tama sushi.. the chefs that you are. I try a new sushi roll each time and it NEVER misses a beat. I'm confident that I could bring a friend here and tell them to pick anything off the menu BLINDFOLDED and they'd like it. Keep up the good work y'all. Best sushi place out there side note: .. i don't think i have a note, just go grab some of that sushi please

Vegan heaven!! They have an entire vegan menu of not just sushi but all kinds of other apps and entrees. We went for the sushi and tried the vegan delux crunchy, v 911, magic mountain and japones. The deluxe crunchy was our favvv so so good. I enjoyed the v 911 too as it had a nice kick. The magic mountain and japones were alright. I'd probably try something else in place of those next time but i can appreciate how much variety and interesting vegan sushi they have. Came on a Wednesday evening and it was BUSY and the space is small so you can expect to wait a little during peak times. Staff was really nice!

This sushi spot saved me through my pregnancy! Their vegan options are amazing, I never once felt like I was missing out. After I had my baby, we kept coming back so I could finally try the fish sushi, and it did not disappoint. The staff is wonderful and so helpful whenever I have questions. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Seating-wise, indoor is a little tight, but the outdoor seating is really nice.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] This place will always have a spot in my heart, and I make it a point to stop in whenever I'm in HB.

I lived in LA for a long time and was spoiled by the Vegan Sushi (example: Shojin) So when I moved to OC I've been on the hunt for a solid Vegan option. It's not an all vegan Japanese restaurant but they have a large Vegan menu and it did not let me down. The line and wait time took about 30 min and I was starving so I was getting beyond hangry. The long wait shows how good this spot is but I could have done without it haha! I love Udon Vegetable Tempura and it's really hard to find a vegan option let alone one this good. The broth was rich with ginger and garlic. The noodles had the perfect chew, the Sushi I tried that my brother got was amazing as well. I am looking forward to coming back soon and explore the rest of the Vegan menu!

Excellent service. Small indoor seating area and with sushi bar, and small outdoor seating area. We chose to sit outside. Hubby liked the freshness and size of his six salmon sushi, and he later ordered the gyoza which seemed to be freshly made and fried. He liked his green tea too. My cucumber roll (without rice) was refreshing in this warm summer evening. This restaurant has something for everyone because it has ramen too, which we'll try on a cooler evening; vegan and nonvegan options, gluten-free options.

You need to disclose that you're overcharging! This really breaks my heart You can see from my receipt that they gave to me plus the items on the menu that we took a picture of that they're charging a dollar more on these items on our bill

[[HIGHLIGHT]]lovely dining experience on a thursday night.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] my bf and i went for my dinner and i loved how many vegan options were available (and how the menu distinguished between vegan and non-vegan options. service was quick even though it was an hour before close, and the owner was super sweet w helping us take our picture and walking us through ordering. we were warned about the spiciness of our food and she was right LOL the food was SO YUMMY. whatever tofu wizardry they're using to make the "spicy tuna" is truly magic because the texture was unlike anything i'd had before. the tempura shiitake was fun and light and crunchy, and everything tasted fresh. the ramen was yummy but the sushi was the star. would love to come back and try more

I've had Tama on my list for so long, and now I can finally say I've marked it off my list, but now it's moved to my list of regs. Super happy with the entire experience. Service was perfect: attentive but not overwhelming. My server took her time walking me through the entire vegan menu. I ordered three rolls: Cute Wrap... bright veggies and wrapped in crisp cucumber. Sauce was light, but very deep in flavor and there's seaweed in the roll which is the perfect touch. Squid Game was bomb! Konjac is the squid... this role is next level and so fun! The combo of the sauces was exquisite! The baked LB was not my fav, plain water chestnuts on top of a veggie roll. It lacked any character and really needed more sauce. I'm happy to have tried it but won't order it again. Oh and did I say miso soup is on the house!!! Cannot wait to return! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Inside is somewhat small but cozy. Equal amount of dining space outside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There's a private parking lot, but can be busy during peak times.

