The ambiance does not look or feel like you're in an Indian restaurant. There is very little to no Indian representation. It feels sort of like a fancy steakhouse inside. We ordered the samosas, saffron biriyani and saag paneer. The portions were verrrrrry small. I'm used to biriyani in moderate to big portions when ordered at a typical casual sit-down Indian restaurant. But this portion was very small as a side dish would be. And the price was over $20. There was a theme of most things being $24 such as the saag and other popular curry dishes. In my opinion, $24 is a lot for saag paneer. Also, the saag portion was small. We ordered raita with everything as well and we left still hungry and paying way too much for basic dishes. The service was attentive and nice. They even scoop the food on your plate for you which is nice but also makes you feel like a child. Lol. Also, the food isn't good. The restaurant feels like it's used as a social scene. 4++ From the POV of an out of towner, this location felt like it was in a pretty nice and trendy area (Tribeca - I could totally be off base). I mean, this probably was the nicest spot I've ever been to for Indian food. High ceilings, beautiful bar area, nicely decorated tables and space. The vibe here felt upscale and the service felt like it matched that assessment. No pictures of the food here, because it was a work related group dinner and we were with joint venture partners, so didn't want to come off as unprofessional photographing everything, haha. My counterpart at the other company insisted on ordering (she is South Asian/ Indian and I trusted her taste) - I was 100% okay with that and excited. I can't remember everything or the specific names of most of the stuff we got, but two stand outs in my mind - the fish curry and the saag paneer. I mean holy crap - could have been the best fish curry I've had. I actually forgot the name of the restaurant and had to hit up my counterpart for the name because I was thinking of the fish curry. All the food in general was really good and so was the dessert we ordered. I looked at the menu and it looks pretty extensive and a bit on the pricey side, but that's to be expected. If I find myself back in NYC, it would be hard for me not to return specifically for the fish curry. read more

Went here on March 18, 2024 for a 6pm reservation. Location: Very close to the subway-1/2/3/A/C. Interior- Very chic and beautiful inside. They also have nice private outdoor dining options. There are two levels indoors. They have gender neutral restrooms. Service: The service was stellar. Our waiter was Sumit he was very patient with all our questions, informative and nice. All the other staff was equally pleasant from the front door staff to the parties that clear the table. Food: The Kozi Gunter was delicious and very flavorful. The Chicken Taka Tak was delicious as well and not too spicy. Both dishes are saucy so if you're looking for a dry dish then these aren't for you. The garlic naan was very fresh and tasty. Note they bring a mushroom appetizer to the table that has a sauce that contains ricotta cheese. I didn't have it but I was told it was good. Portions are a good size especially if you're eating with rice or naan. Drinks: We had mock tails! I had the cucumber cooler which was a lot sweeter than I had anticipated but it was really good. My friend got the lychee blossom which she said was very good. Dessert: My friend got the bread pudding which she stated was good. It didn't look anything like what I know of bread pudding and it definitely isn't the type of dessert I think would comfortably be for two. I think it is for one person or two people on a first date pretending like they don't really want dessert that much Cost: $126 for the two of us- Two entrees, naan, two mocktails, dessert. My friend chose this spot to catch up while I was visiting NYC. Tamarind is gorgeous throughout with excellent service. For drinks, I ordered a tamarind margarita and my friend had a Monsoon, and a green mocktail. The tamarind flavor in my drink was strong, so I was super happy about that. We were all offered a cheese and tomato based appetizer which was quite delicious. For mains, my friend ordered the nalli gosht with lemon rice, and I ordered the dal makhani with basmati rice. The executive lunch is a fantastic choice. It started with a cheese pakora snack, which was nice and rich. I had kashmiri shahi tikki for the appetizer, which had a nice blend of spices that contrasted well with the sweetness from the vegetables inside. The entree course had a good amount of heat from the pulao and zucchini, creaminess from the methi chaman, and heartiness from the dum aloo. The salad served as a good herbaceous break from the rest of the course. And the fresh baked naan was the perfect accompaniment. The meal ended with the sweet and slightly tart kasoor halwa. We got dinner here the other night. The ambience is impeccable and the decor is very elegant. The service is also outstanding. I got the monsoon cocktail which includes rum and various fruit juices. It had a kick but was sweet and very tropical. The other drinks that were ordered were the ultimate Maharaja and the sunrise in Mumbai. The ultimate Maharaja was made with cardamom infused vodka. The drink was garnished with pieces of cardamom which enhanced the flavor from the aroma of the cardamom. The sunrise in Mumbai was also very tasty. A friend wanted to come here for Restaurant week