For a novice sushi eater, I was impressed with Takara. The menu is a little overwhelming for someone who hasn't ventured away from California rolls, but that is going to be the case everywhere. The food was very fresh and the service was quick. Takara is BYOB and they will supply glasses, bottle openers, corkscrews and everything else you will need. Love this place! Best sushi in Canton/Stoughton/Newton/Sharon area. Haven't been here in a few months, it looks like from others' reviews it's not BYOB now? Oh well. (You used to be able to roll up with your own wine - score!) They have an extensive menu, I recommend going with the specials, always. In my experience whatever's the special that day is always much fancier than what's on the menu. We mostly always go with rolls, but they do have good sashimi, hibachi and hand rolls. Also, their house specials are some Korean dishes, Bi Bim Bab for instance. Not expecting much based on its outside appearance, this restaurant really surprised me with an extensive and exotic drink menu (lychee martini I had was excellent) as well as pretty decent sushi rolls. They could improve the atmosphere in here a bit, however. It's a bit basic and the service was a scattered, but overall, pretty good place. Was not pleased dining there. I had ordered an Udon Beef and Seafood ramen, it literally had no taste and I mean that. The meat was tasteless and felt like chewing on rubber. My Gyoza came out cold and the garden salad was very bitter. I tried explaining my discomfort to the waitress and she kept ignoring what I was telling her. I went there because it had good reviews online, but don't be fooled as this restaurant is not worth all the hype. This is one of our favorite Japanese restaurants in the area. Oh and they also serve some great sushi. We've been coming here since they were a dinky hole-in-the-wall a few doors down. Everything is very fresh and the service is fantastic. I don't have any specific types of sushi to recommend, since sushi is so personal, but I can say that I have tried almost everything over the years and it's always been great. Even the mackerel, which I normally don't care for wasn't as fishy as what I've had at other places. And if you're not too into sushi, then there are all the other Japanese and Korean choices. On the Korean side, I often crave the Okdol Bi Bim Bap...Rice with meat and veggies served in a hot stone bowl with a fried egg on top. It's great comfort food. It is BYOB so, the options are limitless. The nearby liquor stores have smartened up over the years and provide some great choices now, knowing the business they get from Takara. In addition to the sake choices, you can also pickup some beer like Sapporo or Asahi. But you know what? I sometimes pick up a bottle of white wine. I recommend a Viognier with the sushi. Try it some time, you won't be disappointed. read more

While looking for some Korean food and not finding any we came here and tried the Okdol Bi Bim Bab seafood. it comes with rice, vegetables, shrimp, scallops and squid. It was pretty enjoyable, there wasn't that much rice though. The food was very good and had good portions. the server was not very attentive we had to ask couple of times before we got refills for our water. i will defiantly come back and try their sushi; looking at the other tables it seemed very appetizing. read more

Family friendly and consistently good. We've been to Takara more times than we've checked in, and the restaurant is always served a solid meal. We like bringing the kids here, because they so like the sushi and the sushi costs are lower here than other places in the region. I like all the soups here and my wife likes the "Okdol Bi Bim Bab," which is a meal in a hot stone bowl. Despite having a bad experience the first time here, I came here again with the intention of ordering the right food. When I first came here, I ordered the Sushi Deluxe which is chef's choice. I was crestfallen when I saw my plate filled with sashmi. ($20 for this crap!?, I thought to myself). Words to the wise, don't order chef's choice because they will take the easy route and ball up a log of rice with raw fish on top. The second time I came here, I ordered the Hot and Sour soup and the Hawaii Maki roll. The soup was amazing and very unlike a Chinese Hot and Sour soup. It was light, brothy with green scallions, shrimp, and mushrooms. The Hawaii Maki roll came with 8 delicious pieces topped with avocado. My DP and I split the shumai - which he enjoyed but I've tasted a lot better so if you can, avoid the shumai. My DP got the chicken roll and Japanese spring roll which I didn't try but if you like fried rolls of meat and vegetables, go for it. I knew about the BYOB but didn't know if that extended to hard liquor. The first time I went, I bought a small handle of vodka which I was trying to hide because I wasn't sure if we would get in trouble. So last night, I remembered to bring a nice bottle of Pinot Noir for dinner and no questions asked! read more

I like takara. it's tiny and crammed, but you can bring your own booze and the sushi is delicious. the shu mai is yummy! everything is really cheap also. most maki rolls are like $6-$10. that's a steal! parking sucks because takara is at the top of a really awkward intersection, so you're better off parking at walgreens and walking over. read more

Been awhile since I've been to Takara. This place was the nearest sushi restaurant for awhile until Gourmet Garden in Cobbs Corner and Su Su Sushi in Stoughton, MA. While their Miso soup is flavorful (better than Su Su's) however I did feel the ginger dipping sauce for the Temprura was somewhat bland. It's as if I was dipping the tempura in room temperature water. The sushi was also not too shabby either. Both the Salmon and Tuna maki I couldn't taste flavor of the fish even when I'm dipping them in the Wasabi/ Soy sauce. Overall it was okay, I had better. read more

