I first discovered Takara when I worked in Canton and later rediscovered it when I lived in Canton. Takara is great, I mean, really great. Especially for the 'burbs. Prices here are pretty reasonable and service is a little slow but not languid and always friendly. Plus, there's a packy across the street and then are BYOB. If you bring your own sake, they'll heat it for you and serve it properly but not charge you any extra for the service. Which leads me back to my original statement. Takara is great. read more

I went to Takara today for the 2nd time since they moved. I ordered the Bi bim bap and it was good. They made it gluten free for me and gave me GF soy sauce. My husband ordered the Sashimi Deluxe because they don't have the regular anymore. After my meal came out, it took them 15 minutes for my husband's sashimi to come out. Our waitress was rude to us when we asked. The restaurant was not busy at 7pm so there was no reason why it was late. I feel the staff are not as polite and attentive as they used to be and it was really disappointing as we have been long time customers. read more

We had a very nice business lunch at Takara. Came in at 11:30 when they opened and everything was fresh and delicious, and cooked just right. We had bento boxes which was plenty - a hearty portion. Service was attentive. I hope to return again the next time I am in Canton. read more

Why I won't go back: Unfortunately, no sushi is better than poor quality sushi Do NOT order: Unagi Tony's tip: Don't do takeout, b/c if you're disappointed, at least you can ask for a replacement item or a refund. As someone who works in the city, but lives in the burbs, I have been desperate for a convenient place I could pick up some fresh, creative sushi as a meal on my way home. Given Takara's reputation on Yelp, I was hopeful I had discovered such a place. But after two poor experiences, I'm still looking. I'll caveat my review by saying that I ordered takeout both times. I was early for my pick up. But, yes, I did have a 10 minute drive home. So, I acknowledge that the perceived freshness and the dining experience differs from eating in the restaurant itself. That said, I have done takeout before, and I just don't think that 10 minutes, or my kitchen table, accounts for the gap in quality. My litmus test for sushi places is always either the tuna or salmon sushi (not sashimi) and the unagi. My first clue that the sushi was not as fresh as the top places in Boston was the modest (vs. deep) red/orange coloring of the tuna/salmon. And both took an effort to chew, whereas I expect them to almost melt in my mouth. Same with the unagi - the coloring was a bit too pale and the flavor was not as rich as it has been in my favorite haunts (Douzo, Haru). And none of these pieces held their shape after a quick dip in soy sauce and a bite - something which I have come to expect. No need to beat them up any further on the rolls - they simply did not have the look and taste of something that had JUST been prepared. Even the aroma of what I have ordered was somewhat off-putting. The bottom line for me is that once you've had great sushi, you can't eat anything less. This isn't even close in my book. I'm going to trial some other local places and hope to come back to Yelp with a decent alternative to Takara. read more

Ok so I am now a Sushi connoisseur. I have got more and more adventurous and will I still have my staples I can say I have explored many of the dishes on this menu and I have visited many other sushi restaurants and I can with a great deal of confidence now say that there is no better place in terms of consistent quality at a great price. (To the level where they remember my husband likes double sauce with Hwe Dup Bap...which always makes him happy!) Upon walking into Takara my wife and I were impressed with its clean and nicely decorated atmosphere. We were helped by 2 servers - one was very friendly and outgoing, the other was nice, but quiet, serious, and to the point. We were amazed at how quickly our food came out and by the end of our meal, we felt a little rushed (although the restaurant was not crowded). We shared one of the sushi specials to start - a spicy salmon type of roll, which was delicious! My wife had some sushi rolls for dinner (Alaskan and Salmon), which were fresh and tasty. I had the Beef teriyaki, which was served sizzling hot and tender, but it was just OK. Overall, this is a very nice restaurant out in the suburbs and we did enjoy it, but it did not "wow" us. read more

We came in here just as they opened at 11:30am because Nisa's Thai food down the street was closed. It wasn't Thai food but it was awesome. We got a bento box lunch special and a rice bowl lunch special. The portions were just right and at a good price. This place is great! Have been here twice now and it's been delicious both times! The service is awesome, very friendly, they make you feel right at home! We love their Hamachi Kama! I have blessed with the opportunity to sample sushi from something like 50 sushi restaurants, and I keep going back to Takara probably on average once every other week. The 2 primary reasons is, consistent high quality, and the second is the service. My son forgot to mention that an ingredient needed to be excluded, and despite it being our fault, they accommodated us without extra charge. When in Japan many years ago, I may have had slightly better sushi, but never such fantastic service! read more

