Since it has been over 10 years since my first review of Tastebuds, I wanted to update and confirm that this is still one of, if not our favorite spots for dinner. The staff is like family and they work seamlessly together to provide a high level of service and delicious made from scratch meals and desserts. My favorite has always been the petite filet. We got seated fast. Our waitress was really good & the menu offers nice variety. Ambiance is not very fancy and seating is tight but nice. We got the mushroom tart app. It was ok but not much flavor. The scallops w/ butternut squash risotto was good. Their seafood was cooked perfectly but I didn't see or taste BN squash. The seafood trio was good but very small. The filet steak was very tender but super peppery. Sides were all good. My wife is a huge tiramisu fan, but has high standards. We tried it and loved it. We both thought it was the best we have had, outside of those in Italy. It had the coffee flavor but cold, creamy texture. The creme brûlée was good. The top had the toasted sugar top and a cold vanilla creme underneath but it was super shallow & in an oblong dish, making it tiny and hard to get on the spoon. Cute little breakfast spot with good service. I had heard that the cinnamon rolls were the must have. They're good for sharing. We got one for the three of us to start. It was good but not the best I've ever had. Warm and soft with a nice cream cheese frosting on top. My brioche cinnamon French toast was solidly mediocre. It wouldn't have been great anyway but it wasn't hot when served - the butter didn't even melt when it hit the bread. The eggs Benedict was decent, but the home fries weren't super crispy. The biscuits and gravy were decent but far from the best we've ever had. I'm glad we tried it and it is good enough but doesn't live up to my usual local favorites. read more

We are so happy to have found Tastebuds. We had brunch with traveling friends and enjoyed everything. The coffee was a rich and strong, the ingredients were fresh, and the menu had something for everyone. We ordered a giant cinnamon bun, which was served warm. We were so pumped, and it was big enough for 2-4 people. Everything else was delicious and included some of the following: pumpkin pancakes with spiced, toasted pecans, an omelet with caramelized onions, an eggs benedict with quinoa and portabella mushrooms. Personally, I tend to look for the kind of apocryphal seafood joint that claims Melville as a past diner, that boasts a worn floor scraped by wooden legs, and where the chowder's secret ingredients may or may not be incidental flakes of a crusty sailor's salt-dried skin. That would make a good story. But here, the only story is that the food is really, really good. It was a delight to be reunited with New England clam chowder, especially given that my last hundred or so bowls of Midwest chowder must've been cans full of chewy clams and glue-like broth. This was light, fresh, and well-seasoned. My main course was the fish taco plate. The taco fish of choice is scrod- i.e., the latest catch, which locals claim (accurately) is good year round- crusted in panko. I was full but couldn't stop eating, and my next culinary victim, the brownie a la mode, was texturally perfect for the few brief minutes it lasted. It even included fresh mint leaves, which for me blew the roof off the house, so to speak (not that I usually say such things let alone advocate the use of metaphoric explosives). The vibe here is that of a gift shop where almost everything is meant to be eaten rather than seen. The olive walls and mahogany tables create a cozy feel and there's a bar area off to one side (Sam Adams and Blue Moon on tap). The music is modern but organic folk, which New Englandizes the experience to the max. Which nobody can deny. Unfortunately, it'll be some time before I can get back here. But in my imagination, I'll be eating a hundred other meals from the menu... salads of scallop or salmon, baked haddock with grilled asparagus, tiramisu, grapenut custard, and the sandwiches which I have already gastrovoyeuristically enjoyed through my mom and sister. read more

We've dined at Tastebuds several times. The food has always been good, but the service has been slow. We went there last week for a somewhat special occasion and the service was so bad that it ruined the entire evening -- wish we'd stayed home... We had a party of 6 and based on past experience we expected slow service, but hoped that it wouldn't be bad given it was a Tuesday night -- we were dead wrong. Not only did it take over an hour to see our first entree, but the six meals trickled out at an unacceptable pace. Here are the gory details: The two dishes for the young men arrived first (the salmon and seared scallops on a Caesar Salad) -- despite the fact that there were 3 women at the table (no chivalry at Tastebuds). Fortunately, we insisted they eat without waiting for us. Next came my meal (chicken picatta) and then my wife's meal (scampi) arriving 10+ minutes late. By then, the men had finished their meals, so we started eating ours as the young women looked on. 10 Minutes later, my daughter's girl friend's dinner came out (pasta primavera). I was done eating and at this point I told the server to tell the owner that "we would never be coming back to the restaurant again." A few minutes later, my daughter's meal finally arrived (grilled salmon on a house salad) - 75 minutes after she ordered it. As we finished up, the server did offer us a free drink or desert because of the disgraceful service, but we declined. All we wanted to do was to get out of Tastebuds as fast as possible -- we'd already been there for 2 hours. I'm not sure how any restaurant that has been in business for more than a few weeks can take 23 minutes to trickle out 6 plates. I assume there was a manager present and yet no one seemed concerned. I sent a message to owner and left a voicemail on their phone with these details and more and no one has gotten back to me. Like I said, the food tastes great, but this simply isn't a real restaurant. I wanted to like this charming little place more than I did, but wasn't as excited leaving as when I walked out the door. Sat @ the bar - only one other customer also @ the bar. The bartender was far more into his side work than he was tending to his two customers. I had to flag him down for water refill, wasn't even asked if I wanted another drink. Never asked how my dinner was, nada. As nice was he was, he did NOT understand the art of a dining experience. Dinner was good, dessert great, although the Ceasar salad was way heavy on the dressing as well as the cheese. The only music was the kitchen's noise in the background, making it almost awkward as the place emptied out - or as you walked in the door. Music can DEFINE the ambiance and should not be overlooked. As the place emptied I still sat w/my dinner plate in front of me that I hadn't touched in 30 minutes waiting for some service. The clincher. I asked for a doggie bag and was handed a plastic container. Really? In any fine dining establishment this is something the server should do on your half. The prices do not reflect diner etiquette. We dined here on Friday and ended up bringing our daughter the following night. We ended up sitting at the bar rather than waiting for a table. Mark ordered the scallops w/ gruyere and I had the salmon both came with house veggies that were steamed to perfection and a baked potato. The 2nd night I ordered the rib eye with blue cheese butter, Mark had the chicken parma w/ prosciutto and a light crean sauce while our daughter had the filet mignon. Everything was exceptional.
