I recently celebrated my birthday at Tan with a group of friends, and overall, it was a great experience. The ambiance is very Tulum-inspired, giving the restaurant a trendy and relaxed vibe. There's a cool bar area where you can hang out while waiting for your table, which is a nice touch. The drink menu is diverse, with plenty of creative options to choose from, setting the stage for a fun night. While the service was excellent overall, there was one glaring issue that affected our evening--the hostess. Unfortunately, she came across as rude and unwelcoming, which felt out of place given how well-known Tan is for its food and service. It was a bit confusing, especially considering how high-end the restaurant's vibe is. Despite this, our server was friendly and attentive, which helped balance out the initial negative impression. We were seated upstairs in an open setting, which was lively and spacious. We started with guacamole and salsa, as well as the Queso Fundido. The guac and salsa were fresh and flavorful, but the Queso Fundido was a letdown--it was cold and had a rubbery texture, which was disappointing. For the main course, I had the Ribeye Chicharrón Sope, which was incredible! The combination of the corn masa flatbread, huitlacoche purée, salsa verde, and all the fresh toppings was outstanding. The flavors were vibrant and perfectly balanced. Also ordered the Shrimp + Crab Enchiladas, which came with a creamy guajillo sauce, queso fresco, and baby greens. These enchiladas were packed with flavor, and the creamy sauce really brought everything together. Both dishes were warm, well-presented, and absolutely delicious--definitely the highlight of the meal. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their entree choice as well. To cap off the night, they brought out a complimentary birthday dessert, which was a sweet surprise. We also had coffee to finish off the evening, adding a nice touch to the celebration. In summary, while the hostess left a bad first impression, the food, service, and overall vibe at Tan made for an enjoyable evening. Love love love! First of all, the drinks are amaaaaaazing! We started off with the bone marrow and hamachi. The bone marrow was good, but it's not your typical bone marrow as it comes topped off with salsa and sliced octopus. The hamachi was great quality. I'm not sure if I was a fan of the lobster tacos - they're super tiny and didn't really taste like anything, but omg was the short rib al carbon was OUT OF THIS WORLD. The pork belly was also ok, but I still can't stop thinking about the short rib. I also want to mention how Yadi was absolutely wonderful! She was super helpful and I just loved her energy in general. At the end, we also decided to get some more drinks at the lounge/speakeasy. Thank you! Can't wait to come back again!!! read more

Great ambiance, great food. The bartender on the first level was very sociable and made conversation after serving our drinks. In terms of service.. they missed the mark a few times. We all order the same exact drink, and at first they deliver just two (for 3 people) and forgot about the 3rd drink. Then when the 3rd drink gets delivered, it is completely wrong after we all ordered the same one. Then a waiter drops a sauce next to us and it splatters all over our feet and the table next to us. The waiter states that he apologizes and will comp something from the meal. At the end of the meal, our bill was not comped at all. We asked the table next to us as they were signing their check - and they stated that they received their comp. Lastly, in the notes oft reservation - I told the restaurant that I was celebrating a birthday. Did we receive anything for that? No. Did every other table who was celebrating a birthday get something done? Yes. Being that our table was poc girlies, and the rest of the restaurant wasn't... it's difficult to not assume that the experience was based on racial biases. Like the website says. Its like being in tulum. My bestfriend brought me here on Saturday night for my birthday. The spot as 3 diff seating areas and all of the areas are decorated differently. We sat out on the patio. Its upstairs and covered but you get to see out on the city view. Gorgeous. The staff is friendly and everytime they put down a dish they describe what it is and how it was prepared. The bites are small but very good. We ordered the crab ceviche tostada 9/10 Lobster tacos 7/10 Pork chicharron 8/10 The green sauce that comes on the side packs a ton of flavor. We ordered the tequila flight it was interesting. We told them it was my birthday and our lovely server brought out a tres Leche cake with fresh fruit on top and a candle. It was so good. Its a grown and sexy spot. Gorgeous atmosphere, absolutely beautiful! Our party of five came here for my long time friend's 30TH birthday! There seemed to be a lot of birthdays happening that night, our table was surrounded by happy celebrations! That being said, the staff was incredibly attentive and gave everyone equal and top attention! There was a little bit of a mix up with my order, but I think I might have confused our waiter. I asked for the Queso Fundido, but wanted to know the portion size. I didn't mean to order it, which is what ended up happening. But they were quick to remove and were apologetic, which wasn't at all necessary! I personally apologize for not being clear on it. I ended up getting the pork belly, and it was incredibly delicious! Not that bad