For the past couple years or so, I've been lusting after Jeff O.'s gorgeous Upper West Side food pics. Seeing the neighborhood's culinary scene through his lens made me want to rethink my entire "the Upper West Side sucks for food" philosophy. Ultimately, I could no longer resist. I contacted the man himself and he was kind enough to give me a list of his favorite haunts to help me plan a mini food crawl in the area. So Jeff O., this one's for you: The thing to get here is definitely a tapioca crepe. LOVED its uniquely chewy cum crispy texture! A lot. I think I'd get a different filling next time, though. Wasn't that crazy about my goat cheese, arugula and mushroom pick. The cheese totally overwhelmed the veggies and it was all I could taste. Nonetheless, this was so different in the best of ways. Also tried some pao de queijo, aka Brazilian cheese bread, and liked this, too. Maybe not as airy as what I've encountered elsewhere, but packed with flavor. Experienced a bit of sticker shock with the 2 for $5 price, but then, am used to getting this at random little storefronts in Newark, New Jersey. Both of these are gluten-free by definition, in case that's a selling point for you. This fast casual cafe offers minimal seating and fwiw, sells their pao de queijo frozen to reheat at home. Also spotted brigadeiros, Brazilian condensed milk truffle-like treats, should you be in the mood for something sweet. read more

Eh... I got a steak sandwich at the midtown location. Service was polite and helpful. The ambiance was cute and the food was average. My real complaint was the price point. I understand that its NYC and this is a gluten free Brazilian restaurant was almost $16.00. Way too much for what you get. read more

On a girls trip with my daughter and this was our first stop in NYC. The jalapeño cheese bread was out of this world and both of our mini panini sandwiches were amazing. The service was outstanding - so friendly and welcoming. Ambiance was super cute. No celiac reaction which was to be expected since it is 100% gluten free. I couldn't recommend this one more. Top notch and we will probably visit at least one more time while we're in the city. read more

Cute spot on the UWS! I came with a friend on a Sunday at 1pm and it wasn't a problem getting a table. (You order at the counter and seat yourselves.) Most of the tables only seat 2, though, so bringing a group in might be tough. First impression of the tapioca crepes: these look like styrofoam! But are thankfully much tastier. They're chewy with a slight crunch, and somewhat airy. I ordered the Eggs Benedict crepe. Overall it wasn't bad, but 1) the portion size was pretty small, and 2) the egg is fried, not poached. (I suppose a poached egg would probably be logistically difficult. But the brunch fiend in me was still a bit disappointed.) My friend got the carnitas, which was slightly larger than my crepe, but still rather small of a portion in my opinion. I wouldn't say tapioca crepes are my new go-to, but they're definitely worth a try - and a nice gluten-free option! read more

I came here on Sunday 12pm. You order at the counter and seatings are first come first serve. We didn't have trouble grabbing a table. Interior was cute and comfortable. We ordered: Lox cream cheese crepe - Average. The texture of the tapioca crepe is slightly firm and chewy. I asked for no capers but instead got a ton in it. I didn't see any red onions so maybe there was some miscommunication? There was a ton of cream cheese and not enough smoked salmon.. sadly since the crepe was nearly $13. Acai bowl - Good, beautifully presented and overpriced. I checked in for 10% off but I'm not too sure if I actually got the discount. The cashier looked confused when I showed him. I didn't complain about the capers either. And I'm not sure why the water cups were the size of a espresso shot. I don't think I will be returning. After a frigid morning in which I had to duck like a squirrel in and out of stores just to pull off my gloves and respond to texts/emails, I finally went into Tap because they advertised WiFi and there didn't seem to be a massive queue. Had to wait awhile for a seat to open up (with everyone else ignoring my silent pleas to hurry up) but the guy behind the counter was friendly, offering a loyalty card. I first ordered my standard of chai latte, which came frothy and sweet and actually hot rather than lukewarm. It came with a Hershey's kiss, which was a cute touch. I ended up getting hungry so I went and got a banana and a banana cake sitting in the display case. Some of the other menu items sounded delicious, like the açaí bowl and the tapioca crepes, but man oh man, I could have eaten five of those banana cakes. So, so moist. Overall, a warm neighborhood cafe. If you want seats on a weekend, get here early. read more

