My boyfriend and I visited Tangerine Thai for dinner after attending an event at nearby Woodland Park Zoo, as we wanted to dine somewhere walking distance. We found Tangerine Thai and as we were looking at the menu in the window, a couple was exiting and mentioned to us how yummy the food was. Sold. We were the only ones dining in half an hour before closing on a Friday night. We ordered the BBQ chicken, the Steak Salad and Pumpkin Curry with sticky rice. Everything came out in a timely matter and service was excellent. However, food just seemed to be A-OK. Of all our dishes I enjoyed the pumpkin curry the most, with its huge chunks of pumpkin within the sauce! That's what mostly sold it for me. It was a good dish, with lots of coconut and pumpkin flavor, and would recommend ordering it. However, the BBQ chicken was overcooked, hence dry. Portion was large and the side of a sour-sweet dipping sauce was nice with the chicken, but wished the chicken had been moist and juicy. Steak salad had yummy veggies and the garlic-y dipping sauce was fantastic, but shouldn't the steak be the winner here? Sadly, it needed a little more grill on the cook, as the texture was slightly undercooked and hard to chew. Not a bad place for Thai food, and cool that it's a neighborhood eatery with a close proximity to my favorite place, the zoo! But, the food just had some minor issues. Had the dishes been perfectly cooked, our dining experience here would've been better. We ordered takeout last night and it was super good! We got the Penang curry with chicken and pad ki mao with pork with a side of rice. The curry was creamy and flavorful. The pad ki mao was peppery and crammed with veggies. The spice level was lower than expected but it's hard to gauge ahead of time how spicy each place's star system is ahead of time. I ordered takeout (#32 stir fried veggies with chicken). When I got home, I was shocked that there was so little chicken. I weighed it and it was only about 2 ounces (most stir fry meals will have 6-8 ounces or more). Wondering if it was a mistake, I decided to give them another try. I called and asked them how many ounces of chicken they put in their dishes. The nice gentleman on the phone went to go ask. He came back and said they cannot take my order. He was told to refuse to answer my question. THEY ARE RIPPING PEOPLE OFF. Avoid like the plague. Edit: The owner is alleging that I did something "inappropriate" to the employees, but this is completely false. I was polite and nice the whole time. Fresh ingredients, relaxing open atmosphere, but it's just too spicy for me! We started with the tom yum kung which was full of fresh prawns and would have had an excellent cilantro flavor to it had I not choked the minute I put it in my mouth. It was just too spicy for me to drink! We had ordered it 3-star spicy which I can usually handle, but after trying the soup, we asked our waiter to change the rest of our food to 2-star. The chicken curry and tofu pad thai came out still a little too spicy for me, but more manageable. The curry was very rich with a strong coconut flavor and it was full of bamboo shoots and tender white meat. The pad thai had lots of fresh bean sprouts and little squares of tofu but it was also quite liberally laced with hot red peppers. I liked it a lot anyway. My fault for believing that I'm not a wuss when it comes to spice, but I'll be asking for 1-star when I come next. Overall, Tangerine is not the best Thai food I've ever had, but it's pretty tasty nonetheless. I agree that it's not a destination Thai restaurant, but one of the best in the area. read more

