There are so many Indian restaurants in Irving that it's hard to choose which one to try when craving Indian food. I have been to Taj Chaat House multiple times in the past and I must say that they have the most authentic and fresh tasting Indian food in the area. The restaurant is well maintained and the food is so tasteful. They only have vegetarian options so it is a good place to come to if that's what you're looking for. I always get a chaat from the chaat area and then some garlic naan and paneer bhurji. They make it fresh as you order it. They also have a little area on the side to get sambhar, pickled sides and salad from. All the chaats are delicious. I like to get the pani puri on the counter because you can modify the spice level of the water as you like and they make them one at a time for you as you eat them at the counter. The garlic naan is a must when you come here. They are probably the best ones I've tried in the area and you can taste the freshness. The manager of this eatery is a physco. Maybe he is a narccasist. When you order food, the manager will keep checking if you are "stealing" the "order ready beeper" while you leave the store. Moreover he shouts on his chefs and cooks which can be heard by every customer sitting in the store. Every single time I have been here, I get sick in the stomach, hear all the shouting right from the counter to the open kitchen and then while exiting the store, the manager will make sure he makes u feel humiliated in fornt of other by asking "did you return your beeper back?" Worst paani puri, its just boiled potates with puri's purcashed from a grocery store. Aloo samosa chaat comes with its own stale flavor and you would feel it is anything but that. Dont bother to order any other "full service" meals or roti with any curry, you are going to be dissapointed with the taste. I really hope some other chat house comes around this store and show these guys how chat should be made. oh yeah did I mention this place stinks? plus its a depressing place to be as the attitude of the staff there seems to do little justice to the word called 'customer service' or 'tasty food' Also the mango lassi, its good in taste but it upset my stomach for 3 days continously. Their menu is extensive, authentic, and 100% vegetarian! "Yes & Yes Foods", pshh... "Yes & Yes & Yes" is more like it! Based on yelp caveats about the cryptic menu and byzantine ordering procedure, I steeled myself for intense discomfort as I approached the counter... but it was SO EASY! Perhaps I had an especially friendly attendant, but she was super accommodating! As I began to order (you get a piece of paper and check off the items you want, like at Whichwich), she produced this 2" binder and deftly flipped to the requested dish: she made sure I knew exactly what I was ordering and went out of her way to explain every potential obscurity. Indeed, throughout the whole visit the staff was really kind and attentive... we even ended up with a few 'extras' to try, like a parantha and a dosa. What I Liked Most: The quality and authenticity of the food notwithstanding, my two favorite things about this place were (1) the chutney/sambar-bar, and (2) the buzzers that facilitate the ordering/paying process. First (1), that glorious bar! On offer was an unlimited supply of two soups (a spicy andhra rasam and a milder sambar), probably five chutneys (I tried the ginger, the peanut-garlic, the coconut, and the tomato-onion), a salty indian pickle mix, and these incredible fried chillies. I particularly enjoyed the sambar, peanut-garlic chutney, and the peppers. TERRIFIC! And (2), the buzzers. I had never seen this before in my life. It's like the kind you get when there's a long wait, except you carry it around with you the whole time. When you place your order, you are given a buzzer that is linked to your order... when your order is ready, the buzzer signals this by, well, buzzing, and you go claim your chow. If you want something else, you just go back and ask and they update your buzzer accordingly... its like a running tab of what you've eaten that also indicates when your food is ready. When you go to pay (at the end), just hand it to the cashier and boom, done. Easy. You don't have to deal with waitstaff nonsense: no phony conversation, no waiting for refills, no tipping. It is the IDEAL system; I was quite taken with it. Things That We Ordered (two people, extremely stuffed, under $20): Chaat-wise, we had pani puris OTC (street vendor style); this was our first encounter with these crispy, wet, bite-sized explosions of flavor.. they were probably top-notch, but I have no basis for comparison... If there's any chance you'll be discomfited by having to quickly consume a succession of unfamiliar foods with an audience of impatient, culturally savvy patrons, just ask to have them at your table instead. Our main course was the North Indian Thali, which comprised (to the best of my recollection) a vegetable korma, dal fry, aloo gobi, spinach (or methi?) dal, vegetable