I've been wanting to try this place for so long but the line is always busy! However, we got lucky on this day bevause there wasn't a line so we got seated pretty quickly! I got the soba 1 layer and it was AMAZINGGGG. They hand pulled their noodles so it did take quite a bit but the noodles were fresh! Their dipping sauce was also very flavorful as well! I enjoyed the noodles a lot bevause it has a stretchy feeling to it. I got to speak to one of the server and he was so nice!! He explained some of the history of the store to me while I was looking at the family pictures on the wall! Would def come back :)
I've already written a detailed review of this restaurant below, but wanted to add some photos from our recent dinner. I got the Nabeyaki Udon for $23.45 and hubby got the Soba with mixed tempura. I didn't care for the nabeyaki broth. It was a tad bit too salty. I also didn't like the oysters that were in it. It seemed like a strange ingredient to have inside nabeyaki. Last of all, the shrimp tempura had way too much batter. I really enjoyed the udon though! The noodles are perfect. I'd rate this a 3 out of 5. Hubby loved his soba with mixed tempura and would rate it 5 out of 5. We went on a Saturday night for dinner. They open at 5:30pm and we got there at 5:15pm. We were the 2nd in line. An employee came out before they opened up to find out how many each group had in their party. She wrote it on a piece of paper and then let everyone in until the restaurant was filled. My suggestion is to get there around 5:15pm if you want to get seated in the first group, otherwise you'll probably have to wait an hour.
Matcha soba? That's all we saw and we knew we had to go here. I went with the soba sampler, which comes with 5 different kinds (ume shiso, nameko oroshi, sansai, tanuki, and 2 matcha). They also come with a small bowl of dipping sauce. Now if you're planning to split this with a friend, I don't really recommend this since the soba stuck to itself and was hard to unravel and split. It's more of a solo dish. We had trouble trying to split it and ended up dipping it and eating with one full bite. What I like about this place is the simplicity of the options and the flavors. None of the dishes are overwhelming, but are light and fresh.
I've been meaning to try Tanakaya after seeing their soba flight on Tik Tok! I came near opening and got seated right away, and by the end, it was pretty full, so I can see how waitlists might be long during busy hours. Plenty of parking and staff is attentive! Everything is a bit expensive for what it is, but overall taste wise, everything was amazing regardless! We got the assorted tempura, filet katsu don, and cold soba flight sampler. The assorted tempura was good, they had a lot of variety and I enjoyed the mushroom, asparagus, and potato! The shrimp tempura portion is very generous in size and was good. A little overpriced for what it is, but if you love this assortment of fried tempura, it is overall good to try! The filet katsu don was amazing, and I like that it came with a small bowl of miso soup! It's always nice to have that as a complimentary side dish. The katsu was crispy and complimented well by the sauce! I'd highly recommend this dish! And now for the star of the show... the soba flight! This was so fun to go through and I highly recommend it just for the experience! My personal favorite was the one that included enoki mushroom on the topping. Definitely would recommend trying Tanakaya if you haven't already! I'd definitely come back.
This is my go-to spot for udon and soba. The noodles are always fresh, and every dish I've tried has been amazing. You can really taste the quality and authenticity in each bowl. The wait can be a little long -- as the owner mentioned on Yelp -- but it's well worth it for truly authentic Japanese noodles. The service is good, the restaurant is clean, and the pricing is very reasonable for the quality you get. I highly recommend trying the cold soba -- it's my personal favorite and never disappoints.
Quiet and small soba shop with tasty noodles! My hubby and I came around 1 pm on a Sunday. The place was around 75% full. They have various soba and udon noodles and couple of appetizers. I got the nameko oroshi soba and hubby got the kitsune soba. (Dishes are $16-$21). The wait was pretty long, around 45 minutes to get both of our dishes (does have a paper in front of store saying dishes will take 30-45 minutes). My nameko soba had decent amount of nameko super refreshing and filling. My hubbys udon was warm and noodles were chewy. I do like Minami soba better counting the quality and wait time. Would love to try the other dishes next time but will consider to go if wait is 30-45 min.
Got here at opening and barely was able to snag the last table. There was already a long line waiting to get inside before the doors opened. The food took a really long time to arrive. In my opinion the food is not worth the wait and lackluster. Katsu don- 5/5: I enjoyed this dish. The katsu was very crispy. We got the lunch combo and with soba noodles. Good choice if you want to have rice and taste their soba. Soba sampler- 3/5: The presentation was very nice. Taste was mid. 4/6 tasted almost the same. The matcha is an interesting flavor if that's your liking. To me it was kinda strange to be eating matcha in that form. The noodles themselves had almost no taste even when dipped into the sauce. Hot Udon noodles- 3/5: This dish was okay. Not too much flavor.