It was just ok. I went here by myself on a Saturday night. Had the miso soup, rainbow roll, and spider roll. The servers really seemed pretty cold to me. The way they asked questions and put food in front of me seemed very rushed. It seemed like they didn't want me eating there my myself taking up space. But maybe they were just having a off night. And perhaps I didn't get the correct things. All in all the meal was pretty bland as well. The miso already has subtle flavors but it just tasted really bland. The rainbow roll didn't pack as much flavor as I'd hope. I really needed to douse it in soy sauce to get any sort of flavor. The spider roll was ok as well. The texture of both rolls were great, just the flavors weren't working for me. Again I may have gone on an off night. I can see this place getting pretty good reviews and I had high hopes for it. This past weekend, I popped in here for an early dinner. I'd been here once before and I can say that this second visit solidified the place as "A-OK", for me. I went with a hot and sour soup and the triple delight maki (three rolls: tuna, salmon and yellowtail). The soup is more of a Thai style, so thinner and less one-note than the some of the hot and sour offerings elsewhere. Thumbs up on that. I don't recall the size of the maki trio the first time I went, but this time I thought the rolls were a bit small. Many of the reviews rave about the sushi, but I thought the fish was just alright. Definitely didn't blow me away. In their defense, I got the same thing both times, so maybe I'd have gotten a better second impression if I'd ordered a different meal..Either way, I'm giving them a solid 3-stars. When I'm up that way again, I'll likely go elsewhere, but I wouldn't have a problem trying more of Takara's menu read more

Takara can't be beat. The fish is very fresh, the service great and the prices are very reasonable. There aren't alot of sushi places that my wife, daughter and I can feel full and only spend $50-$60. The non-sushi fare is very good as well and they have a pretty broad menu which makes it a great place if you have some anti-sushi members of your party. It's a BYOB place but there's a liquor store diagonally across the street (next to Bank of Canton) that sells sushi friendly beverages so not to fear of you arrive and realize they don't serve alcohol. You're just a quick walk and a brown bag away away from Asahi, Sapporo or Plum Wine. If you like spicy I recommend the Hokkaiyaki appetizer. Cooked squid or scallop with tobiko in a spicy mayo kind of sauce. Hot, spicy and oh so delicious. Make sure you check out the specials board, you never know when they've come up with something new. Of course the fact that I can walk to it has probably jaded my opinion. We've been going to Takara since it was just Jackie and Jerry behind a tiny little counter in a place the size of my kitchen. From the first time we ate there we knew it'd be a hit and were praying it'd catch on so they'd stick around. When they moved two doors down and more than quadrupled the size of the place I was elated. I hope they never leave! Oh and if you have trouble finding street parking in Canton center (not likely but possible on rare occasion) just park in the Walgreen's lot across from the restaurant. Yeah there are signs that say "Walgreen's only" but the street side of the lot is empty most of the time and I don't know anyone who ever got a ticket or towed there. read more

Honestly, I've had sushi at other restaurants and I usually end up comparing it to Takara. Takara was probably my first really positive experience with sushi. Not only is Takara affordable when you compare them with other restaurants, but the food is very good. I think that the individual sushi pieces can be small, but the overall portion sizes are good and affordable, so that more than makes up for it. The staff is always nice and friendly and depite the restaurant being small and the tables being close together, it's a really comfortable atmosphere. The only drawback is that you'll have to find street parking as the Walgreens across the street is now towing from their lot. read more

Takara has great food and a terrific staff - I've never walked in without being greeted and seated immediately. It's not the fanciest place, which is fine; it's nice and comfortable, in a friendly sort of way, and not too expensive. They're open at all the right hours, including Christmas Day. I have lots of fond memories of eating there with friends and loved ones. There are two liquor stores a few steps away, so pick up a bottle of something to go with dinner first. When I moved recently, one of the deciding factors on the building I chose was that it's literally a 2 minute walk from Takara! read more

We were on a hunt for some Japanese food after a trip to IKEA, sadly this place did not satisfy our cravings. We got various Korean dishes, and the mother-in-law could barely finish any of the dishes, the kalbi in particular was very tough and also nothing like authentic kalbi. We got a few other "Japanese" appetizers, they were decent, but definitely could tell it was not prepared by a Japanese chef. Was in the area and decided to come here with two other coworkers on a Sunday evening. The restaurant was pretty empty and we promptly seated. Service was nice. I got the seafood ramen and it was solid. Not the best thing I've ever had, but pretty tasty and satisfied my ramen craving. The two other coworkers got the hibachi dishes. I thought it was kind of strange to have hibachi on the menu because they make it back in the kitchen and bring it out like a regular dish (without the theatrics). read more

