamil sambhar so we can try spicy and normal level . Chutneys also good . We bought some methi paratha for the travel and ate that few hours later and still it tasted so fresh with flavors of methi and masalas inside the paratha . Overview: Dirty, Poor Quality, Overpriced. Within 5 minutes of sitting next to a wall, we saw 3 German cockroaches coming out of crevices in the walls, right next to us! When we walked into the restaurant, there was chaos and no one helped explain their inefficient and confusing ordering system. When we ordered, we asked for descriptions of some of the dishes we were unfamiliar with (nothing is in English, which is usually a good sign, but not in this case) and instead of explaining, the lady added the items to our order. The food was of the poorest quality, the rice was crappy overcooked cheap long grain, all the curries had a layer of cheap grease on the surface, and everything was lukewarm! They cut too many corners on everything, the quality is poor, everything is served in styrofoam.... Absolutely disgusting, worst indian food I've ever had-will NEVER eat there again, and for two people, it came out to $40, no joke! read more

I've been coming here for the past three years and I love their chaat at this place. The service is fast and friendly. Not much I can say for ambience bc this place is a eat and go but the setup is highly noteworthy. I recently went to a place in So-Cal who tried the station concept and they failed miserably. I reviewed them and wrote they needed to learn from this place. The system for taking orders is very different but at least your food order wont get lost and you can eat first and then pay at the end. YUMMY!!! I love the vegetarian food here! I ordered Palak Paneer (spinach & Indian cheese) with the garlic naan and it was delicious. I had a bowl of the self-serve soup while I was waiting - make sure you get the "mild" instead of the "hot". I have to tell you, the red chilis floating in the "mild" should give you an indication of how true to the real thing the food is here (it was incredibly good!) I also tried the carrot halwa for dessert. I wasn't sure what it was until I got it and realized I've had this on buffets in the past. It's very rich, but very good. I have been to this place many time, mainly for their chaat varieties (Bhel puri etc). I took my non-indian colleagues who enjoys vegetarian food and they loved it. The owner is very courteous and I asked for his suggestions, he was more than helpful and we were impressed by his service. He made sure that we were happy with the food and took time out to understand what we may like. You can't go wrong with this place, if you enjoy indian-vegetarian food. There are tons of stuff on the menu and if you are unfamiliar with indian food you might get overwhelmed. But they do have menu with full description that you can ask for. OK so I have been going to this place ever since it opened back in 2006 and I'd have to say that some of their food is really good but the rest of very ordinary. The place has a rather cumbersome ordering procedure where you get a pager with a number, then note your order in a piece of paper and turn it in to a staff member with the pager number. Finally the pager lights up and you go to the station to pick up your food. I am not an operations and logistics specialist but seems there's got to be an easier way :) The good food : Any dosa or uthappam. They will customize it (soft/crisp, mild/spicy) as per your requirement. The dosas are massive and so perfectly cooked. The coconut chutney that goes with it is great but the sambhar (lentil soup) is just average. The uthapam, which is sorta like a pancake made from the same dosa batter takes about 10 minutes to cook but is worth the wait! The average food: All the varieties of chaat (nickname for street food from Mumbai) are very average. Considering the place is called a Chaat House...I had expected better. All varieties of chaat seem to have the same base of garbanzo bean curry. The bad food: The Pav Bhaji (mixed vegetable curry in butter) was very disappointing with the heat from the chili and spice masking any of the other flavors. Worse...it's supposed to be accompanied by Pav (yeasty rolls of Indian bread) but Taj took the shortcut and served it with a pasty hamburger bun....any self respecting person from Mumbai will tell you that's sacrilege!! They "filter coffee" was similarly abysmal. The bottom line is this place is owned and run by folks from South India and they need to stick to their core competencies (dosa etc.) which they make well and not western Indian stuff like chaat and pav bhaji. The prices are also higher than similar places ($6.50 for a dosa at Taj rivals full service Indian restaurants). As far as chaat goes - a better and cheaper option I have seen is a nearby grocery store named "Subzi Mandi" in Irving @Belt Line & Rochelle. Lastly avoid going to this place in Sunday afternoons - it's is just packed with folks visiting the nearby Indian temple. There's just too much chaos and your order takes forever. read more

My boyfriend who was raised in South India had been craving some South Indian food so I found this place on Yelp the other day. I went in on a Monday evening and saw that it was kind of packed with a line at the counter. :) I ordered a Malala dosa, tomato soup, rasmala and a mango lassi. First, the guy at the counter who took my order was super sweet! He asked me if I wanted my mango lassi "mild, medium or hot" I started to laugh and told him that they were sweet! He gave me the pager thing and told me that I could take a seat until they called out my number. I was a little disappointed that take out orders couldn't get free chutneys or the veggie soup that they offer if you dine in. The masala dosa I thought was going to be stuffed with the potatoes but it wasn't. They give you a cup of the potatoes and some chutney to dunk it in. The flavors were good. The tomato soup was a little sweet and the crouton like things were a little too oily. The rasmala was hot and I didn't eat it until it cooled down in the fridge but it was really good! The mango lassi was really the best thing that I bought there. Overall, the food is good but I wasn't blown away. Maybe next time we could go and eat there. I ordered the samosa chaat...the samosa are very mildly seasoned and the filling is primarily potato...I couldn't find a pea on mine. It was fair but requires more flavor. The vada pav was not tasty at all. There is no garlic chutney or even an onion to be found. They seem to provide green mint chutney rather than chutney made from cilantro and I'm not a fan of watered down sauces. Lastly I requested all of my food to be very spicy.