of a price for it too! I will say that the four stars is for the birthday girl's portion size of the lobster taco. I get that lobster meat is expensive, hence way the price was up there, but the portion to price ratio is a little bit absurd. I'll post a picture of it for reference. She ordered the bone marrow dish as a follow up, which looked amazing! But I do wish that maybe the sizing for the meals were a little bit more clear. It's hard to gauge online aside from personal reviews from patrons on yelp and google. But back to the positives! Our birthday girl ordered a cake from the outside and had it shipped! Our waiter was trying to gauge how to ask the question since he didn't know if the cake was a surprise. Again, it shows the care that the staff had towards our stay. What I also loved is that they cut the cake for us, and went as far to use the props that were individually on the cakes and place them on our own pieces as little decorations. It was so sweet They also let us take photos in the corner after we paid for our meals. The interior, the ambiance, the design - all beautiful. The food, delish! The only thing missing? Hospitality. Hospitality felt forced and not genuine. Barely smiles on the servers faces. The best smile and service was the gentleman at the front desk checking us in and walking us to our table. Everything just felt so rehersed. Like they were all doing only what they're told for a paycheck and no one really LOVED working there. When asked about the menu, the server basically picked one item from each section and read the ingredients to us. When the food came, the runner "presented" the food but it just felt like he memorized what it was. Making a customer feel like they're having a good experience is important. The Ceviche Amarillo was fresh with great flavors and the Oysters were unlike any I've had before. They are dressed quite well and definitely have a Tulum-inspired flavor to them. The Short Rib al Carbon was unbelievably tender and mouth-watering. It's a bit steep at ~$53 but honestly well worth it. I had been eager to check out Lum inside tan so when my friend from out of town wanted to meet for drinks at a trendy spot, it seemed like the perfect choice. Unfortunately, the experience fell short, despite the potential of the venue. Upon arrival, we were met by a host who didn't seem interested in making us feel welcome. She immediately informed us that the speakeasy was closed for a private event, which was disappointing but understandable. I asked if we could check out the upstairs bar, only to be told there wasn't one. It was early in the evening, and dinner service had just begun, so I asked if we could at least get a table for two. After an eye roll and a half-hearted "sure," we were seated, but not before being asked in a rather unfriendly tone if we planned on ordering dinner. As someone who's worked in hospitality for nearly 10 years, I know how busy and stressful evenings can be, but the lack of warmth from both the host and the server was off-putting. The server's attitude became more dismissive once he realized we were only ordering drinks and two appetizers. When another friend attempted to joined us, we decided we should stay for dinner and asked if we could move to a larger table. Even though the dining room was far from full, the manager told us there was nothing they could do to accommodate our request. That it was "impossible" The saving grace? The drinks were excellent--crafted with care and bursting with flavor. The food was decent, though not particularly memorable, which made the lackluster service all the more disappointing. We stopped by tan for our anniversary dinner. I booked about 3.5 weeks in advance. The whole booking experience was a bit odd so I am knocking off a star. The only availability was outside. I called to ask about indoor availability and a nice man told me that would be possible. He handed over the phone to a rude lady who said no way. She was so rude that I considered changing my reservation to another restaurant. On the day we came by, they did manage to fit us inside and the restaurant had plenty of empty tables the entire time we were there. I am quite confused about their reservation situation. The food was excellent. I considered skipping the guacamole but I am glad I didn't. The guac itself seemed better than the average guac. The salsas were excellent too. For my dinner I ordered the ceviche Amarillo which was excellent and a generous portion too. In contrast the lobster tacos were shockingly tiny. Check out the photo I added. My husband got the Yucatán chicken which he thought was good but overall it seems this restaurant does really well with seafood since I seemed much happier with my food. The drinks were really good. I got the coconut mango fizz and my husband got the cucumber mule (both non alcoholic). The dessert was excellent. We got the chocolate fondant. My friend found this place on Instagram, and upon walking in, I was very impressed by the beautiful design. The place is draped in linen, and there's green foliage that makes you feel like you are in Tulum. The upstairs is not very large, and they also have outdoor seating on the terrace, which is also very nicely decorated. Great for pictures! I arrived later than my friends, and they had already ordered appetizers and drinks. Our server seemed to be in a rush and a bit overwhelmed, and it took a while to get her attention to place my drink order. They now have