biryani, raita, papad, a samosa, a dosa, and a dessert mawa, all for $11. Everything was excellent; the samosa was perfect and the korma divine! I also ordered idli because I had never tried them; they're these little discus-shaped things made from fermented urad dal and they taste like tightly-compacted rice balls. They were good, especially when soaked in the sambar (which I think a typical way to eat them). Everything tends to be generously spiced, so be sure to notify them if you prefer a milder meal. Also, very no-frills, spare decor, almost fast-food style seating...all facts that I really liked... I came there expressly for eating, not for art-appreciation! This place is a trip. It's like someone decided to start a restaurant and said "one thing I want is to make the ordering process as confusing as possible." Well,mission accomplished. I've been here dozens of times and I still spend over ten minutes staring at their menu board thinking 'what the fuuu......'. But..........the food is great. The dosas seem to be one of their more popular items and rightfully so. Very big with a good, mild flavor. I usually just order a few random items, some garlic nan and it's always a decent amount of food for not too much dough. Order the fresh coconut for a drink. It's just a coconut with the top cut off and a straw stuck in, but it really seems to compliment Indian food. If you haven't been there but are thinking of going, give it a try. It really is good. It is vegetarian. You order by filling out slips of paper and handing it to whoever seems willing to take it from you. You get a buzzer and it rings when your food is ready. Be prepared for more confusion as, since different parts of the meal or meals will be done before others, the buzzer will go off at least a few times. Unless they decide to randomly NOT use the buzzer and instead call your number just to psych you out a bit. I met Chris B., Aimee Z., & Jamie H. here for lunch. So not only did I go to my first UYE (or in this case an unofficial UYE or UUYE), I ate my first real Indian meal. Ordering something that you have NO freaking idea what it is, is somewhat intimidating. Chris B. was a good guy to have around because he knows his stuff. I had some kind of paneer dish with naan. Outstanding! The naan was big and fluffy and made me all kinds of happy. I also ordered the Taj sampler from the starches section, which was a TON of food. I didn't realize how much stuff I had. It came with some kind of lentil donut type thing that was kind of like a giant falafel (which was meh--a little too greasy), some big puffy thing that tasted like a savory sopapilla (awesome), and a spongy thing that was like a giant, moist crumpet (it would have been awesome with some butter & strawberry preserves). It also came with three kinds of rice--only one of them was great. And some type of noodley stuff (like long vermicilli) in a sweet coconut milk sauce (awesome). Went here based on the good reviews... have loved Indian food for about 13 yrs... have enjoyed me some Tandoor in Arlington, Pasand in Irving, and Udipi Cafe in Richardson... Taj Chaat House lived up to the reviews. I loved everything about it. It's a complete dive from the outside - in one of the most drab, boring looking strip malls you could imagine. I was expecting it to be more of a dive on the inside based on other reviewers, but found it surprisingly pleasant, albeit pretty modest and bare bones. The FOOD... we tried the Bombay Masala Dosa which was excellent. My wife would've preferred the regular Masala Dosa because she didn't lke some of the extra ingredients like red pepper, but we could both tell it was quality. The Dahi Puri was amazing... probably our favorite of the meal. It's like a fried puff partly filled with chickpeas, with lots of fresh tomatoes, onions, and delicious sauces spooned on top. Very light and refreshing. Finally, we ordered the Madras Thali, which put simply is like a giant Indian combo platter... it came with rice, breads (paratha?), curries, soups, warm rice pudding, and extra sauces, etc. It was really a ton of food, and we couldn't finish everything. What I want to do next time: order more off the Chaat menu. I love that this place has more than your standard curries. Along the same lines, and switching to Japanese food, I have heard that Mr. Max (also in Irving) has more options than your standard sushi-centered Japanese restaurant. I love it when restaurants go a step beyond the ordinary, and do it well. Okay, now I gotta get all goofy hipster on you. What I loved... and what I've heard is a marker of good ethnic food... is that we were the only white people in there the entire time. I felt all cool and self-important, like my very presence christened me an ambassador for international peace and tolerance. I guess, in reality, the locals just know where to eat, and they didn't mind a couple of whities crashing their party. Okay, this is turning out to be my longest review ever... the only downside of this