I've got a haircut from this place before and it was nothing to special. The reason I'm writing this review is because I called her company over nine times and left nine voicemails in a not once got a reply. In the voicemail it clearly states that they are open and by appointment only. If that isn't unprofessionalism then I don't know what is. Read great reviews on yelp and decided to give it a try. I have had my hair cut at almost all the places here in bay area and have never been satisfied. Saw that people loved Kelsey and took an appointment with her. The first time, she did a great job, but I really dint like the style. Inspite of that I felt Kelsey was amazing. My fault, I dint want to experiment and stuck to the safe long layers. I am seriously seriously very paranoid when it comes to my hair. However, the second time, I took a picture for her, and thought let me experiment a bit, and Voila, there it was. I got the best haircut of my life. Over the past few years I have been to many different hair studios in the area, and although I've been generally pleased with all of them, there has always been something missing. Kelsey is not only a great hair stylist, but is a great conversationalist as well. I was very pleased with her friendly and welcoming personality, and was even more pleased with the outcome of my haircut. She spent the first several minutes of the appointment listening to what I was looking for, and then explained to me, in detail, what she planned to do. I have gone to Kelsey for haircuts for the past year and a half - a friend from work referred me to her. My cut isn't too complicated - straight hair, cut to a few inches below the collarbone, plus layers. It had been a struggle to find a stylist who could do this simple cut well and at a reasonable price... until I found Kelsey! She does a great job of listening to what I want in my haircut. She is proactive about asking questions to make sure that I get a cut that I'm happy with. Along with being quick and skilled in her work, she is a great conversationalist - it's fun to be able to have a nice chat while I get my hair done. She is great about remembering things we talked about last time and asking me what's new, which is pretty amazing since I only come in every 3-4 months! I have been going to Take It From the Top for over 8 years now. I love my hairdresser, Shelley, and she has been cutting hair for about 20 years. She is knowledgeable about current styles and trends and is very open to discuss what to try with my hair. She really knows how to cut curly hair, and those of you who have curly hair know how important that is! Before I starting coming to Shelley, I experienced some bad haircuts. Each stylist is an independent contractor, so I can only speak for Shelley. The salon itself is nice and comfortable. They have about 6 cutting stations and 2 wash stations. The location is really convenient - very close to Valley Fair and freeways. Parking can be hard sometimes, because Yuki Sushi is in the same little strip mall. I always look forward to coming to Take It From The Top for my cut and color every 5 weeks or so! read more

So my boyfriend wanted me blonde.I've never gone lighter before, and i was nervous. My girlfriends suggested highlights for a subtle, more natual look. I usually just go to a barber shop and get a trim, as I have had some bad experiences with the ladies at the salons who don't LISTEN, and I didn't want to end up looking like a disaster, or paying (highlights aren't so cheap), and not getting the look i wanted. I yelped for days. Take It From The top got great reviews, especially kellsey. I went down there, and was greeted by kellsey, who was nice enough to listen to my situation, and look at some pictures. She booked me for full highlights the next day. When I went in for my appointment, she showed me a picture she found online. I was so happy to see that she had thought about what I might want. She was definately on the right track. I had a really good feeling about her, so I told her to do what she thought would be best. She worked quickly, but neatly and accurately, and made great conversation while she was at it. I actually learned that she is a barber too,and has a degree in chemistry. I was in the right hands! This girl really has a knack. It is evident that she really loves what she does, she has good taste, and she really listens. She's the girl that you can say, "well, i like this type of thing or that type of thing, but i'm not sure exactly what I want," and you can let her do the rest. Over all, the experience was a pleasure. When I was done, I was gorgeous! She make me look exactly how I wanted to look! I was so happy! My boyfriend is thrilled too, which is perfect. I just moved out here from North Carolina, and I delayed getting a haircut for over 6 months because I was so sure I wouldn't be able to find someone as great and as cheap as the person I went to there. I was wrong. Kelsey is awesome- she did a great job redoing my layers, encouraged me to get a heavier bang, and despite my reservations, she was so right and did a great job! After spending four years in the bay area, I thought it would be impossible to find a reasonably priced, friendly, laid back, and gifted hair salon and stylist. Until I met Kelsey. Recommended to me by a number of friends, I gave her a shot and she's been my girl ever since (and honestly, I'm not usually loyal to one hairstylist). Kelsey has stuck with me through the long and painful process of growing my hair from a short bob and she has done a phenomenal job of making sure that my hair was still manageable in the process. Today was the first cut that i said "Okay, let's actually choose a style instead of just trimming it." It looks great. Okay so I looked at these yelp reviews and thought they looked good so I'd give it a try. Kelsey cut my hair. When I called she told me very honestly she doesn't like to take clients past 6 or so because she, and I quote, "is tired and doesn't do good work late in the day because she's been doing it all day." She took me after 6pm anyways and my appointment was at 7. I did not like my hair cut at all! I have extremely thick hair and I asked for layers, multiple layers...she gave me 1 layer long, and the 2nd layer 4 inches up from the first layer and that was it, 2 layers. I went to get it re-cut after multiple people told me they didn't like my hair cut. The new hair stylist I went to to fix my hair said when working with hair, hair stylists need to move in a half circle around the hair to cut from different angles. Kelsey just stayed in the back and cut from one angle. So all my layers looked choppy and not smooth. Another thing Kelsey did which surprised me was at the end of my hair cut she didn't take both sides of my hair and measure. So when putting my hair in front of my shoulders one side was longer than the other. Kelsey was AWESOME to talk to, very friendly and a very nice person. She got great reviews so maybe she's really good before 6pm and it's true what she told me over the phone "she's not as good after 6pm." Either way, I'm not going back here. read more

when i moved to california from oregon, it took me forever to find a new hairdresser. i jumped from one place to the next, and was never happy, until i found bruce at take it from the top! i've been going to bruce for about 7 years now, and he is AMAZING!! he's great with short hair, great with color, and great with conversation! while he isn't taking new clients anymore, everyone else in the salon is great. i've never seen a bad haircut walk out the door. and prices are very very reasonable. two thumbs up! read more

Debbie Dowling is the best! I have been getting perms and haircuts from her for many years. Not only is she a professional and talented hairdresser, but she also has a wonderful sense of humor and a touch of New York "attitude". My hard-to-perm long hair always comes out perfectly, as she uses an "air neutralized" technique which seems to make my hair feel even softer and silkier. She is also a passionate animal lover, which is a big plus in my book ;-) Even though I moved 160 miles away a few years ago, I still make sure to plan my monthly trips to San Jose around my appointments with Debbie! read more

My wife and I brought our two-year-old daughter here for her first haircut. Kelsey did an excellent job. She put a rubber band around the first lock of hair she cut off and put it in a plastic bag for us to save in the baby book. She asked if it was short enough or if we wanted it a little shorter. We asked for a little shorter and it was no problem. Kelsey was very nice to our daughter, talking to her the whole time.
