First time diner but definitely will not be my last. We arrived on Saturday right before the afternoon rush. We ordered a few appetizers and Ramen bowls. Their Yuzu green lemonade is such a palette cleanse. My favorite appetizers were the Purple yam fries with this banging sauce in the side. The fried shumai were big and full of flavor. The Tuna ceviche I had as my entree with two sides of wonton chips sooooo tasty. Katsu was my least favorite no flavor profile at all. I came here for dinner and it was an unpleasant experience. So it was three of us and we ordered ramens. First the waiter was not very helpful he rushed us and didn't help us when we ordered the food. So I ordered the ramen and it was lukewarm almost room temperature, so with ramen you can see when it is not hot enough because the fat is on the soup. So I returned my soup for them to make it hotter. Then my friend's soup was also cold and he didn't want to heat it up and when he did it was still cold. Ramen should always be hot to be enjoyed properly. We also ordered bao buns and the boa buns texture was off; bao buns should be soft and pillowy. These bao buns were dry and flat. It was also cold and not appetizing. I would definitely not come back here, the last time I came years ago it was really good. So I am unsure of what happened but it is disappointing because there is not alot of ramen options in Harlem. We happen to be walking by and just walked in and we are so glad we did. It's a nice and cozy small spot rich with its beautiful history of how they came about making their mark in the food industry. The food are decent sized portions & the drinks were good. The Japanese curry was very delicious. We originally walked in this area craving a former Japanese curry spot that closed down but found this place and they did not disappoint. Everything was very tasty and you could tell it was made with love and care. Both of us were unfamiliar with West Harlem and we ended up coming to Jin Ramen, a ramen spot recommended in Michelin Bib Gourmand. They have an extensive menu with all types of ramen and brothless ramen. Overall it's a good ramen spot and worth a try if you're near one of their three locations in the city. The kuro tonkotsu features a rich broth packed with black garlic oil aroma. The grilled cha shu was smoky and perfectly glazed with sweet sauce. The soft-boiled egg was cooked to perfection. They used thin noodles which held the soup pretty well. My friend ordered their signature spicy tonkotsu. The broth was quite spicy in Japanese food standard, but not overbearing. A nice option if you want to spice up your ramen. You can get a complimentary yuzu drink if you order an entree. I ordered the Spicy Tonkatsu ramen, which had broth with the perfect level of spice. Although it was starting to get hot out, the broth hit the spot. The noodles were al dente and chewy, but they didn't particularly stand out to me. We were also given complimentary yuzu green tea -- although I might had misremembered the exact drink. The drink was refreshing, both tart and sweet. I also tried the bacon okonomiyaki, which was honestly my favorite part of the meal. All the flavors just worked so well together, and I kept wanting more. I would go back for just the okonomiyaki alone! The decor was very vibey, tying into the wooden furniture and walls. Stopped in here for a lunch break while on a 20 mile hike through NYC. This place was the perfect spot to break for an extremely filling lunch and pick me up. The food was served hot and fresh. The employees were kind, but did forget to bring our sauces - no worries it happens. The place was empty for a Sunday, there was lots of seating. I must say the lunch special is a great deal - you should definitely try it. The prices were more than fair. The space is small but can has many small tables and the ambiance is cool with dim lighting and different photos and even action figure pieces on the walls. We got the veggie gyozas and karaage to start which left a lot to be desired, to put it simply the food lacked flavor :/ as our time there went on and we waited for our main dish, ramen, our waiter barely attended us and we had to flag him down several times to ask for more water, napkins and drinks. Even when my friend returned her drink bc she didn't like it after just one sip, the waiter rolled his eyes and gave us such a deep sigh, we found the interaction very rude as if we had insulted him directly. Finally our ramen came out. I got the shrimp ramen and my friend the chimi ramen. It was much more flavorful than the appetizers but nothing very special. The consensus: we've had better elsewhere. Came here for dinner in a Sunday in a group of 3 at around 7:15pm. We did not have a reservation but were seated right away since the place wasn't too busy. There is plenty of seating in the front but also extra tables in the back/side area. Our server was very nice and attentive of our table. Our food was ready pretty quickly after arrival. We tried: - Chicken Nanban Buns: the buns were soft but they were cold. The chicken filling was a little bit warmer but it just tasted sweet without too much more dimension. The cabbage salad on the side was pretty bitter. Would not order again. - Shoyu Ramen: I've had very good ramen since I'm from the West Coast and had high expectations for this place but they definitely fell short. Even though the noodles were really well cooked and had a nice texture/thickness, the broth was way too salty and did not have any other flavor to it since it was so overpowering. The portion of pork that it came with was also significantly smaller than what I'm used to. The half boiled egg was good and added some balance to the ramen but again it wasn't enough to overcome the saltiness of the shoyu based broth. - Japanese Curry Ramen: my boyfriend ordered this and he thought it was good! I tried it and I agree that it was pretty good! I loved the