Absolutely gross. Not the full Tastee Diner that you would expect. This place is primarily a coffee shop and bakery. The staff was abrupt and super unfriendly. We chose to throw out our food and eat elsewhere. They refuse to fix the food that is disgusting and refuse to reimburse. Avoid unless you want a cookie and coffee. This Tastee is a neighborhood favorite for lots of reasons. They're conveniently located smack, dab, in the middle of Lakeview. They serve a pretty wide variety of breakfast options. Doughnuts, breakfast sandwiches, sliders, breakfast platters and lots of pastries. The service is quick and friendly too. My only issues are the breakfast biscuits. They are usually over done. If you stick with doughnuts, you really can't go wrong, and if you're looking for desserts, they've got some good ones too - turtles, black out cake, the ever popular jelly roll, and the cinnamon rolls that some of us remember from our McKenzie's days. They're all there. I almost forgot about their buttermilk drops. OMG! How could I forget those sweet, crunchy glazey, delicious bombs of perfection. I could eat a dozen of those things. I'd be sick as a dog, but I'd probably chance it on a rough day. Bottom line is that this is a hometown stop for all your breakfast needs, and it's great for waxing nostalgic if you miss McKenzie's. I stopped in today to the Harrison location after the Esplanade location clearly had no interest in making money. I was pleasantly surprised to find helpful and kind staff, as well as a good selection of pastries to complement the iconic Kastleburgers. I also enjoyed a lemonade blueberry smoothie as well as a strawberry banana smoothie. Certainly look forward to returning. read more

January 27, 2022. Came in for a quick little breakfast. I ordered a sausage, egg and cheese on toast breakfast. Specifically asked for extra bacon on the sandwich, knowing I would pay extra, which I knew. Left and went home to eat my sandwich and the sandwich had one single piece of bacon. I payed $2.00 for a piece of bacon. I then called and the lady and she was avoiding me and just saying there's nothing she can do. read more

I stopped off here on the way to work to pick up donuts for my workplace. I bought three dozen in an assortment of glazed, jelly, cake and chocolate covered. I should have bought another dozen. Not because there were not enough to go around, but because everyone wanted another one, and another one, etc. Everybody loved them. These are some of the best donuts I've had in a LONG TIME. They were the proper consistency, they had the right amount of glazed covering, and most of all they tasted great. I went back a few days later on my way to work to grab a couple of breakfast and a couple for a late afternoon snack, and this time, the glazed donuts were still warm. It was amazing. They have a sour cream donut there that is incredible! I know sour cream may sound crazy but it's so delicious. They run out quick on Saturday mornings so if you are looking for a particular donut I'd call and ask if they have anymore before coming in. Tastee Restaurant is as close as you're going to get to McKenzie's unless you've got a time machine. New Orleans is a unique place. If you ask someone where they went to school and they answer with anything other than their high school, they aren't a local. It's not that we don't appreciate our colleges, but those dont really tell someone anything about you. Similarly we equate childhood memories with food even when the place that served it has vanished from the landscape. Many of my favorite childhood memories involved trips to McKenzie's to but pastries, cakes or cookies. I vividly remember my dad picking up turtles for my mom or my mom taking us to get treats during the summer or days off of school. McKenzie's has been gone a really long time though along with all their recipies. According to the reviews on Yelp and their own signage, Tastee bought and uses those old recipies, but I was skeptical. Yesterday our politicians and media suggested the world was coming to an end via the weather. Since my work wouldn't let me leave like the rest of the city I was sitting around waiting for Armageddon when I got a little sentimental and remembered something from my youth. Buttermilk drops. That's right the little pillows of icing and cake donut that I loved as a kid. I figured if I'm going out from r good I may as well get a couple and see if they were the same as I remembered. I sent the rest of the day driving around city park taking bites of heaven that made me feel like a kid again. They were exactly as I remembered. Kudos to whoever sold those recipies. Despite my attempt at storytelling none of this is probably useful to you. Since I want to be helpful I'll also tell you that this is a full service bakery. Service was friendly and prompt and the ice coffee was pretty darn good. If you get some disregard the straw. It's too big for the cup. If you miss McKenzie's you need to get here ASAP. read more

