Taka is a Merrick sushi haven! This is one of those 'overdue reviews' since I've been coming here for years; it was last night's meal, though, that inspired me to type up their praises, once and for all, hehe. I am a sushi fanatic, and we shared the sushi and sashimi platter for two that was SUPER fresh and silky and smooth and honestly just what the doctor ordered, to say the very least. We were also able to choose two special rolls off their menu for this platter as well, and it was all so luxuriously lovely and accented by wasabi mayo for that extra special touch. Plus, I must shoutout their yellowtail sashimi in this platter! They paired it with delicate jalapeños, which was a treat since I know that can be a whole appetizer in and of itself. Speaking of appetizers, we also indulged in their tasty rock shrimp tempura (the shrimp was such good quality, and it's hard to go wrong with spicy mayo) and their special Taka roll that featured salmon, spicy tuna, avocado, and lobster salad... and it was topped with jalapeño for the most PERFECT bite. Our Favorite Spot! Me and my husband love this place -- we come here for everything! The sushi is always fresh and delicious, the Pad Thai is soooo amazing, and the gyoza are my absolute favorite. Always such a hit and absolutely love that they take my gluten allergy (celiac) very seriously! Although the restaurant was hard to find, once we got there, we had a great experience. Everything, down to the dressing on the salad, was delicious. I had the steak bento box with hot and sour soup and salad. So yummy. Apparently they have an excellent happy hour at the bar because the bar was packed so I will try that next time we go! If you ever went to taka before the pandemic, you know their happy hour was fire. They stopped it for a while but it's back. I was so excited, but it's not as good as it was. They took a lot of items off their menu and they also raised the prices by a lot. We sat at the bar and took a while to take our order. I will say once we did get the sushi it was very fresh and well presented. We got the Black Angel Roll, the twins, sex on the beach, and crunchy spicy tuna. For drinks we got he lychee martini and the zombie which were also very good. It's still worth it as I don't know many good sushi happy hours around these parts but I wish they had the old menu. They also got rid of bar tender Charlie and he was the best. read more

Came here for the first time was not impressed. Definitely don't get the merrick Mall roll unless you like soggy cabbage/lettuce in your roll. I think our waitress was on like speed or some thing she was running around dropping things off taking orders but never asking if there was anything else we needed or if we had any questions just running off ....at the end she came back and asked if we'd like dessert , we said yes, but she was so quick to run off. I guess she thought we wanted the check and brought the check. they kept turning the lights on higher and higher at 9:18. Meanwhile they close at 9:30 to get us out of there so when we left, we were chatting in the parking lot and noticed not only did they leave at 9:30 sharp but another couple walked out at the same time with them. How rude to not even allowed that last couple to walk out before them, I just think the owners are rude or whoever runs the restaurant on a Tuesday night is super rude and they have no manners in terms of allowing customers to take their time and finish eating when the restaurant closes at 9:30 not 9:18. They do not make You feel like they want customers . Meanwhile it was a hot night and you should be grateful people even want to eat here cause outdoor dining is where it's at . Then we noticed a bum sleeping right next to the restaurant... where were we ? Never encountered this in merrick. read more

My friends and I came here at 8:30 on a Friday night. We expected a wait and they told us 15-20 minutes. We ended up waiting for 1 hour just to get seated without anyone coming up to us and updating us with how much time it was going to be. Once they say us down, we did not get waited got until 25 minutes in and it was not even by a waiter but instead the host. Very, very disappointed and unprofessional for any establishment. I came here about a week ago on a Saturday for their Heartbreakers party (5pm-9pm) with a few…read morefriends and had a great time! Tickets (~$30/pp) were easy to purchase via their website and they email you the QR code which you can show at the door when you arrive. No need to print the ticket! I was surprised at how big the venue was inside because from the outside, it looked like a small spot. Apparently this spot has been around for awhile because when I mentioned the place to my stepfather in law, he knew about it from when he was younger! The place was also surprisingly very clean and tidy. Coat check was $3 cash and the line went relatively fast. I was really happy they did not misplace or lose my jacket at the end of the night (speaking from my clubbing days from "back in the day"). You get a physical ticket after handing them your jacket and they even tell you to take a picture of the ticket in case you lose it during the night. After getting my coat checked, there was a table with lit up flower headbands and lit up foam sticks. These were both a hit as almost everyone at the venue had one of each. I would say the age range went from those in their 30s up to women in their 50s. Everyone was respectful of each other which was great. The place was crowded but not so crowded that you couldn't move around or felt claustrophobic though at times, the venue did get kind of warm inside. I did not order any food but I think the VIP tables had that option. I also did not order any drinks because I do not drink alcohol. My friends that did drink seemed happy with what they got. There were multiple bars throughout the venue which was great as you didn't have to walk far to get a drink. I had no issues with any of the staff throughout my night. The bartenders were pleasant as well as the staff handling the coats, the bouncers and security. There were two bathrooms (men and women) and there was always a line for both. At this specific party it was females only so staff allowed us to use the mens bathroom. The DJ (DJ Mary Mac) was great and played a good variety of music throughout the night. There was even a portion of the night where January birthday party goers got up on the stage to celebrate their birthdays. Sound quality was great and even though this was a "day party", it really felt like we were partying at night like the good old clubbing days haha. The con is that parking is hard to find so arrive early before the party. It is located right next to the LIRR train station so I guess that's good for those that want to travel by train. A lot of areas around the venue was 1 hour parking until 6pm or 8pm which was annoying because the party I was going to started at 5pm. Overall, I would definitely return for other events! It seems from their website that they always have something going on!

The food was greasy, and tasteless. The shrimp and soup dumplings had that god awful refrigerator taste. After going a few times, the bad food and the unfriendly faces just stopped me from going back. Recently, I was out with friends who wanted to try Sakura. I was not thrilled but being a team player, I decided to go. I am happy to say that the food quality has improved. Most dishes were good, not as good as the last owners but hey they are getting there. There was a limit on sashimi (30) and a limit on desserts (1) but with all the other options, I don't need more. The atmosphere is still unfriendly but they are trying. The service has gotten better but don't expect a smile when they deliver your food. As for me, I was just happy to have solid food that came out hot and was tasty. I will definitely give Sakura another shot and hopefully they get better and better.

I tried Taka Merrick during my last trip to NY with my fiancé and we were both amazed! The place is fairly new and it has a very nice decor, as well as a welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff. Most important, it is also very clean. Food is really great (rolls are the best!), it is so hard to find a properly made sushi, but there they really know how to do it. I usually don't make pictures in restaurants, but I thought these were well worth it! Such a shame we don't live behind the corner, but we would definitely pop in again in our next trip! read more

I just love this place! I recently moved in New York and I went with some colleagues to celebrate payday :) I really like sushi, and this one is among my favorite ones!