on the last day this past Sunday. Given that I haven't done a restaurant week jaunt since pre-Covid, I figured why not. Treat yo self. It was a $45 lunch special but this menu consists of an appetizer, 2 entrees, naan bread, rice, side vegetable dish, and a desert. It sounded like an amazing deal. This Indian restaurant I had heard of before and had looked at the menu before out of curiosity and knew beforehand that this is like super expensive fine dining Indian. Nestled on a little street downtown in Tribeca its interesting to check out on the weekend because it was empty on the streets. Which is a warm inviting feeling to me when New York is empty. Anyway, the restaurant had quite a few diners with the same idea in mind. The place is beautiful and modern with unique hanging chandelier lamps. The service was impeccable and we consistently had staff check on us at all the appropriate moments. For the prix fixe we actually ordered the exact same things. Which honestly is funny but I probably wouldn't have picked differently. For starters you're given some kind of vegetable fritter in a spicy green sauce. That wasn't even listed on the menu. It was like an Indian amuse bouche and it was great. Next up the appetizer: Crab Nazakat (crab meat in a coconut milk, garlic, lime juice, curry leaves, and mustard seeds). This was my favorite thing on the menu. It was just very unique and refreshing for the summer. I could eat an entire gallon of this and wash it down with some white wine and be happy as can be. So delicious. Entrees: I picked the Amritsari Machali (Tandoori Salmon in hung yogurt, mustard, ajwain, djion mustard, tandoori spices), and the Lamb Pasanda (Lamb in a cashew sauce, onion, yogurt, cream, garam masala). It came with Biryani rice that tasted of saffron and was truly amazing and a side of some kind of split pea potato curry sauce. Keep in mind, the entrees are combined onto one plate in smaller portions than one would order for a full entree. But it was still really filling. The lamb was tender and delicious but I could have used more of the curry sauce it's coated in. The salmon had a unique flavor and loved the hit of both lemon and sweetness. Everything accompanied each other well. The naan I personally think I would have liked better warm. It was good quality bread and different with little seeds in it. But warm naan is the best. The only miss of the lunch service really was the desert. I have full regrets on not getting the passion fruit panna cotta. The chocolate burfi was a bit odd tasting. It tastes like a very flat, chalky, less sweet millionaire's shortbread. Not bad but just not my cup of tea and I'm a chocolate fanatic. My friend tried the pomegranate lassi. I didn't even know they made lassis in different flavors. I think she said it was okay tasting. All-in-all I felt full to the brim after the restaurant week lunch. It was worth every penny. I don't normally ever seek out fine dining Indian but this was very much so worth it and an interesting exploration into trying new foods. read more

Some of the most flavorful Indian food I have ever had! The restaurant is beautifully decorated, very sleek and deceptively large. As a fine dining restaurant, they had great attention to details including hand towels upon arrival. There is a mocktail menu which we greatly appreciated. This was our first time at Tamarind and we really enjoyed the food - standouts were the Kerala Fish Curry, which had a rich sauce with a good amount of fish, the Masale Wali Machli, in which the halibut was well marinated and cooked, and the wild mushroom and truffle oil naan which was unique and extremely tasty. We enjoyed our meal, the service was amazing and extremely prompt - our water glasses were consistently refilled, and the ambiance was very upscale. I visited Tamarind for the first time with a big group so we got to try a lot of things. The restaurant has a very upscale ambience with a unique upstairs/downstairs layout, and the service is great. The dishes are quite pricey but there were some I liked quite a lot. We were given the option of having a set menu (starting price was $95/person) or ordering a la carte, and we decided to go a la carte, which ended up being ~$70-75 per person with desserts after tax and tip. The dishes I liked in particular were the Tamarind scallops appetizer (perfectly cooked, great flavor, but only 3 scallops for $24), Hara bhara kabab ($17 for some very tasty spinach patties), and the shrimp caldin (~9 tasty shrimps in a green curry for $37). I would definitely get these again. I wouldn't recommend the malai halibut ($40), though it was the winner of the 2004 USA fish dish awards. It was a bit dry and took a long time to make. It had good flavor and a nice smokiness otherwise. I also thought the chicken in the chicken tikka masala was almost inedibly tough and dry. Everything else we had was good, though nothing in particular stood out to me other than the above. We also tried a lot of the desserts. The desserts came in large portion sizes/more dramatic plating than we expected. Overall they were pretty good but I wouldn't say anything was a must get. Honestly I would've been happy with a mango lassi but I balked at the drink prices. Overall I'm glad I got to try this upscale Indian restaurant -- it was quite the experience! Walked into this place on a Sunday, and mind you it was Mother's Day. Noobest mistake of all. Had to walk over to a different place that