Where should I start? I love sushi and I'd like to think I know it pretty well. I remember trying Sushi Noguchi about 10 years ago. It was mediocre and overpriced for what it was, if my memory serves. Even though we live nearby, we've always had to drive out for decent sushi. But 10 years later, we decided to give it another shot. I was debating between Sushi Imari and here, and I chose here because it's owned by a Japanese owner. I ordered saba (mackerel) first, to test how they handle the basics. It was nasty. The skin didn't look appetizing at all, clearly not in good condition. Failed. Then the rice. Nigiri needs well cooked rice with perfect seasoning, but the quality here was horrible. You could tell they're using old, cheap, low quality rice. The hamachi was meh, ruined by the bad rice. The salmon was cut irregularly, the halibut was fishy and not fresh, and even the jumbo scallop lacked freshness. You can clearly get better elsewhere. Sushi Noguchi, I'd respectfully suggest you either rebrand as a low end sushi spot (or even a conveyor belt place) to match this quality of fish, or, if you don't know sushi well and don't mind overpaying, you might still enjoy it here. read more

Sushi Noguchi is tucked away, deep in Yorba Linda. Although quite a drive for myself. I found this drive and place to be rather peaceful and serene. The quality of fish found here is quite immaculate. The quality of all the fish I ordered à la carte were phenomenal! The yellowtail in jalepeno sauce was delicious; although I was disappointed the chili flakes from the jalepeno had been scooped out, the flavors were still there and the sauce was still a hint spicy. The crab hand roll was near perfection! Lots of crab pieces, perfect amount of rice, and topped with avocado. The chuwanmushi was silky and divine; it was filled with white mushrooms, and seafood. The egg custard was so yummy with that dashi flavoring; I felt like I was back in Japan. Everything pictured are my absolute favorite pieces to order at any sushi restaurant. Since coming back from Japan, I stopped eating sushi here in the states, but after visiting Sushi Noguchi, I'm very happy to be having it again here! read more

Food was good, first impression was not so good. We arrived when opened at 5 pm on Saturday and when we walked it it smelt like a fish store. We understand that it is a sushi restaurant and they serve fish, I just think the ventilation should be checked or improved. We did not go with omakase because we know what we like. We ordered giant clam, chutoro salmon belly, yellowtail belly, sea bream, ikura, blue crab roll and sashimi salad, also 2 bottle of Kubota sake. It was just over $250, plus tax and tip. Fish was good, fresh and Jason was very kind and generous and quick with the knife, we were served fast. Place looks clean and bright. Ordered: - 2x premium omakase (3/5) Scallop - Sweet flavor but covered by the sauce on top Salmon - The salmon was pretty basic and a little stringy Yellowtail belly - In our opinion, the best cut! Very smooth and thick but also slightly crunchy. Spanish mackeral - Interesting flavors which worked, but was too fishy even under the ginger scallion dressing. Amberjack - Second favorite piece, we liked the yuzu pepper on the amberjack that left a spicy note to the cut. The amberjack was also of decent quality. Yellowtail - Very thick cut, we liked the firmness of it Golden eye snapper - Very crunchy, but also somehow as dry as a cardboard. Could have tasted better with sauce because it was pretty flavorless. Negitoro hand roll - This was our third favorite piece. The negitoro had a very generous portion, though the seaweed was not the crispiest so we struggled to take some bites. --- Overall (3/5): One of the weaker omakase spots. I had a scallop allergy and they replaced my scallop with bluefin tuna, which was a minus. Based off my other omakase experiences, I would have expected a higher quality substitute for scallop. The omakase set didn't come with toro too, which is honestly kind of baffling considering I've had omakase at half the price with toro. The rice was also cold and hard and did not taste fresh, and the ratio of rice to fish was not great. If this was the quality of the premium omakase set we'd be pretty afraid of what the cheaper omakase sets taste like. The service was nice enough and we were the only ones in the restaurant at the time so was quiet and private which we liked. Sushi quality Service Ambiance Second visit here - and it reminded me that this should be our go-to sushi spot. I love a mom & pop vibe and the owners (husband & wife) have apparently been around/ sushi Noguchi has been around for many years. The walls are decorated with family pictures (check out the one of the chef in the 70s in his Skyline!) through the eras.. She is the only server (and there's a busser) so service can be a bit slower -- but then you also get to enjoy her little stories when you ask questions about the pictures on the wall or whatever else. They are the sweetest. I hear the Hiro omakase is a great choice BUT we had a movie to catch across the way and you just can't rush an omakase... so we opted to order from the menu. Some seasonal stand outs were the Negitoro with Caviar. I didn't think I could love caviar more but to be placed on a bed of buttery toro is just *chefs kiss* -- we also fell off our chairs for the golden snapper. I'm a huge snapper fan but this one takes the cake. I need more before it goes out of season. Other favorites: otoro, jumbo scallops, crispy spicy tuna. It wasn't too busy for a Saturday night (although we were there 5:30-7) but again since the owner is the only server it can take a bit longer. We bring our friends here whenever someone is in the mood for great sushi and omakase. Hiro and Jun (owners) are always so friendly. Recently we came in for Valentine's Day and ordered the Valentine Omakase special. It was delicious per usual. We sat at the sushi bar and had the pleasure of being seated in front of Hiro. Everything was so fresh and tasted great. We had a seaweed starter, sashimi set, 2 sets of nigiri, and 2 hand rolls (uni and otoro). We were so stuffed and felt like it was definitely worth the price. Plenty of parking in the plaza. Would definitely recommend reservations on holidays. It was super busy on Valentine's Day. They are a great option for takeout orders as well. We ordered Hiro's omakase during the pandemic and it was so good! We live about 10-15 min away and the food held up great. read more