a liquor license, and I got the spicy margarita, which was very good. One of my friends ordered the spicy watermelon agua Fresca and said it was refreshing but very watered down with hardly any alcohol. In terms of the food, I was mostly underwhelmed. The lobster tacos were flavorful, and the lobster was cooked perfectly, but the portions were miniscule. The beet salad was good, and they served it with burrata instead of goat cheese. I wish they would have added more beets instead of filling up the plate with mesclun greens. I was disappointed with the pork belly. It was overcooked and tasted like pernil and did not melt in your mouth the way pork belly should. I ordered the salmon and asked for it to be cooked medium more on the rare side, but it was overcooked and dry. I tried the short rib, and it was bland and just in need of some seasoning. The dish that stood out the most was the ceviche amarillo. This was truly delicious, and all of the flavors blended perfectly. Overall, Tan feels like a place that is best for those who are into the aesthetics and not so much into the food. Considering the prices, the food should have been executed better. I'm not against paying a lot for a meal, but I want to feel that the food is delicious and worth it. Great spot! The interior is absolutely breathtaking! We arrived a little late for our reservation but they were happy to seat us right away. I loved the couch style seating, and the wall decor, wow. It felt like a cross between Mexican Mayan and Moroccan themed, but very relaxing and upscale inside. We started off with a bottle of wine. I wanted to visit this restaurant because it looked really good on a Instagram reel I saw. I was sorely disappointed. All the dishes but one were super salty. The only dish that had a redeeming quality were the fish tacos. There is a lack of service because our table was overfilling with empty plates and they only bothered to switch out our utensils towards the end of the meal. You can get unlimited drinks and food but it's not worth it considering the food is lackluster and the drinks are nothing special. We recently dined here for brunch. A party of five, we all opted for the unlimited experience. The good: The hostess was as sweet as pie, as was our server Daniella. The drinks were satisfying, though I think they were premade to keep up with the volume of the place, though it certainly didn't seem super busy when we went. The bad: The food was simply meh...People forgetting the primary focus of dining out is the FOOD, and not cutesy plastic plants and burlap fabric hanging from the ceiling slay me. I was told people DINE here to TAKE PHOTOS. Ha! The best thing we consumed were the bao buns, ceviche and guacamole. I'm sorry, but the cornbread benedict just doesn't work, and the raved about birria quesadilla was simply overwhelming - too much going on. My halibut tacos lacked flavor, and the poor birthday boy left hungry after ordering the steak and eggs; also left unimpressed. The five of use represent five different cultures throughout the Latin Diaspora, and we felt like calling our abuelas to come here to fix this. Chile, people will fall for anything. Made a reservation weeks in advance to celebrate a milestone birthday, which I indicated in my booking app notes. When we arrived the entranced felt hot and stuffy and we said it out loud but none of the three people at concierge desk acknowledged our comment. We were taken upstairs to the dining area which was sparsely occupied, except for one section. I was surprised that they sandwiched two of us in a section that was already cramped while more than half of the other side of the restaurant was practically empty. What made matters worse was the heat. There was no air flowing through the space. When we asked the woman who brought us to our table why it was so hot, she responded with a level of heightened annoyance that the AC was down and left. We asked if we could even be moved to a less crowded area thinking it might be better. After 15 minutes of deliberation by the staff, they agreed to move us. Seriously - moving two people in a hot restaurant that was sparsely filled was a big deal? It was a super hot day and the heat was becoming increasingly worse and intolerable. We asked if we could cancel our reservation and do a rain check for another day. The waiter insisted that we would be charged a booking fee for the reservation because we are cancelling on the day of without even acknowledging that we couldn't stay because of the heat issue. Again - it should not be this difficult for restaurants to do the right thing for patrons. We asked if we could speak to the manager and he refused to come out and speak to us because we were getting nowhere with waiter. It was not about the money but more about the principle here. The waiter left and after another 5 mins or so he came back and said we could cancel without penalty. As we were walking down the stairs, we could hear the Manager complaining to the three attendants that were cancelling and was customer bashing. Very professional indeed. Very disrespectful. I could appreciate that things happen and they are beyond a business' control; however, what's in their control is how the handle the situation. It's simple - 1. Inform patrons at check-in of any service not available or of any disruptions 2. Offer alternatives to make them comfortable 3. Offer a drink or something to make them feel you're doing sometime about the service 