This new restaurant just opened next door to the Phinney Market and I couldn't be happier. We've been missing a good thai spot in the Phinney/Greenwood neighborhood and Tangerine Thai is more than adequate to fill the bill! First of all, yum! We had spring rolls with a sweet sauce to start and they were so fresh and tasty. They are listed on the menu with chicken, but it was not a problem to get them with fried tofu instead. For dinner, I had the pad see ew, which was not as good as what I've had at Thai-ku in Ballard, but I was still a fan and that's saying a lot. I'm picky with my pad see ew. My dining partner had the yellow curry and oh.my. I could have drunk it with a ladle, it was so tasty. (No, seriously. If I had been alone....) The menu is accommodating to vegetarians and they offer different rice options and a tasty listing of desserts (though I was too full to test them out). They have beer on tap and wines galore. It has a cute, boutique-like interior with booths, tables, and sidewalk seating. The front of the restaurant is a bay door-type window that will likely be rolled up on days that it's warm, making the whole place into a sidewalk cafe. I couldn't have asked for more in a Thai restaurant. It's right around the corner from my house, but they offer free delivery for those who'd rather not hoof it. Great local spot on phinney ridge, just a block down form the zoo. It's got a nice indoor seating space, but they also provide quick deliveries around the area. Portions are always very large and prices aren't too bad. I tend to get the Pad See Ew or Red Curry to go when I'm on my way back from work. I am happy to see a new restaurant on the block. Same owners as the Wild Orchid in Ballard. I have only been in one time so far so we will see how my opinion changes as they settle into their new space. I really enjoy the updated interior and large window that opens up to the street. They did lots of work to make this place look so good, before it was a pottery shop which looked to have half the amount of space they have now. They currently only accept cash, but are working on getting a plastic machine up and running. I really enjoyed eating here, I thought it was a little pricey, but the Pad Thai was taste and the curry is very good. not impressed with the spicyness, when I order 5 of 5 I would like it to be really hot. although I have been told I am a terrible judge of spicyness as I love HOT food. All around pretty good thai restaurant, and I am glad to have another thai choice between 85th & down in Fremont! Great location for those of us that live in Phinney Ridge / Greenwood areas. Like the burger place around the corner that doesn't take credit cards (you know who you are, Red Mill Burgers) Tangerine Thai also doesn't take credit cards. Unlike the burger place around the corner, however, the thai place staff is not rude and afraid of our modern technology like cell phones. Apparently they are afraid of our modern technology like credit cards.. anyway. There's a 711 located just to the south of the restaurant with an ATM inside if you need to load up on cash before you sit down to eat. The place is relatively small and cozy, decor is simple, tasteful, and modern. Use of mirrors in a couple key places makes the place feel bigger than it is. Everything is new and very clean, the small number of tables means the place will never be overly noisy. I hope they are still finding their groove.. the service last night was very slow. They were busy when we arrived, almost every table was full. We were delivered menus and water quickly, but nothing was quick after that. Thai restaurants are often quick with the food but we had to wait an uncomfortable amount of time to see our food. Hopefully they will figure out their style soon and improve on the service delivery. The food is pretty good, we tried a few dishes and a curry and everything tasted great, not too greasy or watery like bad thai can be. Overall I will be glad to eat at Tangerine again! read more

Very tasty Thai and some unique offerings you don't see at other places - salads, etc. The cash/check only thing is a bit of a pain but makes sense in terms of saving a small business the extra charges. We did take out and my only complaint is that the serving sizes seemed very small for the price - perhaps this was due to smaller to-go containers? My $9 mini-salad was tasty but should have been 30-50% bigger for the price - same goes for DH's pad see ew. Again, both were very good, though. If there was a 3.5 * option I'd use it here - again, mainly for the prices (and yah, they're saving that 2% or whatever on credit card charges so why not trim things a buck or two?) Very solid Thai establishment! We ventured to Tangerine shortly after moving to our new Phinney home, and we had very high hopes as our last Thai joint was (and still is) fantastic! We were very happy with our experience. Parking was a little difficult to find at first as there is no dedicated lot, but we learned that this is the normal in this neighborhood. The venue had a nice feel to it, almost resembling a converted garage at one point. We ordered a couple of dishes to share which included the Pad See Ew and Spicy fried rice. The spicy fried rice was definitely my favorite, and I would highly recommend you try it. All in all, this is good, tasty Thai food. Service is decent and prices are fair. read more

My gf and I have to fight the urge not to go here EVERY time we have a craving for Thai. We try to venture outside of the norm, but this place is fantastic and we can always agree on it. Great ingredients, the rice is...the best rice I've ever tasted (and it's just rice!), the chefs seem to care about each dish they create and the wait staff is attentive. My neighbors recommended this restaurant many times. Was just here last night and the food was amazing! The waitors were very friendly and the place though small, was very cute. We ordered pad Thai, cashew chicken, BBQ chicken, and few other stir fry dishes. One of the things I miss most about living on the Ridge is Tangerine Thai! They have amazing food (get the pad thai and cashew chicken), the staff is super friendly and really helpful. While service can be a bit slow, the do the best they can with what little they have... the place is always packed, people are always coming in and out of there, and the phone's always ringing. 9 out of 10 times we would call our order in, pick it up and walk over to Woodland Park for a picnic and some frisbee tossing. I think I've only eaten inside this place twice in two years! Sadly, I no longer live on the Ridge and pretty much stay in Ballard for EVERYTHING... but I imagine when the weather gets better and my winter clothes are traded in for flip flops and shorts I'll be heading over to Tangerine Thai for some take out.