The soba noodles are authentic and the tempura was fried beautifully. However, this is one of the most poorly managed restaurants I've been to. My husband and I came in on a Sunday. We got seated at 12 pm and ordered within a few minutes. We did not get our food for 50+ minutes. The waiter said it's because the soba is hand twirled... but even then it shouldn't take that long? We each ordered the soba sampler and a side of mixed tempura. After the first rush died down, a couple sat down next to us and ordered the same thing. Their food came out within 10 minutes. The whole experience was very frustrating. Even though the food was pretty good, I am not coming back. There are not that many tables here so for food to take that long to come out, it is not acceptable. We should have known when we walked in 30 min after opening and the majority of tables did not have their food yet, that it was a red flag. Items came out one by one for each table. It was like watching paint dry.

One of me and my husbands favorite dish is Ten Zaru Soba and this is our go to place for that. They make their own noodles fresh, their sauce is flavorful and their Tempura is lightly battered and crispy. Love the different of veggies that come with it and although there was only 1 shrimp, it was big, plump, and very tasty. We haven't been back here for a while and I was pleasantly surprised when they had matcha soba noodles as an option for a couple of dollars more. So since I love matcha, I had to try it and my husband ordered the traditional buckwheat soba noodles. The matcha noodles were firm and chewy compared to the traditional ones. The matcha flavor didn't stand out though. Although it was good, I miss the nutty and earthy flavor of the traditional buckwheat noodles on the dish. There is always a bit of a wait for your dish to be served but servers are always polite and nice. Restaurant's ambiance is nice and relaxing.
Came here for dinner tonight and left pretty disappointed. The restaurant is located in a plaza with plenty of parking, and the restaurant itself is cute and has plenty of indoor seating. The staff are nice, but my goodness this is one of the slowest restaurants I have ever been to. The restaurant was about 60% full when we arrived, and it took over 40 minutes for our food to be served, and not once during that time did the staff check in or apologize for the wait. The food itself was just ok; I had ordered mixed tempura and curry udon. The curry udon had a different consistency than I'm normally used to, and the tempura was your standard affair. I was really hoping this would be worth the wait, but unfortunately it wasn't. Overall, a really disappointing experience, and while I'd love to try their soba noodles, I refuse to put up with these absurd wait times again. Edit: Unfortunately my wife and I both got sick from this meal the next morning, so we definitely will not be coming back.
We heard great things about the soba so we decided to give it a try. I ordered the tanuki udon and katsu don while my friend ordered the kakitama soba and chicken curry don. My katsu don was the favorite of all of them. It was SO flavorful (a little salty), but nonetheless really good. We also ordered their special cold soba sampler but were left underwhelmed. I couldn't taste the difference between the flavors. I preferred their rice dishes over their noodles surprisingly.

I know their soba and udon are their main dishes but I actually really enjoyed their karaage Their chicken pieces were HUGE, crispy and juicy on the inside. The matcha soba was not worth the extra $2 tbh because the flavor of matcha was pretty light but the tempura assortment had a nice variety of vegetables and a big shrimp. read more
Plenty of parking, small restaurant with big flavors in their udon and soba dishes. Dishes came out relatively quick and they are large so the price you pay is worth what you are getting. The curry dish was hearty. Really good service and again broth was fantastic for the noodles. read more

Got here a bit before 530 meal service started, and got cut off when every seat was filled. So we had to wait to be seated by 620. Within 10 minutes, we were able to place our order and have water at the table. The assorted tempura veggies came with shrimp and squid. This was the star of the evening, and was well worth the $19.95 price tag for its simplicity and crispness. We also tried their kake udon, anikake udon with veggies (this one had a thickness to the soup, maybe corn starch for thickening?), and cold soba sampler. The winning items were the assorted tempura and the cold soba sampler. I'm not sure what the one with the pink-red radish on top was for one of the six sobas in the sampler, but I'd come back to order that in a bigger portion. I'd totally skip on the udon because it was waaaaayyy tooooo salty. The noodles tasted like they have been soaking in the broth for way too long. I've had better at other places. Don't get udon, just get soba and tempura! We finished and left by 650-7pm. Not too shabby for first impression, but definitely not worth the wait unless you line up before they open for each meal service! read more
