I have been going to Tajin for a few years now. It has always been good solid Mexican food. It's a great mom and pop place. Try the enchiladas, nachos (not your average nachos, they are 6-8 large triangle chips with beans and cheese on them), tacos, carne asada! Lunch time the service does slow down on some days like today they forget about you as well, but I don't mind it here as they don't rush you. Definitely a must try if you are in the area!!! We were looking for a quick and casual place to chill while waiting to go up the WTC observatory and found this cute little place. It has an indoor-outdoor setting which was nice in an area that is perpetually shaded due to tall buildings. In any case, we tried the horchata, tamarind water, guacamole and chips, and fish tacos. Everything was pretty good. Both drinks were on par. The guacamole could have been larger portions. The chips were nice and crispy though so after we were through with the guac, I just nibbled on those chips to satisfy the fat craving. The fish tacos were standard. Comes with beans and rice. Oh. I forgot to mention that we got the flan. Don't miss it. Really creamy with a firm texture. read more

I read about this place in a downtown lunch blog. So, naturally, it was hyped up for me from the start. It made it really hard for me to be open minded because it was oversold from the start. My colleagues and I decided to place an order for delivery. Because we are in chinatown, we had to have a minimum of $30 to order. It wasnt a problem, these kids love them some burritos. We placed our order. $45 worth of burritos. Thats a lot of burritos. we waited. and waited. and waited. Apparently, the delivery guy got lost. I gave him the cross streets and he told me he was in the lobby. I went down there. he was not. I waited. And when lunch was over, he arrived. with cold burritos. and some of them were not made the way we asked. So, next time we crave burritos, we might have to take our butts to the new chipotle a few blocks away. Sad. read more

Fantastic place. Ordered delivery! Arrived fairly quickly. Was fresh and hot. And more delicious then expecting. Honestly i wasn't expecting much, but was very impressed with the food. We enjoyed. Rice and beans - basic, and hard to get wrong in fairness. Beef burrito- great flavor, perfect spice level, and lovely ratio of filling. Cheese quesadilla - again not hard to get wrong, but the guacamole on top was really fresh and good texture. Would recommend and definitely will order again. read more

It is pronounced TAHEEN. It's a spice blend with chili and lime Lol. That being said, the food is delicious and plentiful, it's just kind of expensive, we have all had fantastic Mexican food for at least 25% less, but it's the area; a grilled cheese at George's, next door is $10.00! Also the seating is always taken up inside, every time I've eaten here it's always al fresco. They are good with splitting the bill on however many credit cards though which is a great plus; even in this world of Zelle, PayPal and Venmo people still want to "split the bill." A little tiny but they had some very quick service; guess the waiter took it to heart when I said I was in a rush b/c of being on my lunch break. Great place to go if you're on your lunch break; I still had time to grab an italian ice & visit with my husband before going back to work. Not the cheapest & I can't fully assess the menu unless I ate dinner here but for this area, it's pretty darn good. The chicken burrito I had was quite filling. Good luck getting a table for lunch, it's packed. Literally was not room for all of our group to stand inside. I ordered the fish tacos and rather enjoyed it. The fish is grilled and despite looking dry, is not. It also comes with avocado. Most entrees come with a massive heap of rice and beans on the side. Having had rice and beans at many ok Mexican restaurants, these exceeded low expectations. Usually, the rice is pretty dry, this one was covered in an oily sheen. Despite its humble appearance on the outside and it's middle of nowhere location, Tajin is a diamond in the rough on the western fringe of FiDi. Tajin is a great place to look for good Mexican food in Lower Manhattan that's not cooked up by Chipolte. I normally go there to take out and get the California Burrito. It's about 3/4 the size of a regular Chipolte burrito and tastes pretty darn good. It is a bit on the dry side and isn't completely stuffed like a Chipolte burrito but that might be a good thing if you're not looking to bust your gut. Service times for take out varied. Before 12:30, you can be out the door in less than 10 minutes but after 1, you might have to wait up to 15 minutes to get your food. Despite this, this is a really good place if you want a alternative to the generic Mexican fare offered at Chipolte. read more

