I usually don't like leaving negative reviews, especially for a place I visit regularly. I often order the super cheek burrito with no beans, and it's usually fantastic. Unfortunately, today's experience was disappointing. The biggest issue was the meat. It was extremely chewy and not tender at all. Every time I took a bite, I would end up pulling large pieces of meat out of the burrito because it was so chewy and would not come apart without assistance from my own hand. That really took away from the overall experience. There was also a mix-up with my order. The person preparing my food accidentally made my burrito as a wet burrito, which meant I had to wait an additional 10-15 minutes while a new one was made. The cashier was very friendly and courteous, which I appreciated, but between the long wait and the quality of the meat, this visit fell well below the standard I've come to expect from this location. Especially how expensive food these days are...it's not unrealistic to expect consistency from spot you frequent for a good burrito. read more

As much as I love the Sunset District, one thing that it has always been criminally short on are taquerias. Sure, it's home to the likes of El Burrito Express and Gordo's, among others, but it could always use more, especially around here. So, even though it took me a little while to eventually make my way here, I was pretty excited when I first saw Taqueria Chapala come along! Because, if nothing else, it's a whole lot easier to stop off and park around here to get my super burrito fix than to head to 9th Ave to hit up my longtime go-to, Gordo's! Much like the rest of the neighborhood, Taqueria Chapala looks pretty non-descript through and through. Inside, there are about a half dozen tables, but most folks seem to order to-go. As for the menu, it's got all of the essential staples, like tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and nachos, but also so much more than your typical taqueria. In addition to breakfast options like breakfast burritos, huevos con chorizo, and huevos rancheros, they also have seafood dishes, fajitas, entrees, tortas, desserts, and even burgers. Plus, along with their salsa bar, they also have a self-serve basket of chips that you can load up on! -- QUESABIRRIA TACOS with Consomme Although this wasn't the best I've had, it's definitely the best thing I've had here. Love that this came with three pieces and that each one was oh so cheesy. However, they also could've been crispier and, more significantly, the consomme was super thin/watery. -- CARNITAS SUPER BURRITO with Rice, Beans, Salsa, Guacamole, Sour Cream, Cheese Not bad, but nothing special either - it just tasted very standard. The carnitas were decently juicy, but I didn't notice any crispy edges and I wish it had been seasoned more. I also liked that they didn't skimp on the guac and cheese, but the burrito felt like it could've been fuller. -- REGULAR FISH TACO with Cilantro, Onion, and Mild Salsa Ehh...this was just okay. While I very much appreciated how moist the fish was and how it was quite large relative to the size of the tortilla, I wish it had more of a crust/char on it and that it had been fried instead of grilled. -- COMBO #1 with Chicken Flauta, Chile Relleno, and Choice of Enchilada (Steak/Carne Asada) The overall portion was generous, but this was mixed. Points for offering a Steak Enchilada and for how full the Taquito was, but the latter wasn't very crispy and the chicken was dry. As for the Chile Relleno, it was very cheesy, but the batter/tortilla around it was mealy. Much like the food, service here felt a little up and down as well. For the most part, all of the workers seem friendly even though one of the female workers didn't initially give off the warmest of vibes when we first walked in (she was a lot nicer once we got to talking to her). Also, food doesn't always come out that quickly either, as it took almost 15 minutes to get my burrito (the worker was too busy chatting with another worker and taking a customer's order to grab my food from the counter behind her). While I certainly appreciate having Taqueria Chapala as an option, I'd be lying if I said anything that I've tried here was as good as what I've found elsewhere. That's not to say anything was terrible, though, as I've definitely had worse. In any case, there's a non-zero chance I'll be back at some point, as the convenience is too hard to resist, even if the food is just average. read more

On a walk with the kiddo and stopped by here as I was craving a breakfast burrito. There's a breakfast burrito A and B. Went with the B which comes with choice of meat, eggs, potatoes and crema (around $12). Kiddo ordered tacos ($3.64 each) - carne asada and carnitas. Both were good. The tacos were topped with quite a bit of meat and the burrito was filling. Noticed they have Taco Tuesday in which tacos are $3 each. Super solid spot for Mexican food in the Sunset! In an area where Mexican food is sparse, I was excited to see this place popup and receive so many good reviews. My boyfriend came here twice for a breakfast burrito before we ended up coming here for lunch. He really liked the BBs, so I'm excited to go back and check them out. Now onto our lunch - we ordered the super nachos with carnitas and a super quesadilla with chicken. Nacho order was big and absolutely loaded up with all the toppings. There was a whole lot of everything, especially meat, so that was great! Despite our best efforts, we couldn't finish them and had to take a decent portion home. The quesadilla was also really good! Not quite as stuffed as the nachos were loaded, but it still had plenty of meat and cheese, and had the most delicious crispy char on the tortilla. For the meats the chicken was my favorite of the two, the carnitas were also good because they were super tender, but I did kinda wish they had a little more char to them. The chicken was juicy and grilled to perfection, I'd for sure get it again! They have a little self serve salsa bar, unfortunately the salsas were a little too spicy for me, I liked the flavor of them, but my mouth was on fire for minutes after eating them. read more