Been really excited about trying this place, but wasn't feeling my lunch too much. Got the vegan tapioca crepe and the banana muffin. Compared to the fluffy, gelatinous tapioca crepes I've had at other places, this one is very firm and hard, with zero taste. The banana muffin also had way too much nutmeg in it, though the consistency was so fresh and great. Everything in this place is gluten free! How amazing is that. I had the veggie cassava crepe with vegan cheese! I also got a banana muffin and my hubby got the chocolate carrot cakes! Overpriced! This place is grossly overpriced. I ordered a tapioca crepe with Caprese filling, and with the $15 price tag, I was expecting something to blow me away if not at least fill me up. Although the crepe looked cute, I did not like the taste (it was too starchy for my liking), but the portion size was horrendous. I am not a heavy eater by any means, but after eating a crepe and one of their cheese puffs, I was still hungry. I could have bought a similar Caprese sandwich for half the price, which would have not only tasted better but would have also filled me up. I think Tap is trying to create a fad with the tapioca crepe but not sure how that will work without any returning customers. I can see people trying to it just to see what it is but never coming back again. At least that is where I am. The Brazilian tapioca is very different from the taiwanese tapioca. This crepe was very unique but the tapioca by itself doesn't taste like anything. I liked the crepe as a mid-meal snack. The acai however was extremely sweet!! It's made with fruit juice instead of almond milk. If you like juices, you'll enjoy this acai bowl; otherwise stick to the crepes. I don't know if this tapioca will become the next fad, but for what it's worth it was worth a try. read more

I can't recommend TAP enough!!! For starters, you know the saying if the restaurant is from a different culture and it's filled with people of that culture that's a good sign, well this place is Brazilian and you can always catch them here. The food, coffee, and just overall energy is everything you want in this kind of low key, quick eats restaurant. This cafe is probably the biggest symbol yet of how dramatically the UWS dining scene has been shedding its reputation as a total wasteland. It's chic, it's delicious, it's bougie af, and it's got a trendy new food - tapioca crepes! - that you can barely find anywhere else in town. Usually, with any cool new food, there needs to be like a dozen downtown places selling said cool food before it comes to the UWS. And yet, here we are! Anyway sorry that introduction was really long. The crepes are good! Expensive, but good. The fillings provide most of the flavor, while the tapioca lends a really interesting textural element that's crisp and puffy. Eat your heart out Soho! read more

This review is only for their crepe. Though they are famous for the tapioca crepe, I personally found it bland and the texture was hard and odd when compared to a traditional French crepe. Nice little coffee shop in the UWS! They brew with Irving Farm Coffee Roasters so I had a nice cup of coffee as I was working on an assignment. Free WifI! Unisex bathrooms. The tables are mainly two-seater types and can get pretty crowded. They have a public restroom and great customer service! They pretty much forgot about the food I ordered.... but gave me two additional free drinks to compensate for the long wait. I got a "tapioca crepe" to munch on. I had a smoked salmon one. It's basically like a classic lox & bagel with capers and red onions but instead, they use tapioca! Tapioca apparently is not just in boba (bubble tea) drinks! My favorite aspect of travel is finding new eateries to experience. My least favorite part of travel is having to say goodbye. I could come here everyday. One of my favorite places to grab a quick bite in UWS. Food quality and taste is 10/10. Everything on their menu is AMAZING.....my favorite items are their tropical bowl (which is an açaí bowl with delicious home made granola, strawberry and banana) and their caprese cheese balls. Their tapioca wraps are incredible also, I like all of them. The only downside is their pricing, it quite expensive but for quality organic food that is to be expected and therefor you cannot ding a place for that.
