Pretty good restaurant. I got introduced to this place by my friend and her family. I've had a few things and they've all been pretty good. I've had the dice beef (bo luc lac), Mongolian beef, general tso chicken, salt and pepper squid, wonton soup, fried rice, and of course the famous rice cake. We stopped by for a late dinner this weekend. It had been a while since we were last here and we noticed that they had a sign up indicating they were short staffed. It was very apparent once we were seated and had made our meal orders. Usually, their famous rice cake comes out quicker than anything else but tonight, it was quite a while before it was brought to our table. We actually got the fried rice first and that was all we had for about 10 minutes. Next came our salt and pepper wings, then their rice cake. A few minutes later and our pan fried noodles with beef and broccoli finally arrive. Was the wait worth it? Yes. Yes, it was. The salt and pepper wings are a new item on their menu and they were so good! Nice and crispy on the outside; juicy and flavorful on the inside. There were about eight pieces that came with that order. The rice cake was fantastic as usual. Their pan fried noodles with the beef and broccoli was huge and yummy. We had to pack that and the fried rice for leftovers. This place is definitely a gem in Chinatown although some of the dishes are hit or miss but still good. The menu is extensive. You just have to know what to order! One of my favorite dishes is the walnut shrimp. The shrimp are HUGE and the flavor is spot on. The house special fried rice is also delicious. I would recommend the house special rice cake as well. I've seen this restaurant so many times when driving through Chinatown, but never ate at it until now. A lot of my Viet friends really liked this place and they all raved about their house special rice cake (or BBC). I've never had rice cake with eggs before and whatever little seasonings they use on top made the dish SO good. I also really enjoyed the fried flat rice noodles as that is always a classic dish. I been coming here since I was 6 years old, this place brings back so many memories and I am happy they're still in business. Today I was craving some Pan fried noodles, so I decided to come here and order to go. Jason who took my order was so pleasant to deal with considering he was slammed he was still accommodating. I ordered the seafood pan fried noodles, the order came out within 15 mins and my oh my it was oozing hot and ready to be devoured. Everything was cooked to perfection and I liked how they cooked the seafood because it wasn't rubbery, I cannot stand eating undercooked seafood especially squid; when the squid is hard to chew then you know they didn't cook it right. The only complaint that I have is since I paid $15 for this they should have put a little bit more veggies in my box cuz I love my veggies but no worries I was satisfied. This place is offering dine in service but for right now I'm still taking everything to go, the employees are wearing mask and gloves so they are following the CDC protocol. With glaring neon lights and aluminum accents everywhere that make it feel like a diner, then random facsimile coconut trees that gesture more toward tropical vibes, Tan Tan feels a bit like a restaurant going through an identity crisis. The food, however, speaks confidently for itself. We let Yelp recommendations take our hand through the menu during this first visit, realizing only in retrospect that we'd essentially created a marathoner's carb fest. Our first entree was the Chinese broccoli and beef stir fried flat noodles, which we inhaled. The wide noodles were slick with the thick, unctuous gravy and completely satisfying. The sauce that came with our second dish, the seafood pan fried noodles, was similar, except it was ladled over a pie of crispy, fried egg noodles. As we let the dish sit, the noodles cooked just slightly in their sauce bath, making for a great textural contrast to the chow fun noodles. The last dish to arrive was actually our appetizer - the much-acclaimed banh bot chien, or house special rice cake. According to the menu, these take a little longer to cook and will therefore arrive later into your meal. This was our first time having it, and I'm afraid I couldn't quite see the draw here. Fried rice cakes are pressed into a foundation of egg, then covered liberally with scallions. Our rice cakes were quite greasy and soft, a far departure from the crispy cakes that others seemed to rapturously describe. Service can be touch and go. They were quick to bring our waters and menus, and the food was delivered in no time, but once we wanted our check, there wasn't a soul to be found; my husband eventually got up to chase a server down. This place is a classic with my family. Order the banh bot chien - house special egg rice cake - literally the first thing on the menu. Every time we go here we have to order at least 2 for the table. Everything we order is pretty solid in terms of flavors. Their vast menu includes many options, and after all these years we still haven't