place: they are single-handedly creating an Irving landfill with all the styrofoam they use. I have not had more delicious chaat or tawa food anywhere else in the Metroplex. Simply put, this place puts any other place calling itself a chaat restaurant to shame. Or South Indian, for that matter! Best dosa, best parathas, best chaat. (And they always have chatni podi!) Not to mention some of the best and thickest sambhar I've ever had -- everything tastes as good as home-made. I can't resist coming to this place nearly every week when it's cold outside - what could be better than a nice cup of chai and some idli-sambhar when it's cold and raining? This review is for all the Gringo's out there. Walking into a place with a different menu and a different way of ordering definitely throws me out of my comfort zone. However, I really like trying places considered to be "hole in the wall" and I'm always up for a new experience. Right off the bat, I'm oh-so-completely confused. Where do I go? Where do I order? Where's the menu? Huh? Immediately, a young woman approaches and walks me through the process. BIG BONUS! I am familiar with Indian food, so at least I recognized some items on the menu. I ordered Korma, and some sort of spinach bread -- the naan was broken [cursed]. Thought it came with rice, but apparently not. No big deal tho. My buzzer thingie goes off to alert me that my food is ready. Okay so the presentation is not what I expected. Korma in a small serving cup, spinach bread, plain yogurt, and no rice --- all on a Styrofoam plate. Still I can deal. I don't necessarily require hard plates. Plus, for the price, it was completely acceptable. At least the food was spot on. Excellent food! All the gringos out there looking to try this place, definitely check out the on-line menu before going, bring a friend or ask for help when ordering. A few things to know about this place before you go 1. It's vegetarian. Not just vegetarian-friendly, but they do not serve meat. 2. They don't have descriptions of the food on their menu. You need to either know what you're doing, have someone with you who does, or have a smartphone that can quickly google 3. You must be hungry. Very, very hungry. I love Indian food and have had it a few dozen times in my life. So I thought I was prepared. But after a panic-stricken couple of minutes I was honestly calculating whether I'd offend anyone and/or annoy my boyfriend if I made a run for it and consulted Yelp for a nearby Indian restaurant that offered table service and handy-dandy menu descriptions. But the good Yelp reviews combined with a dash of cowardice led me to stay and give it a whirl. Boy, am I glad I did. Although I'm familiar with some Indian terms, I usually pay more attention to the descriptions than the names of dishes I order. So while I was familiar with words like paneer, naan and kheer, most of the menu left me confused. I finally settled on the North Indian thali (like a combo plate...when it doubt, go for a little of everything...) and the mixed chaat. After all, chaat was in the name of the place so I HAD to try it. When we stepped up to the counter, the nice woman answered some questions for us and we were off to the races. Our chaat was ready first, since it's an appetizer and was amazing. Absolutely delicious. It was kind of like Indian nachos - with a huge plate of some crunchy chip-like thing piled high with chick peas, cream, onions, some kind of fruit, and a bunch of other stuff. It was a huge plate and I knew I should stop eating to save room for my main meal to come, but it was excellent. I could easily make a lunch of just a plate of that and the mango lassi to drink. The North Indian thali was like a buffet on a plate with what I'm pretty sure was a samosa and some rice and some other "bases" and then a bunch of yummy things to put on top. I have a hard time writing a review without really knowing what I was actually eating, but it was all delicious. I'm a wimp with spices and it wasn't too hot. There was WAY too much for me to eat (the meal I ordered would be perfect split among 2 people), but they were great with giving me to go boxes and lids so I can savor my meal again tomorrow. So, was looking for some good Indian food close to the south entrance to DFW, and found this. Now, need to caveat this... it's NOT fancy at all. We're talking bare tables and plastic utensils. HOWEVER, that being said... The food is fantastic. VERY legit. If you're not Indian (or VERY familiar with Indian food), it'll be a hard for ya. My go-to casual restaurant when we want to eat vegetarian Indian food, are super hungry, and don't have time to search new places. Must have been there some 20 times since last year, so you can imagine it really IS the go-to. Have tried Chaat, North Indian, Thali, South Indian, almost everything here. Didn't like the Chhole Bhature and Mirchi ka Salan, please don't buy those until they improve both. The sabjis/curries and parathas are okay. Sabudana Khichdi is nice. Thali is quite