This is the one place Í've reviewed that deserves more than 5 stars. I found them when I was searching for a bakery to do a cake for my parent's 50th anniversary. They make everything from scratch and bake it there in the bakery (whereas some of the upscale bakeries are starting to bake at a central location and freeze the cakes). The frosting is made with butter, yea baby REAL butter! I have purchased cakes from them several times since the anniversary cake. They have Italian cream and chocolate Italian cream that are do die for. On my parent's anniversary cake, they brushed real gold on by hand. For my husband's birthday , I picked up a carrot cake. I've never been a big fan of carrot cake but this was so delicious. I loved the fact that you can tell it was fresh shredded carrot in the cake. They are great to work with and can do the best custom decorations including company logos. Besides pre-ordering cakes, they have smaller cakes (like a regular 2 layer cake) there that you can pick up. They are only around $20-$25 and so much better than anything you could pick up at the grocery store. They are located in a little rundown strip center on Hwy 6 N. behind the Whataburger. It is kind of a seedy looking place but the baker is right there in the middle. I think it just says "Bakery" above the store. Find the Whataburger and you are there. I came in one Tuesday in need of a birthday cake. I read several reviews and almost everyone seemed to be pleased. When I arrived there were several people in front of me so I glanced the place, looked at the bakery items and listened to what other customers were ordering. The inside is very clean with a cute modern feel. There didn't seem to be any particular line so I glanced the display items. After explaining I needed a cake for this Sunday but had a few questions the lady stated she had to go ask the bakers if they were able to accommodate it since it was graduation weekend and there were so many orders already to fulfill. I didn't like this for several reasons- 1. During the short time I was there it seemed to be no issue with others placing new orders as the place was packed. 2. If you were no longer able to accommodate guests, they should be told that upon entering or have a sign posted stating this NOT once the order is ready to be placed, its a waste of time and had me feeling my business was not wanted. 3. Her attitude was not very friendly and if I honestly didn't need this cake in the short timeframe I would've went somewhere else. As I was waiting I asked another lady if they provided samples (which I was willing to pay for), she stated no. After reading other reviews a customer was able to sample so I'm unsure what changed. I told her I was interested in ordering a cake with either strawberry or another flavor in the middle. She stated its one of her favorites and really likes it. I explained I was a new customer and it's difficult ordering a whole cake without having any knowledge of how it will taste, especially since they didn't have samples or anything in the display case made with strawberry. The lady finally came back and stated the bakers could in fact make the cake. I inquired about the 2-layer cake with strawberry in the middle. I asked if the cake could be half strawberry and half another flavor- I was told no. I asked if they had a butter cake, she stated the cake would be white. There was a booklet of cake ideas near the stand which I flipped through for several minutes as I was indecisive. After the lady didn't seem to offer much help and stated any type of designs (flowers, designs, etc) would be extra I just ordered a basic, plain cake with Happy Birthday on it. Again, had I not needed a cake as quickly as I did I would've supported another bakery who seemed like they wanted my business. I ended up purchasing a small red velvet cupcake, which was a little dry but ok along with the 2-layer cake. You have the option of paying for the cake in whole or half. I needed the cake for Sunday but she told me they closed Saturday at 2pm and the cake would be ready then. The cake had pretty trimmings and was good, but not great and seemed a bit dry. I was also expecting to see a FULL strawberry filling. In my opinion, the cake wasn't strawberry- it was a white cake with a THIN line of strawberry preserves. I'm not a fan of grocery store cakes so I was looking forward to supporting the local bakery, great service and a spectacular-tasting cake as many other Yelpers reviewed. Sadly, I was disappointed. My husband loves the Berry White cake from Empire Cafe, so when his birthday approached I thought getting this cake for him would be a nice surprise. The problem was, the cakes at Empire Cafe are far too big. We only had about 6 people at his birthday dinner. So I googled the supplier and found out that Take the Cake supplied Empire Cafe, as well as several other local restaurants, with their wonderful cakes. So I went on Take