My girlfriend and I were recently in the mood for sushi and we wanted to try a new place we had never been to before. We were aiming for something in the Yorba Linda area so looking at Reddit and then confirming with Yelp, we landed on Noguchi. The restaurant itself is beautiful. Looks very traditional and you feel like you're in a Michelin style sushi restaurant. The host was exceptionally nice and the wait staff was super attentive. I counted at least 3 sushi chefs working at the bar at one time and they all looked like professional traditional chefs. As far as the food goes, my girlfriend and I found the place a little underwhelming. We ordered a number of items. She got the premier sashimi platter which was about $50 and I got the Bluefin Tuna trio and Bluefin Tuna sashimi platter. Those 3 dishes were the standouts and we loved all three. I would go back again for the Bluefin Trio and she would go back for the premier sashimi platter. That's the good. We also ordered a number of "non-premier" items and we found all of them to be lower than what we expected. Some, we didn't like at all. My girlfriend's favorite appetizer is the spicy tuna on crispy rice. This ones we got here were among the worst we've tried at any sushi restaurant. It was bland with almost no tuna or spice flavor and the rice was not very crispy. We also ordered agedashi tofu. Same problem, the tofu was so bland it was like eating nothing and the sauce didn't help much. My girlfriend also ordered a handful of nigiri sushi including salmon, mackerel, and yellowtail. None of them were very good. On my side, I ordered the miso soup with clams and while it was a hefty portion, I also didn't think it was mind blowing. Half of my clams were unopened which made eating them tough as I had to pry them open and got sauce everywhere trying to do so. Aside from the premier fish items we ordered, I will say the only other thing I found great about Noguchi's food is the fresh wasabi (as opposed to paste) that was offered on some of the premier fish. If I were to go again, I would ask if they could put that fresh wasabi on all the sushi or give me some on the side so I could do it myself. Overall, I don't think I'd go back to Noguchi again, but it was a nice place to visit. If you are somewhat bougie and like eating only premier cuts of sushi, then maybe Noguchi might be great for you. But if you're looking for standard general sushi that hits at a high quality level without breaking the wallet, this probably isn't the place for you. read more

I got two other rolls and a sushi platter, but it was extremely mediocre. It's been a minute since my last visit, but I dined here recently and had a wonderful experience. We made reservations for dinner, and everything was set up when we arrived. We looked through the menu and decided on some nigiri, hand rolls, tempura, starters, and a couple of beers. The sushi tasted fresh and well prepared, and the nigiri were decently sized. I enjoyed the Baked Blue Crab Handroll and the Agedashi Tofu. Overall, everything was delicious. We had one child with us; his order was the karaage (fried chicken) plate for kids. The staff was excellent, and the owner greeted us and ensured everything was going well. We celebrated my dad's birthday here at Sushi Noguchi and ended up paying well over $300 but it was definitely a memorable experience and my dad got to order a lot of dishes (mostly non-sushi) that he thought might be fun to try. My favorites from the dinner were the grilled shishito peppers, salmon skin salad, grilled salmon collar, king salmon sushi, jumbo scallop sushi, and the soup they made with the head from the sweet shrimp sushi. The staff were really friendly and helpful throughout the dinner and were quick to address any requests. They even gave us a complimentary black sesame Mont Blanc dessert because when I made the reservation, I noted that it was to celebrate my dad's birthday. They helped us sing happy birthday and even lit a candle... that was super unexpected, memorable, and greatly appreciated! I made sure to greet and thank Chef Hiro on the way out and he seems like such a great and amazing person. The dining area can get a bit warm, especially as it's Yorba Linda and the outside temperature was 91 degrees shortly before we went inside for dinner, but there doesn't seem to be any air conditioning, although I may be wrong about this. The food was awesome although the pricing was a bit high for a lot of the sushi items. I totally recommend anyone who loves an authentic Japanese sushi experience to try Sushi Noguchi... their menu is quite extensive and encompasses more than just sushi!! read more

We did the Hiro Omakase - this was my first time doing Omakase. Our waitress made me feel safe and was very accommodating as well as intelectual with each dish we were served. I was definitely pushed outside my comfort zone with a few items of food but I also found a few things that were enjoyable and delicious. Especially my daughter's water cup had black stuff stuck to the ice was grossed out to begin with. A lady who served us had no facial expressions and looked so unhappy. Been coming here ever since they moved here from La Habra, where their old restaurant was located. The couple who run this place are friendly. We found our server to be attentive. He took our order quickly and came to check on us during our meal. We ordered the crunch roll, smelt egg sushi, unagi sushi, chicken karakage, and chanwanmushi. Perfect for a date after a candlelight concert at the Nixon Library, it's just a few blocks away fyi. The food was ready good. They use to have beef rice bowls available but I think that was a limited time item. Those were tasty too. Came here for my birthday and got the omikase, while the wife ordered a la carte. Which was surprising because most places forces you to get omikase as well. For the omikase I was expecting at least one to two more courses for what we paid but overall the sushi was exceptional. The cuts were probably way better compared to what you would have gotten via nigiri or sashimi. I love that they had Uni, ankimo and fresh oyster as part of the meal. The restaurants dinner menu is pretty basic with few sushi rolls on the menu compared to other sushi restaurants in the area. The Miso Udon lacked flavor and came out cold. The fish was fresh and very flavorful. The item that I would recommend from here would be their omakase because they give different dishes. I also wasn't too impressed by the prices, as it was overpriced for what it was. The service was also a problem - I went on a Sunday evening and only 2 servers and 2 chefs were there. I would expect more employees at these types of restaurants. Because of the slow service, it took forever to get my food. The ambience is nice at this restaurant.
