This bagel shop needs no introduction. It has been around forever and stood the test of time. I stopped by the other day to pick up a few things. Lox on Everything Bagel (8.5/10) - Almost a perfect sandwich. Smoked salmon was buttery and delicious. I thought there was maybe too much scallion cream cheese, but hard to complain about that. Sausage, Egg & Cheese on Sesame Bagel (6/10) - The bagel needed more time in the oven. It was a bit chewy. Otherwise, the sandwich was fine. Black & White Cookie (8/10) - Not an expert, but I thought this was a good version. Chocolate Babka (6.5/10) - Somewhat dense and little bit dry, but very chocolatey. Nice workers at the Amtrak station Moynihan food court. First time trying these, I love bagels and always looking for a good NY style ever since I left nyc for SC. As soon as I got off the train I began looking. The H&H counter was appealing with the bagels all lined up asking to be brought. I obliged and ordered a sesame, my fave! Why are there no bagel shops within a block or two of Central Park?! Had to walk for 20 minutes for several blocks to get to one of the bagel shops, namely H&H Bagels. We arrived on a Saturday early afternoon and thank goodness the rush ended so that by the time we had placed our order, a table freed up for us to sit and enjoy our sandwiches. H&H Bagels has about 3-4 tables inside for seating and you're on your own if those tables are full. We ordered the Steak, Egg & Cheese ($9.65) and H&H Club ($13.90). Both were hefty and delicious! Very satisfying, especially if you can split both bagel sandwiches with another and try both! I don't think the hot sauce contributed much, but this was certainly spicy from the crunchy jalapeños,. the winner was the spicy scallion cream cheese, which was balanced between jalapeños spice and the creamy cool cheese flavor. I never thought I would miss standing on line for H&H. Lines out the door, at times. I had some coworkers who visited regularly so they mostly would kindly bring me back bagels. They only have two little tables so it makes it hard to eat if it's cold outside and you're just visiting the city where nowhere else to go. I was still able to ask someone that was already finished eating if it was ok for me to sit down there. No issues at all. I ordered my Nova Sandwich with cream cheese, tomatoes and capers. They didn't ask me what kind of cream cheese I wanted and I forgot to tell them to use scallion cream cheese. The different cream cheese could have changed my thoughts on the sandwich. But overall I was not really impressed. The bagel itself was delicious, but way too pricey for the amount of lox they put on the sandwich. H&H is fine if you're in the area and wanting a bagel, but doesn't displace my favorite shops. My everything bagel had a good amount of seasoning, and the scallion cream cheese had good flavor as well. The textures though, missed the mark a bit. The bagel didn't have the chewiness I like, but was more bready, and was toasted too much. The final result was a quite crunchy bagel and cream cheese that had gone more or less liquid.