Update on October 20, 2007: I've been to Takara on many occasions. Almost 2-3x a month and I've been noticing a slight decrease in sashimi portions every time. Of course, I'm thinking it must be my appetite but I'm sorry to report the days of large fish is over. The sashimi portions have decreased by almost 40% while their prices have increased by 20%. Not a great deal if you frequent Takara's. I've switched to Mai Place where their sashimi is much bigger with a great selection of rolls and other creative sashimi delights. ----------------------- Original review: Looks like I'm on a roll with the Asian delights in the burbs. I was on a mission to find a closer Japanese specific restaurant with good udon and sushi. I was able to find 1 out of 2 with Takara in Canton Center. Takara has been in Canton Center for the past 3 years. I just happen to find it the other day. It's much closer than Mai Place and will serve the purpose of a quick sushi fix. Takara is a mixture of Japanese and Korean serving doksul bi bim bab (hot stone pot) to udon. Their sushi is well prepared with nice slices of sushi. The staff is attentive and in fact I think a couple of them used to work in the city at Ginza or some of the other sushi joints. I was not too fond of their udon as the broth was too dark. Immediately I thought the broth would be salty but was pleasantly surprised that it was subtle in taste. But still served the purpose of providing a nice suburban retreat for Japanese. The doksul bi bim bab was not the best I've had compared to Koreana or the other restaurant (name escapes me) on Beacon St in Brookline. I like the sushi and have to go back for some of the other items on the menu. Another BONUS...BYOB! They do not have a liquor license so the alcohol is inexpensive. Just go to the liquor store across the street and help yourself to a nice sauvignon blanc or viognier with sushi. In the end, I am happy that I came across Takara. They might not be the BEST game compared to Boston, but very pleased when factoring drive time, convenience and overall selection. Thus the reason for 4 stars. I would give 3 stars at most if Takara was located in Boston. So I guess the old adage, "location location location" really plays a factor in the rating. read more

In other words I enjoyed this place, the sushi was awesome, and their menu featured a lot of things that I'll surely be back to try. Takara is an adorable, moderately sized sushi and other cuisine establishment situated in the heart of Canton. When I was out for work and had a hankering for some soosh, I found this online and when I saw the 'People on Yelp Love Us' sticker on the door, I believed I had found a diamond in the rough! The staff were ultra friendly, service prompt, and menu was fantastic. Anyone who offers white tuna gets to keep a little piece of my heart. Although I was the first one there for lunch, the space quickly filled with families and friends meeting for lunch. Clearly Takara is much loved in the neighborhood. I enjoyed my insideout maki, but thought the salmon could have been a little more fresh. The white tuna sashimi rocked my taste buds, but maybe it could have used a little more thawing time. The gyoza soup was a little too salty, but I can't complain much about dumplings in soup. All in all, it was a decent soosh hot spot and when I'm in Canton again, chances I'll go back are good. Oh ya, and you Cantonese (I mean Cantonites?) peeps have a great BYOB joint! read more

As a serious sushi snob it is pretty rare for me to have zero complaints about a restaurant but I guess there is always a first. I've been going to this place since I was in high school and any time I'm home visiting family I make sure to treat my dad to fresh sushi. The sushi basically tastes and smells like it was caught fresh that day and for those that don't like sushi there are a lot of authentic asian dishes to keep any picky eater happy(try the katsudon it's delicious!). Combine all that with an attentive, friendly wait staff and prices that confuse you solely because of how low they are(SURPRISE!) and Takara is a true winner. If they ever get their liquor license they will be a full fledged 5 but BYOB isn't too bad. If you love melt in your mouth sushi make sure to check out Takara instead of making the trek into Boston for the expensive alternative. read more

First thing first-- i am NOT a sushi lover. Hate all types of seafood. To me, what makes a Japanese restaurant good is their selection of other, non-seafood items. That being said-- Takara has something for everyone! When comparing it to some of the other Japanese restaurants in the area, Takara is waaay smaller. But its the perfect place for take out! We got take out there last night-- their Sweet Potato Tempura rolls are AMAZING. Perfect mix of crispy and soft. I think they are reasonably priced...although everything adds up fast! read more
