The challenge...get lunch for under $15 within walking distance to my job. So many options for this budget from tacos to enchiladas to quesadillas. Soups, salads and chalupas also would fill the bill. I opted for the Rio Grande Valley Grilled Tacos. Grilled corn tortillas filled with chicken and Monterey Jack cheese, served with rice, beans and salad. Loved the warm chips and salsa that rounded out lunch. So easy to order and then walk to pick up lunch. Lots of parking also available. A great place to pick up lunch. Will have to dine in someday. read more

I test Mexican restaurants first by their chips and refried beans. Solid staples but so often a miss in Houston. Sylvia's started off strong. Warm table roasted, salsa was also pretty good. Service was great. Friendly and quick. Not a lot of people here at lunch today so any easy get. The ambiance is great. Warm and inviting. Great Mexico-like feel. Food wise The traditional tortilla soup was much pretty good and chicken does not come with it automatically like most gringo places. However unlike traditional tortilla soups everything was preloaded in the bowl. Not a big downside. I might have picked the wrong entree. The Enchiladas Morelias. The red chile flavor was off, maybe a bit over cooked but worst the prep killed it since the cheese wasn't melted. The menu looks compelling and extensive so I'll try it again. Next time I'll go for El Paso Enchiladas. I grew up eating Mexican food in El Paso so the bar will be high. read more

We had a group of six for dinner on a weeknight. The place is cute and not noisy. Service was pleasant but very slow, and I suppose that had to do with an automatic 20% tip being added to our bills. I'd rather be allowed to judge quality of service and tip accordingly. Food/drink was hit & miss and overpriced. Entrees and dessert were good but no one liked the salsas, meat not tender, margaritas subpar compared to similar restaurants. read more

Had a really nice Father's Day breakfast/brunch. Everyone enjoyed their dishes. The standout was the chorizo and eggs. Excellent flavor, and not too greasy. And, while I'm all in on nice sized portions, the whole table commented on "just the right amount of food". Will do that again! read more

This place is a bit below average . Nothing special about it. They had one waiter attending to 8 tables . He looked overwhelmed . He was also handling to go orders. I ordered the Donna it was just mid . Lupe tortilla knocks this place out the park. The enchiladas there are far superior imo. They also need Coke Zero option which should be a regular thing by now. The service is not good. You take a long have a pick up five minutes, but I'm waiting minutes but it's not ready in my order.

Sylvia's continues to be one of my absolute Houston favorites, and I look for any excuse to eat there as often as possible. The food is always amazing--truly top-notch--and the customer service is on a whole different level. From the moment the hostess welcomes you at the door to seeing our favorite waitress/bartender, Rosario (who always gets a giant hug from me!), it already feels special. And Daniel, one of the managers, is just as wonderful. They both make every visit to Sylvia's feel like you're coming home to family. As for the food--wow. The guacamole you can build your own way is a must, the carne guisada is incredibly flavorful, and you absolutely, positively cannot come to Sylvia's without trying the chocolate tres leches. The food and service are ok, but what is the deal with that terrible drain backup odor in the restrooms?!! I found it to be overpowering in the men's and my wife found it to be just as grotesque in the womens! It literally smells like ---t and I'm not being rude or exaggerating. It's too nice of a place to not get that taken care of. When I worked for a restaurant we put high powered liquid chlorine down the restroom drains and the bar drains as well regularly. Too late for that here. They need to have those drains flushed out by rescue rooter or some similar company. That odor definitely takes away from the experience there. read more

My last time coming here. Let me preface this by saying, I've been going here for years, even the Eldridge location as well. They have never been the best, but at least dependable and consistent. That all changed tonight. The food was mediocre, they screwed up veggie enchiladas. Like not cooked and tasted weird. That maybe I could forgive. But telling me I short paid my bill even though both my father and I counted the money before we put in the bill was unforgivable. We both counted $140. The waitress came back 5m later and said we had short paid the bill. I'm 48, that's never happened to me. I didn't argue, put another $20 in, and left. But that $20 will cost this place a lifelong loyal customer. Either it was a sole act of a shady waitress or it's a new policy to cheat customers, either way, it's horrible. I've been coming here for about 4 years, but recently the food has become so bland. I mean completely flavorless. Maybe a new chef. If you add the increase in prices, it's just not worth it. $18.75 for the Brownsville. The taco meat had no flavor. The cheese enchiladas...zero flavor and the inside cheese wasn't even melted all the way. I only like cold fresh salsa. I don't know why our Mexican restaurants have adopted to this warmed salsa, but theirs is probably the best if I have no choice. Their frozen margs are pretty delicious as well. I guess if I want flavor I'll go to El Patio or Los Tios. They both also have cold salsa. Restaurants should give you a choice. read more