night. However, I made a reservation the very next day and finally dined at Tamarind! The ambience was quite nice- dim lighting, fancy artwork and waitstaff effortlessly meandering through. To start the meal, we got a Palak Chaat and a Chili Crab. The first appetizer was interesting- crispy spinach layered with yogurt, mint, tomatoes and tamarind chutney. It had a sweeter tone but I liked the combinations a lot. The Chili Crab was heavenly. It's the best crab I've ever tasted in my life. The shredded meat is served on a layer of a classic Indian tamarind based sauce. Highly recommend getting this. Then we got a Vegetable Jalfrezi and a Punjabi Mutton. I found these entrees to be good, but they weren't particularly remarkable. And PSA, the lamb is bone-in. For dessert, we shared a plate of the Gajrela. It's a carrot pudding served with ice cream on the side. This was very good and ended our meal on a tantalizing note. 8/10 would go back again read more

Tamarind has been on my list for a long time, it's one of the few Michelin star Indian restaurants around. The restaurant itself is beautiful and very clean. Our host seated us in the back of the restaurant with all the other Indian people and next to the bathroom! We tried to see if they would give us another seat and they said they were already reserved. Not too long after a private party came in, full of loud children. I was told they had a no children policy, guess not. Our server was nice, gave us some good recommendations, which we went with. For our appetizers we went with the crab and an off the menu shrimp dish. The crab and shrimp were good, well flavored and not spicy. For our entrees, we got the lamb chops, shrimp in a coconut green curry, tamarind chicken, chicken tikka naan, and tamarind rice. The lamb chops were delicious! Perfectly cooked and full of flavor. Probably one of the best I've had in a while. The shrimp lacked flavor, and the portion size was small. The tamarind chicken had a weird texture and hard to finish. The tamarind rice was odd. The chicken tikka naan was cool, it was nice to eat on its own. I still had hope, so I decided to order desert. We ended up getting the mango cheesecake which was really good. The cardamom crème brûlée, was okay; they didn't melt the sugar on top properly. Lastly, a coconut cake bomb thing , which lacked coconut flavor and had no chocolate. I'm not a professional foodie, but I expect a certain level of service and an experience when I go to a Michelin star restaurant, because that's what im paying for. The service here is amazing and the staff really ensures that everything you have is perfect and that you are well taken care of. Every time I have been, the food has been wonderful. The last time I went, I did the tasting menu and it was perfect for a big group and we got to choose between a couple different menus. I dined at this restaurant about two years ago with my son and so decided to check out their Executive Lunch today by myself. A little reluctant at first I was thrilled that I did. Lunch is rather quiet but the ambience and service is very good. The lunch is reasonably priced at $35 and includes an appetizer, two entree choices that come with seasonal vegetables, rice and naan, and a dessert. The complimentary Aloo Tikki appetizer (if I have that correctly) was a wonderful potato 'tart' with a lively cilantro pepper sauce. The salmon was moist and the mustard greens (my two entree selections) were wonderful. The seasonal vegetables and rice were bland but nicely presented. The naan was perfect. The creamy dessert with shredded filo and pistachos was a nice ending. I would have had coffee with the dessert but the one delay in service was that I was not asked before or when the dessert was served. A faux pas for sure. WOW! Truly the best Indian food I've ever had - I can't believe I haven't been here before. Loved the little complimentary cheese puff appetizer with sauce to start. We got a bunch of things for the table but my ABSOLUTE favorite was the crispy spinach appetizer - it was actually everyone's favorite at the table which was somewhat surprising for being spinach - but the flavor was insane. A MUST get!! The samosas were also delicious - perfectly soft inside with a crispy outside. The prawns were a must as well! The mushroom and truffle oil naan was also unique and yummy. Meh! Would skip this joint. I guess I sadly missed their Michelin star days. Lunch -tried Restaurant Week menu.Ok standard trying to be upscale decor. Service a little too speedy for "fresh " food but standard . for almost $50 it was a good portion of three courses (plus naan, extra veggie ,rice)based on the regular high prices for the menu. Cocktails seemed inventive -mine was too sweet but strong and generous portion for your typical $20 plus manhattan pricing . Wine list seemed excessive in pricing but not out of range for many Manhattan places. Nothing finesse or amazing for my taste buds. Except the main menu seems to feature specialities from many regions of India. The best was the lobster masala and yogurt kebab. desserts were horrid- inedible . Can't tell if this is one of these restaurants whose restaurant week dining is sub par compared to standard. Tamarind used to be good and truly the staple for Indian food in nyc. But the food is now no longer good compared to your neighborhood Indian joint. Frankly, I think your hood's Indian place can do MUCH MUCH better. We paid about $160 per person with