curly noodles and how well cooked they were. The sweetness of the curry with all the spices was very nice. There was also a nice umami kick from the Parmesan cheese and some acidity from the lemon. The chicken katsu portion was generous and flavorful with a good crisp to it. If I came back here this is probably what I would order instead. - Tonkotsu Ramen: my mom tried this and she really enjoyed it. She is a big ramen fan and said the portion was generous. She was particularly fond of the thinner ramen noodles here. She said the broth wasn't too greasy but also said that the pork portion was small. However she really liked it in general. Overall, even though the ambiance and service were great, I was a little disappointed by the food I ordered. I think if you are craving ramen there are some dishes here that are good but it doesn't seem to be good across the board and might be more hit or miss. The baos were pretty good, just a little sloppy which made it difficult to eat. What disappointed me was the ramen. It didn't taste like the tonkotsu that I remembered; it wasn't rich in umami and thick, characteristic of tonkotsu. It was quite thin, and darker in color. It also tasted strongly of ginger and soy. I was so confused I thought perhaps we got the wrong order but it was not. The service was my least favorite part of the meal. Our glasses were never refilled; the server disappeared for so long that we waited over 40 mins before we could ask for our check. To this day I'm confused where he went. I appreciated the good amount of scallions on top of the ramen. The menma was subpar. It tasted off, almost like it came straight out of the can. The portion size is very filling. I have been coming to Jin Ramen for years! I have never had a bad experience. The staff is always friendly even if all you are doing is ordering take out. I love their different ramens. My favorite is the Kuro Tonkotsu. The black garlic oil and the creamy broth is delicious. I'm not really a fan of pork buns but I do enjoy their Chicken Nan buns. The service and ambiance of the place was fine and they put up these barriers between the seats indoors which is great. They also actually check for ID and COVID vaccination card unlike many places in NYC. We tried their karaage, Tonkotsu ramen, and Shio ramen. The karaage was slightly dry but flavor was good and the dipping sauce added a nice touch. Unfortunately, both ramens were disappointing. The Tonkotsu broth was a little lighter than what we were used to and the noodles were soggy. There really wasn't much depth of flavor in the broth. The Shio ramen, despite being a chicken broth, had absolutely no flavor other than salt and I could barely tell it was a chicken broth. Both times I went with the eggplant soba noodles and savored every bite of noodle with eggplant. The soba broth is perfect and I did not hesitate to drink the remainder. I get to Jin and I am greeted, I use greeted very lightly, by a young hostess/ waiter. He explains to us in a very very low tone why we can't be seated right away because of social distancing guidelines. I could not hear him as he was very soft spoken, I ask him to speak up he proceeds to roll his eyes and I said you know what nevermind. We wait maybe 5-10 mins and we are seated right after someone gets up. The vibe was kind of off as I kept observing and sitting there. I honestly don't know what the issue was because I was giving the "greeting" the benefit of the doubt. (I'm almost at the food) I go to wash my hands and I realize there is a whole other section that was completely empty except for a couple who had the whole section to theirselves (picture below)This was really confusing being the front room was as full as it gets. Now to the food: the edamame was not well prepared. The Karragge chicken was good this was not served hot at all. Still I stay because the Ramen. I eat Phõ and Ramen a lot a lot. I had to place my order with a different waiter as our waiter never came back over to us, I requested mushrooms in my Ramen, when my Ramen came it only had two pieces of meat. I was informed that I had to pay extra for more. Beware if you want more than two pieces of meat DO NOT GO HERE. I have never seen anything like it. I will definitely stick to my favorite Ramen spot in Washing Heights from now on. What ended it for me was the insult to my intelligence. Mushrooms were not present in my Ramen and the waiter tried to tell me that the mushrooms were present in my Ramen when they were not! I forgot to mention I mistakenly spilled the soy sauce for the edamame, pointed this out to the waiter and not only did he not offer to help me clean it, extra napkins were not provided until I asked. I know this is a lot, but it doesn't compare to how I felt from this service received. I have never been treated this way in my life. I am the least disrespectful person known to man. The service was inexcusable. The special treatment and cater to other patrons made me feel like I was back in the 50's. I will never be back here! Ever! Good job at treating people unequal. They said there is no available seating However, there was only two people that was seated near the window with the rest of this space by them and only found out about this seating as I went to the bathroom. After, ordering ramen (which I asked for mushrooms) they proceeded to bring me a bland ramen bowl with ONLY two small pieces of pork and NO mushrooms. Stopped by Jin Ramen for dinner after a long day in the city last September on the strong recommendation of a friend and I was not disappointed! I always love fancy ramen and the kuro tonkotsu I ordered was pretty phenomenal. The noodles were nicely chewy, the broth was delicious, and the pork belly was tender and fatty. The friend I was with got the green coconut Thai curry ramen which was amazingly flavorful and super huge. I love interesting fusion combinations like that and Jin didn't disappoint!