tried everything. Some commonly ordered items include: rice cake, salt toasted squid, crab and asparagus soup, Peking duck (for special occasions), walnut shrimp, eggplant with garlic sauce, and beef with gai lan. Recently we did notice that they may have increased their prices a bit, but that's no surprise (at least steamed rice is still free). One of my favorite beef macaroni place. I've been coming here for more than 30 years and my parents from when they were first opened...dunno how long that's been. Even my grandma loved this place. We miss her every time we eat here. Her favorite was their #1 or something. Egg pancake thing. She passed a few years ago at about 90 years old. Tan Tan is a great family restaurant and they open super late. My parents brought me in the late night when I was in elementary school after they went to their dance parties. H1 House Special Rice Cake/Banh Bot Chien for the win! This place hands down makes the best banh bot chien in the city. It's always cooked to crispy perfection. It's a pretty solid order when practically every table gets one, some tables order multiple because it is that good! It's seriously the best. Can't find anything even in the same caliber of delicious as Tan Tan's Banh Bot Chien. We also got the beef crispy noodle/hu tieu xao and it was the best as well! It was very different than the hu tieu xao at other places, the noodles were extreme crispy and it was absolutely delicious! We ate the entire dish and didn't feel guilty about it at all. The mi is also very good as well when it's colder weather. The birds next/mi xao is also delicious. All the portions here are giant and definitely shareable. Family style is the best way to go here so that everyone gets to try a variety of things. They have expanded over the years so you shouldn't have a wait since the place is giant now.. The parking lot is still a super pain just as all other parking lots in Chinatown/Bellaire area. But it's super worth it, they have another location on Westheimer as well that is less crowded but new and super nice. This location is older but it is consistently good. The service well is typical Asian Restaurant service, slightly subpar. You don't go here expecting super awesome service, it just won't happen, you go here for the food. The servers are always in a rush and there is not a lot of chit chat, they are in and out. No frills service here. They will seldomly check in on you and you are lucky if you get your drink refilled without having to ask. You get a lot of food for the price and the food is amazing, but the service is not there to wow you. It's there to serve your food and take you order. So if you can't deal with short and to the point service this isn't the place for you. But if you like consistently delicious food, this is the place for you. So the miss the mark on service and therefore they don't get 5 stars but it's hard to go to an authentic Asian restaurant for an affordable price and get 5 star service in my opinion. Great place for Chinese or Vietnamese food! I've come here in the past but came here today with my friend. She got the sesame chicken and I got the General Tso's chicken. Both were very good and they came with fresh broccoli. We also got an order of spring rolls which came a bit late but they were worth the wait. Only complaint is the service was pretty slow. The servers were friendly though, and got all of our requests right. We had our check split perfectly and they also gave us some tofu and some shrimp spring rolls as requested. Food quality has dropped immensely overtime--and I hate to say this, but Tan tan is a shadow of their former selves. Most of my favorite dishes I typically order are a hysterically bad now. Recommendations and Thoughts: This place used to be the mecca for Banh Bot Chien (pan fried rice cake egg pancake thingy). This reason alone was enough to sit in the restaurant. Gone are those days as now you will be served a soggy tray of destroyed memories. Walnut shrimp/prawns are still on point. Serving size has gone down and the candied are now scarce, but the prawn is high in quality and HUGE. Get two orders if you're planning to share. The broth for their noodle soup dishes is surprisingly delicious. Fried rice is very bland, and yet still quite oily. Salt and pepper calamari looks pretty tasty. read more

We ordered 5 dishes large wonton soup, fried egg rolls, house special fried rice, general tso chicken (non spicy) and, salt roasted spare ribs. We got the soup, egg rolls, and rice all almost at the same time. We waited for the meats to eat the food and 20 minutes go by our rice is cold by then. I call someone over the only thing I was told is that it was busy and I would have to wait. I explained that was fine but they needed to warm up my rice it had been siting our for over 20 minutes at that point. The server seemed upset we asked to have the rice removed and brought back when the rest of the food was ready. No one attended to us we had to wave someone down every time we needed something or get up with our cup to get a refill. Great food but awful service!
