My wife and I have been looking at this restaurant for a number of months as we drove up and down Hwy 49. The lunch special looked interesting, and we were hoping for a decent sushi restaurant in Auburn. Unfortunately, we were both disappointed. We each tried their lunch special of two rolls for $8.95. The Miso Soup lacked flavor, and was luke warm, the iceburg lettuce in the small salad we were served must have been stored on an ice burg because it appeared to have been frozen and had that glassy opaque look to it. The dressing was lack luster. The rolls we were served were small with very little fish or rice. What little rice was in the roll seemed a little mushy and tasted off. The nori surrounding each roll was chewy and over whelmed any flavor that the roll might have had (I have not experienced this in a roll before), and the rolls were relatively flavorless anyway (except for the chewy nori). I can't remember the types of rolls we ordered, but it's been a couple of weeks since we ate there, and the rolls were not that memorable. The servers were neither friendly or unfriendly. Kind of neutral. I'm hoping this was just a fluke experience, but in any case it may take a while to get up the desire to go back, if I do at all. Not sure what others see in the restaurant so far. Maybe other dishes that aren't "lunch specials" might be better? read more

I went here for lunch with a friend. I am from the Bay Area and have an awesome Japaneses restaurant close to my house so I am very picky now about sushi. Love this place! Super friendly servers who go outside the box to make you happy. Some dishes that you don't find elsewhere......Tempura Salmon, for example. And everything we got we enjoyed to the max. Good quality fish and presentation was very nice. I will go back. It's the third place in that area I tried and I won't be looking for another Japanese restaurant any longer. YAY! read more

I don't understand why this has such a low rating. I came from Marin and San Francisco and was pleased and surprised to find this little restaurant. The food is excellent, the service friendly and great prices! I will keep coming back even though it is a half hour drive from my home. We love this place and will be coming back over and over again. I will be trying it again, but this time it was inconsistent. We ordered a variety to get a good idea of the food because we were hoping to have a good sushi restaurant nearby. One of our rolls was good, one was mediocre. Our wakame salad was great, but the edamame was unsalted and so it was a bit bland. We ordered a scallop appetizer, I can't remember what it was called, but it consisted of scallops arranged in a circular pattern on a plate, sitting in a broth and with crumbles of fried onions on top. There is a certain unpleasant sweetness that scallops can have if they aren't super fresh, and these had that flavor going on. The scallops had a bad aftertaste as well. I don't think that the flavors of the onions, the broth, and the scallops worked together well at all. When I give Take Maru another try, I will be avoiding anything with scallops in it. I don't recall the names of the two rolls we ordered. One was topped with tuna, the other with salmon. The one with Tuna on the outside was good, no complaints here. The one topped with salmon was not good. It should have been, the ingredients are all things I like, but the cut of fish they were using should have been tossed out. I have never had salmon with a mushy consistency. This salmon was mushy, which is a horrible texture when you're consuming raw meat. Also, raw salmon is one of my favorite things to eat. It has such a wonderful, buttery consistency, that when tempered with a bit of lemon slice and wasabe is delicious. I could eat mounds of it. This salmon did not have that flavor at all. It was actually flavorless, and that's really something because salmon is one of the stronger flavored fishes that one can eat. Honestly, I would think it had been frozen and then thawed, but I refuse to believe a sushi restaurant would do something like that. I will be back to try again after a month or so. We'll see how it goes. Avoid the scallop appetizers, IMO, the rest of it is either really good, or disturbingly underwhelming. read more

The service is not good at all here. Its kinda a weird atmosphere. I will say they use minimal rice and the rolls are large and wrapped tightly. We really didn't enjoy the taste of the rolls. They either were in a weird soupy sauce or no sauce at all. Kinda bland and flavorless over all. read more

A neat and clean restaurant with a great selection of lunch specials to choose from! All lunch specials were around $9 and came out in a timely manner. That said, the crab rangoons were cold in the middle and everything came drenched in sauce. I would come back if I were in the area. read more

I have been here twice now. The sushi chefs are great here. Wu (the owner) and Makai were very friendly. The rolls are excellent! I live in North Auburn and it is nice to have a sushi restaurant right up the street. If you are looking for good sushi with a nice atmosphere try Take Maru. read more

