I didn't know they had dropped the first half of their name and become hip when I went here to study yesterday, but not much has changed, really. They DO have gender neutral bathrooms, which is a 6th star, in my book (sad, yeah? Bare minimum gets above and beyond cred). I'm always astonished by how many people are in there and how clean they keep everything. I got a strawberry banana smoothie and it was delightful. I like that they blend it properly so it's almost creamy. Not like the monsters elsewhere that'll leave chunks of ice. We started with a piece of condensed milk and sesame mochi. SO ONO! We studied physics for 4 hours, ate, had 2 drinks each, met LeVar Berton and took a pic, chatted with staff. We really enjoyed the people who work there. They're very real. Not overly fake nice (like me), but friendly and warm. I live across the street and should come more often, but it's so good everyone loves it and I don't enjoy people too much. So, would definitely recommend. If, for nothing else, the gender neutral restrooms. Coffee cheers to accessibility for all! read more

My wife and I were out to head to go do laundry in Kapahulu and we always like to try new coffee shops. Coffee Talk wasn't exactly on the way but it wasn't out of the way either. So we figured, why not?! Parking wasn't too bad because we were out early. There are meters and we found a spot a few steps from the door. It was actually quite busy to be an early Saturday morning. Folks are in the know!! We knew we were in for a treat. It is very cute. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Very cool vibe. You can sit and study or read while you have your nosh and a coffee. Lots of food offerings. We ended up getting the lox bagel. Lox is always a bit pricey (about $15) but I have no regrets. It was delicious. We got ice coffees with oat milk. My wife got decaf of course. The roast was smooth and yummy. Our food did take a bit to come out. We waited about 15 minutes. It was quite a busy morning. I was happy to wait. The staff was very nice and answered any questions we had. They have wonderful pastries, quiche, sandwiches, juice, kombucha (in the bottle), and so much more. We sat outside to eat before going on with our day. It was the perfect start to an even better day. This is definitely on our short list of go-to coffee shops. read more

Let me preface this by saying that I've never written a negative review for anything. I don't abide by the concept that "the customer is always right" and I fully support workers and small businesses respect and rights. Unfortunately I had a pretty bad experience here, which is sad because all of the past times I've been have been absolutely great. Today however, makes me never want to go back. Coffee Talk is known as a local spot for folks to work-- many outlets/seats, chill environment, good food/drink etc. Recently (perhaps this week?) they instituted a new rule in which you are asked to purchase something else besides your initial order if you've been there for over an hour. I did that. This is kept track with a piece of paper given to you with the time you've purchased something on it. Based on the language of this slip of paper, it was completely unclear to me that you needed to purchase something else after that second purchase. After about an hour and a half after that 9:55 purchase, a woman that I did not know, who did not announce herself to me as to who she was at all, came up and started very aggressively telling me that "she can't keep this place open if people are just sitting around. It's already 11:30 and you haven't bought anything else." I tried to be as polite as possible, telling her I hadn't understood the policy and that I HAD been back to purchase after the first hour allotment. She was having none of it. Basically just talked over me, really just plain rude. I told her I'd be happy to purchase something else, but at that point I was so put off that I just left. Clearly this system was just put in place, clearly the wording is confusing, and I had only missed the next time allotment by a half hour. I watched her for a few minutes go through the cafe and confront others in the same way. I'm from Boston originally and I am completely used to casual abrasiveness or shortness-- this was not that. I completely understand the need to have people purchase so that you can stay in business and I've always been mindful of purchasing multiple orders, especially if I'm there for more than an hour. I hope coffee talk continues to do well, and I know my business doesn't hinge on it's success, but I can't see myself going there anymore after being treated so rudely by what seemed to be the owner. She could have easily been just a little bit kinder and I would have happily purchased something else and thought nothing of it. Bummer, because I liked this spot a lot, but I straight up don't feel welcome here anymore. I hope you all have better experiences, I hope this new policy helps Coffee Talk thrive, and I hope anyone that reads this really pays attention to this policy unless they want to get publicly criticized by a total stranger for making a simple mistake. I love supporting small businesses and I used to go to Coffee Talk all the time to study with my friends. The times that I went they never mentioned how we have to buy something to stay there for another hour. The rule is very unclear and should be written on the time sheet and they shouldn't be so rude about it when their staff and system isn't organized. I noticed they take forever to charge your drink so the hour time limit isn't really accurate. They don't really consider if we bought multiple things the first round, they just expect us to buy another thing to stay there for another hour. Coffee Talk advertises a welcoming atmosphere and how the community should support local businesses like them. I'm a student at Chaminade and have been coming here for a while and I found it really sad that a small community business would implement a rule like this making it hard to support them. read more