Hidden gem? People were lining up minutes before doors even opened and after that the line continued to form! Tried their sampler soba noodles and chicken karage and both tasted good. I'm not the biggest fan of soba noodle but objectively, this place is a solid spot for soba noodle! I got the combo set with the chicken curry. The chicken curry was basic but solid. The soba noodle was fresh with the perfect texture and the dipping broth was refreshing. One of my friends got the soba noodle flight and we didn't think it was worth it. The different flavors all tasted the same. The portion size is definitely generous! I couldn't finish all the noodles. I appreciate that they provided extra broth for the dipping sauce when you togo the leftovers! It's a thoughtful touch. read more
Luckily there wasn't much of a wait on a Thursday evening. We were seated immediately. Our orders took a while to get because they make them to order but it did take a really long time and my friend and I were constantly keeping an eye out to see when we could eat. We went right at opening and there was a small line. I ordered the Oh Zaru Soba, which is the same thing as Zaru Soba just double the portion. It definitely wasn't necessary though because we didn't even get to the second tray before getting full. The noodles were cold and refreshing and had good bounce. I liked the seaweed on top. I wished there was some meat because I personally can't eat too much of just noodles. Maybe we should've gotten the karaage too :(. The dipping sauce for the noodles was basically just soy sauce. Damn, I did not get a picture of the vegetable tempura-- as stupid vegetarians, we couldn't get anything with broth as it contains fish. So the soup-craving on a cold night was instead fulfilled with cold udon- which don't get me wrong were VERY well made udon and you can taste the handmade love in the bouncy-ness of the noodles. But their vegetable tempura plate was so yummy! Lightly battered and it all stayed airy and crispy through the meal. Perhaps the most memorable thing was how this one adorable waiter fills the hot tea, he's the Japanese version of Salt-bae and I would watch him refill teas all day long. Tanakaya in Tustin is a hidden gem for anyone looking for authentic Japanese soba and udon. It's a simple, unpretentious restaurant without much decoration, but the focus is clearly on the food, which is top-notch. I came here for Sunday dinner, and although most tables were full, I didn't have to wait to be seated. There's plenty of parking outside, which is convenient. The menu boasts fresh, homemade noodles, and there's a disclaimer that it might take a while since the noodles are made to order. I waited around 30 minutes, but it was well worth the wait. I ordered the Cold Soba Sampler ($17.95) and the Hot Kitsune Udon ($14.40). Both dishes were incredibly delicious, hearty, and simple. The portions are generous--especially the soba sampler, which looked massive on other tables as well. I also appreciated the small touch after finishing the meal--they offer complimentary warm water/broth to dilute the cold soba broth so you can drink it, which is a nice way to finish off the meal. Wanted to try an authentic Japanese restaurant and the reviews pointed in this direction. Restaurants is somewhat tucked away in a larger strip mall, and was fairly standard without any distinguishing features or decor. At the server's suggestion, I ordered the karaage and the gomoku hot noodles, wanting to try dishes that were specialties of the restaurant. Unfortunately, neither dish stood out. Fresh, authentic, and delicious soba noodles! All the plating is beautiful too. Their kaarage was juicy, hot and delicious. Their soba was very flavorful and had good texture. The only downside was the wait to get our food. But I attributed it to the time needed to make everything fresh. Their seems to always be a wait at this restaurant too which tells you how good it is. Such a disappointing experience I have been looking to try this place for a long time and I will not be returning. Came on a Sunday and waited about 30 minutes which was to be expected on a weekend. We ordered right away and the food took over 30 mins to come out. There is a warning on the menu that food can take 30-40 mins during rush hour. Despite the warning the wait time is absurd. Even with an hour of waiting hungry the food was not worth finishing. I got the ai Zaru which was just soba and udon noodles with dipping sauce. The dipping sauce was mediocre and flavorless. I would compare it to the pre made bottled sauce you can find at the Asian market; it's not good enough to be spending $20 on. The udon felt undercooked but the soba was fine. With the sauce being the main component of the dish I would except way more. On the other hand our second dish was good. Our second dish was the katsu don. It was very flavorful and a hearty portion size. It was worth the wait and the price. But I would not return just for that. The service itself was also pretty bad. Our server didn't check on us one time after dropping off our food. He also dropped off I'm assuming the wrong food and took it back after mumbling something. He seriously needs to speak up the few times he came he would mumble something and walk off super fast before we could even ask him to repeat himself. We had to get someone else to bring the bill for us he was never around. If you want bad service and mid food this is the place for you. read more