One of our friends introduced us to this restaurant a couple of weeks ago and we went again last Saturday and it has been great both times. The restaurant itself was warm and cozy and I felt comfortable to be in as some places can be loud, bright, and overwhelming so this was a plus. The first time I ordered the beef okdol bibimbap which was delicious and fresh and on Saturday, I ordered the tofu bibimbap (chilled version) and liked it as well. The portions on the dishes I ordered were huge and they give you a lot of veggies (some places don't give you a lot) so you're kind of getting what you paid for. What I like most about it was that it came with miso soup and it fitted perfectly since both days we went it was freezing out. We also ordered the tuna pizza for appetizer and it was good as well. The only thing I found weird was that they used either a wonton or nacho chip as the "crust" with the spicy tuna on top. It was still good, but totally random. Last, the servers were pretty good and attentive. They were quick to take our orders, bring them out, refill the waters as needed, and give us the checks. What more can you ask for? Next time I'm probably going to try the sushi rolls because each time I see a sushi dish goes by for other tables, it looks delicious, however I'm already sold on their bibimbap so I might stick with that. read more

Service was nice, they were friendly and not pushy. I tried the Chirashi from this place last week. It came in a flashing bowl that's about 80% ice and a flashing light (never seen the ice part before). You don't usually serve them over ice because it makes the sashimi so cold it's hard to eat. The QUANTITY of the eatable portion was about 4 chunks (it was not thinly sliced and hard to chew). The QUALITY of their sashimi was pretty bad like it's been left out for way too long....which kind of explain it why they have to serve it on ice. The sushi has always made my belly extra happy, and the fried green tea ice cream is such a wonderful dessert you will be thinking about going back just for the ice cream for days, weeks, months, to come. I have gone two more times since the first review and found the service very attentive, so that is no longer an issue. They have VASTLY increased the maki roll menu! There are some very unique, very creative combinations and creations on there, now. Pretty impressive array of fish, too, much more than the standard salmon, tuna, shrimp and eel. In Canton, MA for the night. Yelp'd and found this place about 5 miles from my hotel in sleepy Canton. Good menu with lots of "speciality rolls", but that's not what I usually get. I got the Sushi Deluxe dinner which comes with Miso soup. This had 11 pieces of assorted sushi with a California Roll. The sushi included 2 pieces each of tuna, salmon, yellowtail, red snapper, and some other white fish, as well as a piece of shrimp sushi. I also had a large Sapporo (22 oz.) but they only had these in cans, not bottles, but it was very cold and delicious. Everything was quite good and the service was top-notch. Good place! read more

Their sushi is ok but the other stuffs that are prepared in the kitchen are not authentic Japanese by all means - sadly it is getting harder and harder to find the real authentic Japanese cuisine around here. Most of the Japanese restaurants in Boston area are Chinese or Korean influenced. Anyway, I ordered a tempura udon which is a signature Japanese noodle soup, but as you would see in the picture attached, they put broccoli and carrots in the soup instead of fish cakes and seaweed. And the broth did not taste like Dashi (Japanese fish base broth) at all. It tasted more like Chinese hot pot broth. And also the tempura sauce wasn't really tempura sauce- it was more like the ginger sauce for dumplings. I am not saying it did not taste good. But for a person who was expecting a traditional Japanese udon dish, it was a big disappointment. If you can't make an udon like an udon, you shouldn't call it an udon! It's like calling a quesadilla a pizza. The reason I gave them three stars is because their service was excellent - both sushi chefs and wait staffs were very attentive and friendly. read more

First off, let me say that I do not eat fish or sushi. One would wonder why I would find myself eating here, but I must say I love Japanese noodle dishes! I have truly enjoyed the noodle dishes that I have gotten at Takara. I have had the gyoza and tempura too, both very good. It can be quite crowded on the weekend nights, and the restaurant is small. One time I was there, and the waitress had a hard time understanding my date's request that a certain vegetable be omitted from his dish, I don't think her English was particularly good. However I have never had any other problems with the service, it was very attentive. So, if you have a friend that says, "don't drag me to another sushi restaurant!" you can assure them that there are plenty of great dishes at Takara that will satisfy them. read more

In times like these a great byob option is just the thing we need. Top it off with great sushi and great service and Takara gets 2 thumbs up. It's a pretty small place but it was quite charming. I got the sushi party option for 2 with my sushi partner in crime. It was filling and delicious and right on target with its price. The atmosphere is upbeat and the sushi fresh! Even for those that may be anti-sushi (i.e. my food-fussy fiance), there is something on the menu sure to delight (think along the lines of chicken katsu: japanese-styled fried chicken strips over rice... he loved it!) Takara is still the best sushi I have ever had. They are so creative with their maki rolls and everything is always super FRESH. Try the Bruins maki, used to be a special but they finally added it to the menu. Max maki is also one of my favorites and the tuna tartare is very tasty. We live in Canton and this place is a frequent takeout joint for us. It was the only sushi place around for awhile (now, there is Gourmet Garden in Cobbs Corner). The sushi is not bad but not great. I enjoy the spicy pork bulgogi. Their kalbi is terrible.It is a satisfactory takeout place when we're in the mood for some sushi. read more
