I had this place bookmarked for a while. Finally came for my birthday dinner. It was a rainy evening and I was hoping there'd be umbrella sleeves offered. I didn't see any but saw buckets for umbrellas. I opted not to leave it there since I didn't wanna forget or risk someone taking it. I took it upstairs with me. My friend had arrived and was seated. Apparently, they do offer sleeves because she got one. But the 3 people who were at the hostess booth failed to offer me one. The beautiful ambiance will get your attention immediately. It is a stunning space. The tableware was gorgeous as well. We waited for our last friend to arrive who was almost half an hour late before ordering (we thought she'd arrive sooner). Our server, Matias was gracious about it the whole time. What we ordered: Drinks: Passionfruit Margaritas & Mojito - we were happy with them. Tlayudas, Guacamole y Salsas - this was really good and a great option for the table to share. The homemade chips alone were excellent. Liked all the different dips. Guac could've used some cilantro and more acid/spice. Tán Ceviche - I loved this. Super fresh and great flavor. Could use a touch of acid. My entree was the Shrimp & Crab Enchiladas - This was pretty good. The sauce could've used some spice and some acid to cut through the richness. My friend ordered the Yellow Corn Soup as part of her meal and she did not like it. She said it was too sweet which I thought was strange. I tried a spoonful and I agreed with her. It needed a savory note and again, acid would've done wonders. Also, the crab was a bit fishy in this. She enjoyed her tamal though. I tried a touch of the sauce and it was delish. My other friend had the Quesabirria which she was also happy with. To sum up: Ambiance: 5/5 The space is undoubtedly gorgeous. Food: 4/5 Beautiful presentation on everything but each dish lacks an element or two to make it a home run. Staff: Wait staff 5/5. Downstairs staff (greeters/hostess) 4/5. Needs to be more on point like offering customers sleeves for umbrellas or pointing out the buckets to put them in. At some point through our entrees a group of 3 women were doing a 10-minute photo shoot by the stairway where our table was. Absolutely inappropriate behavior and a manager should've stopped it. Camera flashes all up in our faces while we're eating wasn't cool. Overall, still a great elevated Mexican cuisine option. The slight tweaks would make this a 5 star place for me. What a GORGEOUS space. Whoever interior decorated this restaurant deserves their tens because it is a spectacle. I had only seen daytime pics, but being there in the evening is a treat. If you are someone who is looking at an aesthetic place, this is a top contender. Unfortunately, I would say this place is better looking than the food is good. The food was fine, appetizers were all fresh but lacked any real depth in flavor. I wasn't too thrilled with the bone marrow I had either (but the tortillas come in the cutest basket). Personally, if it wasn't for the drinks and the space, I cant say this place is worth it - you're not coming here for the food. Another little complaint I have is the women's restroom on the second floor - right by the door is a floor to ceiling mirror which I understand was included to make the space seem bigger, but my friends and I agreed that it is a little misleading - I kept wanting to walk into it thinking there was more space there and not wall. What sets this place apart from most places besides their awesome Tulum aesthetics is the fact that not everyone has to participate in the bottomless alcohol option, so you can invite your non drinking friends. They also have an à la carte bottomless food option which even me would Jed have to participate in. This is one of the only places that offers a bottomless food option. The waitress was very attentive and the drinks were strong! Worth every penny and I will be back here again for sure. We came here for our 17th anniversary as we saw the pictures and found it very nice and intimate. I must say the decor was beautiful to celebrate for events. The staff were extremely nice and welcoming. They let us view the dining area before seating us which was amazing and very accommodating. We chose to seat in the outdoor dining room which is enclosed and heated hence why the pictures came out red. The outdoor seating was very nice and romantic perfect to celebrate such an occasion. The food was amazing we ordered quite a few things. For starters we went with the waiter recommendation of guacamole with chicharron which was amazing especially with the sauces that came with it. The texture and temperature different was great especially with their chips. We also ordered the Bone Marrow which again amazing the star of that was the octopus which in our opinion was cooked to perfection. For the main course my wife order the Shrimp and Crab Enchiladas. The sauce was perfect for the pairing of the dish. She enjoyed the sauce and the tortilla filling. I ordered Tulum Mar y Tierra Medium rare. I enjoyed the sauce it came with the steak and the enchilada itself is amazing. The flavors are on point and the steak was so tender. I also had the equites which was amazing exactly how I liked it. For dessert we had the Yellow Corn Cake. I must say is not overly sweet which is perfect for us. But the staff surprised us with a Tres Leche Cake with a chocolate sign wishing us a happy anniversary and we were very touched that they did so. This modern Mexican spot in Turtle Bay is a hidden gem in the city. Walking into the restaurant, the stunning decor transports you to Tulum and the vibe here is