filling. Vada Pav is amazing. But ever since last few months after I discovered their best-tasting dish, that's the ONLY thing I've been having there: Bombay Masala Dosa. Not your usual mere potato-onion filling - there's more in it. Soft dosa with spicy filling - I love it. And to have it with their unlimited sambar & chutneys. Couldn't get better. Try it. Why the one star review? Styrofoam. All their food is served on it and its disgusting. I even ordered a second chai and brought my cup up to reuse it. The lady gave me a new cup instead. There's no reason why a place like this that is constantly packed, can't afford to hire a dish washer and buy some plates. As good as the food is, I'll never be coming back. Let me now say that this place has great Indian food. I live in Jackson Heights, Queens, a neighborhood with great Indian Restaurants and have traveled to India on several occasions. I know my stuff. Their sambar is great. But none of these places use styrofoam. My suggestion? Call in every few weeks and ask if they're still serving on styrofoam. Best Indian fast food this side of the Atlantic! Okay - I haven't tried them all, but enough to know that this was a truly satisfying Indian meal I've had in US! For those of you who don't know Indian food - there's 2 (very) broad categories: north and south. Dosas, idly, vada, uttapam fall into South and the rest into North (sort of). I've only been here once and tried their South Indian and that was amazing! Rava Onion Dosa: extra spicy, extra crispy, extra delicious! yes, it's greasy but honestly, unless you make these at home you can't expect them to be healthy-ish. Their chutney & sambar counter (read: condiments) was pretty good as well. Lots of choices of chutneys and the sambar was decent too. Manchurian Dosa: first of all this one took me by surprise. it was HUGE! but despite the stuffing it was crispy just like i ordered it and the manchurian stuffing was good. Filter Coffee: this is the only thing on my order than tanked - it wasn't what you expect at the end of such a great run. totally avoidable! Dahi-Puri Chaat: (north Indian) again, it was amazing! fresh, and crispy. I can't wait to go back and try the other stuff on their chaat menu. I am very new to Indian food and now having been here I am a huge fan. I would have been lost on what to order had it not been for fellow yelpers. I can't remember the names of the foods I ate but it was delicious. The only item that did not fit my taste buds were the yogurt based dishes, everything else was awesome. It was exciting and refreshing change of pace. The place was packed with customers which is an obvious sign that the food is great. I guess this place has set the bar for future Indian restaurant places I try. This is a truly excellent Indian chaat house. It is all vegetarian, tasty, cheap and fun. Chaat is basically Indian street food or snacks. This place serves chaat from across the India. Taj is famous for their dosas. Try the Rava Paneer Dosa. It is amazing. With the dosas, you get all you can eat/drink sambar and couple of types of chutneys. The pani puri and bhel is also very good. Love it! I've been going ever since it opened. Big advantage for me I only live a couple of miles away. We went on a Saturday evening - and had an onion dosa and an eggplant roti. Sugar cane/ginger drink. Whole thing was $18.00 Delicious, fresh, hot (spicy as appropriate), nice sambal, lentil soup OK... Very good experience - somewhat complicated in the ordering process but it made me feel that I was back in India. We have used them to cater meals at home too. I eat here about once a week and I'm South Indian, so I know good food when I see it and this place has really good South Indian food... and completely Vegetarian. the "Set Dosa", "Adai", "Alloo Paratha and Paneer masala" are my usual eats here. Try out the fresh sugarcane juice.. with or without the ginger and lime. The Thali.. a meal with multiple side dishes and rice and bread is very good and my wife loves it while eating and hates it for how stuffed she feels on our way home. They have a strange system of ordering food. They have multiple stations offering specific foods, with each station having a slip of paper with the list of foods. You just pick up one or more of the slips, indicate which food you want and the count and give it to the lady who gives you back a pager. When the pager beeps, you go pick up your food. The staff was very helpful with steering me toward what I liked. Spinach? With cheese? Chunky or smooth? Take the forms up to the counter, hand them over, you get a pager. Go find a spot at a table, you might be sharing your table with others. When the pager goes off, go claim your meal. We decided to go eat in Irving last night on Sunday. We were looking for something light and easy like Chaat so we found out about Taj Chaat House and decided to go there. When we walked in the door, the place was packed with people. It felt like you were in a little Indian bazaar shopping for snacks. I