The line was intimidating but went by smoothly. Latte was probably one of the best on island but what they don't highlight enough is their food! I've always wanted to try this place ever and I got to try it today. There was a long line but it moved pretty quick since they make your drink(s) before you pay. I'm going for four stars but this place can be anywhere from a two to a five star experience, depending on when you walk in. Sometimes it's sparkling clean. Sometimes much less so. Sometimes the baristas are amazing. Sometimes they act like I'm bothering them while they're sitting on the toilet. The drinks are hit or miss. Same for the pastry. We just stopped in to grab some coffee and a small bite. Confusion early on: there are no prices on the menu board. When we asked why, we were given the excuse "...because prices fluctuate." Yet, they do have a menu board with prices of all the liquor based drinks they offer. What sizes of the coffee drinks are available. The fellow said 16 oz after he checked with someone else. Only one size? What if I wanted an 8 oz cappuccino. Personally, if you spend $20k on an Italian espresso machine it might be worthwhile to do some research into the various drinks and why size on milk based drinks can be important. I ordered a drip coffee piece of the quiche and my wife had a grab and go Sammie with a latte. The coffee was mediocre while the sandwich bread was dry. The quiche was also falling apart. I don't drink coffee on the regular but this spot is so cute and the cafe offers interesting flavor choices, amazing and HUGE in-house pastries, and nice ambiance. Drinks are a little on the pricier side, but food prices seem reasonable. The extra wow factor about this cafe is the interior space and decor. The pop culture wall paintings and kitschy hangings just make the place. If you're waiting in line for Kokohead Cafe and have a good 30 minutes to an hour to kill, come grab a drink here, then head over next door to Gecko Books & Comics to browse through collectibles, game boards and comics! read more