I found the food to be incredible considering I am Celiac! They were incredibly knowledgeable and accommodating to my dietary restrictions. My waitress was kind when I asked multiple questions about things and made sure to check with the chef. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I also enjoyed the quaint area it was in, it gave a good vibe.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Needless to say I will be back.

Vegan Chicken Teriyaki and Shrimp Tempura Appetizer
    Stephanie S.

Amazing selection of sushi and dishes for vegans and non vegans alike. Some highlights are: Shrimp Tempura - 10/10 Texture was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. My bf who is not vegetarian was shocked that it wasn't real shrimp! Chicken Teriyaki - 10/10 I haven't seen this on a menu anywhere before. Was super stoked to try and it didn't disappoint. The texture was made to feel like real chicken and the sauce on it was great. I asked for sriracha on the side and it rounded out the dish perfectly. The sushi rolls were delicious as well. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Overall, great staff, great vibe, and would come again.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] :)

Tiny portion of karage. There's more sauce than chicken!
    SoCal Foodie M.

Overall: 7/10 Price/Value & Quality: 6/10 Service: 7.5/10 I really wanted to love this spot, it's a charming family-run and owned business, and I'm always eager to support local spots like this. Unfortunately, a few quality control issues held it back from being great. Chicken Karaage: 4/10 This was a big disappointment. The pieces were hard and overly crispy (almost burnt in texture), with very little flavor. For $10, you only get about 5 small pieces--tiny portions that feel stingy compared to what you'd expect. Regardless if they portion by weight no way was it worth $10. It's chicken not lobster. Grinch Roll: 9/10 Absolutely the standout! Fresh, bold flavors with a perfect balance of spice and creaminess. This one was amazing and I'd order it again. Lucia Roll: 7/10 A solid mix of fish with a delicious accompanying sauce that really elevated it. It would've been an easy 8.5/10, but I found a shrimp shell buried in the middle of the roll (not just a visible tail-- an actual hidden shell). That kind of slip-up knocks it down a bit. Salmon Attack: 6/10 The seared salmon was decent, but the roll was overly thick and heavy without much added flavor to justify the size. It felt more filling than flavorful. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The family-run vibe is wonderful, and I appreciate the effort to keep things local.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] However, it seems like the staff is a bit overstretched, which likely led to those quality misses (like the shell in the roll and the overdone karaage). With tax, credit card surcharge, and tip, the total neared $100, pricey for the portion sizes and inconsistencies. Also had to wait over an Hour for takeout. Supporting small businesses is great, but quality needs to match the price.

    Vegan ramen
    Kat C.

I'm not vegan, but I wanted to try this spot as it was highly recommended by my vegan friend. So I took my vegetarian bestie with me and we both loved it. The girls serving us were very sweet, attentive, filling our waters frequently, and being patient with us deciding on what to order. Being our first time there, the menu was a lot to sort through but found it very organized and easy to read. The menu had an abundance of vegan and non vegan options, and we even got complimentary miso soup. We got the Vegan Shoyu Ramen - a clear savory broth, tofu, bokchoy, enoki, another type mushroom, and ginger. Added a side of tempura shrimp for extra protein. The vegan roll Hummingbird - vegan spicy tuna, vegan baby lobster, wrapped with avo topped with spicy sauce - was the shining star! Truly enjoyed everything, even the cute beckoning cat detail on the bowls and plates.

I'm sort of a ramen snob, and we ordered the Tonkotsu and the Black ramen. Both were disappointing.the black ramen has a pork broth like the tonkotsu, but it seemed overly salty, as if the base was primarily soy sauce, and the regular tonkotsu although was a bit smoother still was lacking in flavor. The noodles were chewy and seemed almost as if they used noodles from a Top Ramen package. I'll continue to visit them for sushi on occasion, but that will be my last ramen attempt here.

