I love this place. I'm a fan of the San Antonio taqueria scene El Taco is a place I usually come to at least once a week. The fresh salsa bar is one of the best I've been to and the place just delivers consistently good food. My go-to is the chicken fajita taco with avocado slices in it.. but the El Norteno is also excellent whether you get it with chicken or beef. This is one of the very few taco places where you get a truly tender, flavorful marinated beef when you order a taco with beef. So many places are serving unseasoned chewy cheap cuts of meat.. not here. It's really good but the grilled chicken is also awesome. read more

Nestled in a corner of a strip mall in Stone Oak, this taqueria has a quaint feel to it. With plenty of sitting room, the music engulfs the listening ear. We enjoy this little place quite a bit! They are always polite, friendly, and the food is great. It's our go-to breakfast taco spot for sure, and it is a few minutes longer of a drive than other places. We have occasionally ordered delivery as well and it's been quick. Eating in the restaurant is great as well-- clean and bright and well kept. They recently updated their seating, and you can just tell they have a lot of pride in their work. There are actually a few El Taco locations, but they do not seem to be affiliated. This one is the best location, according to my daughter. It's in Stone Oak Village, a strip mall. This is my daughter's favorite place in San Antonio for street tacos. On Mondays, that's the special of the day. She gets the el pastor and chicken. I tried both and liked the chicken the best. The chicken is marinated in lime juice and is unique and flavorful. The pork was a bit too fatty for my liking... maybe I just got a bad one. Since my daughter makes fabulous tacos herself, I opted for something light and different. I ordered the chicken fajita salad. The menu indicated that it comes with chips and pico, but it didn't. Instead, it was topped with tomatoes. And there was beans (that weren't mentioned on the menu) at the bottom. Also, I would've thought that chicken "fajita" would include onions, but it didn't. With maybe a teaspoon of guacamole, the salad was bland and fell flat, especially for the price. I will say that the taco bowl that it came in was fantastic. Menu is a mix of classic and modernized tacos, along with plates for breakfast and lunch. My go-to bfast taco is potato, egg, and cheese, with bacon- go big or go home, right? This spot has a few specialty tacos with a bunch of different stuff thrown in. The "Dumpster" has a little bit of everything (potato, egg, bean, bacon, cheese, carne guisada)- fun mix of flavors, but I felt their carne guisada was lacking the savory punch of spices I love. The "L Taco special" (potato, beef fajita, cheese, avocado)- solid. My mom digs this taco, the creaminess of the avocado keeps it from being dry. The Norteno is a classic done well (beans, jack cheese, fajita, and guac), better with chicken than beef, or it gets too heavy to me. A better version than Las Palapas! Service is friendly and they have a loyalty program/stamp card. In addition to having a ton of different tacos, you also have your choice of THREE types of tortillas. L Taco in stone Oak is easy to miss since it's right off the intersection of Stone Oak & Huebner, but it's so worth doing a u-turn to get to, haha. I've come a couple of times & have tried an assortment of their tacos. Each of them have been delicious in their own way. My favorite happens to be the migas taco & plain papa con huevo taco topped with one of their many salsas. As far as the atmosphere goes it is very casual & typically has people moving quickly whether they are dining in or picking up. So don't feel bad if you're coming in early in the morning still in your pjs. I'm certainly guilty of that, hehe. The only reason I'm giving this taco shop four stars instead of five is due to the price. Some of their tacos, particularly their speciality tacos, are a little on the pricier side. Stopped in for lunch yesterday. Perfect for us. My hubby has to have breakfast and i'm one that can go right into eating lunch. My hubby got the barbacoa and a dumpster tacos. He said they were really good. I got the carne aside street tacos. Very yummy. I'll definitely go back and try out the different items on the menu. They have a small salsa bar.. I would've liked to see some cilantro and onions there. One salsa we really enjoyed was the roasted salsa. Great flavor. That one was my favorite. The staff was super friendly. I watched the ladies help the gentlemen in front of us who had never been there and wasn't really familiar with Mexican food. They explained everything to him in great detail of what things were. My overall experience with this restaurant has been very pleasant! I've picked up breakfast tacos about three times and have always enjoyed the food! I grew up about 15 minutes from the Texas and Mexico border so breakfast tacos are kinda like an everyday thing there so to find a place that does them good is always a happy surprise. The carne guisada tacos with cheese are absolutely amazing! The meat is nice and tender and the gravy is absolutely delicious! If you are a little ambitious go for something different like the "loser taco" or the "L Dumpster" and live a little on the wild side! With some kinda out there combinations, you might just find something you like! I have gone at various times in the morning and the service is always quick, there are always places to sit, and the coffee ALWAYS smells good! Would never have stopped at a place called El Taco, in Stone Oak, and expected much but it was open with good reviews. Shame on me. Probably the worst excuse for a taco joint I can recall. Salsa was bland at best. Queso? I'm not exaggerating here... if I threw a brick of velveta in the microwave it would have been better. Tacos were okay, if you're desperate, but don't expect much and I wouldn't touch anything else with the exception of the borracho beans. They were good. Finished those and tossed the leftovers. New management has arrived here. That fact alone is neither here nor there, but this is the first time I've not had a good time here. Why one star? Ordering takeout I got some steak nachos for the first time, having previously gotten the normal beef. I received stale chips that had obviously been microwaved. While that sucks, upon inspection I noticed that they had been microwaved INSIDE the styrofoam to-go box. The box itself had microwave burns/deterioration...also the steak was far gone from anything considered fresh. Anyway, because my actual health was put at risk I'm re-reviewing to give a single star.
