This is a takeout review, I came across it on Yelp and wanted to try it, and was glad I did. It was quite busy on the Sunday afternoon and gave cozy vibes. The flavors are balanced and tasted home cooked instead of overwhelming, which was really nice. The aloo gobi is my usual go to order at other restaurants and I really enjoyed it here. It was fresh with soft flavorful potatoes, perfectly paired with the rice. The lamb was hot and fall-off the bone tender. We dipped the smoky paneer in the lamb madras and thought it was perfect. There was a lot of food and we even had some left overs for another meal. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area. read more

I love India food in general and I thought I've gone to many this far but this place had many menu items I had never seen before. And they all exceeded my expectations, opened my mind to trying new things more. The highlight of the meal was the Murgh Shakootee. GET IT. TRUST ME it's SO GOOD. The juicy chicken in this very well balanced spice with a hit of coconut in the sauce, I couldn't believe had never had this before. I also got the Goat Biryanis, which came with the perfect presentation and beautiful flavor of the meat, which often lacks when cooked separately from the rice, but not this place. It is a very clean and beautiful restaurant with nice music in the back (not loud at all). And the staff was very helpful and nice. He made sure that he got our order correct multiple times and helped us decide which naan to get or if the food seemed enough. Got my usual as always, palak paneer, and this one was pretty good. Usually the ones fully blended smooth I know are gonna hit the spot. This one had a great heat to it and the pieces of paneer were pretty large. Garlic naan was large and fluffy which I appreciate but pretty steep price ($7!) for just bread. read more

Not to worry because Sahib was more than welcoming and our food here was fabulous. The Mixed grill platter was one of our favorite dishes that we had at Sahib and it gives you a nice variety of all the various items that they have their tandoori treats. And of course we couldn't have our platter without having wonderful garlic naan bread. And we also had to have Mixed Vegetable Pakora and Samosas. Yelp steered us towards Sahib in Curry Hill, and it was really a smash hit. We visited back in December and had a fantastic dinner. The appetizer of the paneer ke sooley ($13.49) was a splendid way to start the meal. Smoked paneer cheese? Sign me up. The lamb rogan josh ($21.95) and the chicken bhuna ($18.95) were full of flavor and were hearty and warmed us up on a freezing night. Sahib offers a zillion options and therefore definitely should have dishes that float your boat. The decor was on the minimal side but very classy. The service was also as stellar as the food. It's not all that often that you feel like the employees actually genuinely care about your dining experience. They were attentive without hovering and made sure we were enjoying the food and the meal overall. They also didn't shoo us out even though they were about to close, oops. Some of the best Indian food I've had in the city. When they say spicy, it's truly spicy. You have to try the chicken 65, it was delicious. I didn't eat in, but the restaurant looks like it is a solid place to dine in. And our food was made quickly but also with care, so I'm sure the service is just as good as their food! read more