This little piece of gastronomic heaven is located on the NE corner of Harrison Avenue and Marshall Foch Street, It is in a little strip center along with a dry cleaner and another watery. Plenty of parking in the prime doughnut buying time. Everyone presumes they have a great selection of fresh made pastries as it's a McKenzie's Bakery. True. They do. They also have a good selection of breakfast and lunch items including the Kastle Burger. Think White Castle. Fries? Of course; and very good, too. But the real surprise? The breakfast sandwiches. My favorite? The egg biscuit. It is a two-handed biscuit with scrambled egg. Add cheese, bacon or sausage patty if that is your leaning. It is big. Buttery yet light in texture. I have written to the Secretary of State, West Virginia, and suggested the cook we declared an honorary citizen on the basis of the biscuit. Back there we called them sheep head biscuits because the top is bumpy like a sheep after shearing. Whatever the adjective, they are good. A close second is the egg roll up. Large serving of egg and whatever you add. Meat and cheese are almost given. All this wrapped in a tasty tortilla. Finish off with a cup of good coffee. read more

This has to be the fanciest Tastee Donuts ever! The inside is like a fancy cafe not a diner...which is pretty much every other Tastee. I guess Harrison Ave rates fanciness. I buzzed in here on Epiphany to pick up an old school McKenzie's King Cake. (Yes I know not NOLA natives don't get the appeal, but if it's what you grew up with you would love it too.) I also discovered that they carry many other McKenzie's items including the raspberry jelly roll, so, of course, I had to buy that too. For those who remember the jelly roll, the difference is that it comes in the roll instead of pre-sliced so that makes it way fresher than the ones you remember. My Mom, uncle & brother2 gobbled it up. Weirdly, the king cake from the Tastee's on West Metairie was way tastier than the one here. I'm thinking I got one where the dough was overmixed which made it a little tough. I will have to go back and try again. read more

Go here for the food, which is phenomenal. The restaurant is gaudy with way over the top furniture: marble tables, heavy wood, paintings. It's a cross between coffee shop, home, and donut shop. It boils down to being a coffee shop restaurant that is run like a donut shop. Tastee shop is a donut shop that sells Tastee brand donuts (made fresh at the shop) and McKinzie's recipe cakes and treats. It's located in a yellowish-orange strip mall on Harrison. It's easy to miss because it doesn't really have a sign. There is a Tastee Donuts sign in the window but other stores in the strip mall have their signs on the exterior of the building, making the Tastee sign unnoticeable. The service is not good. You MUST order at the counter. I think the other reviewer was confused and expected waiter service. It's run like a donut shop. The employees are the problem with the restaurant. They are pretty weird and unprofessional--like donut shop employees. Usually they are smoking outside or watching television in the customer area. When a customer arrives they complain and shuffle back behind the counter. It just makes the place look tacky and uncomfortable. They really need new personnel to interact with the customers because the nice atmosphere of the restaurant is ruined by the current employees. Worse, they invite the pizza delivery guys and other service personnel over from nearby restaurants and all sit in front smoking away. Customers never stay inside, as a result. A television mounted above the door is the only noise inside. It's distressing that the employees sit in the tables and watch as though they own the place. This is just a sign of mismanagement and could be easily fixed. The shop is setup to promote studying and group parties. There are A LOT of tables, wifi, electrical outlets, etc. I wish they could get their act together because the facility and the food are both pretty good, even if the decor is a bit on the tacky side. Overall, the food is amazing! It's clean, it's nice, and yes...it's tastee! I recommend stopping in for donuts but not staying until they can get better personnel. If you are nostalgic for McKinzie's then this is also your best bet. If they don't have something that you want, you can special request it. They own ALL of McKinzie's recipes. read more