I have had better Mexican food for less. The three stars are for the Azteca soup. The chips should have been complimentary with salsa. Guess other restaurants have spoiled me in that sense. My husband and I were visiting from Texas. We walked around and saw Tajin Mexican Restaurant open. The place looked clean and welcoming, so we gave it a shot. The service was outstanding! We had lunch and drinks. The margaritas were well made refreshing. Our lunch (flautas with rice beans, Mole Enchiladas) was so delicious and tasted freshly made. For my first experience...... The service was not so bad but they were not very busy at the time and it took a while for them to refill my water glass as a few employees seen an empty glass. I order the chicken quesadillas which were very bland even with the guacamole on top. I have been working in the city for only 6 months and this place is maybe a block away so I finally gave it a try because I have heard great things and also I like to try things for myself. I'm not going to say its the best Mexican food but it wasn't bad. For starters we had the guac and salsa with chips. The guac lacked the kick that I'm used to and was a little too smooth in texture for my liking. The texture was more comparable to a spread. The salsa tasted right out of a Tostitos jar, so you can just imagine how lackluster it was. However, we were able to jazz it up with some of the green hot sauce on the table along with salt and pepper. As for the chips, salty! Luckily the starters did not foreshadow the entrees. I had the mahi mahi fish tacos which comes with 2 stuffed tacos, yellow rice, and black beans. I really enjoyed the black beans and rice and the fish was cooked very well. The only problem was that the pico de gallo is given as a side so I had to continuously add it to the taco with every bite since the taco itself is wrapped tight in parchment paper. The establishment overall is priced a little high for the quality of food that is being served. If you do plan on going keep in mind that it is tight during lunch hours and the staff, while friendly, were a little forgetful when we asked for additions to our meals. TL; DR: Based on a large catering order (so I cannot attest to individual delivery or dine in), 2.5, which I'd really like to round up, since they seem like nice folk...and we do have a couple people who swear by them as their go-to Mexican option in the area. But, for my liking and the majority of the people I polled, rounding down due to execution and price (caveat: I'm used to some of the best - though still most affordable - Mexican food throughout Queens. Even so, and with skewing my expectations on flavor and price for the area, still really left wanting). Whole shebang: Ordered catering for the office. Props that the kitchen flagged the guac order as being the wrong size for our office, and called us back (and were right in their estimate of how much we'd need). Order arrived on time, everything accounted for. I understand why they packaged everything differently for such a large order (typical order would come with entree separate from the sides). But using aluminum containers with plastic lids (a la every hot/cold bar in the city) it made for a presentation that didn't match the price tag. As we laid out the food, it was nice to see that they portioned generously to match the price tag (this included the weight of the salmon fillets). The guac was very silky and flavorful, approved by even our most particular Cali implants. However, the salmon looked way overcooked at first glance (those who ordered confirmed it was). Some enchiladas were dry. My mole chicken enchiladas had small bones throughout both pieces. I had to add a bunch of hot sauce to the rice and beans to bring out flavor. One person asked for a side salad to replace the beans. She was given steamed vegetables instead (mind you, a very hearty amount...). And most folks I poled? "...it was fine..." If I were in the area, I may pop in to try them, as they may not be accustomed to such large orders and that may have factored into the overcooking, under seasoning, and substitution confusions. If that goes well, I might try them again for the office. But, right now, not sold. read more

Probably the worst Mexican food I've ever had. I got the Spinach and Mushroom Enchiladas, which was essentially just unseasoned spinach in a tortilla with bland sauce. Tajin Mexican Restaurant is a small restaurant near Wall street. We had just seen the Jewish Heritage Museum at Battery Park nearby and were famished. They have a few tables outside and since the weather was sunny though a bit nippy, we decided to sit outside. Service was good and food was served piping hot. We ordered some beer, chips and salsa. We went on a Sunday for lunch. The best thing about the experience were the entrees. Food was definitely good, especially for NYC Mexican (we got a chimichanga and two burritos). Service was just okay, not too attentive and they waited 7 minutes after giving us our check to tell us that we had to pay at the bar. My biggest gripe is the chips and salsa. In my opinion, chips and salsa should always be complimentary, but that can be hard to find in NYC. We decided to pay the $4.50 for the chips and salsa just to try it (that's already expensive for chips and salsa). It was pretty good, but we eventually asked for more chips because the basket was small. The waiter smiled and said "sure" without hesitation. When we got the check we were shocked to see that we were charged an extra **$3.95** for chips!! To pay almost $9 for chips and salsa (no guacamole) is outrageous. I will probably not go back because of this. Also they don't have a full bar, just beer, but they might be waiting for their liquor license. read more

Recently renovated - and wow it looks amazing!! Our old FiDi Mexican spot has really upgraded themselves. They now have 2 floors of seating inside and an outside patio. The food is delicious and fresh. I had spinach enchiladas and they were filled with FRESH (not frozen) spinach and topped with gooey cheese. The rice and beans on the side were a tasty addition. My boyfriend had the steak ranchero, which was spicy, delicious, and juicy. Come and give it a chance and you will not be disappointed! read more

Cockroaches! This place is disgusting. Went in there this past Tuesday and saw two cockroaches running around. Sadly we had already ordered my food (chicken enchiladas) -and they were terrible. The steak was very chewy and had a lot of cartilage in it. The tortillas were soggy too. My friend got the steak fajitas and those were not and better. Steak was definitely a cheap cut just like the chicken and had no flavor. The only acceptable part of the food was the beans. Place is super dirty also - so no wonder there are cockroaches running around. People in the restaurant are rude too especially the old woman (I think shes the owners mom or grandma). Avoid this place at all costs. Normally I dont write reviews -and I have had my share of bad places to eat but this was so over the top that I had to warn others. I came with my son for a quick meal after a long day in the City. I ordered a margarita, definitely one of my least favorite I've ever had... didn't taste fresh, just heavy on whatever the mix/syrup is they use. Wouldn't order again. My son just had a water. Next came chips and salsa. The bowl of salsa was 1/3 full from a giant piece of tomato that wasn't chopped/mixed in, making the actual amount of salsa to be very small. Prior to our meal coming, my son had to ask for a refill of his empty water glass, which they did promptly get. The chicken fajitas were good, not served in what I would consider a traditional fajita style, sizzling on the platter, but tasty. My sons water say empty again for the last portion of our meal and nobody ever came back to check or notice that it was again empty. I asked for the check and waited easily another 15 min before asking if they could run my card because we wanted to get going. Service was definitely not good. And no, they were not busy at all!