was told that usually this place is not that busy so last night might have been an exception. The place is setup cafeteria style where you order first and then find a seat. You are handed a pager which rings everytime your food is ready. Then you go and pick up the food and bring back to your table. Everything here is vegetarian and very tasty, and they can make it as spicy or mild as your taste buds can handle it. We ordered Pani Puri, Bhel Puri, and Onion Nan with Korma which were all really good. Our friends ordered Wada Pav which is a sandwich of some sort and a Spicy Mysoor Dosa which was huge and can easily be shared by two. They also have Fresh Sambar in the middle which is self serve. It goes really well with Idli's and Dosas. Given that their menu is huge and full of interesting choices, I highly recommend this place. It is not very expensive and feels like an adventure. If you go there when you are hungry you may end up wanting to order one of each from the menu but just can't since we all are limited to having only one stomach. This place is awesome! I live in CA, but whenever I'm in TX, I make sure to go to Taj for a meal. They have a very community-oriented feel, where you go to each counter to order (dosa counter, pani puri/bhel puri counter, drink counter, etc), and you get a paper slip at each counter. After you're done eating, you give your paper slips to the cashier and pay the bill. The food is great, and everything's reasonably priced (under $5/dish). I am obsessed with this place. As a non-Indian who was recently introduced to dahi puri and pani puri on a trip to Ahmedabad, I had to have more. Outside of my friend's mom's kitchen, more was hard to find--until now! This place DELIVERS! Definitely get the dahi puri, The pav bhaji was also amazing and comparable to the night market in Ahmedabad. Dosas are wonderful, but honestly with all the other good food here, I would skip the dosa myself. Others also recommended a couple of different places in Richardson (in the back of various grocery stores). I went to two: one, whose name I've forgotten, and the other one was in the back of "Taj Mahal Imports". Neither of these places had chaat that even remotely compares to the Chaat House! They fail where so many others fail: too much crap and too much sauce. The balance is totally off. On the other hand, the Chaat House has the balance of solid to liquid, crisp to soft just right. Plus, so fresh! I love it. Definitely a must visit every time I have to head over in that direction (ahh Irving, why couldn't you be closer!) Note: ordering/food pick up process is a bit disorienting and the ambience is certainly lacking, but eh. I do wish they would switch away from styrofoam though! My friend and I visited this place with some basic expectations , not recommended. Food taste is just average.

This place is pretty awesome. The food is great, the people who work there are pretty friendly and they have a soup and condiment bar that is very tasty. It may be a little confusing because at less you know your Authentic Indian food very well ordering is a bit of a challenge. The menu doesn't have descriptions of what the dishes are, and the food is so deliciously authentic and even as a big Indian food fan I had no idea what 90% of those dishes were, so ordering is a bit of an adventure. This place is fully vegetarian, so I just pick something at random and I know I will be pleasantly surprised with what I get, knowing with confidence it won't have any meat. If you are not very adventurous or if you are expecting your typical Khadai Paneer, Saag Paneer, Chala Masala etc this is not going to be good for you, the food is very different that your average Indian place, but in a great way. read more

Writing this review as I sit at a chaat restaurant in Ohio (Bombay Chaat) that just served me terrible chaat. Used to eat at Taj every time I visited my family in Texas. I miss it SO much. Only place to get pani puri that compares to the pani puri-wallahs of Mumbai. Gonna have to plan a visit to DFW soon. PLEASE open a location in Michigan!!!! read more

Good solid southern food. Not as great as I remember when I was here a few years ago but it's not bad.

Sure the place doesn't look all that nice, but if i've found out one thing from being on Yelp it's that the more "hole-in-the-wall" a place seems, the better food usually is. Taj Chaat House is my favorite place to get Indian snacks and samosa chaat. It is always busy and the food is always fresh. There is plenty of parking outside and usually the wait time is between 5 to 10 minutes before you can get your order ready. The prices are low but quality is quite good. I have not tried all the dishes that they have to offer but everything that I have tried so far was delicious. read more

Food was tasty and filling. Would recommend to eat the thali at the restaurant and not take to go. All of their Chaats are really good too! Quite a lot of food comes w each order, so you can get multiple items and share. read more
