Best dinner buffet line up that I've seen in a while. Lots of meat and vegetarian options.

The food is fine, but no better than anyone else's. It was the staff and service and complete refusal to fix their problem that made me upset, and the reason I will never, EVER get food here again. There are plenty of Inidan places in town whose food is at least as good and the staff doesn't have their neck lodged in their rectum. We ordered through UberEats- when you've got two kids and are looking for something quick and easy, delivery is literally a lifesaver. We got a few entrees for ourselves and some kulcha for the kids. Knock on the door 30 min later, dinner is served. For us, but not the kids- no kulcha. I called the Taj and let them know they didn't send my kids' dinner. They told me since I ordered through UberEats, they couldn't do anything but get me some kulcha next time. Nothing they can do for me, I'm SOL. Really? I've got cranky, hungry kids, and you're gonna fix it next time? If I were the manager on the other end of the phone, I would have whipped up some kulcha and hired an Uber to deliver it. Nothing- they refused to fix the problem. Then I get attitude from the girl on the phone saying it wasn't her fault- it was the cook's. I don't care whose fault it is, I care about getting my kids fed. Argue amongst yourselves who screwed up after I'm off the phone, but talk to me about how you're gonna get it fixed. I contacted UberEats, and they fixed it- had the driver swing down and pick up the kids dinner. I asked the driver if he received any compensation for the second trip, and he didn't, so I tipped him. Not only did I have to contact UberEats to get the problem fixed, I had to pay to fix the restaurant's mess up. Like I said- plenty of choices in town, pick somewhere that cares enough to take care of you when they screw up. read more

Really amazing restaurant!! The food is so good, absolutely one of my favorite Indian restaurants in Boulder! I can never get enough of the samosas either! It's always good finding a restaurant that serves good food without requiring you to break bank! The service is great and there's a warm family feel here! We've always had good food there, but last time we were there, a waiter told me what I was eating was gluten free, but I do not believe it was, as I got a terrible belly ache. I tried to email twice and Facebook message them once to ask for a free meal or compensation, but nobody has responded to me. Maybe they will respond now? My advice is not to eat there if you have a problem with gluten, because not all of the staff will tell you the right thing. I ordered malai kofta and veggie pakora. After eating at the Taj, the Tandoori Grill, Namaste Nepal, Himalayas, Sherpa's, and Bombay Bistro, I've made my decision that the Taj is, overall, the best. No, I haven't been to every Indian/Nepalese restaurant in Boulder (just the ones above), and no, the Taj does not do every dish better than the rest of these restaurants. Namaste has the best saag, Himalayas has great naan, etc... but if you want a consistently tasty spread of dishes, none of which will disappoint, and for a really low price at lunch, the Taj is the way to go. Their lunch buffet is $9.99, 7 days a week, and it's a great deal. (I wouldn't do dinner - it's a good deal more, although I don't remember how much more - and the food isn't appreciably different.) There's a variety of vegetarian and meat dishes, none of which will wow you (except perhaps the honey chicken, has a satisfying crunch that veritably explodes with sweet honey), but all of which will satisfy. Make sure to make a run for the chicken tikka right as it comes out of the oven - it will change the dish from merely good to melt-in-your-mouth exploding-flavor charred perfection. Also have plenty of naan on hand to mop up your saag. Beware the vegetable korma as it has all the addictiveness of a bag of MSG-laced chips. The service is spotty here - I've been left sitting with my check and credit card ready for longer than a half hour, and sometimes you have to make other excuses for a server to come to your table before your water gets refilled. But hey - it's a buffet, what do you expect? Oh, and leave room for the rice pudding! Trust this! read more

