Yesterday, I had some of the best tacos I've had in a while. The night before yesterday, I had some very mediocre tacos and lackluster nachos at Lazo's in Chicago. So I woke up Sunday morning on a mission to make up for them. I pulled up the Yelp app, entered "al pastor" and El Mirador was one of the first results. Ask and you shall receive! We pulled into the tiny strip mall where El Mirador is located, came inside, and a sweet waitress asked if we were there to eat or wanted to place an order for takeout. We decided to stay and she told us to take a seat. She brought out menus along with a small bowl of chips and salsa. The chips were good and the salsa was great. It was relatively spicy and quite fresh. I took note of the Mexican breakfast section but decided to go with what I came for - tacos. I had somewhat of a hard time deciding because they had a number of options. I settled for 1 Al Carbon, 1 Al Pastor, 1 Chorizo and 1 Lengua, all with an abundance of onions and cilantro. I also asked for all of them to be topped with sour cream, cheese and avocado. Every ingredient was fresh and each of the meats had a very distinct and pleasant taste without being overly greasy. My two favorites were the Al Carbon and the Chorizo. We rounded off the meal with two medium Horchatas with ice and a large slice of Flan for dessert. If I could do it over, I would go large on the beverage and skip the ice and the Flan. It was a huge slice, but not that impressive. Save your calories and your cash! 4 Tacos (with extra toppings), 1 Burrito, 2 Horchata and 1 Flan came to a little over $25, so $30 with tip for 2 people. This definitely satisfied my taco craving and I will return to get some more of the Chorizo and to try some other meats. I would give five stars but my order was incorrect twice. The first time they forgot the cheese (no biggie) and remade the entire order of tacos (unexpected, but appreciated). The second time the sour cream was missing, but a large plate of it was quickly brought out when I asked for it again. read more

Good food. Reasonable prices (cheap!). Friendly service. Very clean and bright location. Between the Al Pastor, Al Carbon, Chicken, Chorizo tacos the hubs I shared, the chicken taco was definitely the best. The beef and pork was a little on the dry side, but the chicken was fabulous--juicy and flavorful. The corn tortillas are fresh as are the onions and cilantro. Beef Milanesa Torta was just ok as well. I don't know if I'm just not a fan of tortas or maybe I just haven't had any really good ones to compare. I just liked the beef and bread, I could have done without all the other "stuff". We tried the Beef Sope--I really liked the cornmeal "pancake" it was served on. The beef was really flavorful, but a bit chewy. The Red and Green Salsas on the table were also just "ok" as well. Ok flavor, but just not enough "oomph" for me. The Horchata was good--ice cold. Sadly I had to pass on the flan (that might be another day) They are also open at 8 and serve Mexican style breakfast--I think that is worth a future visit. read more

Our quest for the best Taco Tuesday continued, but alas this place did not qualify as they do not have a special. However the food was so good I am compelled to write a review. Had been here once before I am 99% this is a mom and pop shop. Standard Mexican fare-Tacos Burritos Tortas Quesadillas etc. Small bowl of chips and salsa on the table when we were seated. Salsa was good and food came with three bottles of homemade hot sauce which I love. The avocado sauce was great with a nice kick although the verde should be a bit hotter. In the spirit of taco Tuesday I ordered a three taco plate which came with rice and beans. The chicken taco came with lettuce tomato and the pastor and steak came with onion cilantro. Good filling-fresh toppings-overall above average but not to die for. Rice was ok but the refried beans were the BEST I have had in a looong time. That is what got me to four stars from three. My family ordered similar items-kid had a burrito dinner with rice and beans on the side and it was full of steak beans and cheese-I had a few bites it was great. They dont have a bar so no margaritas :-( but I believe they had horchata and standard sodas and jarritos and some desserts. Price was right in the sweet spot not too cheap not too expensive. Seemed clean and the service was quick and friendly. I am not going to crave this place every day but if you are in the mood for a quick reasonable meal that will fill you up and you want to support the local economy you wont be disappointed! read more

More proof that good tacos can be had in the burbs. It seems like Addison is the spot so far! I was craving some al pastor after zumba and the master rump shaker, Ericka A. suggested El Mirador. It was super close so off I went... The al pastor was pretty good, served with your traditional onion, cilantro and lime. The rice and beans that accompanied the tacos were not so great. The beans were alright but the rice was flavorless. The salsa was really disappointing. I think they took a can of tomato sauce and added sprigs of cilantro, dried peppers and spice to it. Blech. The sauces that accompanied the tacos were good and seemed to be house made so I didn't quite understand why the salsa was so bad. This is a no frills place; the prices are reasonable and the escabeche and the telemundo are free! If you have a taste for some al pastor, give El Mirador a shot. read more

