Located in FiDi, the name attracted me. It's very easy to find when you're staying across the street at the Residence Inn. I ordered the carne asada and I did not expect it to look like it was flattened before grilling. I think the price didnt meet the expectation. Of course, each place has their own rendition of dishes, but this was not what anyone would expect for a carne asada entree. The service was good, nothing over the top and nothing underwhelming. I will say that I would probably stop by for a quick drink because the vibes were right. Cute Mexican theme with smaller tables for chill vibes and small conversations. I saw this place walking back to my car. It looked cute inside but I asked for outside seating so not sure about the size inside. The host was quick to seat and provide a menu. Everyone was very friendly. I went for lunch and it was slow service so might not be good if you're on a short schedule. I ordered enchiladas and you can mix and match. I got a spinach/mushroom and a chicken. It came with rice and beans. The spinach was fresh and not frozen. It was packed with it - a tortilla wrapped around sautéed spinach. I didn't get many mushrooms. Maybe two and they were canned. I almost forgot it was supposed to have them. The chicken was shredded, flavorful, and filling. Not dry at all. My confusion about the dish was the thick cheese on top. Was it mozzarella? Which would be weird. The menu doesn't say. I don't know! I couldn't tell!! The enchilada filling was just the meat or veggies. I didn't like the thick cheese. It made the tortillas really soggy. The green salsa was great but there wasn't much. I loved that they used corn tortillas. They clearly put the dish under a broiler since the plate was extremely hot. And the rice got dry and crispy. It actually was pretty good considering I'm not a rice fan. It almost seemed tomato based. I enjoyed the beans. Not sure if they were homemade though. The portion size was perfect for lunch. Mexican is not one of my favorite genres, and it's primarily because the combo of my texture-based palate and the crunchy shizzle that hangs out in a lot of the food isn't an ideal fit. If I like a Mexican place, it's usually because it's very, very simple/no frills, and that's Tajin in a nutshell. I came here with my Skipper for lunch on Friday, which was a miserable rainy day, the kind where you're venturing out MAYBE one or two blocks from the office. The walk from the office took approximately three minutes, and we were able to get inside with minimal dampness. I don't think it would be fair to call Tajin a dive; (the Skipper might disagree based on her recounting of a horrendous bathroom visit) but it's a pretty basic interior, with some sugar skull-esque art on the wall, and almost a diner vibe when it came to some of the tables/seating. We sat towards the back, which had a view of the bar area where the waitstaff lingered, making it very easy to get someone's attention for a drink, the check, etc. This might not be a selling point for a ton of people, but I was THRILLED to look over, say, the quesadilla section of the menu and see two or three ingredients per item. You start to lose me at a certain point when the items are covered in peppers, onions, etc., so when I saw that the chicken quesadilla contained nothing but chicken and cheese, I didn't hesitate. The quesadilla showed up within a few minutes, and hit the spot. As you can see from the attached, it came with a small pile of guac on the top, which I spread around the top. The guac was a LITTLE crunchy for my taste, but was relatively smooth. Definitely some solid comfort food on a day where I barely remembered what the sun looked like. I also ordered a few passion fruit margaritas; the Skipper is far more educated about these matters and recommended I get the tajin rim (I of course obliviously went into this place not knowing what Tajin meant) which jived perfectly with the drink - nice little nip to go with the sweet. I'm pretty ambivalent about margs, having had a ton of bad ones that practically sent me into insulin shock, so it's always a pleasant surprise when someone mixes them properly and you don't end up crashing later. It was light and tasty, and I'd absolutely get it again. This is probably two or three blocks from a pretty hardcore touristy area, but it certainly gets some of that foot traffic. As a result, they could definitely charge more for the food/drinks but I thought it was very reasonable for the neighborhood. The Skipper had a glass of wine that was $9, the margs were $12, and my quesadilla was around $13, I believe. Given that there are nearby restaurants that unhesitatingly offer $40/$50 entrees, you could do a lot worse to your wallet if you wanted to. We're adding this one to the list for future visits. Come to Tajin Mexican Restauran, it's a little Gem hidden on Greenwich Street in FiDi. My best friend and I are regulars. This little gem is close to the 9/11 memorial which was perfect for my walk on foot. When I was entering I was greeted promptly with a friendly face and ushered quickly in. The place is small but very bright and colourful. The tables all have a hot sauce on them for easy access to spice to the dish! The food is good and it's a big portion. Got takeout from here for lunch and it was the worst Mexican food I've ever had. I ordered a beef burrito bowl and it was the soggiest meal ever. The rice was wet. There was so much lettuce, cheese and sour cream, which made the whole bowl mushy. The beef had no flavor and it was tough. Cute little place! I'd give it 3.5 stars. My friends and I often walk around New York. So when we feel like sitting down for a bite, we do a quick google search for local places. It keeps our taste buds open and ensures we don't eat at the same places every time. This restaurant isn't located on a busy street and it was kind of hidden/quiet which was perfect after our long day. The food was amazing, a bit pricey and the drinks weren't the best (I had a Piña Colada). I watched two other ladies walk up to the bar and complain about their drinks so I didn't feel too bad about not liking mine. Of course, being the Yelper I am I was very skeptical of how our experience would be given the low reviews. We arrived around 6pm on a Wednesday evening and it was a complete graveyard. The 2-star rating is because our server had no personality and appeared to be disgruntled because he had to work. A very affordable Mexican spot in FiDi, Tajin warmly welcomed our party of 6 yesterday for dinner on a Thursday after work. I liked several things about this experience. The service was attentive and polite. The beers were not expensive - $5 or $6 each. The appetizers were fun - we had chicken flautas, a beef tostada and a chicken tostada. Most of the table liked their food. I asked if the chile rallenos were deep fried and the waiter said they were not. When I got them, they were not, indeed, deep fried BUT were covered with a soggy breading I didn't enjoy. The cheese was not melted. But I probably ordered the wrong thing because I tried other people's food and I liked it. Pete and his mom got combo fajitas - chicken, steak and shrimp. The portion was huge. Was still hot and fresh when I got home. Ordered the enchilada platter (cheese), served with rice and beans. I came here a few years ago when they were only a one floor spot. Now they have grown to a two floor location that sits many more people. Good lunch options and also large plates for an affordable price in the downtown area. We shared a Chimichanga and enchiladas. One of fried and second is baked. The flavors are really good and everything comes out tasting very nice. The rice is probably the best rice I have had in a restaurant. Both of our dishes had a descent amount of steak and chicken. NotHing is spicy as what I am used to with Mexican cuisine around other places but They have hot sauce you can put on it. My co-workers wanted to take me out to lunch and we decided that this would be a good spot for some classic Mexican dishes. We hadn't made a reservation but on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving they weren't busy at all when we walked in. They seated us inside after taking our temperatures and making sure that we were all wearing masks. They separated us from the only other party that was there by seating us at the completely other end of the restaurant (which was extremely appreciated). They gave us our menu's and allowed us time to look over them. When it came time to order I ended up going with the California burrito with ground beef ($12.95).
