One of my favorite Korean comfort food restaurants in Irvine! My go-to is the Spicy Beef Soup (Yukgaejang). It's a healthy heaping of shredded beef, a ton of veggies, egg, and glass noodles. Tastes just like a warm, cozy hug. Comes with a side of rice and a collection of side dishes. Their menu features a host of different traditional Korean dishes! A popular but hidden spot for Korean Soup in Irvine. The price for portion exceeded my expectations since the seafood pancake was huge. The Beef Shank Soup was pretty tasty and larger than any of the ones I've tried in LA. It was soo disappointing and not even close to what it used to be. Some noted changes: 1. All the servers are young college looking kids. Where did all the Korean ahjummas go? 2. They really trimmed down the menu. It's also now a paper pamphlet and a couple things were discontinued. Interesting that they didn't go the QR code route like many restaurants over the pandemic. 3. The prices increased like crazy. Things that used to be just $12.99 are now $19-20. 4. The banchans look similar to before, but nowhere near as good. Their seaweed and kimchi side dishes used to be my favoriiiite. Everything is bland and not good now. 5. The interior decor changed. It's ok but felt more modern before. The things we ordered seemed similar to before, but nowhere near as tasty. I think the nakji bokumbap and cabbage galbitang are still solid dishes. But the tonkatsu and dumpling rice cake soups were definite downgrades. Their broths used to be sooo rich and complex - it no longer tastes that way and falls flat. We ordered the famous beef back-rib soup as well as the octopus rice plate. I want to preface by saying that I am not much of a soup person and this was my first time trying Korean beef soup, but the meat was very good! The soup was quite bland for me but I think that's just because I'm not used to the flavors. They do have some seasonings available on the side as well as yummy side dishes. The octopus rice plate was ok, and I appreciated that they had extra gochujang and sesame oil bottles on the side. The service is par, nothing special nor is it amazing, but just enough to get things by. I sat down for a dine in and ordered the Fried Dumplings (Mandu dumplings) and the Octopus Rice Plate served in the style of a dolsot bibimbap, where you get a hot clay bowl to keep it sizzling. Price wise it is higher than other places, but you get a egg, octopus, and crunchy rice at the bottom. Octopus Rice Plate: 4/5 Decent. I think for $21 it is high for a bibimbap but you're more there for the experience. I have to say the food tasted alright and it wasn't spicy. I do wish the rice was crispier when I had it since I felt like mine was just too soft. Other bibimbap places usually have crispier rice. Some people might say they're avoiding burning the rice but for dolsot b...that's kinda the point to get crispy rice. Fried Dumplings: 3/5 Mid, and not worth $15 imo.