I'm so damned biased on this review; I won't lie. As a New Orleans native, this bakery has preserved a big part of my childhood. It almost brings me to tears when I think about the day the McKenzie's chain of bakeries closed, due to political gobbledegoop with the city. Products: It would take entirely too long to go over everything available here, but for old-timers like myself, you probably know most of the menu by heart. The crown jewel for me here is the buttermilk drop---that wonderful glazed lump of deep fried yellow cake batter, colored a golden brown. They get the flavor spot-on here. The only thing weird for me is that this place makes them uniform, with I assume a batter dispensing machine, instead of by hand as was done in the original bakeries. A rather small deviation that is hardly worth noting except as nostalgia. Of course, there are standards like "shoe soles", top-grade eclairs, petit-fors, turtles, and, yes "traditional" king cakes, as well as the filled ones which were originally made famous by this establishment's namesake. I should note there are non-confectionary foods and drinks like coffee available here as well. There has yet to be something I've purchased from this establishment I don't absolutely relish. (5 stars) Service: Counterside, with a smile! A friendly group of employees that does their job proficiently. I really don't have much to add here. (4 stars) Facilities: A storefront in a strip mall near City Park on a revitalized section of Harrison Avenue. Signage is ample; you should have no issue finding the establishment. The place is clean, and they have a small seating area with a TV playing. Bathrooms are clean. Parking is in a private lot shared with the other businesses in the strip mall. (4 stars) Overall: Even a non-native can appreciate this place. I strongly encourage you to go out of your way if you have the time and please try a perfect example of what a buttermilk drop should be. Pass on the Starbucks nearby and get you some good New Orleans baked goods and a coffee and chicory here! You'll be thanking me later. (5 stars) read more