My hope is that management can use this as constructive feedback to fix some obvious quality control and service issues. Unfortunately, this was one of the most disappointing sushi experiences I've had in the past couple of years. For $22 total ($10 for the standard Tuna Roll and $12 for the standard Eel Roll, not a dragon roll which was I think close to $20 or over), the baseline quality and service just weren't there: * Portions & Value: Both rolls were cut into 5 pieces instead of the standard 8. Paying $22 for a grand total of 10 skimpy pieces is a tough sell on value alone, but the assembly made it worse. The rolls were haphazardly made, falling apart on the plate, and stuffed with minimal fish filling. * Freshness: The fish did not taste fresh and had a strange, off flavor to it--possibly an inventory turnover issue. Freshness is everything at a sushi bar, and having to worry about food safety after a meal is never a good sign. * Kitchen Execution: The $12 Eel roll arrived completely dry without any sauce. The server brought over teriyaki sauce when I had 2 pieces left as if they forgot to put it on. So I drenched the sushi in the sauce to hopefully cover the flavor only to realize he gave me teriyaki sauce for a rice bowl instead of standard unagi/eel sauce. * Management Response: When I brought up to the manager that the eel roll really was not good, she walked back to the kitchen, came back, and simply said, I spoke with the chef and he said it was normal. Bottom Line: Errors happen in restaurants, but brushing off customer feedback, using odd sauce substitutions, and serving loose, dry rolls with questionable fish quality shows a serious need for retraining. Hopefully, management takes a closer look at what's coming out of that kitchen. Look elsewhere in OC for sushi

Great tasting broth without being too salty. Yellowtail Jalapeño Roll was excellent. Had this type of roll at other places, but the one here just tasted more vibrant. Very refreshing with a good amount of spiciness. Akuma Roll was good but was different than I expected. Based on the name I thought it would have a more menacing presentation with a super spicy kick to it, but it was rather tame and too bright in presentation. It has 4 types of fish, avocado, spicy mayo, soy mustard, truffle ponzu sauce, and soy paper. Service seemed efficient as we got our food pretty quickly, despite being busy. From the moment mine companions and I crossed the threshold, we were greeted with warmth and cheer, as though we were cherished guests returning home from a long and weary journey. Upon our departure, the farewells were equally heartfelt, leaving us with the feeling that we had dined not amongst strangers, but amongst dear friends. The atmosphere within was calm and comforting, familiar in a way that soothed the soul. In a world filled with noisy feasting halls and chaotic marketplaces, this establishment stood as a peaceful sanctuary where one might rest and enjoy a most noble meal. The serving folk were nothing short of extraordinary. Attentive without hovering, quick of wit, and brimming with personality, they carried themselves with the sort of genuine hospitality that cannot be taught by any guild or academy. Every interaction felt sincere and full of heart. Now, let us speak of the pan-fried gyoza, for I fear words alone may fail to capture its greatness. These glorious parcels arrived golden and crisp upon the outside, yet tender and delicate within. Each bite tasted as though it had been crafted by hand moments before reaching the table. Were I granted a chest of gold, I would gladly spend it all upon another plate. And lo! The White Peach Seltzer. Good people, I have sampled beverages from many corners of the kingdom, from noble feasts to humble roadside inns, and never in my years have I encountered a seltzer so divine. It was refreshing beyond measure, kissed with the perfect essence of white peach. Had a celestial spring existed in the heavens themselves, I imagine it would taste much the same. Perhaps most admirable of all was the story behind this fine establishment. The keepers spoke of their history and journey with such authenticity and pride that one could not help but feel invested in their success. Nothing felt rehearsed or hollow; their passion was as real as the food upon the table. I departed with a full belly, a joyful heart, and a solemn vow to return many times henceforth. This shall become one of my regular gathering places, and I shall recommend it to all wandering souls seeking comfort, hospitality, and a feast worthy of legend. Five stars. Five crowns. Five royal decrees of approval. "Should destiny guide thee to this ramen house, enter without hesitation. Thy taste buds shall sing songs of victory long after the meal is done."

