Finally stopped in at this place just 2 miles from home. It certainly is authentic Mexican! And we'll certainly be back. I tried the steak tostada, which had some of the most plentiful & flavorful carne asada steak! The cheese enchilada wasn't overpowered with too much cheese, so nicely done. We've had better food from taco bell. The ground beef was terrible. The enchiladas were bland. The tortilla was burnt. They didnt follow the instructions on the order. Overall, it was a terrible supper for $71. But the doordasher was really great. read more

Moved to west side of Indy about a year ago. This was the third Mexican place we have tried in the Avon area. This is the only place we have eaten at multiple times. I am on a mission to try all of the taquerias on the West Side of Indy. Taqueria Vargas is my numero uno at this moment. We had 7 tacos and a huge margarita with chips and salsa for ~$30. The al pastor was SO GOOD! I loved the azada too! I especially loved the garnishes, radish, lime, and grilled onion as well. They put four different salsas in squeeze bottles on the table for us. The two that were in the typical mustard and ketchup bottles were Hot Hot Hot This place is unassuming, informal, and low-key with excellent service. We will definitely return. read more

I love it here! I went for lunch on a Monday and sat at a booth. The place is very authentic with a Latin feel. The food is always flavorful. The $2 margaritas are what brings me in! The service is good as the servers are super friendly and pleasant. Parking is free out front. I usually visit this place at least one or two times per week. I'm a fan & highly recommend! read more

Delicious and FAST!!! Authentic Mexican food with some great service. Visiting from Baltimore to see family and friends. Friend said we have to go to one of his favorites in the area. He wasn't kidding. This place is not only delicious but FAST! We were seated immediately, approached for drink orders right away, and had them back at our table within minutes. Same for food. The server was quick, polite, and on top of it. When we got our drinks, we knew what we wanted and he wasted no time at all getting our order in. No joke... within 5 minutes of placing the order we had freshly cooked hot food on our table! Incredible. It was almost concerning initially because of how fast it was but everything was amazing. Service was fast. Food was delicious. The location is tucked away in the corner of a group of buildings but inside is all authentic. They make you feel like part of the family. Food was good as usual. I remember visiting this restaurant every week when they first opened. There are a few changes to the inside and some changes to menu prices but otherwise food is still good. They now have an alcohol menu which they didn't have a few years ago. Their salsa and chips are good and the salsa has a kick to it so if you're not a fan of heat, you might want to eat in moderation. I got the carne asada tacos and they were delicious. They have some sauce bottles with a green and red sauce and the red sauce is extra spicy and the green is mild. read more

Wow. When I say at this point I'm a Mexican food connoisseur, I don't mean it lightly. I have tried so many places from commercial to main steam to authentic to hole in the wall and this is at the top of my list. Not only is the food all homemade fresh in house, but it's so cheap for a great amount of food. The staff is kind and friendly. The restaurant is very clean and small, kind of a hole in the wall place but I'm not sure why because it's the best! 10/10 recommend. read more

We did a pickup order through doordash this past weekend. My aunt lives nearby and I had never even realized Taqueria Vargas was right at the corner. There was a slight mixup up with our order, but I called and got it fixed right away. We ended up with steak instead of chicken and my aunt won't do red meat. They were quick to fix it. The queso was excellent! I am a queso snob and the queso blanco has been my favorite as of recent. I got it and the guacamole, which was good, but not excellent. I ordered the shrimp and chicken with cheese and held the rice. And of course because it was covered in queso blanco it was a great choice! The shrimp was very good. I saved the chicken for leftovers today. It was a ton of food between our 3 meals. They gave us a lot of salsa choice, but never having been I didn't know what they were. The green one smelled hot so I passed, but the 2nd green one may have been mixed with guacamole and it disguised the smell. I now call it green fire. My husband didn't believe how how it was and he tried the first one and also said it was pretty spicy. I would pass on these next time. My aunt enjoyed her chicken fajitas and had leftover for today. I've driven by this place before but it's never at a meal time and we don't always remember it but we came across it on DoorDash and decided to give it a try! My husband and I were craving Mexican and this looked like a good local option. It was great! I ordered the pollo chorizo to change up my usual order from Mexican restaurants and I liked it a lot. There was rice included as well. The chicken is just one big piece that you have to cut. I wish it was cut up like arrow con pollo but it was still awesome. It was topped with chorizo and queso. My husband got arrows con pollo which tasted about like it does at any Mexican restaurant. Very good but exactly what we are used to. We got queso dip as well to go with the chips they included and it stayed melted and warm the whole trip! read more