perfect for a nice group dinner or a date night. Service here is fairly quick and timed perfectly as you enjoy each of your courses. For appetizers, we got their guacamole and tuna tartare which came with these thin chips that I absolutely loved, and sauces that paired so well with each dish. We also got their quesobirria, which was absolutely phenomenal and I could've ordered another one with how delicious it was. The restaurant is beautiful with lots of great decor. Downstairs is dark with tables and a bar. Upstairs has a large open room with a nice bar. There's a small outdoor area with a few tables which is where we sat. It looks like there is heat lamps above for the colder months. They offer a brunch menu. I'm not sure if it's all weekend or just Sunday. The staff were all great from the minute we worked in. The food was really good. The only reason I gave them a 4 star rating is because they ran out of a few items like regular Coke and coffee. Not sure how that happens but it is what it is. The presentation of all the food looked great. The guacamole with the corn tlayudas were amazing. It was a nice starter. I had chicken enchiladas which were great. Lots of flavor and honestly just looked delicious. I tried some of the Quasabirria which was also very good. The shredded beef had lots of flavor. They give you a few sauces to complement it. I arrived on a Friday around 8pm without a reservation after seeing availability on OpenTable, but the hostess could only offer me a corner table behind the host stand. I didn't mind -- I just wanted to eat. However, after nearly 20 minutes of being completely ignored, with no greeting or even a glass of water, I had to go to the bar myself just to get a drink. Think jungle-chic meets lowkey bougie, with plants, textures, and music that made it impossible not to vibe. What a disappointing evening. We just finished the Valentine's Day pre-fixe menu and, while the food was rather good, the service was abysmal. We were seated at 6:30 and were not even provided water until at least 15mins later. We put in our selections with the waitress shortly thereafter and the first course came rather quickly. However, we then sat for 45 minutes waiting for our entree, without our waitress checking on us once or anyone refilling our water. We eventually managed to flag her down (took some time to get her attention) and our food finally came maybe 15mins later. We were seated 2 hours in total for a 3 course meal, and food was on the table for maybe 20 minutes of that time. Perhaps the most disappointing part of all of this is the fact that the reservation had to be prepaid, including the service charge. And this was not a cheap meal. The front of house is a disservice to the quality of the food at Tàn. I understand that restaurants are often stretched on Valentine's Day, but that is no excuse for this level of poor service. read more

Tán has comfortably settled into my top three favorite restaurants in NYC. Absolutely everything about this establishment is extraordinary. From the moment you enter, you're transported to Tulum, Mexico. Surrounded by lavish plants, relaxing lighting, and gorgeous decor....and that's just within the first floor and tán's lounge. Once you're escorted upstairs, by one of the their friendly host staff members, that's where you'll be fully immersed in the Tulum vibe, which encompasses beautiful decorations, Tulum themed music, and an overall inviting atmosphere. Now, for the service...I haven't dined at many places that can compare to the service that we received. Javier, our Server, was outstanding. He was patient, attentive, gave exceptional recommendations, and treated us like we were his only customers. Our drinks were an Espresso Martini and one of Javier's recommendations...a Bacardi/Coconut/Mango cocktail. This drink was perfectly crafted and was exquisitely sweet. I enjoyed every drop and highly recommend it. We started with the Tlayudas, Guacamole, y Salsas appetizer. The guac was served with macha, salsa verde, charred tomato molcajete, and pico de gallo. It also came with thin, crispy, charred, Tlayudas that made this entire appetizer highly recommended. Our entrees were: Tikin-Xic Fish (whole branzino, two-colored zarandeado adobo, pickled onion, black bean purée, salsas). The fish was flaky, a knife wasn't even necessary, and I enjoyed the two tone colored look of the entire Branzino. The black bean and plantain purée accompaniments complemented this dish magnificently. The other entree was the Short Rib al Carbon (housemade tomatillo sauce, roasted tomato salsa, butter lettuce, pickled red onion). The meat was sooooo tender, savory, and the spice salsa sides made each bite delectable. We were going to skip dessert, but we were visited by the Assistant General Manager, Emilio Bautista. Emilio was beyond hospitable and, at the end of his visit, graciously gave us a free dessert. We shared the Arroz con Leche (Abuela's rice pudding, jerezmacerated raisins, puffed rice, vanilla ice cream). I have NEVER had rice pudding this delicious. The puffed rice was one thing, but as you worked your way deeper into this dreamy sweetness, it just got better and better. My photo will not do any justice to the mouth-watering enjoyment of this item. I highly recommend this dessert and appreciate Emilio's time and kindness. I visited Tán for a birthday celebration a while back. The décor and atmosphere deliberately mimic what you might find in Mexico. I've been to Tulum and it'll definitely make you feel like you're at a beach club on the Mayan Riviera (Yucatan Peninsula). We sat outside on a hot day but the wind and