With the few burrito options in the Sunset, I'm glad Taqueria Chapala opened. There were a lot of construction workers that came to grab lunch around here, and there were a lot of take out orders. Probably had to wait 15-20 minutes for two burritos alone. I want to saw they make their own tortillas chips because they were so good. Such a nice crispiness, just too much oil, a nice coating of salt. The carne asada burrito was good. Honestly, one of the better burritos in the Outer Sunset that I've had. Size-able portion with tender meat. I still think the best burritos are in the Mission, but this one is a solid option for anyone in the Sunset that doesn't want to go out too far. read more

Hold Up, this used to be an Indian restaurant. My times have changed. It's hard to have a business on slow Noreiga street. The salsa was fresh, the service was great, everything was clean. The taco was fresh and good and the Horchata was not sweet which is a win for me. It's a mild Horchata which is good if you're looking for a late night beverage that's isn't super sugary. Chill little Mexican gem in the middle of Chinese food row. Ordered the regular burrito with beef and it was fantastic! Sliced beef not ground was tender and flavorful, zero gritty or chewy pieces. We really needed a taqueria in this part of the 'hood. However, i'm usually pretty weary about Mexican places in general since there's so many good ones in California in general and although this place isn't the best one of those, I still give them five stars because it's actually pretty good. I will say, though that I think their more "regional" cuts of meat and dishes are better than the other more popular meat types. For example, I think their lengua is so good. It is a shame though that they've stopped serving menudo which is my favorite dish and so rare to find even at other Mexican restaurants. This is one of my favourite places to get a taco, burrito or quesadilla, however I went yesterday Monday, August 7 pm, and apparently they have new owners so the place was very disorganised. I could not order online because their system was not set up yet, the chips were not fresh and warm under the Heat lamp because they're organising. The portions of the burritos and the quesadillas are much smaller now, I'm willing to give them another try only because it was the first day with a new owners, but if they don't improve, I think they're not going to succeed. read more

Appreciate a taqueria in the sunset, but my experience was just average. My husband and I wanted to try it out so I ordered a carne asada super burrito and he ordered a lengua super burrito + a taco with all the works. We ordered to go and opened it up as soon as we got home and the burritos and taco were cold! The tortilla definitely was not warmed up and the cheese on the taco wasn't melted. I luckily just microwaved it up and ate it hot, but thought it was just average. Liked that it came with chips, but even the chips weren't the classic taqueria chips offered - felt like the Costco chips just put in a smaller bag. Finally, a good authentic Mexican spot in Sunset! I will miss the old spot, A Desi Cafe, but this replacement is good so far. One thing missing from Sunset has always been a good Mexican/burrito spot. El Burrito Express, Gordo, and Chipotle are all terrible and I usually stick to getting mine from the mission. Underdogs is good for tacos, but I wouldn't state it as an authentic Mexican, more like an American/California Mexican. Taqueria Chapala has hit the spot. Had the lengua super burrito. Yes, they have lengua!!! And it's delicious. Only thing missing is cabeza. Maybe one day? Salsa bar is decent. At least they have it and lets you grab your own. Pico de gallo is decent, and others are not bad. Not amazing, but it's good enough. I would come back again to try their fried Tilapia, tacos, and quesadillas. There was a line and as we ate, more people were coming in. The menu is pretty standard and the food is also pretty standard. Pretty good for Sunset, but I imagine it's middle of the road compared to the taquerias in the Mission. I got the lengua super burrito and hubby got chorizo, both with refried beans. The wife and I were excited when we saw a new taqueria open up here. She had a burrito and I had a shrimp tacos platter. The service was friendly and prompt, ambiance is quite cozy and seems to be keeping busy. The food was just okay, sauces okay. The prices felt high for the quality. The chips were store bought and soggy, half already crumbled, likely had been sitting out all day, so that tainted our first impression a bit. The burrito was not bad. The shrimp tacos were okay/edible. The food is average, we are hoping they are working kinks out in their system and the food will improve over time. We eat here around 3-4 times a week, sometimes lunch dine-in and sometimes take-out. The food is consistent, delicious and generously portioned. We often split the taco salad for lunch and they are happy to provide extra service ware for our convenience. The SALSA BAR is one of my favorites in the city, especially now that so many are gone. The pico de gallo in the kitchen is flavorful but not spicy. The pico de gallo in the salsa bar has a wonderful kick and they also have fantastic pickled peppers and onions; a green, mild red and habanero round out the salsa bar offerings. I crave the pickled peppers often! We have not had a problem with the service. I would like to see fewer single use plastics. Sometimes we're given metal utensils and sometimes plastic for dine-in. All take-out containers and condiment cups are virgin plastic. We strive to dine-in when we can. read more