LET ME START OFF BY SAYING THE FOOD HERE IS GOOD. But nothing special so I wouldn't wait for it if I was you. However, I didn't like that one of the staff kinda judged and warned me that if I order 2 dishes, it would be too much. I understand he means well and doesn't want food waste. If I couldn't finish the food, I would've just asked for a to-go container... I felt pressured and uncomfortable that he was so adamant about prepping one of my dishes as a to-go in the first place and just bringing out one dish for me to eat there. I ended up just ordering the soba sampler. It wasn't filling but definitely tasty. He means well but lemme eat how I want to eat?! Also, please modernize and streamline your waiting system because y'all just have a sign-in sheet and call out the door. It works if your wait time isn't long but there have been times where I stopped by and the wait time was 1hr+ Cute ambience and delicious food, along with friendly staff. Tanakaya is a long time established and well loved soba restaurant- in a place with lots of parking and inside with moderate seating. Its very charming but it takes a verrryyy long time to get your food out. Seats fill up quickly as it seems everyone wants for it to open and immediately take a seat. I don't blame them, wait time is like 2 hours long. Took us about 1.5 hour to get our food after seating at around 11:40am on a Friday morning. I was feeling pretty hangry. My dad liked his hot duck soup with soba- I got my cold soba with vegetable tempura and my mom with the soba sampler. Feels very much more soba heavy than anything else... so if you want more things like meats, and tempura, you def gotta order more on the side. I felt it was pretty pricey considering the wait.... At least they had sobayu to finish off your soba sauce. Charming place if you're chill.... otherwise, I'd look elsewhere if you want speed. read more
Was excited to try but food did not reach my overwhelming expectations. To be fair tho I'm not a fan of soba but my soba fan girl friend felt the same about it. Tried the following dishes: 1. Soba sampler: six versions (two matcha soba, soba with enoki mushrooms, soba with Korean bean paste with greens, soba with tempura crisps, and soba with veggie toppings). It was beautiful but not worth it. 2. Pork Katsu don with eggs: very good. The best dish of the three 3. Assorted tempura. Beautiful and good. Nothing special tho. read more

If you're craving authentic Japanese soba and udon in Orange County, head to TANAKAYA. This family-owned gem has been open for over 75 years focusing on Japanese soba and udon and donburis. With over 30 hot and cold noodles options, you can also select between soba or udon. The cold option is a dipping broth, whereas the hot noodles is a soup. I ordered the ten zaru that came with cold soba and a plate of tempura, including shrimp and various vegetables. The soba was refreshing, where as the tempura batter was light and clean. I enjoyed the variety of vegetable tempura, including kabocha pumpkin, okra, eggplant, and sweet potato. Sticking with tempura theme, I also tried their special combination with a hot or cold noodle dish with a smaller donburi aka rice bowl. I opted for the hot Tanuki soba and a Ten Toji don, which includes battered shrimp, onion, and fishcake in a slightly sweet sauce served on rice. Came here on a Sunday night around 5:45 and two of us were seated right away! They do have limited hours, so it's good to check that before you go. Clean space with nice restaurant vibes, cool art and attentive staff! I got the soba sampler, which seems to be one of their more popular items. It's 5 different kinds of noodles with their soba dipping sauce. The matcha noodles are good and the vegetables on the sansai one at every flavorful (that one was my favorite!). I could've done without the grated yam and sour plum ones. The 6 piles of noodles may not look like a lot but it ends up being a filling meal! The dipping sauce is simple but tasty! Came here with my cousins after attending relatives nearby. Since we were all craving soba, we decided to stop by this place recommended from a friend. Since there were so many soba options, we ordered the soba sampler. Overall, soba was very average. One of them was very minty/vinegary, which's I did not like, the others were okay but the sauce definitely saved to the soba. Just my biggest complaint is that the food took forever to come out. Overall, meh experience but service was good though. read more
Hands down my favorite place for udon and soba in the area. Be prepared for a wait to not only sit but also dine. Service is solid, but turnover is not as fast as some of you may like. The interior was pretty minimal, but ambiance is definitely fine for a casual meal. The noodles were good, but definitely preferred the Katsu Don bowl for taste. I had a great time here. Tempura was delicious. I also ordered agedashi tofu, and hiyayako. Of course, I had to order the tanuki soba cold. This is an authentic Japanese soba ya with handmade soba. The staff are very friendly. I would recommend going early as it does get crowded. read more
