Being 7 months pregnant, I was HUNGRY after my doctor's appointment today & my tummy gets what it's craving. I called it in and it was ready by the time we got there (10 min drive from home). This place is literally a "hole in da wall" kind of place. I thought we missed it but luckily I google mapped what their storefront looked like. The picture of their plate doesn't do it justice tho. Picked up a mini chicken katsu curry. There was a decent amount of katsu which was really crispy, curry had good flavor, it came with a bed of rice under the katsu and mac salad made with thin spaghetti noodles, which was really creamy. Dee and her ohana are always friendly and provide great service with a smile and ono grinds! I think all of their plates and bentos come with a drink, which is a good deal! The food is tasty, and the meats are never over cooked! The loco moco's hamburger patty(s) are good sized and the brown gravy is yummy! The beef stew is nostalgic! And the breakfast meats are always perfect - crisp and flavorful! This is one of my favorite go-to places for breakfast! It does not get better than this. Taka's is the real deal when it comes to plate lunches. The food is absolute perfection and you will not find better hospitality anywhere. I ordered the garlic chicken, which was a daily special on the day we came. I am not exaggerating when I say that it was THE best garlic chicken I have ever had. Everyone tried some of my meal and we all agreed that it was the best among the things we ordered. My husband got the chow fun with smoked meat, which was also a daily special, and my parents shared a smoked bento. All of the dishes were on point and at about $10 each with a drink included, it was also a great value. Staff members came out to make sure we had all our questions answered before ordering and when we had to wait a little while for our food to come out, they gave us yet another free drink to have while we waited. It is apparent that the family running Taka's really cares about their customers. They all met us with such positive energy that before I even tried the food I was in love with this place. With amazing food and people, there is nothing not to love at Taka's. I will definitely be back the next time I'm around to try more of their specials and the rest of their menu. Takas served hot, fresh and QUALITY good every time. I've been here several times and have never been disappointed. I love their quality and portion of the food! Second visit to Taka's and this time I had their Hamburger steak with spaghetti noodle mayo salad. The salad had garlic in it and made for a great taste. Hamburger patties were homemade and not store bought. I wish I had more gravy. I like mine swimming in gravy. Picked up a Loco Moco for my son and he had to stop because he got full. We had gone to checkout the nearby Kau Kau Grill the day before and found this little hole in the wall gem in mapunapuna. We bought the hamburger steak plate for $10.50. We bought three plates and the bag was so heavy! Two large hime made patties, smothered with gravy over tons of rice and spaghetti mac salad. If that doesn't sound like a good enough deal, throw in a free drink for the price too! I felt so bad so I told them to keep the drinks. He was so nice and said "at least take the bottled water." #43 review for 2019. Flavor: Get the hamburger steak if they happen to have homemade patties! You will thank me! They do not always have homemade patties so you will need to ask. The patties were grilled to perfection - there were burnt goodness all over the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. The gravy just added more to the delicious goodness. It was worth the 10 minutes that the sign at the counter noted. The macaroni salad was par for the course. This is the second-best hamburger steak on the island (number one being from Liliha Bakery). Ambiance: It has an old school feel to it but very organized and clean. The drink options were "dress right dress" with prices clearly labeled on them. The condiments were also neatly labeled. The benches were under a canopy, so it was a nice place to sit and enjoy the meal. Value: The hamburger steak was $10.50 and well worth it! Service: The lady at the counter was very friendly and made you feel very welcomed. She explained all the specials and helped me narrow down my choices based on what I liked. how did I not know about this place?? well, anyways, it is now going to be one of my favorite places to get breakfast or lunch. let me tell you the reasons why: 1) CHEAP FOOD: sure, we all love food, but these days, it's hard to get a meal for under $10 (and by meal, i don't mean just food from a fast food place that you'll eat but get hungry a couple hours later).. i mean a good portion of food that is definitely a bang for your buck! 2) GOOD FOOD: (obviously) 3) FRIENDLY SERVICE: the lady that took my order genuinely seemed like