I love the Taj. When I was younger and I lived in Estes Park, I came here a lot, since my parents were always trying to find intellectual and ethnic fun. We'd come in later in the evening when it was cold and dark outside - I'd have a bowl of soup, my brother would draw on the paper-covered tables, and my parents would chat with Kamala, the owner. Such are the cozy memories of childhood. To me, the Taj is still cozy. Today was the second time I've taken E (it's where he had his first Indian food - yay!) and I must say he is a big fan. I, of course, have always been one. I love their lunch buffet; at about $9 a person, with tons of options to choose from, it's definitely worth the money. E and I stuffed ourselves full of basmati rice, lentils, naan, curry chicken, samosas, pakoras, and the best rice pudding around and left very happy...and kind of uncomfortable from all the food! The restaurant is perched up on the second floor with pretty good seating and a full bar, stocked with lots of things I did recognize and a few intriguing bottle that I did not. I'll take a closer look next time. Their chai is delicious - it's the traditional earthy drink that isn't complete sugar overload. And I love their rice pudding - I think they put rose water into it? I had two bowls....such a pig! And I love the treats they have for you to sample as you're going out the door - fennel seeds and rock sugar to cleanse your breath. So very cool! While the location is admittedly awkwardly situated above a Trek bicycle shop in the Bellmar shopping center, which is a little difficult to get to if you aren't travelling north on Broadway or east on Baseline, it's beyond worth dealing with driving in Boulder. I have been there several times, on dates and with my family on special occasions - each time we've gone the buffet route, and I have never been disappointed. The price is what one might expect for a buffet, and is more than reasonable when you consider just how flavorful their food is. I have been searching for a good Indian buffet since moving to Colorado, and this is it. While they are a little slow with getting drink orders in, such as chai teas and mango lassies, they are always very attentive to water glasses and empty plates. Last note? The best vegetable korma and rice pudding I have ever had. If you are passionate about flavorful food, you should visit The Taj. read more

This is my second visit. I had dine-in dinner buffet a few weeks back and yesterday I had lunch buffet to-go. Let me say the only reason they don't get 5 stars is because the to-go container is plastic and burns your hands with the hot food and when they run out of food it takes them awhile to replenish. The food is actually great. Such a variety of dishes to choose from. I LOVE their naan. I can't even describe the great taste ( I want some right now). Their Kheer (rice pudding) is actually pretty decent as well. The chicken Tikka and grilled onions are good. Potatoes Aloo are good, but the potatoes are cut in such a large manner they don't soak in the flavor well. But seriously, if you are near and like Indian stop in. If you like it hot you may be disappointed since the buffet is not hot at all, but still very tasty. read more

First off, I realize my opinion is probably not shared by many. And that is precisely why I'm writing it. The Taj is one of the most popular Indian restaurants in Boulder (it's often the top pick for Indian in Daily Camera's annual "Boulder Gold" issue). That does not mean it's the best...it simply means the average person likes it more than the other options. So indeed, if you are like the average person, you will probably like this restaurant quite a bit. However... I've eaten here several times over the last several years, and the results are always the same no matter the dish: relatively bland and uninspiring. And of course, avoid the buffet unless you are relatively unfamiliar with Indian food and prefer the spicing level to be on the mild side...buffets at Indian restaurants are good only to get an idea of the different dishes they make, and always makes me feel like cattle at a trough. Order it from the menu and get it spiced the way you want it. Just remember extra heat can only do so much to a base recipe that is on the bland side...it will help, but it's not going to make it a winner. But let's face it, compared to other cuisines, even bad Indian food is pretty good, so in a pinch this place will certainly suffice (there's only a few I've tried that are virtually inedible...the one by the Colony 12 theater in Superior comes to mind). But if you want more herbs, more spices, more intrigue, and just overall better cooking, go to Tandoori Grill or Royal Peacock. read more

