    Carnitas Super Burrito (instagram: wooneats)
    Kiana S.

I ordered the Carnitas Super Burrito and it hit the spot. The carnitas was greasy in the best way--crispy, flavorful, and packed with that rich, savory goodness you want in a burrito. It was huge and super satisfying--definitely one of those meals where you're full but still tempted to keep eating. Everything was well-balanced, from the meat to the rice and beans, and the salsa added a nice kick without overpowering it.

If you're wandering through San Francisco and the craving for a massive, foil-wrapped masterpiece hits, Burritos Loco is a solid contender--provided you know exactly what to order. Here's the breakdown of what to double down on and what might leave you wanting a bit more. The Star: The Steak (Carne Asada) This is where Burritos Loco earns its name. Their steak is consistently the highlight of the menu. * The Flavor: It's got that perfect, smoky char that suggests the grill actually sees some action. It isn't just "gray meat" in a tube; it's seasoned with a punchy, savory blend that holds its own against the rice and beans. * The Texture: You get those coveted crispy edges without the meat being chewy or full of gristle. * Pro Tip: Get the Super Burrito with steak. The fattiness of the avocado and the saltiness of the steak create a top-tier SF mission-style experience. The Chicken (Pollo) While the steak is a home run, the chicken feels a bit more dry. * The Issue: It tends to be a bit on the dry side. Compared to the bold seasoning of the steak, the chicken can get lost in the shuffle of the other ingredients. * The Verdict: If you're trying to be "healthy" by choosing poultry, you might find yourself reaching for extra salsa just to give it some moisture and kick. It's not bad, but in a city with elite burrito competition, it doesn't quite stand out.

Been here a few times and the quality of food has been very good. They recently raised their prices. I ordered a regular beef burrito and when I got home I discovered it was 95% beans and rice with just a few tiny bits of beef. WHERE'S THE BEEF???

2nd time visiting. I had the Surf 'n Turf Burrito (super) which was excellent. The shrimp was juicy and sweet, perfectly cooked. The carne asada was flavorful and tender. All of the ingredients tasted super fresh, everything in good proportion. I scarfed the whole thing down and am now super full. Also had the horchata which was the best horchata I've had in forever. Nice strong cinnamon flavor and very creamy. I'm definitely hooked on this place now.

Super Burrito with Al Pastor, Rice, Pinto Beans, Cheese, Pico de Gallo, Sour Cream, and Guacamole

Not that I ever had anything against them, but for the longest time, I could never seem to remember Burrito Loco unless I was looking right at them. No particular reason why either, as when I do see this place, the first thought that always comes to mind is how I still need to check this place out. I'd like to think my forgetfulness is just because I pass by here so often that they just start to blending into the background or that I just don't really think of West Portal when I think of where to get a burrito. However, it's just me and my awful memory are to blame... Compared to other burrito joints that I've been to, especially in the Mission, Burrito Loco doesn't really feel like your typical taqueria and it's quite a bit smaller. However, they've got just about everything you could reasonable expect...and then some. Not only will you find the usual offerings of burritos, tacos, and nachos, but you can also opt for taco salads, nacho fries and chicken wings as well. Plus, their selection of meats is pretty legit, ranging from staples like carne asada, grilled chicken, and carnitas to comparatively less common options, such as al pastor, sauteed shrimp, and lengua (beef tongue). In all, a pretty a good variety of choices from a seemingly small, little shop! -- SUPER BURRITO with Al Pastor, Rice, Beans, Cheese, Pico de Gallo, Sour Cream, and Guacamole...$12.50 (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/burrito-loco-san-francisco-2?select=h7DgU9ZoNhDO5FkF_6nORw) Not as good as others I've had, but definitely not bad either. The burrito was decently full/plump and made for a sizable meal. However, I didn't think the al pastor was all that flavorful, as it felt more salty than seasoned to me. -- SUPER BEEF NACHOS - Tortilla Chops, Grilled Steak, Black Beans, Cheese, Pico de Gallo, Sour Cream, and Guacamole...$14 (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/burrito-loco-san-francisco-2?select=AHSBgZvVXv_tWJxy8zfP9w) Even with minimal expectations (nachos never hold up as to-go), this still disappointed. While it was topped with a generous amount of goodies, the chips are super thin, so they got ridiculously soggy (they even tore apart). I did like their steak, though, which was meaty and quite tasty. -- SUPER TACO with CARNITAS, Onion, Cilantro, Green Salsa, Cheese, Guacamole, and Sour Cream...$5.95 (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/burrito-loco-san-francisco-2?select=ZC_owDmUJ_7YHMflDqvUcQ) We may have got this on a whim (felt pricey), but it turned out great! The carnitas were fantastic and there was so much salsa, sour cream, and guacamole on it, using a form was practically a must. I worried the tortilla was going to be gummy, but it was perfectly fine. All in all, while nothing we had was anywhere near "bad", it'd be fair to say that my experiences here have been rather mixed. The burrito was hit or miss, the nachos were underwhelming, and the tacos ended up being better than I thought they'd be. Perhaps it's my fault for getting the nachos in spite of the concerns I knew I'd have, but hard to resist nachos in general. I can see why folks like this place, especially given how there aren't many burrito joints in the nearby area, but I'd be more inclined to come here when I see them and I'm craving a burrito than making a point of it when I can head to one of my usual haunts instead. THREE AND A HALF STARS rounded down.