The food here is definitely different and quite authentic just like in Tokyo Japan. However the long wait time in line and at the lunch table really down graded my review to recommend coming here. I highly recommend you give yourself two hours time if you want to enjoy the space and delicious food here. They are way under staffing in the kitchen area because food is only prepared when you order and that takes lots of time and patience. My Nabi udon soup was very salty and needs extra hot water to balance it out. The fried chicken and cold tofu were great. Overall 3 stars for standard in price product and performance. But the 2 hours waiting time in total is the real downside to this wonderful Friday lunch bargain special in old town Tustin. Happy Lunar New Year 2025. Of course the soba noodles were the star. Perfectly al dente and so scrumptious dipped in the broth. I had the ten zaru that came with tempura veggies and a shrimp. The tempura was expertly lightly battered and seasoned perfectly. The chicken karaage was also tasty and it was a generous portion to share. Service was friendly. Overall had a good leisurely dinner here catching up with a friend. read more
Found this place on social media and overall its a solid spot. It's nothing too special that you can't replicate at home, but the price and portions are fairly moderate. There was a small wait when we got there, but we were seated within 20 minutes. Plenty of parking and service is good. read more

We got here a little after they opened on a Sunday evening and were seated immediately! Since we got their close to opening it wasn't too busy and our food arrived quickly! The staff were also very friendly and helpful! The hours vary so if you do go, make sure you check first! I ordered the Ai Zaru! It came with Soba and Udon noodles with the dipping sauce. The portion sizes were good as well! I was not expecting the portion sizes to be that big and it was actually very filling. The Soba and Udon noodles were very fresh and the dipping sauce was a nice addition to the noodles as well as the furikake that was on the soba noodles! Will definitely come back! My friend & I ordered the cold soba sampler, Yakko, and a hot udon dish. Everything was very delicious & pretty. I usually love my soba noodles very grainy and very nutty, but the soba here is more firm and mellow (it was different than what I've had and good). The hot udon dish was savory and umami (I would order again). The aroma of the food is also very nice while waiting. We came for lunch on a Saturday and waited around 20 ish minutes. The service is really great, 10/10, and I like that it was a casual calm dining vibe. read more
Delicious!! We waited for about an hour after getting here around noon on a Saturday. I got the katsu don with udon and wow. Everything was perfect. The Karage is probably the best I've had, crispy and hot. The cold soba was delicious. Love that all their noodles are handmade!! read more
Stopped by Tanakaya a few weeks ago but the wait was a bit too long so we decided to go elsewhere. This time, we made sure to arrive 15 minutes prior to opening to secure a seat. A staff came outside prior to get party size so they could get the tables set up appropriately. Once doors opened, staff directed you to the table and our highchair was already there. Special Combination ($19.95): Selection of hot or cold soba/udon (3 options each) + a half size donburi bowl (4 options available). Opted for the hot kitsune udon noodles and the filet katsu donburi. The udon is rather simple with the broth, noodles, and 4 pieces of deep fried tofu. Dashi stock was delicious in the broth. The filet katsu don had 2 pieces of deep fried pork katsu on a bed of white rice and sliced cabbage. I asked for sauce on the size so it wouldn't be overly drenched for my liking. Each combination set comes on a tray with sides of green onion, togarashi (in a mini packet) and side salad. Service was attentive and quick - servers came to each table shortly upon being seated to start getting orders into the kitchen. The food only took about 10 minutes to prepare after ordering. We were also provided with a kids bowl and utensils. Definitely get here prior to opening on the weekends to avoid waiting! Great spot for Japanese food - will definitely be back to try the soba! Located in the same plaza as Cream Pan. No issues finding parking in the shared lot, even during peak hours. read more
Found this place via yelp reviews (how else?) and decided to check out the cold soba sampler because it looked SO cute. We came to this plaza wanting to eat in but saw the line and wait list and decided to get take-out instead. So we did, of course, ordered the cold soba sampler. The wait-time for take out was pretty long, and it was a rainy day so we sat in our car to wait. The presentation of the sampler was as good as seen in other photos! However I must say the taste was fairly standard if not bland. It was a little disappointing. Maybe we'll come back and try other items next time... read more

This place definitely reminded me of my trip to Japan. The noodles had nice bounce. The Karage was not overly battered or oily and had the right amount of crunch and moisture in the chicken. The amount of noodles definitely surprised me. Nice quiet spot. I went a little before closing. read more

Are any of the noodles & sauces/soups/dips vegetarian? Meaning no fish products either, but eggs are ok. I called the restaurant once & was told there was nothing vegetarian, but the reviews here seem to suggest otherwise?
