I finally made it over to try what they are calling Filipino fusion and I walked away so impressed. My hubby and I ordered their Güd Burger, Kare Kare bowl and churro to share. This might honestly be my favorite meal. Even if it's quite a drive from San Diego, it was well worth it in my opinion. The Güd Burger completely lived up to the hype. The double Wagyu patties were juicy and full of flavor, the cheese was perfectly melty, and the sweet chili aioli brought everything together. I wasn't sure what to expect from the ube brioche bun, but it added just a hint of sweetness that somehow made the whole burger even better. Nothing overpowered anything else. It all just worked together. The Kare Kare bowl was generous in the Kare Kare, which I appreciated. The physical bowl felt too small compared to the amount they gave us! I'm glad I was sharing this with someone else because I was already full halfway through the bowl. We had to order the ube churros as well...don't skip this! The dipping sauce it came with was so good. I kept dipping my churro into it too because it was that good. The churro was crunchy without being dry. This whole meal was one of those meals where you don't want it to end. It was my first time here and we waited 45 minutes for our food to be ready because of how busy it was. Some people ordered ahead of time so they skipped the wait altogether. The restaurant itself is quite small but we were lucky enough to snag a seat after rush hour. There are less than 10 tables for eating in. Restaurants like this are worth supporting because you know it's a small business and the food tastes like it's made out of love! So, a few months ago I wanted to try Tambayan because I'd heard so many good things about the place. My friend and I showed up at opening at 11am. They weren't open. We waited about 30 min and they still didn't open. While we waited I tried calling them and it went to voicemail and I couldn't even leave a message because their mailbox was full. Today, I went hoping they'd be open. I arrived around 11:05am and surprisingly they were open. I walked in and looked at their overhead menu on the wall and practically their entire menu had masking taste indicating the item or items were "sold out". This was at opening! Something tells me the "sold out" masking tape had been there for quite a while. I left once again highly disappointed. Maybe down the road I'll give them another shot and revise this 1 star rating. Multiple trips over the years. All items are bangin! Hot Honey Chili Garlic Bowl is pure fire. Crispy chicken drizzled with hot honey chili and garlic bits taking these flavors on a journey. Pickled onions and Korean cucumbers give you delicious change for your pallette, all on a bed of rice. The GUD Burger was a beefy, cheesy, greasy, tangy ride. I've been seeing videos of this popping up on my tik tok so I ended up trying it one of the days. The drive was pretty far since it's close to spring valley. There was plenty of parking in the plaza that it was located in luckily. I got the fried chicken burger, ube churros and the crispy pork belly. The burger was pretty good and had some sweet heat to it due to the sauce. The crispy chicken patty inside was very flavorful and crispy. The chicken pork belly was my least favorite it was kind of hard and too fatty. The ube churro with glazed dip was delicious! We ordered the beef short rib bowl on garlic rice with a side of pickled cucumber, the chicken bowl on rice, and a macaroni salad. We loved both bowls equally. The beef ribs had a delicious, sweet/soy flavor (but different then teriyaki). The beef riblets were extremely juicy and tender, with a nice char (scored 5 out of 5)! They are known for their güd burger and rightfully so- it's beefy, cheesy melt-in-your-mouth goodness with the delicious uber milk bun and had I just grabbed this to go and ate it in my car this review would be a solid five golden stars. The sisig fries on the menu say they're made with waffle fries but we got regular fries that tasted more on the stale side. The pork belly seemed doubly fried and was very dry, with the fatty bits sticking to the back of your teeth. The sauce and flavor profile of this was good and this dish could be a knockout if those two ingredients were improved upon. We dined in, and I have to say this establishment needs a deep cleaning. There are darkened grease stains on the curtains/doors/etc which have been handled repeatedly. We watched the staff wash their hands by lightly dribbling their fingertips in water then handling food. Tambayan is that place. The vibe is casual. Wutang Clan played overhead when my wife and I were there. Indoor seating is available but not too many. Peek lunch times this place can be busy with no where to sit. We were lucky to snag the last table. I would say it fits fourteen customers max. Service is good. We were greeted coming in and didn't wait forever to eat. I had the longanisa sausage and short ribs over rice. My sides were macaroni salad and two lumpias. Sweet and sour sauce plus a vinegar sauce to complement the meal. The wife had chicken skewers and a side rice. Everything was on point with big flavors. A very satisfying meal with leftovers to spare. Tambayan was a great alternative for lunch. Food is really good and at a fair price. Place is busy so other people think so too. The rice bowl dishes are way over-seasoned, like an explosion of competing flavors crammed into a single bowl (you're gonna wish you had an extra order of plain white rice). The service is a disaster (2/5), the gangster rap they always play in the dining area is definitely not fit for anyone under the age of 18. But the worst is walking in there at 12:15pm (lunch hour) on a Saturday and being told "we're not taking any orders for around 20-25 minutes." Really? You don't serve lunch? All the dishes we ordered were delicious! For appetizers, we had Lechon Kawali skewers- it's super tender and the skin is very crunchy. It's not salty, and we're given different kinds of sauces to dip into. The Kare- Kare bowl with beef short rib was also great. The eggplants and short ribs were grilled to perfection. So glad we got to try this spot. It's kind of a hole in the wall but the food was excellent. The burger was just as sloppy and cheesy as I needed and the ube gives it a unique sweetness to the bun. The dish fries were massive and the pork belly was excellent. The chicken lumpia was way more flavorful than we expected. All the the bowls were flavorful and big portions too!