[Missing noodles, expensive ramen, bad customer service, and no reason to come back.]…read more I visited this restaurant to place a to-go order and picked up my food during a late lunch around 1:40 p.m. I ordered two items, including a bowl of tonkotsu ramen. When I got back to work in Santa Ana and opened my bag around 2:30 p.m., my ramen had NO NOODLES. It was literally just broth and toppings. I called the restaurant expecting a simple apology and a reasonable solution. Instead, the manager would not even speak to me directly and chose to communicate through a waiter the entire time, which made the situation even more frustrating. We went back and forth multiple times with the waiter acting as the middleman. First, they told me I could come back and pick up the missing noodles. That was not realistic. I was already back at work, and it takes me about 25 minutes to get from Fountain Valley to Santa Ana. Driving all the way back for a side of noodles made no sense. So I asked for what seemed like the easiest and most reasonable solution: a complimentary bowl of ramen on my next visit. Instead, I was told no, but they could give me "extra noodles" next time. Extra noodles next time? What exactly was that supposed to do for me when I was sitting there hungry with no actual ramen to eat that day? Then the manager, again through the waiter, said she would personally drive noodles to my job. I even told them that did not make sense because by the time she got there, it would be around 4:30 p.m. At that point, my lunch break would be long over, the ramen would be cold, and all of it would be a waste of my time, her time, restaurant resources, and gas. But I agreed, because at that point it was obvious they really did not want to simply offer me a free bowl of ramen on my next visit. And to be clear, I was not asking for some huge free meal. I was asking to be compensated for the ramen I already paid good money for and did not even receive correctly. For how expensive ramen is, that should not have been a difficult ask. About 10 minutes later, the waiter called back and said the manager would give me a free bowl of ramen next time I came in, which was the exact solution I had suggested from the start. I can only assume she realized how far the drive was and how unnecessary and impractical that solution would have been. Mistakes happen. Forgetting the noodles was one thing. But the way this was handled was unnecessarily difficult, inconvenient, and honestly kind of absurd. I did not ask for a refund. I was looking for an apology and some common-sense customer service. Instead, I got a lot of back-and-forth and a manager who would not even speak to me directly. Kudos to the waiter for doing their best to mediate the situation. Even they thought the situation could of been handled differently by the manager. Very disappointing experience. I will not be returning, and I would not recommend this place to others based on how this situation was handled.

A Legendary Slurp - Gone But Never Forgotten It is a true…read moretragedy for the Orange County food scene that Hakata Ikkousha in Costa Mesa has closed its doors. This wasn't just a "ramen joint"--it was a masterclass in authentic Fukuoka-style soul food. The Broth: Liquid Gold The standout was always their Signature Tonkotsu broth. You could literally taste the 30+ hours of labor that went into it. It had that distinct "frothy" texture (the bubble of the bone marrow) that you only find in high-end Hakata shops. It was rich, creamy, and carried a deep umami funk without ever being overly greasy. The Hits * Black Tonkotsu: The roasted garlic oil (mayu) added a smoky, dark complexity that ruined all other garlic ramens for me. * God Fire: For those who like to sweat, this offered the perfect balance of heat without sacrificing the integrity of the pork flavor. * The Karaage: Genuinely some of the best fried chicken in the area. Massive, juicy thigh meat with a shattering, thin crust and that addictive spicy mayo on the side. * Customization: I loved that they let you pick your noodle firmness. "Hard" was the only way to go to ensure that perfect snap with every bite. The Atmosphere The Costa Mesa location always had a great energy--functional, clean, and unpretentious. The staff were always efficient, greeting everyone with a loud "Irasshaimase!" that made the experience feel truly authentic. It's heartbreaking to see such a high-caliber spot leave the neighborhood. If you were lucky enough to eat here, you know we lost a heavy hitter. To the team at Ikkousha: thank you for the memories and the best bowls in the city. You'll be sorely missed! Note: For those still craving that specific broth, their Torrance locations are still holding it down--definitely worth the drive to keep the dream alive. Come back to OC! !
