I just missed closing time at Jimmies poke and wanted to give Tampopo sushi a try after seeing their yelp reviews. It's less than a mile from my house so it's super convenient. The sushi chef prepared my order quickly and I was out the door about 5 minutes after I placed my order. I ordered a Hawaiian roll and a spicy tuna roll and took my food home to eat. Mixed the wasabi with some soy sauce and dug in. The wasabi was real, not the paste that some sushi restaurants try to pass off, and a generous helping so kudos there. I tried the Hawaiian roll first with an extra dab of wasabi on top of the tuna strip. Unfortunately I was not very impressed. The tuna was slightly rubbery and had some light fishy odor. It didn't taste bad but the smell and texture were not great. I moved on to the spicy tuna roll and it was definitely better. I alternated between the two rolls and finished with the spicy tuna roll. It was the clear winner between the two. Still I wasn't very impressed with the spicy tuna either. Again, neither roll was bad, but they weren't good either. Mediocre is probably the appropriate term. I think that if the tuna had better texture and less odor I would have considered going back but at this point I have been there, eaten it, and will not return. read more

First time here and I was very satisfied! Compared to other sushi restaurants in the OC it's great! If you are in the area I highly recommend it. I met my friend here for lunch and she is a regular. The owners welcomed her with a free sushi taco sample bite, which was very tasty! We ordered the Rainbow Roll and a baked scallops roll. Both were very good but I will definitely be ordering the rainbow roll again. The baked scallops were not as baked as I've had at other sushi restaurants but they still tasted great. Hadn't had Tampopo in years. To be honest I thought they were no longer in business as the sign is not lit up in the evening and we hardly go on this side of the shopping center. We were craving spicy tuna and crispy rice. I had a couple cocktails so wasn't going to drive (mind you it's a 1 minute drive from my house) and hubby had ankle surgery and can't walk. Determined to satisfy our craving hubby drove and with crutches and made his way inside. He said they had a few customers and was close to closing. We order the Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice and Tampopo Taco. The ladies working were beyond nice and welcoming to my crippled hubby even walking him to the car helping carry the food. He got home and raved about how amazing they were. We really enjoyed the 8 piece crispy rice and 4 piece taco. Price per item was well worth it and reasonable. The texture and flavors were fresh and had the perfect amount of tuna. I've lagged on my yelp reviews but after the service, kindness and fabulous Sushi I was determined to write my review. I've tried only 2 rolls so far both had very generous portions. Bingo roll (no rice) and salmon lover. I enjoyed both but would prefer the salmon lovers without the dressing drizzled on top. Take out orders their fast. The one time I dined in with my parents for my birthday they brought out the bento boxes ordered first and waited around 5min more for the 3rd and last dish. Kinda bummed they didn't just time it so we could all enjoy at once. They did apologize for the delay with 3 sashimi pieces of salmon, so they redeemed themselves and stay in my routine visits when I crave salmon. read more

They put that sweet sauce on almost every sushi dishes and some of them didn't go well with it...and the texture of the tuna sushi was one of the worst I had, very tough and chewy... This place is a local favorite and for good reason! Not the cheapest rolls but the portions are generous and the fish is FRESH. Tropical roll is a must try. It's the right balance between sweet and savory. Karashi roll is not for the faint of heart, it is spicy but in a "burns so good" kind of way. Also really enjoyed the tempura appetizer, a good variety of veg and most importantly everything was sliced pretty thin so you get that good batter ratio. Beautifully presented even for takeout, which is a pleasant surprise considering presentation of food is usually overlooked for takeout. Superb customer service! One time, we had to wait maybe 10 minutes for our order and they were apologetic and gave us complimentary miso soups, California roll, and a spicy tuna roll! Totally not necessary but a really nice gesture to make you feel valued as a customer (considering we've had to wait over an hour for our takeout orders at other places without any acknowledgement). Even my daughter in law loves this place who is used to authentic Japanese food from Japan. The variety is very large and the food is so delicious. The California rolls are softer than other places. The soups are really authentic and bento boxes are very inclusive. These are so shareable. I enjoy the people who work here and the owner himself greets you every time. With a few more details, The restaurant location is kind of tucked away at the East Lake Village town center but it is great for all the houses nearby.
