Finally checked Tal Bagels off my list. Overall it is a very mediocre bagel spot. I might not go back again. Their 1st Ave location is spacious with many indoor seatings and a restroom. The service was lacking as I had to remind our server a few times I wanted my bagels to be toasted. We thought it would be a great spot to work or study. The bagel texture is soft, fluffy and flat. Yet both sesame bagels are not fully seasoned with toasted sesame. BEC bagel tastes standard. Tofu veggie spread is my staple at any bagel shops. Wonderful fresh bagels and a selection of vegan Cream cheese options (it is small, but not bad) that are made very well. They have several kinds of coffee, medium to dark blends, etc and have vegan and non-vegan milk and sweeteners. Also it is not expensive, about $4.50 for a bagel and cream cheese (I have been to a bunch of places in the city that charge about 8 for the same thing) I go around 11:30 am on weekdays and always find comfortable seating. For me a great bagel is one in which you don't have to fight it when you try to bite off a chunk of it and has a really soft chewy interior. also, I've learned that fresh bagels should not be toasted, but bagels that have been sitting out for a while. Should be toasted to give it some of that chewiness and take away that dryer, stale, white bread flavor. My friend and I got the same thing, scallion cream cheese on an everything bagel except I got it on toasted and he got it toasted and the toasted one by far was much better. If you come here, definitely get your bagel toasted. It will please you if you like a harder shell, and the toasted aspect, gives you back some of that springiness. Tal Bagels is a chain bagel shop but nonetheless I always enjoy the bagels and coffee. They don't skimp on the cream cheese and the bagels are fresh baked daily. I know what the bagels and cream cheese taste like so it's a safe alternative when I'm in this neighborhood. They are really busy at this location. I'm glad I found a table. I'm eating half my bagel and saving half. Customer Service is typical not super friendly but they take care of business. I'm recommending you try Tal Bagels. They also have a huge variety of food selections. I'm addicted to the bagels! Like I said the customer service is hit or miss. I give the employees a friendly attitude so I usually don't have a problem. If they're busy you have to be patient. Crazy how overpriced the condiments are here. $12 for some cream cheese is insane. The bagels aren't bad but I have had better. They also look like they have all the normal bagel shop heavy hitters. They had some baked goods as well that looked fresh. The donuts, cinnamon rolls, and other cookies were other options if you weren't into the bagels. I was really looking forward to eating a bagel for the first time since August, and there's no place better to find authentic bagels than in NYC. My friend had some nice words to say about Tal's so I was pretty excited to see what all the hype was about. Safe to say, I have had much, much better. I tried the cinnamon bagel, and it was pretty filling, well layered with cream cheese, but tasted incredibly average. Most of my disappointment came from its temperature, which was room temperature. I wanted a warm, toasty bagel experience, but Tal's definitely couldn't live up to the NY bagel hype. I would also recommend to the Tal's cashiers to be more patient and vocal with customers. I couldn't hear the man behind the counter say my order clearly, and he grew frustrated with me that he had to repeat himself. I think the bagels are one of the best in the city (much much better than the nearby Ess-a-Bagel, which to this day, I can't understand why people stand in line for hours to get in).