Too bad, this place would do really well if they hired a server who gave a dam. really almost just rude young gal who could care less. Portions are super small and over priced, One thing that was order was Udon seafood soup, $12.00 3 tiny shrimp and almost no veggies. What a waste. Pleasantly surprised. Lunch sushi special 3 rolls off the list for 12.95. Tightly rolled with just the right amount of rice. Also orders a lunch Benito box. Food was prefect. I have been here a few times and tried many sushi rolls on the menu. I have not been disappointed with any of them! The restaurant is clean and has a relaxing vibe. The paint color choice is modern and I really like the fact that the owners took the time to paint the drop ceiling. The servers are on top of filling water glasses, checking to see if anything is needed, and friendly. It's very hard to find good service and a good restaurant in Auburn and these guys do a great job. We will definitely be going back! read more

Should of known to never trust a sushi place that has Christmas ornaments hanging from their ceiling in late February. I'm not a picky person, but their tuna and salmon were slimy and their Fantasy roll gave me a stomach ache with just one bite. I hadn't eaten all day, and my appetite disappeared almost instantly. In a word: Gross. I love sushi and have never had the displeasure of having bad sushi - until yesterday. It literally tasted like I imagine sawdust might taste...bland, and disgusting, plus I was sick to my stomach a few hours later. I live in Auburn and frequent the other two sushi restaurants often, and thought I would give this a try since my friend lives on this side of town. We tried asking for some sauce to put on our rolls to see if it helped, but to no avail. They saw we werent happy with our food, but did not ask or offer to do anything, we wasted $50 on enedible food. Between the two of us, we ordered 5 different rolls and they were all awful. My Fiance had gone here a couple times and the sushi was good. However, they get a negative review for a couple reasons. 1) They are closed a lot. We will go to have dinner and lately the last couple times they had a sign posted each time with some variance of "closed. sorry". 2) The time that it takes for the food to get to the table is ridiculous. There will be 3 tables occupied and it still takes 30+ minutes to get the food. I hope things change soon because we wont be going back for a very long time. read more

Very consistent and always a yummy experience... I tweak my " Dynamite" roll every time and it is embellished perfect! I love watching sports at the bar because it is quiet and I can really enjoy my game and food! I will always gravitate here vs other Auburn spots! Well just got turned away for a second time by a waitress. The first time said they stopped serving @745 was there before 745 waiting to be approached to be seated. This time walked in right after 730 to be told they stop serving at 730. Explained my situation saying i was a returning customer and this was the second time i would be turned away. Just really bad customer service, rude waitstaff, feels like they do not appreciate buissness when it walks through the door. Recommend Ninja or go down the hill..... OK folks. Maybe I have high standards but what a total disappointment. I went there with my family (6 in total). Upon arrival, the place was clean. Atmosphere is what I would say is normal for Japanese Restaurant. So far so good. Might work out to be a good place to take the family. Things then started to change. They seemed to have no clue who was supposed to be our server. One guy came to ask what we would like to drink and an appetizer. He left. A few mins later a second guy shows up asking the same thing, this continued all night. The food was ordered. Great. Things still good over all. We ordered and the food slowly started coming out over a 20 min time span. Meaning, I get my food, my son a little later, then my sister in law, then mother in law, then my wife. All over that 20 min span. Shouldn't all our food come at once? I think so. Then when we finally all got our food, I was missing every part of my dish (dinner combo) except the main part. I asked the waiter why and he realized they did the order wrong... great. I told him I was too hungry to wait and asked for just an extra sushi roll instead of all the other items I was supposed to get. Eventually towards the end of the meal, my sushi rolls show up. There rolls were tiny. They were pathetic versions of what I would consider typical sushi rolls. The order was botched again when the second roll I ordered was the incorrect type, so I sent it back, only eating one roll. Then to add icing to the cake, when I checked the bill they charged me for the extra roll that was never brough to the table. Overall.....a horrible place and a real disappointment. I regretfully spent my time for our family's "Friday night out for dinner" and money at this place. Maybe they are trying for the "Little Food + High price = Classy Restaurant." This is my go to stop for sushi. It is the cleanest sushi place I've been to, there seating is very comfortable always comfortable and quiet. The waitress isnt really nice or have any customer service skills but she does get the job done and does it quickly. There pricing is really good also and they have a good selection of rolls! Excellent food! Not usually more than one waiter/tress and chef at a time so take someone you like to spend time with if you are dining in. They do takeout too so if you like the food (I do) call it in especially if you're the impatient type! I have been to this restaurant twice, and the first time the Todd and service were fine. When I called yesterday to see if I needed a reservation for last night, the young woman I talked to was rude and hung up on me. When we arrived, she was even ruder. Maybe a quarter of the tables were full and she told us haughtily that it would be over an hour before we could get food, even though I had called ahead. I Asked her if we could get an appetizer to hold us over, and she said "no. I told you one hour before you get anything." I have never had an experience this bad and will never go there again.