So I was a little wary when we went in and nobody was there. It was pretty late on a Friday so maybe that is why. It turned out pretty well, though. We came in and got seated right away. It was very clean, which may be because it was the end of the night, but either way - clean is a good thing. The gentleman working the counter brought us menus and asked what we wanted to drink. They didn't have lemonade, which is what the husband wanted, but they had horchata and another, red juice type drink that the server offered to let us try before buying, which was nice. The food was a step up from average - I liked my ground beef burrito a lot and the rice and beans were not bad. The steak was pretty good, based on the bite of that I tried, too. We did wish the hot sauce was a little hotter but that is a minor thing. In general, good and friendly service, decent food, and somewhere we would return to. read more

Been coming here for over a year. The food is consistently Good, thoughtfully prepared and possibly prepared fresh daily. Every time I come the rice is so perfect- not mushy or hard like other places. The chilaquiles rojos are my favorite. They are spicy and cheesy and melt in your mouth. I liked this place. Nothing extraordinary, but very solid. Clean, friendly service & decent prices. They had a special on chicken tamales so I tried one of those and a steak burrito The tamale was actually very good. Nice flavor to the chicken Burrito was solid too....steak wasn't too greasy as it can sometimes be and not very fatty either. Beans were actually good too, nice and creamy. About a year ago, right before I moved, I bought a slew of Restaurant-dot-com gift certificates with the idea I'd explore some eateries around my new 'digs. Well, no one's been very adventurous, so this past Tuesday I forced my mom to come out with me and pick from my gift certificates. She chose Taqueria el Mirador. We were there for an early lunch, and there was only one other customer in the restaurant. It's pretty spacious and open with a definite neighborhood feel (magazine rack in the corner, little candies and fruit for sale at the front counter). The waitress/server (owner?) seated us, got our drink orders, and menus pretty promptly. She also brought over some chips and salsa (with a bit of a kick and fresh cilantro). A little boy (her son?) also came out a bit later carrying a tray with another dish of chips. Adorable! It was clear we'd both have to eat a LOT to spend the required $20 on our gift certificate. Mom and I ordered quesadillas to share (one chicken, one marinated steak - $2.50 each). Both were good (I enjoyed the chicken more), but the steak was slippery and chewy. It was pretty impossible to cut with our forks (no knives were given with the cutlery). We each ordered a burrito plate (mom got chicken, and I got steak - $7 or $8 each). Neither were very flavorful, so I used a lot of sauce. Still, my steak was nicely cooked, not chewy, and the burrito was huge! Our server was friendly and attentive, checking in on us and also bringing more drinks. She explained the bill at the end and how she deducted the gift certificate. She even calculated the 18% gratuity to the side, but left it up to me to add it in. We both left STUFFED. In all it's a homey, spacious, family-owned place that is both family and budget friendly! I gave them a 1 star not because of the food. That was fine. Today I went there with a Restaurant.com gift certificate that I bought 5 weeks ago. They did not want to honor it. I had to argue with the owner for 10-15 minutes. He finally backed down. In the end, he lost because if they had redeemed it w/o an argument, I would have left far more that the 18% tip that was automatically added on. The food was quite good, and I would have given them 5 stars, 4 for the food, and an extra one because they had fresh squeezed OJ. I will never eat there again, but I am always 100% honest in my reviews on Yelp and other sites. I ordered asada tacos, and they were very standard. The red salsa was good, and the green even better. My son did not like the chicken on his tacos, but I ate the other half of one of his, and while it wasn't as good as most chicken tacos, the amount of chicken on them was very generous, and I think it was thigh meat. My wife ordered huevos rancheros, and was very pleased with the sauce they used. She very much enjoyed the rice and the beans, and they served them with 4 or 5 corn tortillas. She was not happy that the eggs were cooked over easy, as she does not like runny yolk. I finished off her entree, and found it to be fine. Every other place she's ordered them cooked them scrambled or hard, and they really should have asked how she wanted them cooked, but really it was more her mistake for not specifying, and really over easy really is the default. The fresh squeezed OJ was really nice. Again, I'm not going to lie about the quality of the food just because the owner was a jerk, but there are oodles of taquerias in Addison and nearby communities. I appreciate that the owner is a small businessperson, and decided that the discount program that he had affiliated with was something that he had decided was a mistake, and had chosen to no longer participate, but refusing to honor a previously agreed to deal is not ethical. read more

Not a bad taqueria. They are fast with their service and the food appears fresco. It is a basic strip mall location but serves the community well with a good menu choice and a better alternative to corporate choices that seem to be all over. Have passed by this place many times finally went in last week the chips and salsa were good. Their food? Gross!!! The chiles rellenos were not spicy the rice and beans cant even describe. The carne a la tampiqueña was so bad it felt like i was chewing on a rubber band never going back no wonder that place is always empty. read more