I didn't get any food because although the drinks were on special for $2.50 my green apple and the peach margarita were watered down and tasted like cheap liquor. What's WORSE was the $10.99 carnitos (clay pot) drink that was disgusting! Tasted like the grapefruit was old and rotten and still squeezed. Just wasn't mixed right. I recommend going to Los Chilaquiles restaurant which is less than 10 minutes away from this restaurant! $10.99 for a baby drink is ridiculous. It's $14.99 for a large. And if you want salt on the rim, make sure you ASK for it. The place was packed tho so maybe the food was good but I wouldn't know cos I wouldn't be going back to try. read more

Have been looking for a place with some good burritos..... and I think we just found it. I ordered the burrito ranchero and my boyfriend ordered the Colorado burrito. They were so good, big and fulfilling we couldn't finish them. Loved it especially with the green salsa that it came with. It had a really good kick and flavor. Their Verde sauce is some of the best I've ever had and I prefer their authentic Mexican cuisine to what I've had in the southwest and California. Got tacos delivered for dinner: Lengua, Asada and Al Pastor. The Lengua tacos were some of the best I've had. The Asada was a bit dry, but still ok. The Al Pastor taco was great. The meat came with a pineapple sauce already cooked in. The mix of sweet and savory was great. I saw they have cabeza, tripa, etc that I can't wait to try soon! read more

If you're ordering online, then stick to just tacos. We placed an order tonight through door dash for three chorizo tacos, one chicken tamale, two chalupa's, one enchilada, and one burrito as well as one large cheese dip. The chorizo tacos were authentic great tacos. However the rest of the food, was very underwhelming. The two chalupas were unrecognizable and didn't contain any meat. The enchilada and burrito were both smothered in a salsa, which smelled and tasted more like marianna than anything. Lastly we ordered a large cheese (queso), which was fine except for the fact that they gave us a small tiny bag of chips. If you're craving mexican food, there are better delivery places. read more

It was my first time coming to this place leaving Andy's nail shop. I was greeted and handed a menu to place my to go order. I ordered and paid for my food and took a seat while I waited for my food . I received my food and proceeded to my car thinking I'm about to dive in because I was starving. I looked up and a lady is outside my car window. I'm not sure if the lady was a manager but I'm sure she was . She asked me if I received my food and I said yeah and showed her the food . She said I needed to come back in and pay. I told her I did pay and she said let me see receipt. I'm digging in my pockets to recover it but I noticed I didn't get one and I only had the change from my order. She asked again let me see receipt . I told her I didn't receive one . She told me I need to come back in and pay . I just looked at her as she kept telling me I need to pay . I got back out my car and just handed her the bag . She snatched it away from me and I followed her back inside. I just asked her if I could have my money back as we headed back inside . The young lady that took my payment and the young man that handed me my food looked very confused. One asked wait what happened and the other said I'm sorry and just handed me a 20 back. The older lady that came and harassed me asking for a receipt just walked to the back with the food and I believe she's the one who told the person at the register to just give me my money back even though she was dead wrong. She was very rude and her attitude was nasty . She didn't apologize or anything . My mind was blown because you don't approach somebody like that . I couldn't give zero stars but at least the cashier and the person that handed me my food felt bad and apologized. It's very disappointing because I heard the food was great but customer service is everything . That's insane to accuse someone of walking out and not paying before asking questions. read more

Got food poisoning from the steak tacos at this place. From reading some of the other bad reviews it seems they have bad food handling issues especially with the steak. Very good tacos. Been here twice now. Very friendly and quick service. Have had the cabeza, chorizo, lengua, asada and pastor. All very good though three of us that had takeout decided the asada we prob wouldn't get again. Very good salsas included with a lil baggy of chips. Pretty fat tacos but for 2.25 they could be a little fatter. Regardless I will be back!! read more