Sylvia's is a neighborhood place we always pass and have never tried. Last night we had the craving for Mexican and decided to give it a try! It is an enchilada kitchen so the majority of menu items are enchiladas for those who do not like enchiladas. With that being said I definitely think it is worth a try! I really love how the menu was broken up by North and South so it was a good choice between Tex-Mex and more authentic. I had the Donna and wow was it yummy. It had ground beef on the inside and had a great flavor. The margarita was also delicious! Overall great place with reasonable prices. read more

We were originally going to a restaurant a couple blocks away but when we got there they had no power. I called Sylvia's and spoke with a young lady and asked if they were open since we saw other stores with no power. She said they were and when I asked if she could seat a table of 8 she said yes. We were literally 5 mins away and when we walked in she had our table waiting!! A great way to start. I've been here several times and the food never disappoints. From Shrimp enchiladas to Monterrey Jack cheese enchiladas to carne guisada, tortilla soup and kids stuff it was all top notch. The flavors were outstanding but not overwhelming. We had 3 queso experts (2 and 6 year olds) and they went through 2 bowls and gave it a cheesy thumbs up.. We live in Kingwood so don't get down here very often but when we're here Sylvia's will be our go to place. read more

I just got out of this resturant. Like any other Mexican place we got complimentary chips and salsa. Chips were hot but salsa was watery. One of the worst salsa i ever had. We ordered cheese Chihuahua enchilada and chicken Mexico City. They both were horrible in taste and my wife hardly ate anything from her plate. Went to the SYLVIA'S ENCHILADA KITCHEN on Woodway at Voss for the first time today and it was fabulous! Not only was our server, Valerie, over the top kind and helpful with the menu, but we got to meet Sylvia in person! What an incredible woman and restaurant powerhouse! She even asked the staff to bring a couple things for us to taste from the kitchen! Who does this?! Everything we had was wonderful... This is not TexMex like you would normally find in Houston. On this occasion this was a big party of 18 and I think it was more. Despite being a big party, service was definitely great & quick. I personally was just not a fan of certain plates. To start off the Fajita taco wasn't bad but it came just with a side of guacamole over lettuce. No salsa or anything. The "mole enchiladas" were on the sweeter side. This plate came with two and side of rice and beans. I chose the charro beans. Rice was cold not even warm to begin with. The beans weren't too shabby but a little on the salty side. "Guadalajara enchiladas, came with three with rice and beans also. Most plates had beans and rice. That plate reminded me a bit of flautas where it was topped off with some sort of salsa, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. Shredded chicken in the inside, nice flavor to it. I think I enjoyed most were the fajita quesadillas. Same meat as the fajita taco and melted cheese. A good balance but also no salsa to accompany it. Sopa de fideo just typical nothing to crazy. Now the Tampiquena rating was better than most dishes. Meat was at a medium temp, really good. The enchilada was just okay, too much cheese for my preference. If most dishes had the same consistency in flavors and being fresh/hot, wouldn't be as bad. Stated before, service was quick and they were nice & patient despite being a huge party. read more

The Eldredge location is, and has been for many years, our go-to location for Mexican food. Daniel is the manager there, and he will ensure you have the best experience possible. From the beef fajita nachos (NO ONE does them better!) to the margaritas and cold beer, everything on the menu is a delicious experience. The portions were small for Texas and especially for $14. That's my quibble mainly. For a place known for their enchiladas, they're just decent. You are basically paying for their rent in Memorial, but they've always been pricey even at their previous location in West Houston. I just went here for happy hour because I was nearby and didn't want to engage rush hour. They did have multiple dishes for $5 during Taco Tuesday happy hour but not much was vegetarian. Their drink specials were not bad. Four dollars for the house margarita. Small but tasty. Not too loaded with alcohol. The clientele was mostly older and white, I guess befitting the neighbourhood it was in. read more