4. Be professional- especially front of the house managers 5. do not ruin special events for your patrons My friend was celebrating a special birthday so we had to find some less than ideal restaurant to dine for his birthday. Shame on the staff at Tan. To the staff and owners- have you stopped to see how many restaurants that have gone out of business in Midtown? Think Zengo? It seems like tan recently opened as my friend wanted to try it. There are a lot of menu options, and we ended up ordering: - guacamole and salsa - ceviche tulum - lobster tacos - duck confit tacos - short rib - roasted broccolini - roasted corn cake (for dessert) The serving size on the tacos is quite small, though the taste was really delicious, particularly for the lobster tacos. The ceviche and the salsas were the other high points. The low point was really the service. I took a long time for everything to come out and for our orders to be taken. My friend was breaking her fast, and we waited almost 30 minutes after being seated before even getting water. My other friend ordered a drink, and it didn't come until we had already received our fourth dish. We sat for dinner at around 7:15, and we didn't finish until 10:15. Some of that time was spent waiting for the check which took a long time for us to receive, but it was an exceptionally slow dinner service. We were seated on the patio where there weren't many other parties, so I'm not sure if they forgot about us. Went there for a special occasion with a bunch of friends, atmosphere well decorated, they spend a lot of money trying to make the place impressive due to lack of flavor in their food and service. This is highly overrated un-authentic Mexican food trying to be something else, which I don't understand why anyone has to pay so much, when you can go to a street vendor and pay 1/10 and get an authentic flavor much better food than this. The only reason I gave it a one star and save it from going negative is that the atmosphere is worth looking. $27 for bottle of water! Really! Btw, service 2 stars. read more

Elegant w/ terrace opening for both private parties and regular dining. Love their hospitality and food choices. We were there for a private party and the terrace opening was such a hit for social mixing. There was a lot of food innovation but feel that some of the entries were too experimental. Good service and great drinks menu. Parking on the streets or in a garage right up front. read more

4.5 stars but it deserves 5 Yelp stars instead of 4. Tan is a beautiful restaurant with a separate bar on the bottom floor. The interior is cozy and reminiscent of Tulum. The interior designer did a wonderful job of just having the right balance of light and space. Food: overall very good! The .5 star off is from the courses : *the short rib - very fork tender and beautifully presented as all the other dishes but I felt that it lacked the umph when it came to seasoning. Maybe x2 of the spices would've made this dish spectacular. *Pork belly- tender as well but this could've been charred to enhance the smokiness of the fat and the sauce could've been richer in taste. *Bone marrow app- what a presentation! Topped with slices of tender octopus and cucumber and herbs, 2 different salsas on the side, and Lorenzo- our little rattan donkey which held warm soft tortillas. If they sprinkled more salt and double the seasoning this would've made me gush while eating it. The following dishes we had were 5/5: *Equites- fresh corn seasoned well with all the toppings it comes with. REALLY good. *Ceviche Amarillo- a milder and softer version of what I know as ceviche ( usually Peruvian) but still a bit tart and presented with small cubes of ahi tuna . *Guacamole - nicely seasoned and presented. Simple and came with a side of crunchy tortillas. Drinks: we loved all 3 of our drinks! This is where they shine! Coconut mango fizz (added a shot of rum) - just a great overall mix , topped with popping bubbles and what it looks like to be whipped egg whites. Aperol spritz - passionfruit based and refreshing! Would recommend this one Watermelon - unsure of what this is called on the menu but this is so light and refreshing. We ordered it with gin. Dessert: *yellow corn cake with Dulce de leche ice cream- soft and chewy, my friend who is from DR said the at they have the same dessert and she loved it! *tres leches- dense, moist and topped with whipped cream and fruits. Restrooms were clean. Service was prompt, friendly and knowledgeable ( we asked about our drinks). I loved how they replaced our sharing plates and our utensils for new ones after each course. It made an impression on me. We were seated within 5 mins of our reservation (Friday night, 8pm) Ambience is great! People were chatting but not loud. Lots of photo taking but none that were annoying LOL Would recommend! read more

Came on a Friday evening to celebrate a friends birthday dinner. This restaurant was easy to find and very aesthetically pleasing!! Theres a restaurant upstairs and speakeasy downstairs - gives quite the Tulum feel we order guac, salsa, chips, queso as starters. Guac was a bit spicy how i love it, queso came w tortillas to make little quesadillas which was nice. Ceviche was prob my fav as it was so fresh and juicy. For entrees the chicken was also my fav - very juicy and cooked well but didnt require a surplus of sauce . the enchiladas weren't anything special just normal enchiladas. would recommend anyone to come! read more
