Love the ambiance! As soon as you walk in there is a viewing window where you can watch them making noodles. There's lanterns on the ceiling, black and white anime comics as wall paper. Down to the stone chop stick rest. This place is definitely aesthetically pleasing. There are only seats 12 people at a time so make reservations! Miso soup and edamame to start- both good. The grilled miso salmon was delicious! I got the Dinner for 2, crunchy spicy tuna roll, crunchy spicy salmon roll, dragon roll, crunchy spicy yellowtail (my husband and I) Breakout star: crunchy spicy yellowtail maki- I could have ordered 20 of those and been a happy camper. Small, chill restaurant. The veggie maki combo came with miso soup (or soda). It's a good spot when you want something fresh and don't need to rush through your day. I used to love Tampopo; their sushi used to be on par with some of the better UWS/Ues spots, and it felt like a hidden gem in the Heights. Unfortunately, I can't recommend it anymore. I ordered the omakase as a personal treat to celebrate a milestone, especially since the delivery listing showed uni. I love uni, so it felt like a good opportunity to splurge. Maybe ordering later in the evening was my mistake, but the sushi arrived warm, not fresh warm, but room temperature, and had a noticeably fishy smell. I managed about three pieces before feeling nauseous. The rice was overpacked, the fish quality was off, and the uni in particular was overwhelmingly fishy to the point I had to spit it out. For $82, this didn't come close to other budget omakase options in the city. It felt more like a rushed, low-quality lunch set than anything resembling a premium experience. I ended up feeling sick later that night, which has never happened to me with sushi before. Based on this experience, I wouldn't return or recommend it. read more

I have reviewed this most reliable and rare spot for Japanese food when it opened and continue to enjoy its food. Unfortunately they use the awful app TOAST if you want to order directly online. After using Toast to order from Tampopo and Yumi Thai a few times, I started having my listed card charged for orders I did not place. Toast did not help me, their customer service is horrendous and they seem to count on impunity. So now I only order from Tampopo by phone. Toast is also dishonest about discount coupons. I received multiple coupons for Tampopo and they were NEVER accepted. read more

While looking for somewhere to grab a bite to eat I stopped at Tampopo kitchen. I was sat at their sushi bar and I enjoyed their delicious white sangria while I waited for my order. It was pretty hard to decide what to eat because everything on the menu looked pretty good. I tried the purple sweet potato tempura roll and the crunchy spicy tuna maki, both were excellent. I've eaten here about ten times since they opened. It's usually fine. Just fine. Not mind blowing or anything. Today I went there for lunch and had the beef udon noodle lunch special. I also ordered edamame and unsweetened iced tea. I very rarely review any establishment negatively. I actually don't think I ever have before. I have been on the toilet since about an hour after I finished eating there. I have now gone 5 times in the last two hours. I can't help but think this was somehow intentional. I don't understand what I did to upset anyone enough to tamper with my food. I had my AirPods on and sat alone at the bar reading and responding to work emails. I was polite to the waiter and gave a 20% tip. I WILL NEVER RETURN TO THIS ESTABLISHMENT AGAIN. Before anyone thinks it was something else that caused this, I normally don't eat out and make all my own meals. Since I fast until lunch everyday, I hadn't eaten anything yet that day. This place was pretty good and may have received five stars if not for the reservation issues we had. I called ahead and made reservations for four, specifically requesting a table, and even changed the time we had planned to eat to guarantee table seating, but when we showed up, the only table in the restaurant was already taken and only halfway through their service so our group had to sit at the bar. For food, I had the tan tan ramen, the house sake, and the shrimp dumplings. All of them were solid. I also tried the shrimp tempura which I thought were some of the best I've had. The udon with tempura is delicious and very satisfying, kind of a comfort food. The kitchen staff is very industrious, making sushi while you watch. The generous shots of saki make it warm and friendly. As far as service goes, the waitstaff disappears for such long stretches, they have afforded me the luxury of writing my thoughts uninterrupted, right here at my table. You would think, with a waitstaff of two people, they could take care of three customers, but they keep themselves occupied elsewhere (like by the kitchen looking at their iPhones). The dining room is tiny, and yet the waitstaff seems focused only on takeout orders (on the computer screen). I wish they would glance around the room to see if they are needed. There seems to be a big divide between the customers and the employees. Ambience? That is a peculiar thing in this dining room. Although the decor suggests Japan, the music tends to be pulsating rock 'n' roll, which takes away any chance of a romantic or leisurely dinner. The music makes me want to rush and get out of there. I take earplugs with me in case it's too loud. The seats are substantial and comfortable, even at the counter. So my unsolicited suggestion is to always have a waitperson in the room, and if you have to play background music, keep it in the background, and maybe choose some relaxing Asian music. read more

I normally order from Tampopo on Bennett, and when this location opened I was so happy. The Kake Udon I ordered was skimpy, and didn't include the additional items (egg) that I ordered, and the added mushrooms ($5) were nearly non-existent. By the time I realized this, I was already home. I want to go back, but I don't know if I want to spend another $20 on what was basically a bowl of udon with some mushroom flavoring. I give it 3 stars because it was still flavorful and delicious, so kudos to the kitchen staff. It just doesn't seem worth the price. Update: Changing my review to 4 stars. We do a lot of--pretty bad--cooking at home so when we eat out or order in it's got to be good. So far have ordered from Tampopo Kitchen 3 or 4 times; not more due to high pricing which seems to have been reduced since my first orders. Even still I was happy to splurge when the prices were higher because the food is on a whole other level. The sushi is the most fresh and delicious I've ever had. Tempura well done, the sauce delicious. My son loved the Wagu beef. This was my first time eating Chicken Kake. It was good but I couldn't say how it holds up against others. I always crave Japanese western dishes (eg napolitan spaghetti etc) and the miso carbonara really hit the spot. I really wanted to love the food but the spicy tuna and spicy salmon that I ordered was wayyy heavy on the Mayo. So much so, that when I went to pick up the rolls with my chopstick, the roll squeezed so much all the filling came out. Not really flavorful of anything and just generally disappointing...