she enjoyed her job and was very friendly 4) VARIETY OF OPTIONS: they have rotating daily specials in addition to their set menu of breakfast, and lunch bentos, but they also have brown rice as an option! (any place that has brown rice as an option gets a plus in my book :) lol) okay, so today, i decided to try this place out. I called in my order, and got a 3-egg omelette with portuguese sausage, cheese, and opted for wheat toast as my starch. It also came with a drink (i chose water). All this for $8! My order was ready to go when i got there, and when i opened up the box to eat when I got to work, the omelette was huge and I was happy to see you get 2 slices of wheat bread (with butter and jam). Yes, yes, yes! Got there and they were offering breakfast and lunch! Woohooo! Since I'm a first timer I went for both! One of the specials for the day was roast pork...yes please, I'm a sucker for roast pork. $10 - brown or white rice, toss or mac (yes! Mac made with spaghetti noodles!!), loads of roast pork and gravy. And, that includes a drink, too! What?!! Roast pork is tender, mac on point and gravy puts it all together. I feel a good coma coming! Box breakfast - I think it was $6.50 - rice, scramble eggs, bacon, Portuguese sausage, spam and luncheon meat. And that includes a drink, too!! People there are super nice and friendly! Once I ordered and waited for it to be ready, she brought it outside to me! Love it! Long overdue review!!! Taka's on Mapunapuna....TRY IT! BEST DEAL WITH THE BEST FOOD! HUGE BENTOS FOR $10 THAT COME WITH A CAN OF JUICE, SODA OR WATER. Only two years old and in the same spot that Dee's (not the same Dee as the current owner of Taka's) used to be. Customer service IS PHENOMENAL! Dee and Derek are the owners and run the place with their son, daughter and son-in-law. The owners' names start with "D" and their 3 kids are all "S" names - Shana (pronounced "SHAW-Nuh", Scotty and Steven. Derek is the exec chef who used to cook for Plaza, but now runs Taka's with the rest of the family. One of their sons also cooks and preps. Their only daughter, Shana is the "face of the company," Dee said and perfectly so. Shana is soooo nice, helpful and patient! Their oldest son lived in Washington when I went here last year, but was told he would be moving to join the rest of the family in the kitchen as well. Shana has 3 children, one son has 4 children and the oldest son who resides in Washington has 1 child. Shana's husband also helps in the kitchen. Derek is of Japanese descent and Dee is of Ilokano descent. They all live in Waipahu, but because they open at 5am, they miss the morning traffic and close at 1:30pm & get out btwn 2-3p. Dee Takamoto was so sweet and gave me some marinated boneless short ribs with rice and spaghetti Mac salad with a bottled water to try the first time I came here a year ago. The meat was so tender and full of flavor and the mac salad OMG! I was so impressed! We also got these other bentos, but they weren't for me, but everyone enjoyed them as well. I got a beef stew for myself which was ono too! On Yelp, they rave about the beef stew (not tomato based) and the homemade hamburger patties which isn't homemade every day. Sometimes they sell their famous homemade hamburger steak as a daily special, not to be confused with their hamburger steak offered every day. Everything is ono! The lunch bento is their original bento and only last year the seafood and smoked bento were added. All come with a can of juice, soda or bottled water. Canned Drinks include (Coke, Pepsi, DIET Coke, Diet Pepsi, Sprite, Hawaiian Sun Iced Tea, Hawaiian Sun Orange Passion) Oh and their breakfast is awesome too. My boss said their French toast tasted like bread pudding. Also, for the holidays they usually have prime rib for Xmas Eve and turkey plates for Thanksgiving. Both at the best prices. Sometimes they have prime rib plates as a daily special and if they do, you best be calling in your order to reserve a plate because they go fast!! The spaghetti Mac salad is a must try too. Checked this place out today! Amazing little hole in the wall! The order taker was so warm, friendly, patient, and was sincerely interested in letting us know what to order. We decided on the bento and I'm so happy we did! It was amazing! One of the best bentos I ever ate. It had Teri Beef- it was a steak with no fat! Wings dings, fish cake, Sausage, Shu Mai, Kim Chee, Taegu, Takuan. It also came with a drink for $10!!! Yasssssssss!!! So inexpensive!!! We ordered 4 bentos, waited less than 15 min and we were off! I got the smoked bento, seafood bento, and French toast and each came with a free drink. I was paid in full for less than 30 bucks so this place is throwback cheap eats. The food here is not fast food folks, so prepare to wait as they make everything to order. The best part is they have daily specials that change so there's always a reason to come back.