I've always had a good experience here at coffee talk. I really enjoy looking at the aesthetics of the place. I come here often to do work and not once has anyone approached me and asked me to buy something after an hour. This Kaimuki hot spot is located right off the Main Street, but offers ample parking the two paid lots behind it. There's a fair amount of seating inside, and plenty of cozy nooks to read or work in. I love coming here when I have a lot for work to get done, as I find it less distracting than Starbucks, and with a better more relaxed vibe. When it comes to their coffee I have to be honest it's not my favorite. If you want a straightforward drip coffee, it's pretty good. I've tried some of their lattes which are okay too. They have really great FRESH pastries, and food options. Needed a place with quick service and a place to sit down and chat with a friend. So glad I remembered this place where I haven't been in ages. Love the independent coffee shop feel with the cool tables and the menu of fresh tasty sandwiches, variety of coffee and non coffee drinks, and freshly baked pastries . The Turkey avocado sandwich was delicious but I was so hungry I devoured before remembering to take a photo. It comes packaged in the refrigerator section so you can just grab n go or eat there. Since we didn't feel like coffee we were delighted to be able to choose green or black tea with different flavored syrups . We got the black tea with mango as recommended and it was sweet but we liked it. The butter caramel muffin was huge, nicely browned on the outside and soft and moist on the inside. This is such a cute little coffee shop located in Kaimuki. Everything is homemade including the food they offer. I ended up getting an almond crossiant that was flakier than some of my friends. I had the house coffee in a huge mug and it automatically made me smile. There's something about having coffee in a huge brightly colored mug. Also if you get the house blend, you get free refills. But I literally could only have one because their house coffee is really strong. I ended up also getting mint tea and kombucha from Coffee Talk as well. The tea is a really good deal because the tea bags are super strong and you can refill one more time before the tea bags loose strength. I appreciated the quirky hipsterness of this coffee shop. But I really appreciated the quick wifi. I also loved that this is one more place I can work remotely. I think my favorite thing that wasn't the drinks or the food was the decor. The paintings are super cool and I'm wondering who painted them. I'm also loving the Heather Brown tables. It made for a super instagramable moment for me. I've been coming her sporadically for years. Each time I set myself up to be disappointed. There's a lot to like about this coffeeshop: lots of seating arrangements (small tables, counter space, high tables, etc.), there are different sections of the shop that are unique, they have bathrooms on-site and ample parking is available (in a paid parking lot across the street). Essentially, this is a good place to meet people and/or get some work done. On top of all the pluses, I can't get over the fact that their coffee isn't good. I'm speaking specifically about the cold brew, the nitro cold brew and the espresso. The coffee tastes stale and burnt. (It reminds me of Starbucks coffee.) The cold brewing method is essentially one of the least technical and more forgiving methods for brewing coffee, so I'm guessing the issue is more with the beans that they use. They do have an extensive menu here with food, pastries, teas and lots of flavored coffee options. I haven't had anything else except for the cold brews and espresso, so this is largely what my review reflects. Again, if "coffee" is in the title of the store, I'd expect the basic options to be done well. Unfortunately, this is not the case. read more

Being a student at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, this place is my ultimate go-to spot! They have had their inside dining area open for a couple months now and the ambiance is just trendy and very comforting. Due to covid, its hard to meet new people and get out but your experience at Coffee Talk allows you to indulge in those good ol' days. I personally love the Thai Iced Coffee and if you are a coffee fiend like me, you'll love it too! It is super strong and will definitely kick you into gear when you need to study for an exam or just have a jump start to your day. It is definitely not too sweet or bitter of a taste and goes great with any meal item. In addition, I love their mushroom melt ( I get it with no tomatos.. as a personal choice) it is cheesy and on the healthier side of meals with spinach and mushrooms as its main taste. I have also tasted the Coffee Talk shake which is an icy blend of coffee and hazelnut for those who have a sweeter tooth. Lastly, the iced Matcha Latte is always a healthy alternative for those who may not like the taste of coffee too much. All of these menu items are really good and definitely worth a try! The management takes covid very seriously and has made sure their customers experience is the best it can be. They have tables socially distant with some event having barriers to provide even more precautions. They only allow you to occupy a table for 90 minutes in order to give other customers a chance of enjoying their coffee shop. The service is amazing! Everyone is very kind and efficient! Sometimes the line may be long but the wait is not too long and they get you in and out when you need it. Coffee shop by day Casual Extraordinary Lounge at night (Thursdays - Saturday)! The service and Staff are outstanding! Very personable and skillful at the Art of Spirits!! They are indeed "Mixologist"! Once they understand what you like and what you are feeling at the moment ~ They will prepare something that will Blow your Mind!! Brittney is the Manager, Plus!! Although she runs the bar/restaurant, she is the designer of the experience! Her stunning and outgoing personality and amazing smile welcomes you as you enter. The only thing that is always decent is the breakfast sandwich, but after they forgot to put my husband's order in and treated us like we were crazy people who forgot what we ordered is the last straw. I've lived in Kaimuki my entire life, and I try to always support local businesses. I will NEVER be patronizing Coffee Talk again. On the practical note, if you're coming to study, depending on where you're seated there aren't many outlets available to charge laptops. When it gets busy it can become a bit loud and servers might be a bit preoccupied. However, I've always great costumer service and help when ordering drinks/food.