    Super Carne Asada Fries

I love this little burrito shop. It's located right by the Muni tunnel, and there's also street parking right outside. I always call in to order, so I won't have to wait to pick up. If you're walking in from the neighborhood, you'll be enticed by the aroma of the grilled meats a block before you get there. My go to is the super surf and turf burrito. It really hits the spot with succulent shrimp and tasty chunks of Carne Asada. But this time, I just wanted a little snack for tonight, and save the rest for tomorrow. Was thinking of trying their taco salad, but decided to try the Carne Asada fries instead. I'm used to having smaller sized french fries in Carne Asada, but these lean more toward steak fries. I want to say, somewhere in between McDonald's fries, and steak fries. Either way, definitely filling, and has a good crunch when hot and fresh. Topping the fries is a generous portion of everything: Beans, cheese, meat, and especially the salsa, sour cream, and guacamole. Everything tastes super clean, but no mistaking that this is going to be a heavy meal lol. Golly, so many carbs, so plan to share, or have a small portion if you have the willpower to stop eating. Anyway, 100% would do this again.

Over the years I've found myself drawn to the other contender in the Mission way more than El Farolito, so I decided it was time to head back to try this legendary burrito shop. Getting to this location is super simple as we took BART and got off at the 24th Street Mission BART station and from there it's a very short walk of less than a block to get to El Farolito. Walking into the shop one is just slapped in the face with the beautiful smells of the carne asada cooking on the grill right by the door-it's wonderful. It's a modest place that you can definitely tell was built many years ago,so no overly modern amenities-this place cares about the food, not the ambiance. We ended up going with a couple of super burritos of Carne Asada ($11.25) & a regular burrito of Al Pastor($10.25) & also added two tacos one with Al Pastor and one with Carne Asada($4.75) They had beers at $4.75-so we grabbed a couple of Modelos. First the tacos-they were just ok,the tacos were crunchy and I don't know kind of gave Taco Bell vibes. Burritos though-that's a whole different animal. The burrito was so well made from the chew of the tortilla to the seasoning of the carne asada to the perfect balance and mix of all the other ingredients.I judge a burrito harshly if the mix isn't right and you don't get every ingredient in every bite and the mix at El Farolito was flawless. The price point was pretty impressive as well. In closing, El Farolito has always been in the mix as one of the top burrito spots in the Mission, and I can say with confidence that it's in my Top 2 in San Francisco currently. It's an incredible burrito and a true "must-visit" spot when visiting San Francisco. P.S. Just a slight heads up when visiting , it's not the safest neighborhood in the world, so just keep your head up when visiting-this is a place one visits for the food experience not the ambiance.

After waiting about 30 minutes, I assumed my order would be ready when I arrived. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. They don't actually prepare the order ahead of time you still have to wait in the long line, then pay and apparently have the order made afterward. Honestly, what is the point of calling ahead if you're still required to stand in the same line and wait? I understand that they may be busy, but the whole purpose of calling ahead should be to make the process quicker and more convenient. The food may be good, but the ordering process was frustrating and completely defeated the purpose of calling ahead. Two stars from me based on the experience.

A few people were already in there eating, and we know this place is good, as a few others in our group and I have been here multiple times. The Taqueria is typical of any other, with bench-style chairs for folks to sit on, a water station, and workers cooking it up in the kitchen. I wasn't too hungry, so I grabbed a Super Lengua Taco, while my friends grabbed burritos, we ended up grabbing 3 complimentary chips and guac/salsa with our order and the food came out pretty quickly. When I saw my Taco I forgot how much they stuffed it and wow, two of these would've filled me up just like a taco; there was so much Lengua that it kept falling off after every bite. The flavors all came together and I scruffed down the whole thing after about 6+ bites! Definitely a place to come to if you're looking for a full meal, or something to snack on!
