Came here with my boyfriend while visiting Union Market on a Saturday afternoon--the line was super long, which convinced us to hop on (weird how that works!). It's basically Korean rice bowls ordered and assembled in a Chipotle-style line. An ingenious idea, but not really well executed. My boyfriend and I both got the 1/2 rice 1/2 slaw bowl with bulgogi ($1 extra), kimchi, and full toppings. I had brown rice and he had white, but both were undercooked and still hard. I wouldn't recommend the 1/2 and 1/2 mix either--the heat of the rice and the coldness of the slaw don't mix well. The bulgogi was good, but also just seemed a little off. A great concept, but a little underwhelming. Hope they can pick up their game because I love the idea and see the potential! read more

Tacos+BBQ+Korean sounds like an unlikely combo, but TaKorean amazingly fuses this combo into parcels of pure foodgasm! Bulgogi BBQ meat is very tender and juicy, paired with crunchy Kimchi style slaw that adds just the right amount of sour and spice, and creamy sauces complement each taco with a final delicious touch. Occurs to me that, in light of the fact that reviews can really hurt a business, restauranteurs should offer an in-house feedback option. As an example, if unhappy within 3-6 bites, the meal can be returned for money back and/or another option to short circuit the negative Yelp. Restaurants really can't be expected to get it right all the time. There are so many potentials that could undermine what is usually a great meal. Nonetheless, with that in mind, on my visit, I found the following which may not always be the case: Initially, the presentation looked good until I kept eating but couldn't find 'fresh' or the special 'flavor' profile that would have made the difference. Asked if their hot sauce had preservatives. Thankfully, I was told the truth that, yes, preservatives are on tap. The standard that allows additives in food management made me suspicious of their food sources and ingredients for the balance of the menu. At that point, I should have withdrawn my order because the chain does not yet have the lowdown on the impact of chemicals on metabolic efficiencies. But, I persevered to find that the chicken chunks had a strangely rubber-like texture. The kale and their version of roasted cauliflower were lack luster. Shucks! The food here is just plain confusing - it is neither Mexican or Korean or anything close to it. The sauces are overly heavy and mostly sweet. There is a distinct sameness running through all their food whether you get the chicken bowl or tofu bowl or steak Bulgogi. It's like they took a large container of the same sauce and dumped it on everything with a few tweaks. Nothing light, healthy, or fresh so I just don't get it. And which part of this is supposed to be Mexican? The corn tortillas? Mushy guacamole? Chopped cilantro? Someone didn't think this concept through.... read more

TaKorean has great potential. Great concept but some key elements were missing. As Cory Z. said, the tortilla was the biggest problem. They were just not good. The fillings were pretty decent and the slaws they recommended matched well with the meats but the tortilla was a big miss. And for a taco, that's crucial... They should know this! We ordered 3 tacos of pork, beef, and chicken topped with kimchi slaw and sauces on the side. Unfortunately, after having had lots of good Korean food elsewhere, this place left much to be desired. The kimchi slaw was very light and did not remind me of any kimchi, but rather a rushed salted pickling method. In terms of the meat, I would rank it as chicken being the best, then beef, and finally pork. Adding sauce helped to add more flavor, however it did seem to be sauces from a bottle. 100% one of my favorite taco spots (and that's saying a lot!) I am OBSESSED with tacos and all things fusion, and this place does it perfectly. Locations are slightly inconvenient for me when I go to DC but I always try to make it a point to go. I love the half & half bowl - with chicken (but also love the tofu). I get these tacos almost every weekend because they are so good. Love all the toppings - the kale slaw is unique and delicious and the kimchi tastes like, well, kimchi. The chicken is pretty good but the bulgogi and pork are better! Now they have an app with rewards which is great for addicts like myself. I think this place deserves a 3.5 stars, if that were an option. It's good food, not amazing, but good. I've had the bulgogi salad with romaine slaw, pork salad with kale slaw and guacamole cream, pork and chicken tacos. It's a good meal, not a "take a bite and you're in heaven" kind. The salads are $9, additional buck for guac cream. Tacos are $3.50 each or three for $9. My recommendation would be to try one taco and save room to graze more food at Union Market. I was actually pretty excited to try this out. Like some reviewers have said, the set up is very similar to Chipotle or ShopHouse, an a la carte assembly line style . I got the bulgogi bowl. I had it with the kale slaw which was quite good but the meat was way too salty (I love salty food so that's saying a lot!) and no kimchee available?! I always come to Union Market telling myself I'm finally going to try something new but after scouting the other options and pop ups I always end up coming back here. Portions are large and tasty. There aren't too many salads or healthy options at Union so this is your safest bet if your counting calories. Regardless the meats and kimchi are so yummy and flavorful. I love takorean. I've had it in every location except the food truck and I'm so glad they opened a shop in Navy Yard. I love tacos with kale slaw and bulgogi and all the sauces. The new salsa roja is as great addition for some spice that isn't quite a punchy as the sriracha. You can also get rice or slaw bowls in the style of chipotle's burrito bowl. They will let you mix rice/slaw or types of slaw and also types of protein, which is really nice for changing things up. The people behind the counter are really friendly and remember my order to the degree that I'm pretty sure I must go too much! Love this place! Brings a unique spin on tacos primarily using Korean ingredients, hence the name. There's not an overwhelming amount of options, which makes the consumer's job much easier when choosing what to put on the taco itself. I just purchased a few tacos and allowed the workers to add whatever they felt was the best combination and it was damn good. 3.5 stars to be exact. I went in a couple days ago after a couple drinks across the street and to be honest i was expecting a little more.. Maybe its a new location, or still under development, but the menu items seemed very basic. There were three meat options, one rice, and only three "vegetable" side options. Maybe i've been spoiled by cava or chipotle with their menu bar, but looking at my options at takorean, in total it seemed sparse. Takorean is never my first choice at Union Market, but almost every time I visit, someone I'm with gets a taco. And every time, I seem to like them a little less. On my most recent visit, the guacamole was runny and brown and tasted off; the rice was clumpy, overcooked and unseasoned; and the corn tortillas tasted worse than grocery store tortillas. The meat and slaws do seem to have decent flavor, but with so many crappy ingredients surrounding them, it's hard to tell. Maybe the quality has declined, but I don't understand how this spot became so popular. read more