I hate to give a bad review but the food is mediocre at best and the service is probably the worst in the Harrison area. I absolutely love the Harrison shops and stores and this place does not fit the mold at all. The lady at the register is extremely rude and acts like she does not want to be there at all. I ordered a large ice coffee and she gave me a medium. No big deal at all except she acted like she didn't make a mistake, reluctantly took it back, and slammed the new one on the counter. She had missed several items in our order and made it appear like it was inconveniencing her to bring us our missing items. She summoned us to the counter to get them while we were eating. What bothered me the most though was while we sat and ate our food, we saw a man who appeared to not have very much come in and order a meal. It looked like he had been saving up for a hot meal and was looking forward to it. He ordered the special that day which was supposed to come with a donut. After he received his order, he looked in his bag to see if he had the donut and it wasn't in there. He politely asked the lady up front for his donut and she rolled his eyes at him and placed it on the counter without acknowledging him. Consistently terrible customer service. I came in today to order breakfast (served all day) at 12:45 pm. The woman responded with "It's kind of late for breakfast, isn't it?" And then proceeded to complain to the cook about how they were trying to shut things down and I was ordering breakfast items. I asked "Don't you serve breakfast all day?" even though it's stated on the top of the menu, to which she replied "Oh we'll MAKE it, we're just trying to shut things down." Now, I've been here many times. The customer service is pretty bad about 95% of the time, as they always look very annoyed about having to take orders. I've always put up with it, not because the food is anything special (it's not), but because it's the closest breakfast spot to home. This time was just too much. I replied to her "So you'll make it, but you'll complain about it to the customer? If y'all don't want to serve breakfast all day you shouldn't offer it?" To which she said I was "Being a fool" and that she was trying to "Be nice" by making my order. I asked for my money back and left. Stopped by before work to get a king cake. Saw that they sell McKenzie's. McKenzie's went out of business a while back but it seems this place bought their recipe? Either way, the king cake was trash. I was told over the phone that they'd had cakes baked earlier in the morning but the one I had was dry beyond reasoning. I walked in, asked for a cake, and was answered with a question; "there's one on the counter isn't there?" Ok, whatever, early morning coffee and donut man, maybe you're not a morning person, whatever. Im willing to put up with less than decent customer service when the product is good, but it wasn't. Hence the one star. 0/10 would not recommend a king cake from here. Save your 19 bucks, even Walmart would make your krewe happier than this place's inferior product would. From the rude service, staff's inability to perform basic addition, liquid carton egg breakfast products, microwaved and reheated burgers to the god awful decorations in the this place they just need to be closed and evicted. We dont usually give bad reviews but sometimes you have no choice. We tried this place twice and twice disappointed. The filled donuts have about a nickle size amount of filling in a huge donut, except for this morning when they forgot to add any filling to four donuts. Cheryl was abnoxisly rude. Rude to the point, that she displayed bitterness, as if she was upset that she had to work on a Sunday morning. She was mad and condescending to me because I was talking about California Donuts with the cashier, his service was great. I told the guy that California Donuts had some unique donuts, we were not comparing their products, but Cheryl was upset she went off fuming saying, "who cares about what they have in California and we don't need that here. What was even crazier, was that she said, Greece has nice things too, but we don't need their things here either. Isn't that the most bizarre thing? Do you know how it feels to gey hone and bite into you jelly filled glazed donut, inly to discover there is no jelly!!! I used to drive to New Orleans three times a week for soccer practice in high school. We practiced at UNO and the one thing I looked forward to were the Buttermilk drops from McKenzie's on Elysian Fields. The drops are not a pretty thing to look at but oh were they so good. Ok, on to the review of Tastee in Lakeview. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Tastee bought all the recipes from McKenzie's and so now they make the Buttermilk Drops. They are decent, but not what I remember. Tastee's are pretty and nicely shaped, but their flavor is good. I got a coffee, but I would probably go here more often if the coffee was better. This is not your average Tastee Donut. It is much more like a bistro inside. That being said, the service on the day I went was pretty reminiscent of the Tastee franchise. We did go the day before Mardi Gras, so I understand they were busy, but not nearly as busy as their very long line would imply. They were INCREDIBLY slow cashing people out, and, even though they had a staff member going down the line to try to preemptively fill orders, she couldn't make any of their more sophisticated coffee drinks or do much except grab you a donut. Being the compulsive planner I am, I ordered my king cakes several days before I picked them up. The first time I called, I was put 'on hold' which consisted of the phone being laid down where I could still hear everything going on. I was just enjoying my morning coffee at home, so I gave them 10 minutes of having me on hold before hanging up. Of course when I tried to call back, the phone was still off the hook, so I got the eternal busy signal. Well played Tastee. Later in the day, I decided to try again to reserve my little bit of Mardi Gras bliss. This time my order was taken right away, but not without its own issues. The person on the phone literally had to refer every one of my questions to some 3rd party not included in our conversation. I don't feel it's too much to ask to have employees know the cost of their king cakes or approximately how many people it would feed. Yesterday for Mardi Gras was my first time st this restaurant and the cashier was so unfriendly there's an older guy behind the counter just straight rude. This is a terrible look for New Orleans. When working with customers at least a smile will show some hospitality i do not recommend this restaurant being a business owner with over 10k people followings on social media I will make sure they know how this place is. Always have issues getting served properly and timely at this location. I have been left to wait, recieved over one dozen donuts thrown in a bag, over looked in line...pitiful! I don't know why I continued to go back but today was the last straw. I have met several other folks from my neighborhood (Gentilly) that have had this experience with this location and are not aware of ways to air their grievances online. I've been craving buttermilk drops since I moved here. I was told McKenzie's (Tastee) is the only place I should try - "the best" my friend said. Before I get to the dryness of the drop, let's address the service. The older woman in the front, at the counter, was extremely rude! I, as the customer, had to speak first. I ordered ice coffee, but she clearly is not aware of how to offer it or serve it. Granulated, white sugar was my only sweetening option & NO cream. I used my usual amount of half & half and it was still black. I love strong coffee, not black mud that's bitter. But the service! Terrible. I rarely request refunds. I had to ask. Your coffee is higher than Starbucks, but disgusting??? She started loud-talking me, so I had to ask her to calm down. Then, she slammed my money on the counter. Nasty Nasty NASTY.