The dinner buffet is a huge spread. My only criticism is that most of the dishes were not labeled and I had to keep trying to get the servers to tell me what a dish was. I am a vegetarian so did not want to be eating chicken accidently thinking it was tofu or something else. It was hard to decipher what was animal and what was not. Seems like a simple thing to remedy. I did appreciate that they offered both a dairy and non dairy Saag. I also would have liked to see tofu in some of the dishes but it was nowhere to be found. I'm going to keep this simple because I'm currently noshing on their samosas and don't want them to get cold. Buy the samosas. They are mind blowing and come with great sauce. The buffet is fantastic if you're cheap like I am. The entrées are seasoned perfectly. The owner and staff and so kind and always give me free food. Just go here... I LOVE this place ... the food is spectacular. With all the Indian/Nepalese options in Boulder County, I think The Taj stands out as the best. Some highlights: lamb korma, chicken curry, saag paneer, garlic naan, date naan, samosas, mango custard, chai. Oh, and the CARROT PUDDING. My my my. I never knew this was even a thing and now it's a craving. The view is spectacular ... one of the best restaurant views in Boulder, making it a great place to take someone from out of town. Everyone working there is very friendly, and the owners, Kamala and Vim, are especially wonderful. They make you feel like you're a friend having dinner in their home. I've been to the Taj many a time in my day. It was a staple when I was in college at CU Boulder. Best indian buffet in town. (This review will only focus on my most recent experience). Needless to say though - I'm a big fan of this place, generally. We arrived yesterday just after 3pm and the host was quick to let us know that usually their buffet closes at 2:30p but there was still plenty of food so we could check it out and see if the buffet was the way we wanted to go. He said he would keep it open until 3:30p for us. NICE! They had all of my favorites: I'm not sure what they're called but I LOVE the Taj's fried potato triangles, their honey chicken is amazing, chicken tikka masala - YUM - spicy chili chicken, chicken tandoori, their saag is amazing, their fresh steamed veggies are always very good...they only thing they were out of was naan. WHAT?! Not to worry - they made some fresh naan for us and brought it straight over to our table. I mean. SERVICE! I prefer to go when everything is a bit more fresh than it was yesterday...but that's not their fault. It was nice that he offered to keep the buffet open longer for us AND he delivered fresh naan. Just downgraded Taj to three stars after having an exceptional meal at Tandoori Grill last night. Mulligatawny, onion kulcha and tandoori chicken. Unreal. Taj gets three stars for Boulder because the competition, while decent, is pretty inconsistent. What I've noticed about the Taj over the years is that they are solid and reliable, if somewhat ho-hum around the edges. I've only ordered off the menu once or twice in 15 years. The buffet rocks and you know you ain't going hungry in this motherfucker. The other Indian joints in town are mostly fine - just a slightly paler shade of pale than the Taj. By the way, Taj is owned by Nepalis, as is (obviously) the Himalayan. Not sure about the others in town that are saying "Indian," other than that ol' battleaxe the Royal Peacock out on Arapaho and 55th, which is a crapshoot these days but sometimes repays your low risk-aversion handsomely. Anyway, Boulder is apparently a destination for Nepalis. As is Nederland, where for a mere investment of 25 minutes of driving up the beautiful Boulder Canyon, you can indulge in some real deal Nepali home cooking at Kathmandu. The food there is... I don't know. Everything just tastes incredible there, like you're in someone's house. The owner bussing tables with his baby on his back in a carrier lent a lot of charm to the place as well (spoiler: the baby got big enough to walk so no carrier shows any more). A while back there was this great southern Indian restaurant at 18th and Pearl that is now part of Full Cycle. Man, THAT was the shit. TOTALLY different food than what you get at the usual Indian restaurants. Masala, a vegetarian southern Indian place on the Hill, has apparently also left for more lucrative turf. Bummer. If you ever get a chance, eat some southern Indian food - it'll blow your mind!! read more

I went here with a friend who was three sheets to the wind. Not because he was drunk but because he just had laser surgery on his eyes and was doped up. He was hungry and thought of Indian food which brought us here. It was during lunch time and we had a great buffet. My friend could have enjoyed himself more but after all he did just get out of surgery. This is hard review to write. Very awkward dining experience, but our meal ended up comped which we appreciated and felt was appropriate. The food on the lunch buffet was very tasty and they had a nice selection for a vegan. The server we had was rather rude. We were sat at the end of their lunch at 2:30 for the buffet and he tried to rush us through our lunch. We would have preferred to know the lunch was ending and we would have gone somewhere else, but instead he sat us and we felt rushed the entire time. When we informed the manager, she yelled across the restaurant chiding the server for his treatment which made us feel even more uncomfortable. I don't even know if I like Indian food, but I can absolutely tell you that I do really enjoy the Taj lunch buffet. Its affordable, the staff is friendly, and of course, very filling for the price. They offer a variety of foods during the buffet, including honey chicken, steamed vegetables, rice pudding, 3 varieties of rice, naan, salad bar, and of course curry. The Taj is a great example of an authentic Indian restaurant that still offers the awesome variety and convenience of a buffet. The owners of the restaurant, Vim and Kamala, are wonderful and kind people who truly care about providing quality food in the style of their home country and surrounding areas. I've made quite a few trips, as a Longmont resident, out of my way to include a meal here. Hands down, some of the best in Boulder! Great authentic food, served with love from the owners and family who seem to always be on site taking care of both regulars and new clients.