My husband and I are in town for the weekend and knew we needed to get our fill of Indian food. I found this place on a list of Eater's best NYC Indian spots. We arrived around 1230pm on a Sunday. The place itself is relatively small--maybe 30 or so seats. There was plenty of space when we arrived. There are a ton of $15-16 lunch specials that come with your choice of entree (we got the lamb Rogan Josh and butter chicken). dal, rice, a dessert, an order of naan AND an order of samosas. Everything here is good quality and affordable! Nothing on the menu is sooo crazy - like very Standard north indian fare. The apps of papdi chaat and samosa chaat were pretty fine; maybe wouldn't order it again necessarily, but passable. Fantastic Indian dish options at Sahib. We sat down for dinner and were served some complimentary papadum with a tamarind and green chili sauce. I started off with masala chai. Yes, while this should be served at the end of the meal, it was a cold day. I also ordered the Mung Dal Soup. Our waiter served the soup and recommended I eat that first and to not let it get cold. He offered to reheat my chai if I couldn't get to it before it cooled off. Having spent time in South India, I'm always looking for a tasty yellow dal. This Mung Dal Soup was it. The masala chai had layers of spice with cardamom and ginger. This is made with the traditional full fat milk. As it cools, a skin forms on the top displaying the dark coloring of the spicy tea. The puri is always a fun and surprising bread. My table-mates were surprised by the size of this light and airy puff. When you break it apart the soft slightly layered bread is perfect for soaking up with saucy dishes and sweet tamarind sauce. Based on our waiter's suggestion we went with both the coconut and lemon rice. Both were fragrant and loaded with seasoning. I absolutely loved this rice and could eat it just by itself. I ordered the Mutter Paneer Methi which was creamy and rich. The whole table enjoyed this. We also had the Marchwagan goat curry. This was in a heavy rich sauce and the meat was tender. I'd recommend this if you like a heavy and sweet dish. The last bite was the Kashmiri naan. This is stuffed with a reddish pink fruit paste as well as nuts. The naan tastes like a dessert and was a perfect conclusion to our feast. Three of us had enough food for leftovers for meals the next day. I look forward to going coming back. While in Curry Hill as tourists, we wanted to try a variety of Indian dishes so we decided to try an Indian buffet / AYCE. However despite several reviews on Google/ Yelp that said these places were buffet-style, they weren't so I suggest calling ahead of time to confirm if they changed their dining style recently. So we decided to stay here and dine because we were all hungry. We were sat down and got some help, however when we were ready to order, we had to wait a while and it didn't seem like they were busy as there were only two other customers. When we ordered, I expected my order of Chicken Tikka Masala to come with rice/naan when the waiter asked if I wanted that on the side so I said yes. He did not clarify that it was an extra charge so it felt a dishonest to see that show up on our receipt later. I prefer to be aware of what I'm paying for. Having hidden surprises does ruin an honest enjoyable dining experience for me. They also labeled themselves as "fine dining" however they didn't take our coats and etc. and I did not get the fine dining feel personally except that the food was spectacular. Food-wise though, everything was delicious as the texture and taste was just right. The paneer tikka masala and malai kofta were unlike others I've tried in the city in a good way. I'm always curious when I see different types of naans on a menu so decided to give both the onion chili naan and jalapeno cheese one a try. Though the naans were good I wish they arrived hotter to complement the dishes better. Each had a kick to it so just a heads up if pairing with a spicy dish. Another great Curry Hill spot. We Kips Bay residents are really spoiled! When your mouth is on fire and your first instinct is to thank the chef for it, you know you've ordered well. The chilies in the murgh shakootee (chicken with roasted chilies, ginger and garlic paste, poppy seeds, spices, and coconut sauce) are palpable but pleasant, and the spice blend is addictive -- the cinnamon in particular really comes through. The chicken is juicy and tender. I didn't love the daab chingri (prawns in coconut sauce, green chilis, ginger juice, curry leaves, and mustard seed) quite as much. Overall, the curry was a bit too salty for my liking. My dining companion liked it, though. The garlic naan was excellent: buttery with just the right amount of crispness. It was so good I felt like eating it without any curry to dilute its delicate flavors. We enjoyed the complementary chapati, served with the standard tamarind and green chutneys. We were in a big group and some of us did regular entrees and some did lunch specials. The matar paneer (cheese and peas in a thick sauce) is great, but I do wish they gave more paneer. Their achari bhindi (dry fried okra with onions and peppers) is also really good, however I do think they use too many bell peppers which makes this dish pretty bitter. I would definitely ask for less or no bell peppers. The garlic naan is decent - nothing to be amazed at. And the rice is also good - we'll seasoned and simple. We live in Chelsea and do not have a lot of Indian restaurants nearby so we decided to give Sahib a try. The food was fine. Ordered the paneer, tikka masala, lamb korma, and naan. I loved the Punjabi chicken especially! I'd say the only thing that slightly holds this place back is that it seems to be more focused on lunch buffet. The sit down scene was very empty, and hence a little awkward as there were like 4 people in total sitting in a rather large interior. Good Indian food but not the best! Dhaba which is another Indian restaurant on Murray (Curry) Hill right beside it takes the cake over this one. The service is great and food is fresh but the intensity of flavors a little subdued to possibly cater to a milder- palette. Everything we ordered was pretty ordinary however their Aloo Tikki Chaat was a tad-bit over-salted and less crispy than I'd like for it to be. Loved the complimentary Shot of Yellow Lentils they served which is otherwise most often served as a staple side dish or curry substitute in many Indian, Middle Eastern and African households. Liked Sahib but not loved it and because I am Indian myself so this could be me being overly critical about this spot with respect to the toned down flavors.