drinks, and the food was absolutely AWFUL. I walked out of it wanting to puke the food out. Sea bass: oh boy! That fish was ROTTEN for sure. I never paid $40 for a rotten fish in Tribeca. It was certainly an eye opener. The waiter came back and said that another table also had sea bass, and didn't complain. But I can assure you that fish is 100% sure that fish is ROTTEN, trust me. Look.. We did pay for the fish after all. This dish definitely is not settling in my stomach right! Lamb chops and lamb appetizer: Way too overcooked, tough, and the spice is just super boring. I feel like you can do better simply dumping whatever you have in your spice rack. Chicken Tikka masala: my god, can I say that's the most disappointing dish? The best spot for authentic saag paneer! The restaurant is a two level, massive space for indoor seating and very well made outdoor cabins. The experience was phenomenal and the staff was very knowledgable and friendly. Food- wild mushroom and truffle naan was mediocre (it was just pieces of mushroom on the naan drizzled with truffle oil). The saag paneer was very delicious and that's not my go-to vegetarian entree typically so I was pleasantly surprised. I DREAM about their Malai Naan. You HAVE to get that no matter what. I love Indian food pretty much at any time of day so upon visiting Tamarind in Tribeca I was already looking forward to it. I had the executive lunch, a $33 pre-fixe menu with an appetizer, two small entrées, and a dessert. It is a pretty good deal considering how much food you get and the quality. I received a complimentary samosa which was perfect as well as the chutney it was served in. I ordered chicken as an appetizer. The portion was enough for one and the meat was very flavorful and seasoned, topped with a flower for flair. For my entrées I ordered the Gatari Mutton lamb cubes and the Machi Che Kalvan Tandoori seasonal fish filet. The lamb had an excellent flavor with some crunch to it. In India, goat is actually more common than lamb, so lamb is a delicacy. The fish was a white fish, crispy on the outside and only a little bit over cooked on the inside. For dessert I got the Mango Shrikhand, Alphonso mango flavor strained yogurt, something I've never tried before. It was very sweet, with a less gritty texture than I was expecting, plenty enough to satisfy a sweet craving after the main course. We appreciated how she assisted with recommendation and went through the specials for the day. She checked in to make sure everything was great. Very professional and delightful. Food: For appetizer we got Murg Malai Kabab and Malai Naan. They were both good but we were expecting the murg malai kabob to be a little more spicier but definitely had flavor. For dinner we ordered murgh lajawab and makhani khum which were both very delicious and not as heavy as most curries are which we appreciated. Of course the classic garlic naan. For dessert we got the gajrela and cardmom creme brûlée. We definitely enjoyed the gajrela as it was perfect combination of warm gajar nu halwa with some ice cream and it wasn't overly sweet. My friend found the gajrela "mind blasting" for those of who get a laugh out of that. You're welcome! We didn't like creme brûlée much but could be possible we just aren't big fans of that dessert in general. Drinks: the ginger sunrise, moonson, tamarind margarita and only cabernet available for a glass. Personally the tamarind margarita had a little bit too much of a kick for my taste buds and the waitress was very nice to switch it for me. The ginger sunrise if your into gingery drinks and moonson were both good . Ambiance is nice and you truly feel like you are getting great service. They even come and clean off drops of curry that may have fallen on table cloth. You got new plates and utensils after each meal. They were nice and warm too. The only thing I didn't understand is the point on the silver plates that are there when seated but then taken away and not used. What the purpose of it?!??! Also the owner? or the person overseeing the restaurant came around and checked to see if we needed anything which was very nice. They also do have outdoor booth seating available for people interested. For people who are looking for spicy indian food, I don't think this is the place although it is still flavorful. We went to Tamarind on a Saturday night. It was only 5:30 so it was still really quiet in the restaurant, as expected for an early dinner time. Our servers were very attentive and were constantly filling our waters, checking on us, etc. They were knowledgeable about dietary restrictions and were able to provide information on gluten free options (most of the menu!) The food was delicious! We tried the chili crab appetizer, chicken tikka masala, the tandoori mixed grill, and saag paneer. The Saag paneer and chili crab appetizer in particular were both amazing! We would recommend both of these. Additionally, the tamarind rice and spinach and garlic rice were delicious. None of the curries come with rice so these were great to pair. We forgot to ask about spice levels, and everything was super mild. We wished we would have asked for spice! So note, if you even like a little spice, you may want to bring it up to your server. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because the restaurant felt a little stuffy and it did not have a very fun ambience. Great place to take older folks and have peace and quiet, but not a very fun vibe. read more