fans were enough to make us feel comfortable. For the food, I'd like to start in an unconventional place: The Kale Salad. I know, I know, no one will believe me, but it was REALLY good! I'm not a big salad or veggies guy, but I had it and it surprised everyone. Trust me. Try it. Our group was about eight (8) people deep so we ordered several appetizers, including the bone marrow, ceviche amarillo, esquites, oysters and guacamole. All were great tasting, however I recall wishing there was more of the tortilla/bread/crackers/carbs for consumption with some of the apps. Interestingly, it's the same thought I had during a visit to one of the beach clubs in Tulum. I remember ordering the short rib for dinner (no point deductions there). My secondary option was the salmon. Maybe I'll try that on my next visit. Others tried the lamb and I can't recall the rest of the main dishes. We loved it all. We loved the drinks as well. There's one of them that was presented with smoke-under-glass (Shaman´s Tán Mezcalita). It's quite the instagram-worthy show, but if you're near one of the big outdoor fans, the show will be cut short lol. The waitstaff was great. We stayed afterwards for the speakeasy on the ground level, for even more drinks. Again, they didn't disappoint. However, the flow of the area was hindered by furniture in the middle of the passageway between the front and rear of the floor. They have small tables there, but I can't imagine those tables being comfortable places to sit with people constantly passing back and forth. Anyways, It's definitely worth a visit. It's got potential for greatness if the speakeasy portion's feng shui is adjusted. The outdoor fan position might need some tweaking. Other than that, you should have a tasty time! read more

Came here for a birthday brunch on Saturday - res for 2pm. Did not get seated until 2:45? Maybe 2:35p. Unclear on what the reservation policy is but we were charged a 6% admin fee for setting up the reservation via email through the team (my friend had noted we were excited to post on social media etc.) we were told to have a minimum spend (50pp). We did get free shots for the lateness. If you religiously believe in brunch in NYC, seems to be a great hyped spot. I didn't see any coffee on the menu but there's a very cute steak and eggs and a version of French toast or pancakes. There are some cocktails and the decor is very Tulum all inclusive resort. Everyone was there for a birthday or bridal shower. Some of the staff are helpful and some are overworked. I think they should limit reservations or update the policy because the staff seem overworked and I don't think if we have a minimum spend and 6% fee, that our table should be ready late. There are many nice places in NYC where with or without fees, you are seated on time and don't have to manage the staff to get things you need (glasses, water, plates, orders). For ambiance and to look cool in photos leaving at 4 stars since this is a typical brunch experience. read more

This restaurant is so aesthetically pleasing! It reminds me of a restaurant you would find in Mexico City, but is placed in the heart of Midtown. I went for a large group outing and we had a prefix menu so this review is based on that. - The customer service was great. They made sure everyone was attended to and took the time to ask each individual about their dietary restrictions and allergies. - the guacamole was very flavorful and surprisingly the chips that it comes with aren't naturally gluten-free because they have a soy seasoning, but they were able to accommodate me and bring me just regular corn tortillas chips. - the star for me was the chorizo queso. I probably could have ate it all night and wished it came in a taco form. In fact, they don't have any tacos on their menu I don't think. - the salmon was perfectly cooked, and the short rib was so tender, but wish they both came with some sort of vegetable or side. - the drinks were well-made and weren't strong. - the ice cream sorbet trio they have on their dessert menu was also a stand out. I can't remember the exact flavor of the ice cream, but it was some sort of caramel or toasted almond and WOW! The hostess was rude when we walked in and pretended like she didn't understand me, I gave her the name of the party 3x and with an attitude she says YOU NEED A NAME and my husband had to jump in because he didn't like her tone either. Anyway, that was literally the only negative. The drinks are amazinggggggg! There was this one margarita that had like a raspberry or pomegranate foam on top, very elite! We started with the guac and queso. The chips were freshly made and seasoned so well. Unfortunately, the queso wasn't hot enough and had more of a rubber texture but I can tell it would have been delicious. I'm so sad writing this review because this used to be my favorite place but it has gone downhill since it opened. I decided to go for brunch to celebrate a special occasion and brought all my friends. The service was horrendous, for such an expensive place, you'd think they would try to be nice to their customers. Our server acted like we were inconveniencing her by asking her to do her job. She had a nasty attitude the entire time and they kept forgetting to bring our "bottomless" drinks so it literally would've been cheaper to buy them a la carte. The food??? Everything was cold by the time it got to us and the quality and taste of the food has shockingly gotten so bad. I'm super disappointed that a day that was supposed to be celebrated with good food turned into my friends and I being deeply frustrated with every aspect of dining here.