the Cake's website and did not see the Berry White cake. I called to see if they indeed make this cake and they said yes, however, the recipe for the Berry White cake belongs to Empire Cafe. So they told me to call and speak to the manager of Empire Cafe to get permission for Take the Cake to fill the order. I received permission no problem and placed the order with Take the Cake. It was quite a drive for me to pick it up, but it was worth it! The cake was a hit! And the cake we had left over was still good days later. My dad started making a list in his head as to upcoming occasions that would require cake so we could make an excuse to keep ordering it. A couple of facts about me are that I hate carrot cake and I much prefer whipped icing, but the women love carrot cake & buttercream so this is the place I went with since Take the Cake had a good reputation for both. I just planned on not eating any of it, no big deal. I tried a little piece after it was cut and it was pretty damned good so I had a whole piece. The buttercream isn't too sweet and the pineapple and walnuts compliment the carrot so well, it was a treat. It was so dense but still moist; a real achievement in carrot cake in my opinion. The customer service was great both on the phone and in person. We definitely need to check out the rest of their treats. Two things to remember, the yelp address is slightly off when going to Google Maps, so just go a little further down 6. I know that their cakes are wholesaled to a number of restaurants in town and I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I've eaten plenty of their variations at Empire Cafe. A great endorsement for me. I was lucky enough to pull off a last minute birthday request for a Hummingbird cake because it's a cake that they keep in stock. (I didn't even know what a Hummingbird cake was until my GF requested one). Thirty-six dollars for a Eight Inch Round cake. Absolutely worth it. THE HUMMINGBIRD. Enough said. It's what I always get when I drive out to my parents house since it's far from my apartment. The Hummingbird is really similar to carrot cake, except the carrots are substituted with bananas and pineapple. The cake is filled and iced with a pecan cream cheese frosting. I called and ordered the carrot cake 3 days before my event- they took all my info and payment over the phone. Easy. The cake was heavy with it's double layers. I just placed an order for my daughter's first birthday cake. I am very excited and will post a photo next month. The lady at the counter was very thorough with my requests. I hope the execution is what I'm expecting. I have had a a couple of friends order cakes from there. My favorite is the White Chocolate Raspberry cake. The downside - they can't really decorate it since the frosting is so light and made with whipping cream and has to be refrigerated the entire time (so it is harder to make this as a centerpiece for a party). Another cake I've tried is the Hummingbird. This was for a baby shower and it was beautifully decorated. If you're a fan of carrot cake, you should definitely try this. It is similar but with pineapple and banana. I picked this for one of the tiers of my daughter's cake. Lastly, their pecan bars are DELICIOUS. I'm not a pecan pie fan, but when my friend brought these over, I ate half a dozen of them. The texture, flavor... everything was perfect. Between the flavors of the cakes and bars I have tried, this place deserves 5 stars. I am also happy to serve a real buttercream cake at my daughter's birthday, since most cake places use the fake stuff that doesn't have to be refrigerated (as in, all of the grocery store cakes and wedding cakes that sit out for a couple of days to be decorated). The pricing also deserves 5 stars, as I'm not sure where you can get decorated tiered cakes for what they're charging. It probably helps that they're located further from town. I have been coming to this little bakery in the middle of nowhere for a while. Used to be owned by a local pastry chef and was bought out last year (I think) by the Carabba family who also owns Common Bond. So far they have maintained the quality of the product. I recommend the hummingbird cake and Italian cream cake - both are moist and delicious! They offer these flavors in their refrigerator daily so it's quite convenient and also by the slice. Their pumpkin pie (seasonal item) is just heavenly - I had to have it twice for Thanksgiving and Christmas, yes it was that good. I also recommend the White chocolate raspberry, which is a premium flavor that needs to be ordered ahead of time. If you are a fan of grocery store cakes with the sugary sweet cake and icing, you may not appreciate how refined this is. Three layers of cake, fresh raspberries in the middle, white chocolate mousse was subtle and not too sweet - reminds me of desserts in Europe. Prices are reasonable which is another reason why this place is very popular. read more
